2 College Courses The range of college courses available to you has changed dramatically for the session ahead. Looking through this booklet, you ll find a wide selection of courses offered at different levels. From Foundation Apprenticeships to Photography, there is a much wider range of courses on offer. Courses at college are not always awarded at National 3,4,5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels you might see SCQF levels mentioned these can be equated to the National courses as follows to give a rough indication of challenge: SCQF Level 3 courses are equivalent to SCQF Level 4 courses are equivalent to SCQF Level 5 courses are equivalent to SCQF Level 6 courses are equivalent to SCQF Level 7 courses are equivalent to National 3 level National 4 level National 5 level Higher level Advanced Higher level Our school Senior Phase Subject Information Booklet (all 90 Pages!) is available on the school website, and it highlights all of the school based courses on offer. Using both that booklet, and this one, you should be considering what course options you would like to follow in your Senior Phase at Dumbarton Academy. Not only have the range of college courses changed but the college days have also changed. Dumbarton and Vale of Leven schools will no longer attend college on the Friday mornings. Along with all secondary schools in West Dunbartonshire college is now provided on either Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (1: pm ) or Wednesday and Friday afternoons ( pm). Our consortia subjects will run in the afternoon periods on the same days. Bus transport will be provided. If you select a college course you will be making a big commitment, but this comes with potentially very big rewards. College Courses Page 1
3 Begin Make Up Artistry (NPA Cosmetology Framework) SCQF Level 4 NPA in cosmetology consists of 4 credits. Students will work on units such as Make-up artistry, practical skills, product awareness, career options and choices, health and safety, prepare and assist in the workplace environment as well as working with customers and colleagues. This course gives pupils an opportunity to apply to NC Make-up full time courses in the future. A degree of written work is part of all units within this course. 4 Introduction to Hair and Beauty SCQF Level 4 A cluster of SQA units, designed to give a relevant and meaningful experience of both subject areas, and providing the opportunity to making an informed choice for further senior phase study. A degree of written work is part of all units within this course. There are no Formal entry requirements Opportunity to progress to another schools programme. 5 Higher Beauty SCQF Level 6 Interested in Skin Care, Make UP and Nail Care. During this course you will gain knowledge, learn the theory; develop the practical skills, communication skills, customer care and salon skills to gain your Higher Beauty qualification. You will investigate and learn about current trends and styles, with the opportunity to experience and produce work that reflects these trends. Learning through a variety of activities; enhancing awareness of salon conditions and developing salon skills. S5-6 Entry is at the discretion of the centre, you must have a keen interest in beauty and be prepared to observe skills being demonstrated and then to practice for as long as it takes to become confident. 6 Childcare Skills for Work (4 Units) SCQF Level 4 You will study units from the Skills for Work programme - Childcare at National 4 Level. This will introduce you to the knowledge and experience required to work in a variety of childcare environments. You will learn ways of providing appropriate play and activities for children and young people whilst maintaining their health, safety and well-being in every situation. This course will allow you to develop an understanding of child development, explore how to cater for children s individual needs and examine the roles and responsibilities required of childcare practitioners. Students should be working at National 4 Level This course is a group award consisting of four units at National 4 level. It covers a broad range of issues in the following units: Child Development Working in Early Education and Childcare Play in Early Education and Childcare Care of Children Please note no placements are offered on this course and all demonstrations and interactions are simulated to create a realistic environment. Visits to Local Nurseries are part of your course If you complete this course successfully and would like to undertake further study, you can apply for: National 5 Childcare (Skills for Work) There will be a one to one interview for entry to this course. 7 Childcare Skills for Work (4 Units) SCQF level 5 You will study a national 5 level programme that will allow you to further develop your knowledge and understanding of child development and children s health, how to care for and feed children, the importance of play in children s development. You will also be given an opportunity to visit a nursery setting in order to gain some practical experience of working with children. This will be a supervised session/s therefore negating the need for a PVG check Students should have achieved credit at level 4 and be working on level some 5 subjects and above at the same time as studying this course. This course is a group award consisting of four units at National 5 level. It covers a broad range of issues in the following units: F19L11 - Child Development and Health DM Working in Early Education and Childcare DM Parenting DM Play in Early Education and Childcare Please note that no placements are offered on this course. This course can prepare you for work in the areas of employment that deal with care in the environment e.g. If you complete this course successfully and would like to undertake further study, you can apply for: NC Early Education and Childcare NC Child Health and Social Care. NC Social Care You will be interviewed for this course and this will involve: A welcome and introduction from Head of Sector A written exercise short paragraph answers to three questions A personal interview Your written response and personal presentation will be graded to establish your suitability for the course. 