5 1 Introduction The PRIMERGY Econel 100 server is an Intel-based server for small and midsize networks. The server is suitable for use as a file server and also as an application, information or Internet server. 1.1 Overview of the documentation Concept and target group of this manual This Service Supplement completes the information given in the Operating Manual, the Options Guide and the Technical Manual of the system board. 9 2 Procedure V CAUTION! The actions described in this manual should only be performed by service personnel. Before doing anything else, please take notice of chapter Safety notes on page 11 and following. Make sure all necessary manuals (see service DVD) are available; you may find it advantageous to print the PDF files. You will definitely need the Operating Manual and the Options Guide for the server and the Technical Manual for the system board. Shut down the server correctly, switch it OFF, pull out the power plug, and open the server as described in the chapter Replacement routines on page 17 and following. Replace the defective component as described in the relevant chapter. 11 3 Safety notes I The following safety notes are also provided in the Safety manual. This device complies with the relevant safety regulations for data processing equipment. V CAUTION! The actions described in this manual should only be performed by service personnel. Before operating the device V CAUTION! During installation and before operating the device, observe the instructions on environmental conditions for your device. If the device is brought in from a cold environment, condensation may form both inside and on the outside of the machine. Wait until the device has acclimatized to room temperature and is absolutely dry before starting it up. Material damage may be caused to the device if this requirement is not observed. Transport the device in its original packaging or in other suitable packaging which will protect it against shock or impact. Installation and operation V CAUTION! If the server is integrated in an installation that receives power from an industrial (public) power supply network with the IEC309 connector, the (public) power supply protection must comply with the requirements for the non-industrial (public) power supply networks for the type A connector. The server automatically sets itself to a voltage in the range of 100 V to 240 V. Make sure that your local voltage is within this range. Econel 100 Service Supplement 11

12 Safety V CAUTION! This device has a specially approved power cable and must only be connected to a grounded insulated socket. Ensure that the power socket on the device or the grounded wall outlet is freely accessible. The power switch or the main power switch does not disconnect the device from the mains voltage. To disconnect the line voltage completely, remove the power plug from the grounded insulated socket. Always connect the device and the attached peripherals to the same power circuit. Otherwise you run the risk of losing data if, for example, the central processing unit is still running but the peripheral device (e.g. storage subsystem) has failed during a power outage. Data cables must be adequately shielded. To the LAN wiring the requirements apply in accordance with the standards EN and EN /2. As minimum requirement the use of a protected LAN line of category 5 for 10/100 MBps Ethernet, and/or of category 5e for Gigabit Ethernet is considered. The requirements of the specification ISO/IEC are to be considered. Route the cables in such a way that they do not form a potential hazard (make sure no-one can trip over them) and that they cannot be damaged. When connecting up a device, refer to the relevant notes in this manual. Never connect or disconnect data transmission lines during a storm (lightning hazard). Otherwise you run the risk of losing data if, for example, the central processing unit is still running but the peripheral device (e.g. storage subsystem) has failed during a power outage. In emergencies (e.g. damaged casing, controls or cables, penetration of liquids or foreign matter), switch OFF the device immediately, remove the power plug and contact your sales outlet or customer service team. 12 Service Supplement Econel 100

13 Safety V CAUTION! Proper operation of the system (in accordance with IEC 60950/ EN 60950) is only ensured if the casing is completely assembled and the rear covers for the installation openings have been put in place (electric shock, cooling, fire protection, interference suppression). Only install system expansions that satisfy the requirements and rules governing safety and electromagnetic compatibility and relating to telecommunications terminal equipment. If you install other expansions, you may damage the system or violate the safety regulations and regulations governing RFI suppression. Information on which system expansions are suitable can be obtained from the customer service centre or your sales outlet. The components or parts marked with a warning label (e.g. lightning symbol) may only be opened, removed or exchanged by authorized, qualified personnel. The warranty expires if the device is damaged during the installation or replacement of system expansions. You may only set those resolutions and refresh rates specified in the Technical data section of the monitor description. Otherwise, you may damage your monitor. If you are in any doubt, contact your sales outlet or customer service centre. Batteries V CAUTION! Incorrect replacement of batteries may lead to a risk of explosion. The batteries may only be replaced with identical batteries or with a type recommended by the manufacturer (see the technical manual for the system board). Do not throw batteries into the trash can. They must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations concerning special waste. The battery must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations concerning special waste. Replace the lithium battery on the system board in accordance with the instructions in the technical manual for the system board. Econel 100 Service Supplement 13

