5 1 Preface The PRIMERGYBX630 S2 scalable server blade is an AMD-based server blade designed for the PRIMERGY BX600 S3 basic unit. It can also be operated in slots 1-3 and 5-9 of the BX600 S2 basic unit. The BX630 S2 scalable server blade can be installed as a dual-socket server blade or, in a multi-blade configuration, as a quad-socket server blade. 1.1 Concept and target groups This Options Guide shows you how to extend and upgrade your server. 7 Preface Extensions and conversions 1.3 Extensions and conversions Second processor If only one processor is installed in your server blade, you can upgrade it to include a second one. You may only use processors of the same type in the server blade. The second processor must have the same clock frequency as the first. Extending the main memory The system board of the BX630 S2 scalable server blade has four memory banks with two 184-pin DDR2 DIMM slots each. This allows a maximum memory configuration of 32 GB. Each memory bank can be fitted with 512 Mbyte, 1 Gbyte, 2 Gbyte or 4 Gbyte registered DDR2 667 MHz PC memory modules. The two memory modules of one bank must always be fitted in pairs and have the same capacity. Optional I/O module The server blade can be equipped with a 4-Gbit FC I/O module or a 1-Gbit Ethernet I/O module. To allow use of the additional I/O functionality, at least one FC pass-thru blade (or switch blade) or Ethernet LAN pass-thru blade (or switch blade) must be installed in the NET3 and/or NET4 slots of the PRIMERGY BX600 basic unit. Multi-blade configuration You can upgrade the BX630 S2 scalable server blade to a quad-socket server blade by connecting two dual-socket server blades, see section Configurations on page 10. First of all please familiarize yourself with the safety instructions in the chapter Safety instructions on page 15. Make sure that all the manuals you need are available and print out the PDF files if necessary. You will definitely need the operating manuals of the server blade and of your BX600 S2 or BX600 S3 basic unit. Shut down the server blade correctly, switch it off and remove it from the basic unit as described in the Completion. Extend or upgrade your server blade as described in the relevant chapter. I The installation and removal of the hot-plug components is described in the Operating Manual supplied with the server blade. Close the server blade, place it back in the basic unit and switch on the server blade as described in chapter Completion on page 57. 15 3 Safety instructions I The following safety instructions are also provided in the manual Safety notes and other important information. This device meets the relevant safety regulations for IT equipment. If you have any questions about whether you can install the server in the intended environment, please contact your sales outlet or our customer service team. V CAUTION! During installation and before operating the device, observe the instructions on environmental conditions for your device. If the device is brought in from a cold environment, condensation may form both inside and on the outside of the device. Wait until the device has acclimatized to room temperature and is absolutely dry before starting it up. Material damage may be caused to the device if this requirement is not observed. Transport the device only in the original packaging or in packaging that protects it from knocks and jolts. Installation and Operation V CAUTION! 16 Safety instructions V CAUTION! When installing the server blade in the basic unit, beware of the energy hazard at the midplane contacts. A short-circuit on these contacts may damage the system. Data cables must be adequately shielded to avoid interference. For the LAN wiring, the requirements according to standards EN and EN /2 apply. The minimum requirement is the use of a protected LAN line of category 5 for 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, and/or category 5e for Gigabit Ethernet. The requirements of the specification ISO/IEC must also be taken into account. Route the cables in such a way that they do not form a potential hazard (tripping) and cannot be damaged. When connecting the device, refer to the relevant notes in the Operating Manual. Do not connect or disconnect any data transmission cables during a thunderstorm (lightning hazard). Be careful to ensure that no objects (e.g. jewelry, paper clips etc.) or liquids get inside the device (electric shock, short circuit). In emergencies (e.g. damaged casing, control elements or cables, penetration of liquids or foreign bodies), switch off the device immediately, unplug it from the grounded power outlets, and contact your customer service center. Proper operation of the device (in accordance with IEC60950/EN 60950) is only ensured if the casing is completely assembled and the rear covers for the installation openings are in place (electric shock, cooling, fire protection, interference suppression). Install only system extensions that satisfy the requirements and rules governing safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and telecommunications terminal equipment. If you install other extensions, you may damage the system or violate these safety regulations. Information on which system extensions are suitable can be obtained from the customer service center or your sales outlet. 16 Options Guide BX630 S2

The components marked with a warning label (e.g. lightning symbol) may only be opened, removed, or exchanged by authorized, qualified personnel, with the exception of the hot-plug/hot-swap components. If you cause a defect on the device by installing or exchanging system extensions, the warranty will be invalidated. Only set the resolutions and refresh rates specified in the operating manual for your monitor. Batteries V CAUTION! Otherwise, you may damage the monitor. If you are in any doubt, contact your sales outlet or customer service center. Incorrect replacement of batteries can lead to risk of explosion. The batteries may only be replaced with identical batteries or with a type recommended by the manufacturer (see Options Guide). Do not throw batteries into the trash can. They must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations on special waste. The German battery act obligates consumers in Germany to return waste batteries to the distributor or to the return points established by the public waste management authorities. Replace the lithium battery on the system board only as described in the Options Guide. All batteries containing pollutants are marked with a crossed-out garbage can accompanied by the chemical symbol of the heavy metal that classifies the battery as a pollutant: Cd Cadmium Hg Mercury Pb Lead BX630 S2 Options Guide 17