8 Early Education & Childcare Programme HNC selected units SCQF Level 7 Theoretical approaches to development and learning and or The Unit is designed to enable candidates to research and gain theoretical understanding of the development and learning of children. This Unit highlights the role of play in children s development and learning. This theoretical knowledge will be linked to practice. Supporting children and Young People s Rights and Entitlements The Unit is designed to enable candidates to understand relevant legislation designed to ensure children and young people s rights in Scotland. It will provide candidates with an understanding of how legislation influences practice in an early years and childcare setting and encourage them to reflect on their role in ensuring the promotion of children and young people s rights Must be able to work at level 6 and undertaking a Highers programme Theoretical approaches to development and learning Theoretical perspectives for play, development and learning. 9 COMPUTING COMPUTER SUPPORT HNC SCQF Level 7 The HNC Computing award is designed to offer candidates academic and technician training leading to the skills necessary to design, implement and support IT systems in a vast range of industries. The candidates will develop a range of contemporary vocational skills (eg technical computing skills) relating to the use and support of IT systems. 10 COMPUTING Strata IT Fundamentals SCQF Level 5 The official CompTIA description of Strata is an entry-level certificate that ensures knowledge of PC components, functionality, compatibility, and related technology topics. To summarise, Strata covers computer hardware, compatibility issues and common errors, software installation and functions, system settings, security risks, Multimedia, the Internet Strata is aimed at students who are considering a career in IT Working at Nat 5 Level Personal computer basics Managing computer contents. 11 COMPUTING CISCO CCNA Routing and Switching SCQF Level 7 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professionals are in short supply. (See Related Resources below for industry reports). Networking is predicted to be the second fastest growing occupation, faster than the average for all occupations, and will continue to grow as investments are made in newer, faster technology, and mobile networks. The Cisco CCNA curriculum helps students prepare for ICT careers and are aligned with the globally recognized Cisco CCENT and CCNA certifications, further validating skills to potential employers. S5-6 Students applying for this course should be working at NAT 5 level and above The CCNA Routing and Switching curriculum consists of four x 80 hr courses: 2 out of 4 of these units will be studied with the CCENT Exam Introduction to Networks (ITN) is the first course in the Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching curriculum teaching students the architecture, structure, functions and components of the Internet and other computer networks. By the end of the course, students will be able to build simple LANs, perform basic configurations for routers and switches, and implement IP addressing schemes. Routing and Switching Essentials is the second course in the CCNA Routing and Switching curriculum teaching students how to configure a router and a switch for basic functionality. By the end of this course, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with RIPv1, RIPng, single-area and multi-area OSPF, virtual LANs, and inter-vlan routing. Scaling Networks is the third course in the CCNA Routing and Switching curriculum teaching students how to configure routers and switches for advanced functionality. By the end of this course, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with OSPF, EIGRP, and STP. Connecting Networks is the fourth and final course in the CCNA Routing and Switching curriculum covering the WAN technologies and network services employed by converged applications in a complex network. By the end of this course, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot network devices and resolve common issues with data link protocols. Students progress from Course 1 to course 4 at the end of course 2 students can take The CCENT certification exam and at the end of course 4, students can complete the CCNA exam. 12 Construction Skills for Work NAT 5 SCQF Level 5 Jobs in the construction industry are ever in demand. If you are interested this is an ideal starting point for you to explore each of the main trade areas. This is a very practical course; on it students will work in a variety of workshops producing products and models that are accepted as being completed to industry standards. 13 NPA Professional Cookery and Bakery SCQF Level 4 If you are interested in pursuing a career in the catering industry, but do not necessarily have any prior experience of cookery, then try this introductory course. You will learn skills in professional cookery, whilst working in the training kitchens within the Hospitality department. You will be preparing and presenting food in a realistic working environment throughout the academic year. You should ideally have Core Skills at SCQF Level 3 but is at the discretion of the College Food Preparation Techniques: An Introduction Food Hygiene for the Hospitality Industry Cookery Processes: An Introduction Craft Baking: An Introduction Cake Decorating: An Introduction Bread Making: An Introduction (NC) in Professional Cookery at SCCF level 5 or to seek employment in the hospitality and catering industry, eg as trainee commis chef/apprentice. 14 NC Professional Cookery SCQF Level 5 This qualification provides an introduction to Professional Cookery; giving students an opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to secure employment in the catering industry You will learn how to prepare, cook, hold and present a range of sweet and savoury dishes in both our fully equipped training kitchens and our training restaurant. 15 ECONOMICS : Higher SCQF Level 6 This course looks at the role of government, business and global trade. It explores the economic environments in which they are set. National 5 economics course or relevant component units or National 5 Business Management Course This course offers a blend of theoretical and practical experiences. 