1 Introduction This Technical Manual describes the system boards of the PRIMERGY 870 server systems, which can be equipped with up to four Intel Xeon processors. You may find further information in the description "BIOS Setup". Further information to drivers is provided in the readme files on hard disk or on the supplied drivers diskettes or on the "Drivers & Utility" or "ServerStart" CD. Notational conventions The meanings of the symbols and fonts used in this manual are as follows: Pay particular attention to texts marked with this symbol. Failure to observe this warning endangers your life, destroys the system, or may lead to loss of data.! i This symbol is followed by supplementary information, remarks and tips. ² Texts which follow this symbol describe activities that must be performed in the order shown. Texts in italics indicate commands or menu item. "Quotation marks" indicate names of chapters and terms that are being emphasized. Overview The PRIMERGY 870 server systems mainly consist of the following plug-in boards: I/O board Processor board Memory board (2x) Interface board SCSI board (3x) Power supply board ECU board Drive board (2x) U41029-J-Z English - 1

3 Abbreviations Important notes Important notes Store this manual close to the device. If you pass on the device to third parties, you should also pass on this manual.! Be sure to read this page carefully and note the information before you open the Server. Please note the information provided in the chapter "Safety" in the Operating Manual of the server. Incorrect replacement of the lithium battery may lead to a risk of explosion. It is therefore essential to observe the instructions in the chapter "I/O board" - "Replacing the lithium battery". The lithium battery must be replaced with an identical battery or a battery type recommended by the manufacturer (CR2032). Do not throw lithium batteries into the trashcan. It must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations concerning special waste. Connecting cables for peripherals must be adequately insulated to avoid interference. Components can become very hot during operation. Make sure you do not touch components when making extensions to the boards. There is a danger of burns!! i The warranty expires if the device is damaged during the installation or replacement of system expansions. Information on which system expansions you can use is available from your sales office or the customer service. Boards with electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD) may be identified by labels. When you handle boards fitted with ESDs, you must observe the following points under all circumstances: You must always discharge yourself (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working. The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges. Pull out the power plug before inserting or pulling out boards containing ESDs. Always hold boards with ESDs by their edges. Never touch pins or conductors on boards fitted with ESDs. U41029-J-Z English - 3

8 I/O board Settings with the switch block Write protection for floppy disks - switch 6 Switch 6 is used to define whether floppy disks can be written or deleted in the floppy disk drive. To write and delete floppy disks, the write -protection in BIOS setup must be disabled (in menu Security, the field Diskette Write must be set to Enabled). on The floppy disk drive is write-protected. off Read, write and delete floppy disks is possible (default setting). Skipping the password query - switch 7 Switch 7 is used to define whether the password is queried at system startup, if the password protection is enabled in BIOS Setup (in Security menu, the Password field must be set to Enabled). on The password query is effective. off The password query is skipped (default setting). Recovering System BIOS - switch 8 Switch 8 enables recovery of the old system BIOS after an attempt to update has failed. To restore the old system BIOS you need a Flash BIOS Diskette (please call our customer service). on The system boots from the "Flash BIOS floppy disk" from Drive A and reprograms the system BIOS on the I/O board. off The system is started with the system BIOS on the I/O board. The system BIOS cannot be reprogrammed. (Default setting) 8 - English U41029-J-Z

15 Add-on modules I/O board Interrupt Request Levels The following applies to all four PCI buses: All INTA# PCI interrupts of a PCI bus are carried on various PCI bus interrupts of the PCI interrupt controller (MINT-ASIC or MINT-ASIC plus PIIX4 for PCI bus 0A). This prevents PC boards in different slots of the same PCI bus from using the same PCI interrupt. The VGA controller, the MINT-ASIC, the I960 I 2 O controller and the PCI-to-PCI bridge do not use PCI interrupts. The following tables show the interrupt assignment of the four PCI buses. PCI-Bus 0-0A The PCI bus interrupts of the compatible 32 bit PCI bus, PCI bus 1-0A, are carried on both the PIIX4 Southbridge and on the MINT-ASIC. 19 Add-on modules Memory boards Memory boards The memory board is equipped with 16 slots for memory modules. The organization in four memory banks A to D enables fast memory access with four-fold interleave. The maximum memory configuration is 4 Gbytes per memory board. 3D 2D 3C 2C 3B 2B 3A 2A 3D 2D 3C 2C 3B 2B 3A 2A 1D 0D 1C 0C 1B 0B 1A 0A 1D 0D 1C 0C 1B 0B 1A 0A Four identical memory modules must be installed per memory bank. Partial equipping of a memory bank is not possible. The equipping sequence of the memory banks is arbitrary. Each slot has a clear address (e.g. 2B): Here the letter specifies the memory bank to which the slot belongs, and the number specifies the slot number within the memory bank. 2B therefore designates slot 2 in memory bank B. The memory modules must meet the following specifications: Socket: DIMM Memory type: EDO-DRAM Voltage: 3.3 V Speed: 50 ns or 60 ns Refresh mode: 2k, 4k or 8k Memory organization: 4Mx72, 8Mx72, 16Mx72 or 32Mx72 Memory size: 32 Mbyte, 64 Mbyte, 128 Mbyte or 256 Mbyte Memory technology: 16 Mbit or 64 Mbit Installing memory modules ² Flip the holders on each side of the relevant location outwards. ² Insert the memory module in the slot while folding the side holders up until the memory module engages. Removing a memory module ² Flip the holders to the right and left of the location outwards. ² Pull the memory module out of its location. U41029-J-Z English - 19