14 Safety All batteries containing pollutants are marked with a symbol (a crossed-out garbage can). In addition, the marking is provided with the chemical symbol of the heavy metal decisive for the classification as a pollutant: Cd Cadmium Hg Mercury Pb Lead Notes on handling CDs/DVDs and CD/DVD drives V CAUTION! Use only CDs/DVDs in proper condition in the CD/DVD drive of your server to prevent data loss, damage to the device and injuries. Therefore, check each CD/DVD for damage, cracks, breakage etc. before inserting it in the drive. Please note that any additional labels applied may change the mechanical properties of a CD/DVD and cause imbalance. Damaged and imbalanced CDs/DVDs can break at high drive speeds (data loss). Under certain conditions sharp-edged pieces of broken CDs/DVDs can penetrate the cover of the drive (damage to the device) and be thrown out of the device (danger of injury, particularly on uncovered body parts such as the face or neck). I You protect the CD/DVD drive and prevent mechanical damage, as well as premature wearing of the CDs/DVDs, by observing the following suggestions: Only insert the CDs/DVDs in the drive when needed and remove them after use. Store the CDs/DVDs in suitable sleeves. Protect the CDs/DVDs from exposure to heat and direct sunlight. 14 Service Supplement Econel 100

15 Safety Note about the laser The CD/DVD drive is classified for laser class 1 according to IEC V CAUTION! The CD/DVD drive contains a laser diode (LED). Sometimes the LED produces a stronger laser beam than laser class 1. Direct view into the laser beam is dangerous. Never remove parts of the CD/DVD drive assembly! Modules with electrostatic-sensitive components: Systems and components that might be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD) are marked with the following label: Figure 1: ESD label When you handle components fitted with ESDs, you must observe the following points under all circumstances: Remove the power plug from the power socket before inserting or removing components containing ESDs. You must always discharge yourself of static charges (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working. The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges. Use a grounding cable designed for this purpose to connect yourself to the system unit as you install components. Only touch the components at the positions highlighted in green (touch point). Do not touch any exposed pins or conductors on a component. Econel 100 Service Supplement 15

17 4 Replacement routines V CAUTION! Refer to the safety notes in chapter Safety notes on page 11 and following. 4.1 Preparation I You will find a detailed description for Opening the server, for Removing the front panel and for Folding out the power supply unit in the Options Guide Econel Opening the server Terminate all applications and shut down the server correctly. Switch off the power supply unit (press the main power switch), and remove the power plug from the grounded insulated socket. If required, remove the lock on the side cover. Keep the green locking button on the rear of the server pressed, and slide the left side cover upward. Remove the side cover Removing the front panel Remove the front panel when making the following replacement routines: Replacing the operating panel cable Replacing the USB front cable Remove the left side cover as described in section Opening the server. Detach the two unlocking levers on the side, and fold out the front panel. Remove the front panel carefully. Econel 100 Service Supplement 17

Disconnect all power supply cables from the system board and from the drives (see the cabling in the Options Guide Econel 100). Loosen the knurled screw and swing the power supply unit out from the housing. 4.2 Replacing the operating panel cable Open the server and remove the front panel as described in section Preparation on page Figure 2: Loosen the operating panel cable Unlock the power button and push it in the direction of the arrow out from its holder. Repeat the steps for the two LEDs. 18 Service Supplement Econel 100

Proceed in the reverse order to install the new operating panel cable. I You will find it much easier to insert the operating panel cable if the drive bellow it is temporarily removed (for description see the Options Guide). Close the server (for a detailed description see the Options Guide) and reconnect the power plug. Econel 100 Service Supplement 19

20 Replacing the USB front cable Replacement routines 4.3 Replacing the USB front cable Open the server and remove the front panel as described in section Preparation on page 17. Disconnect the power supply cable (connector P2) from the floppy disk drive. Disconnect the data cable T26139-Y1248-V8 from the floppy disk drive. Detach the USB front cable T26139-Y3894-V2 from the connector USB Front on the system board (see the D2179 sticker). Remove the slide-in unit with the floppy disk drive from the location by pressing together the two springs of the EasyClick rails until they are unlocked (for a detailed description see the Options Guide). Figure 6: Mounting the USB front cable Thread the new cable through the opening until the connector mounting plate is firmly fixed (1) and fasten the mounting plate to the slide-in unit (2). Insert the slide-in unit into the housing. Reconnect the cables. Close the server (for a detailed description see the Options Guide) and reconnect the power plug. 4.4 Replacing the system fan Open the server as described in section Opening the server on page 17. Disconnect the system fan cable from the connector FAN2 on the system board (see the D2179 sticker). Detach the unlocking lever and remove the system fan (for a detailed description see the Options Guide). Place the new system fan onto the support rail on the server s bottom and press it in the direction of the arrow until it clicks audibly into place. Connect the system fan cable to the connector FAN2 on the system board. Close the server (for a detailed description see the Options Guide) and reconnect the power plug. 22 Service Supplement Econel 100