16 Performing Engineering Operations SCQF Level 4 This qualification covers the fundamental skills and knowledge common to all engineering and manufacturing practises including health and safety requirements and communicating engineering information. The qualification is comprised of 3 Mandatory units and 2 Optional Units (from a large selection of 32.) The 2 practical units are there to substantially improve the practical skills of the student, by manufacturing a number of different items from a series of engineering drawing to within a given tolerance. 17 Engineering Systems HNC Level 7 This course qualifies the student for a Higher National Certificate in Engineering Systems at SCQF Level 7. The course has been developed to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills to seek employment at technician and junior management level. Past students who qualified with an HNC level qualification have gained employment within technically challenging areas within the oil and gas, transport, marine engineering and renewable industries. Curriculum units (minimum of 12 credits required) National 5 minimum Grade B, in Math s and Physics or Tech Studies. 18 Motor Vehicle Engineering -City & Guild Award/Certificate SCQF Level 4 Students will gain the knowledge, experience and the skills required to gain employment in the industry. You will learn in industry standard workshops and develop practical skills working with tools, equipment and cars used in motor vehicle engineering. This is a very demanding course with both practical and theory activities. You will develop essential employability skills good timekeeping, regular attendance and compliance with health and safety. You must wear boots and overalls in the workshop at all times. The qualification aims to: To provide learners with a basic understanding of housing and community action. To recognise some of the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in housing and community activities. To prepare learners for further study and / or employment. The qualification is aimed at people: Tenants and residents wishing to explore housing to enhance their personal involvement and understanding of the housing sector. Tenants and residents who are active in the community and wish to see their contribution recognised through a nationally accredited qualification. People who wish to gain an initial qualification in a housing related subject area. 23 Photography Higher SCQF Level 6 Working towards a Higher in Photography will require you to take time in your week to plan, take and edit your pictures. Some projects are weather dependent meaning you will have to take pictures when possible; that might mean early on a Sunday morning! Some students who complete this course go on to join our very successful courses in photography here in the College. Other students use the Higher to boost their art qualifications for entry to university, college or art school. The course assumes you have little or no experience of photography when you start. This is a creative subject that also has a technical element. It will give you an opportunity to practice a wider range of skills and it looks great on your UCAS or job application form! S5/6 Image Making Learn to use a DSLR camera and edit your images Contextual imagery Look at the world of photography, design and plan your photo shoots Photographic Project Compile a final project folio of your images On successful completion, you may apply for NQ / HNC Photography, university or art school. This qualification carries the same value as every other SQA Higher and will aid your entry to further or higher education. 24 Psychology Higher SCQF Level 6 This course provides an opportunity for you to enhance your knowledge and understanding of Human Psychology. This is achieved by studying a variety of topics that will help you to understand and explain the human mind and behaviour. There are three topics, topic 1 Individual Behaviour, examines aspects which make us unique such as our memory, how we respond to stress and the various influences on our sleeping patterns. Topic 2 Research, explains and examines the various research skills employed by psychologists when investigating human behaviour. This unit concludes with a personal research project which will involve students selecting a suitable topic for research and devising and conducting that research in collaboration with other class members. The unit concludes with the submission of and individual report that is externally marked and accounts for 40% of the final mark. The last topic Social Behaviour, looks at the various social influences that have an influence on our behaviour, such as the degree to which we conform or our prejudice towards other groups in society. The course concludes with a final exam. Higher Psychology is an intensive course and will require you to be Self-motivated, enthusiastic and prepared to study out with college classes. You should be in S6 at school and have obtained an SQA Higher in English. However pupils in S5 will be considered at the request of the school. Individual Behaviour Social Behaviour Research You will also be asked to complete a Research Investigation as part of the Investigating Behaviour unit. Along with your investigation, you will be asked to keep a logbook to record progress. Your research investigation and logbook will be externally marked and are worth 40% of the final mark. The remaining 60% of the final mark comes from the end of course external exam, which tests your knowledge and understanding of all three units. A Higher in Psychology can lead to progression on a number of courses. This course provides an excellent foundation should you wish to study Psychology at university or Management, Education, Criminology. Indeed, many courses and subjects at university contain an element of Psychology and it is therefore a versatile choice for general progression to higher education. Psychology is considered both an arts and a science subject, so it can be very useful for entry to a wide range of courses at university. You may also wish to continue your study of the subject as part of a general HNC in Social Sciences or Counselling. There will be a one to one interview for entry to this course. 25 SCIENCE Human Body Structure and Function Level 8 Human Body Structure and Function is a double credit unit at SCQF Level 8. As such it entails approx. 