18 Safety instructions Modules with electrostatic-sensitive components Systems and components that might be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD) are marked with the following label: Figure 4: ESD label When you handle components fitted with ESDs, you must observe the following points under all circumstances: Remove the power plug before installing or removing components containing ESDs. You must always discharge yourself of static charges (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working. The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges. Only touch the components at the positions highlighted in green (touch points). Do not touch any exposed pins or conductors on a component. Use a grounding cable designed for this purpose to connect yourself to the system unit as you install components. Place all components on a static-safe base. I You will find a detailed description for handling ESD components in the relevant European or international standards (DIN EN , ANSI/ESD S20.20). 18 Options Guide BX630 S2

19 4 Preparation V CAUTION! Please observe the safety information in the chapter Safety instructions on page 15. Exit all applications and shut down the server blade correctly. Press the On/Off button on the server blade control panel. Removing the server blade from the basic unit 2 1 Press the two touch points (1) to unlock the handles. Take off the housing cover. The server blade components are now freely accessible (see figure 1 on page 8). BX630 S2 Options Guide 21

23 5 Processors V CAUTION! Make sure you observe the safety notes in the chapter Safety instructions on page 15. Processors are components which are extremely sensitive to electrostatic discharge and must be handled with caution. When you take a processor out of its protective wrapper or out of a socket, place it on an insulated, antistatic surface with the smooth side down. Never slide a processor over a surface. 5.1 Installing a second processor The BX630 S2 dual-socket server blade can be upgraded with a second processor. The upgrade kit includes a processor and a heat sink. V CAUTION! Always use processors of the same type. All processors must have the same frequency and cache size. For multi-processor mode use a suitable multi-processor operating system. Open the server blade as described in the chapter Preparation on page 19. I The BX630 S2 server blades may have two different processor sockets, see figure 8: BX630 S2 Options Guide 23

Differences in handling a Tyco processor socket are indicated in the relevant steps. 2 1 Figure 9: Processor socket variant 1: Opening the socket Remove the protective cover by lifting it at the edge (1). Release the locking lever (2) by first pressing it down and then swiveling it up as far as it will go. 24 Options Guide BX630 S2

The processor can only be installed in one direction. Make sure that the recesses on the processor (A) are aligned with the corresponding positioning elements (lugs) on the socket. Lock the locking lever by pressing it under the bracket (1) on the processor socket. BX630 S2 Options Guide 27

When locking the Tyco processor socket, make sure that the small clips on the locking frame (A) slide under the corresponding brackets on the outer socket frame, see figure 14. 31 6 Memory The system board of the PRIMERGYBX630 S2 scalable server blade has four memory banks, comprising eight slots, which can be fitted in pairs with 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB or 4 GB DDR2 667 memory modules. The board supports a maximum memory configuration of 32 GB. Figure 17: PC3200 DDR SDRAM module A The memory modules are marked with a dent (A) so that you cannot install them the wrong way round. Slots DIMM 5 through DIMM 8 are assigned to CPU 2, i.e. they can only be fitted if CPU 2 is installed. The following rules also apply: The DIMM slots must be fitted one bank at a time. A memory bank comprises two DIMM slots. The two DIMM modules of one bank must have the same type (identical capacity, identical clock rate, single ranked or dual ranked). If only CPU 1 is installed: Start with DIMM 1+2 followed by DIMM 3+4. If CPU 1 and CPU 2 are installed: Start with DIMM 1+2 followed by DIMM 5+6, then DIMM 3+4 followed by DIMM Options Guide BX630 S2

33 Memory Fitting rules If you have a quad-socket configuration: Start with DIMM 1+2 followed by DIMM 5+6 in the master module, then DIMM 1+2 followed by DIMM 5+6 in the slave module. Install additional DIMMs in DIMM 3+4 followed by DIMM 7+8 in the master module, followed by DIMM 3+4 and DIMM 7+8 in the slave module. If you install memory modules for a CPU which have different memory capacities, you must first install the modules with the lower memory capacity. BX630 S2 Options Guide 33

34 Replacing memory modules Memory 6.2 Replacing memory modules V CAUTION! Note the safety instructions and the information on handling electrostatically sensitive devices on page 18. Install the memory modules very carefully. Too much pressure can damage the ejection tabs. Remove the server blade from the basic unit and open it as described in the chapter Preparation on page Figure 19: Removing a memory module Fold the tabs outwards on both sides of the relevant slot (1). If a memory module was already installed in the slot: Remove the memory module from the slot (2). 34 Options Guide BX630 S2