Make sure that the power supply unit fits in the nose (1) and right side angle (2). Secure the power supply unit at the rear of the server with the four screws (see also figure 9 on page 24). Swing the power supply unit back into the housing and fasten it with the knurled screw. Connect all power supply cables to the system board and to the drives (see the cabling in the Options Guide). Mount the air duct grid in the reverse order to removal. Ensure that the locking handle engages. Close the server (for a detailed description see the Options Guide) and reconnect the power plug. 4.6 Replacing the intrusion detection switch The intrusion detection switch monitors the removing of the left side cover of the housing. The intrusion detection switch is located on the left upper cross-beam next the cage for accessible drives. Open the server as described in section Opening the server on page 17. 26 Replacing the intrusion detection switch Replacement routines Disconnect the intrusion detection cable from the connector INTR on the system board (see the D2179 sticker). Figure 12: Removing the intrusion detection switch Take the intrusion detection switch out of the holder (circle). Remove the intrusion detection switch with the cable. V CAUTION! Make a note of the cable routing. Place the new intrusion detection switch into the holder, route the cable and connect it to the INTR connector on the system board (see the D2179 sticker). 27 Replacement routines Replacing the processor 4.7 Replacing the processor V CAUTION! Processors are modules which are extremely sensitive to electrostatic discharges and therefore must always be handled with care. After a processor has been removed from its protective sleeve or from its socket, place it with its smooth side down on a non-conducting, antistatic surface. Never push a processor over a surface. Open the server and fold out the power supply unit as described in section Preparation on page 17. Figure 13: Removing the heat sink, type of the heat sink depends on processor Loosen the four screws in a crossover pattern. Loosen the heat sink by turning it back and forth and then lift it out. Remove the residual thermal paste from the underside of the heat sink. Clean the underside of the heat sink using a lint-free cloth. Econel 100 Service Supplement 27

Lift the installed processor carefully out of the socket (2). 1 a Figure 15: Inserting a new processor Remove the protective cap from the bottom side of the new processor. Position the new processor over the socket and then carefully press it into the socket (1). V CAUTION! The processor can only be installed in one particular direction. Note the marking on one of the corners. To avoid damaging the pins or the processor, do not force it into the socket. 28 Service Supplement Econel 100

Do not close with force, because soldering pads may be damaged. Press the lever slowly downward (2) until it is hooked in again (3). Apply a small amount of thermal paste to the upper side of the new processor. Ensure a thin and even distribution of the thermal paste. Position the heat sink carefully on the processor. Turn screw no.1 two/three turns, then will be no tension on the processor when tightening the next screws. 2. Tighten screws no. 2, 3 and 4 in this order, according to the figure Tighten screw no.1 finally. Close the server (for a detailed description see the Options Guide) and reconnect the power plug. 4.8 Replacing the system board Open the server and fold out the power supply unit as described in section Preparation on page 17. Disconnect the system fan cable from the connector FAN2 on the system board (see the D2179 sticker). Hook off the cross-beam at the right side (see circle) and take it out. Remove all cables from the connector panel. Lay the server on the right side on a table. Remove all cables which may be connected to the system board. Remove all installed controllers (for description see the Options Guide). Take note of the slots of the controllers and the cabling. 32 Replacing the system board Replacement routines Figure 19: Removing the screws Remove the 10 screws from the system board. Lift the system board slightly using the marked socket of PCI slot. In this way you lift the system board out of the centering rings of the spacer bolts. 32 Service Supplement Econel 100

33 Replacement routines Replacing the system board Carefully remove the system board (take the board with both hands) from the casing at a slight angle. This allows you to pull the connectors out of the connector panel. V CAUTION! Always take the system board with both hands! Figure 20 shows the handling by the example of a sample board. Never lift the system board one-sided or at the heat sink, because the solder connections between the socket and the board come under tension and increase the risk of damage and malfunction! Don t damage the EMI springs to comply with applicable EMC regulations and satisfy cooling requirements and fire protection measures. 34 Replacing the system board Replacement routines Place the removed system board on an antistatic surface. Unscrew the four screws of the heat sink and remove it (for description see section Replacing the processor on page 27). V CAUTION! Processors are components which are extremely sensitive to electrostatic discharges and must be handled with caution. After taking a processor out of its protective wrapper, set it on an insulated antistatic surface with the smooth side down. Never slide a processor over a surface. Open the locking lever and remove the processor (for description see section Replacing the processor on page 27) and store it safely to avoid any damage. Remove the memory modules (for description see the Options Guide). Remove the retaining plate on the lower surface of the system board in a secure way to be able to use it for the new board. Do not destroy the system board! V CAUTION! Do not use any tool between the retaining plate and the system board to separate the two parts. This would destroy the system board. 34 Service Supplement Econel 100