80 hours of teaching and 80 hours of study by learners and equates to Year 2 of university biology degree programmes. The unit offers learners with experience of biology (Higher grade or Advanced Higher) the opportunity to extend this knowledge and develop an understanding of select body systems & how the human body co-ordinates these systems to maintain homeostasis. In studying these systems learners also discover what happens when things go wrong, covering conditions as diverse as hyperthyroidism, gigantism and coronary heart disease. The unit would be an ideal stepping stone between secondary education and university programmes in medicine and dentistry, as well as to biology-based degree routes. Data handling, problem solving and experimental techniques are all developed alongside expanding knowledge on anatomy and physiology. 26 SCIENCE Microbiology SCQF Level 5 The course will look at groups of microbes, the problems they cause and beneficial effects of microbes.it also covers the practical techniques needed to work with microbes in a laboratory. Pupils are assessed in written tests and also in practical skills with the possibility of gaining a British Science Association CREST Award based on practical work. Pupils should have National 5 biology or above 2 SQA units in Microbiology and Microbiology Techniques In combination with relevant school qualifications pupils could gain access to college programme at SCQF Level 6 or HNC (level 7) There will be a one to one interview for entry to this course. 27 SCIENCE Microbiology SCQF Level 7 This course is suitable for pupils who have Higher Biology/Higher Human Biology or working towards Advanced Higher Biology. At an introductory level the course will look at groups of microbes, progressing to how they grow and reproduce, where they occur in nature and the impact they have on humans, including the diseases they cause. A significant amount of laboratory skills are developed throughout the programme and pupils will be able to undertake the SSERC Safety in Microbiology (level3) qualification accredited by SQA. This will support Advanced Higher Biology but also provides a skills set which will be used at university and in employment. Assessment will be by written tests but also by demonstration of competence in practical skills. 28 SCIENCE Advanced Higher Practical in Biology SCQF Level 7 Joint Delivery Model Theory at school and practical s at WCS Pupils will undertake all practical aspects (except project) at college for both Unit 1 and Unit 2 of Advanced Higher Biology Pupils must be working towards Advance Higher Biology within School Unit 1 Laboratory Techniques for Biologists covers Health & Safety. Microbiology Techniques & use of instrumentation such as PCR machines, centro fuses and electrophoresis equipment. Unit 2 Field techniques for Biologists covers sampling techniques such as transects and capture techniques to monitor populations in a variety of environments. Each Foundation Apprenticeship has been designed in partnership with industry to make sure that you get the skills and knowledge you need. In the classroom you ll cover the theory behind each role then you ll get the opportunity to put it into practice in the workplace. The Foundation Apprenticeships takes two years to complete and is one of your subject choices. The hands-on experience will lead to an industry-recognised qualification, set at SCQF Level 6 (the same level of learning as a Higher) and based on existing industry-recognised qualifications including Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) and National Certificates. A Foundation Apprenticeship can unlock a range of career options. Whether you re planning to go on to college or university, enrol on a Modern Apprenticeship or go straight into work, it will give you the skills and work experience to get a head start in your career. 30 Access to Higher National Certificate in Sport SCQF Level 6 This course is designed to prepare candidates for jobs within the Sport and Fitness industry, for example, Leisure Centre Attendant, Sports Club Attendant, Fitness/Gym Attendant, or a Sports Development Assistant. The course aims to give motivated students the required skills to progress onto HNC/D study by forming an ideal link between Access to HN and HNC. This course is designed for students who have 3 passes at National 4 including English or 3 Standard Grade/Intermediate 1 passes including English or successfully completed an NC Sport and Fitness: Level 4 (SCQF Level 4). Applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications but who have relevant life and/or work Experience. All entry is subject to discussion at interview. The course will contain units at Higher level directed towards increasing study and research skills but at the same time always with a sporting emphasis. Through the units completed there will be an opportunity to gain Communication Higher equivalent which will be invaluable when moving onto Higher National study within the area of sport. Core units include Exercise and Fitness Free Weight Training; Leadership and Practice; Work Placement; Human Physiology; Event Organisation; Multi- Skills for Sport; and Communications. Multiple exit routes are available to candidates depending upon their aspirations and preferences. The range of Sport and Fitness skills and understanding provided to candidates within the Course programme will be major contributory factors to the successful progression of candidates. Employment Opportunities: career opportunities may include, but are not confined to the following: Sports Coaches and Leaders, Development staff, Fitness/Gym staff, Leisure Centre staff, Swimming Pool staff and Health and Fitness staff. Employers may include the following: Local authority, Scottish and National Governing Bodies, Local Sports Organisations, Private Clubs/Hotels and Leisure Trusts. 31 Sport & Recreation Skills for Work SCQF Level 4 & 5 The Skills for Work (SfW) Course in Sports and Recreation covers the main practical activities involved in carrying out a support role in a sports and recreation environment, as well as health and safety legislation. Set at SCQF levels 4 and 5, the Course gives hands-on experience in an appropriate recreational setting. You must have a keen interest in learning about hairdressing and be prepared to observe skills being demonstrated and then to practice for as long as it takes to become competent.