37 7 Optional I/O module The PRIMERGYBX630 S2 dual-socket server blade can be equipped with an additional I/O module. For this purpose, the server blade has a special slot for an extension board (I/O daughter card) (see figure 24 on page 41). The following I/O daughter cards are available for the BX630 S2 server blade: 4-Gbit Fibre Channel daughter card (PCIe) 1-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) 10-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) I To allow use of the additional I/O functionality, at least one FC I/O blade or an Ethernet I/O blade must be installed in slot NET3 and/or NET4 of the PRIMERGY BX600 S2 or BX600 S3 basic unit. For further information on I/O blades, see the operating manual for your basic unit. It is not possible to mix Fibre Channel I/O blades and Ethernet I/O blades in slots NET3 and NET4 of the basic unit. BX630 S2 Options Guide 37

38 Optional I/O module 4-Gbit Fibre Channel daughter card (PCIe) Figure 21: 4-Gbit Fibre Channel daughter card (PCIe) The 4-Gbit FC daughter card (PCIe) provides two independent serial 1/2/4- Gbit/s FC ports. It is fitted with an Emulex chip and supports multiple FC storage subsystems of the corresponding versions. I The 4-Gbit FC daughter card can only be used in combination with the 4/4-Gbit FC switch blade. For more information, see the BX600 S3 operating manual. The 4-Gbit FC option is only supported by the BX600 S3 basic unit. 38 Options Guide BX630 S2

39 Optional I/O module 1-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) Figure 22: Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) The 1-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) has two Broadcom 5708S chips and provides two 1-Gbit/s Ethernet ports. TOE (TCP/IP Offload Engine) and iscsi/iscsi Boot are supported. BX630 S2 Options Guide 39

40 Optional I/O module 10-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) Figure 23: 10-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) The 10-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) provides two 10-Gbit/s Ethernet ports. This module also supports TOE (TCP/IP Offload Engine) and iscsi/iscsi Boot. I The 10-Gbit Ethernet daughter card (PCIe) can only be used in combination with the 10-Gbit switch blade 10/2. For further information, see the operating manual for your BX600 S2 or BX600 S3 basic unit. 40 Options Guide BX630 S2

Please observe the safety information in the chapter Safety instructions on page 15 Remove the server blade from the basic unit and open it as described in the chapter Preparation on page 19. A Figure 24: Position for an I/O daughter card Place the I/O daughter card onto the two sockets (A). Fasten the I/O daughter card with three screws. The corresponding nuts on the system board are indicated by arrows in figure 24. BX630 S2 Options Guide 41

43 8 Replacing the battery To allow permanent saving of the system information, a lithium battery is installed which supplies the CMOS memory with power. If the battery charge is too low or the battery is empty, a corresponding error message is displayed. In this case, the lithium battery must be replaced. V CAUTION! Observe the safety notes and the information on handling batteries in the section Batteries on page 17. Incorrect replacement of batteries may result in a risk of explosion. The batteries must be replaced with an identical battery or with a battery type recommended by the manufacturer. Make sure you insert the battery correctly. The positive pole must face toward the inside of the server blade Figure 25: Replacing the battery Press the locking lever in the direction of the arrow (1) and remove the battery from its carrier (2). Insert a new lithium battery of identical type into the carrier (3) and engage it with the lever (4). BX630 S2 Options Guide 43

45 9 Upgrading to a quad-socket server blade This chapter describes how to connect two BX630 S2 dual-socket server blades to form a quad-socket server blade. 9.1 Overview A Figure 26: PRIMERGY BX630 S2 quad-socket server blade The above figure shows a BX630 S2 quad-socket server blade as it is installed in the BX600 S2 or BX600 S3 basic unit. The master module is on the right side, identifiable by the handles and the control elements (A) on the control panel board. The slave module has the handles removed and the control panel has been replaced by a dummy module. The slave module has a fixed connection to the housing cover of the master module. The two modules of the quad-socket server blade exchange data through small circuit boards with printing on both sides, see Quad-socket upgrade kit. I In a PRIMERGY BX630 S2 quad-socket server blade, only processors of the Opteron 83xx MP series are allowed. BX630 S2 Options Guide 45

46 Overview Upgrading to a quad-socket server blade Quad-socket upgrade kit The quad-socket upgrade kit for connecting two PRIMERGY BX630 S2 dualsocket server blades to form a quad-socket server contains the following elements. Three plastic guide elements ensure the exact positioning of the HT-link elements and side-band elements during installation. These guide elements are fastened to the housing cover of the master module, see also Preparing the housing cover of the master module on page 50. 48 Assembly instructions Upgrading to a quad-socket server blade Removing the handles of the slave module The quad-socket server blade is locked in the BX600 S2 or BX600 S3 basic unit using the handles of the master module. Loosen the clamping bracket (2) and disconnect the cable of the control panel board from the connector on the system board. Carefully place the slave module onto the housing of the master module such that it projects 1-2 cm at the back. Make sure that the slave module lies flush with both sides of the master module.