35 Replacement routines Replacing the system board Figure 21: Removing the retaining plate Use a pin from the component side of the board to press onto the threaded bolts of the retaining plate (see circle) and press the plate away from the board. Remove the plate. The easiest way is to use a ballpoint or a little screwdriver which is larger than the diameter of the bolt s thread but not larger than the hole in the board. If the selfsticking synthetic foil remains remains stuck to the system board it should be easy to remove it and stick it to the retaining plate again. Unpack the new system board, place it on an antistatic surface and check the settings (for description see the Technical Manual for the system board D2179). Econel 100 Service Supplement 35

36 Replacing the system board Replacement routines 1 2 Figure 22: Mounting the retaining plate Place the retaining plate on the lower surface of the system board by fitting the threaded bolts of the plate through the location holes (1) on the system board (2). Apply slight pressure to this plate and it will stick to the system board. Turn the system board carefully. 36 Service Supplement Econel 100

37 Replacement routines Replacing the system board 1 2 Figure 23: Socket with protective cover (1) and pin1 mark (2) Remove the protective plastic cover (1) from the processor socket and fit it onto the socket of the defective board which will be sent back to spares. I Returned system boards without this cover probably have to be scrapped (figure 24). Figure 24: Socket with and/or without protective cover Open the locking lever and swing the processor holder on (see also section Replacing the processor on page 27). V CAUTION! The processor can only be installed in one particular direction. Pay attention to the location mark on one of the corners (pin 1). Do not use force to press it into the socket to avoid damaging the pins or the processor. Econel 100 Service Supplement 37

38 Replacing the system board Replacement routines Position the processor over the socket, and press it carefully into the socket. Observe the pin1 mark (figure 23/2). Do not touch the surface of the processor! Swing the processor holder in its initial position and close the locking lever. Open and close the lever slowly until it snaps in the hook. V CAUTION! The processor holder must fall down by itself. Do not close with force, because soldering pads may be damaged. Check the thermal grease on the heat sink. It must be evenly spread and free from contamination. Carefully put the heat sink on the processor socket, paying attention to the correct position. Tighten the four screws crosswise if possible with a torque of 0.6 NM (see section Replacing the processor on page 27). Follow the following steps: 1. Turn screw no.1 two/three turns, then will be no tension on the processor when tightening the next screws. 2. Tighten screws no. 2, 3 and 4 in this order, according to the figure 17 on page Tighten screw no.1 finally. Check the heat sink: a small piece paper should fit between the springs. Mount the memory modules onto the new system board (for description see the Options Guide). 38 Service Supplement Econel 100

39 Replacement routines Replacing the system board Insert the system board into the housing by holding it at a slight angle and sliding the connectors into the connector panel. V CAUTION! Always take the system board with both hands! See figure 20 on page 33. Never lift the system board one-sided or at the heat sink, because the solder connections between the socket and the board come under tension and increase the risk of damage and malfunction! Don t damage the EMI springs to comply with applicable EMC regulations and satisfy cooling requirements and fire protection measures. Figure 25: Centering rings Carefully place the system board into the housing. Make sure there are no cables jammed under the system board. Econel 100 Service Supplement 39

40 Replacing the system board Replacement routines Adjust the system board. If necessary adjust the position of the system board with a gentle twisting motion. I When the system board is in the right position the centering rings engage in the holes indicated. Fasten the system board with the 10 screws. Reconnect all cables to the system board (see cabling in the Options Guide). Insert all controller in the relevant slots and reconnect the cables (for description see Options Guide). Place the new system fan onto the support rail on the server s bottom and press it in the direction of the arrow until it clicks audibly into place. Connect the system fan cable to the connector FAN2 on the system board. Hook in the cross-beam at the right side (see figure 18 on page 31). Swing the cross-beam to the left side and press the cross-beam at the left side in the housing until it engages. Swing the power supply unit back and return the server to its original installation location. Close the server (for a detailed description see the Options Guide) and reconnect the power plug. Connect all external cables. V CAUTION! After installing the new system board, it is necessary to update the BIOS to ensure proper operation (for description see the BIOS Manual). I In the Econel 100 the ChassisID prom is situated on the system board. After installing the new system board, it is necessary to program the ChassisID prom with the help of the "ChassisIDProm Tool" to enable ServerView and ServerStart to identify the system. You will find the tool on the ServerSupport CD and/or it can be downloaded from the Fujitsu Siemens Computers Service and Support page (URL: 40 Service Supplement Econel 100
