9 Introduction The streamer SLR60 is a drive for magnetic tape cartridges with a storage capacity of 30 Gbyte (without compression) or 60 Gbyte (with 2:1 compression). The drive is an inexpensive mass storage which is especially suited for the following applications: Backup of hard disk drives Data archiving Data exchange Software distribution Emergency recovery The streamer drive has a SCSI interface of the type Ultra Wide LVD/SE (Low Voltage Differential or Single-Ended). In order to operate the streamer, the computer must therefore have a SCSI host adapter and the appropriate SCSI drivers must be installed. This manual contains all the information you require to install and operate the streamer. Target group To install the drive, you need some knowledge of hardware. Safety This device complies with the relevant safety regulations for data processing equipment, including electronic office machines for use in an office environment. If you have any questions, contact your sales outlet or our customer service center. This device has been developed for use in approved systems with a fire-proof casing (in accordance with IEC 950 / EN 60950). Please observe the notes on power loss and environmental conditions in the "Important notes" chapter of the computer's operating manual. Manufacturer's note CE certificate The shipped version of this drive complies with the requirements of the EC Guideline 89/336/EEC "Electromagnetic compatibility". Compliance was tested in a typical system configuration. When installing the drive, observe the specific installation notes in the Operating Manual or Technical Manual of the receiving device. Cleaning notes To guarantee error-free data processing, cleaning of the write/read heads is requested by the drive on a regular basis after approximately 50 hours of tape operation. The cleaning prompt may also be made sooner if the write/read heads are particularly dirty (see section "Meaning of the indicators").! Only use cleaning cartridges (dry cleaning) of the type "TDS DPCC 6000" (see the section "How to order magnetic tape cartridges and cleaning cartridges"). 11 Notes on working with magnetic tape cartridges Although magnetic tape cartridges do not require any special maintenance, some basic rules should be followed:! General The cartridges must be kept out of direct sunlight. The cartridges are not to be placed near magnetic fields. During operation The cartridges are not to be operated in high-humidity and in dusty environments. Do not remove the magnetic tape cartridge from the drive while it is being read or written. Do not switch off the system while a magnetic tape cartridge is being read or written. Always leave the protective cover over the opening for the write/read head. Never touch the magnetic tape. New magnetic tape cartridges should be acclimatized to the ambient temperature up to four hours prior to use. As a rule, new magnetic tape cartridges should be wound forward once to the end of the tape and rewound to the beginning, and the drive then cleaned using a cleaning cartridge (see the section "Cleaning notes".) Storage Always observe the conditions for storing archiving cartridges (see the chapter "Technical data"). The cartridges are not to be stored in high-humidity and in dusty environments. Always keep the magnetic tape cartridges in the protective covers provided. The cartridges must never be stored in high temperatures. The maximum capacity of 30/60 Gbyte is reached, for example, when a magnetic tape cartridge of the type "Imation SLR" is used. A26361-H645-Z English - 3

13 How to order magnetic tape cartridges and cleaning cartridges i Magnetic tape cartridges and cleaning cartridges (dry cleaning) for the streamer can be ordered directly from: IT Distribution Shop (formerly Siemens Plus Shop) Telephone: / , Fax: / Installing the streamer! Please note the information provided in the operating manual of the computer or in the "Safety, Guarantee and Ergonomics" booklet. The following steps must be performed to install the streamer: Setting the jumpers (e. g. SCSI address, parity) Mounting the streamer Connecting the streamer i The drivers required for operating SCSI drives are either part of the operating system or are provided with the software. Setting jumpers There is a jumper block on the back of the streamer with 16 jumpers. These default settings depend on the relevant system configuration. 14 Parity checking (PAR) The streamer supports the SCSI bus parity check function. Jumper PAR inserted = Parity check enabled Jumper PAR not inserted = Parity check disabled SCSI address (SELECT) Every device on the SCSI bus must have its own SCSI address (ID). The SCSI address for the streamer is set using the SELECT jumpers (0, 1, 2 and 3). By default, SCSI address 7 is reserved for the SCSI controller. Devices that are not connected to the end of the SCSI bus must not be terminated. If you run the streamer as the last device on the SCSI bus, you must connect an active wide SCSI terminating resistor to the SCSI interface of the drive. The active wide SCSI terminating resistor can either already have been integrated in the SCSI cable or be connected as a separate connector. i The streamer has no integrated terminating resistor. Terminator Power (TPWR) The TPWR jumper sets the power supply for the terminating resistors on the SCSI bus. The terminating resistors can be provided with power by the streamer or the SCSI bus. 15 Installing the streamer The streamer requires a 5 ¼" mounting location half height. It can be installed horizontally or vertically.! When mounting the streamer, ensure that the ventilation slits on the streamer are kept free. Ê Install the streamer as described in the operating manual or technical manual for the computer. Connecting the streamer = Power supply connector 2 = Wide SCSI interface Ê Plug the power supply cable (4-pin) into the power supply socket of the streamer (1). Ê Plug the Wide SCSI cable (68-pin) into the Wide SCSI interface of the streamer (2). A26361-H645-Z English - 7

16 Using the streamer = Eject button 2 = "Fault" indicator 3 = "Activity" indicator 4 = "Ready" indicator Streamer self-test If the system status is not completely defined, you can perform a self-test to obtain information about the state of the drive. For the self-test, you will require a magnetic tape cartridge that is not write-protected.! Write operations are performed during the self-test: files on the magnetic tape will be overwritten! Use an empty magnetic tape cartridge. Ê Make sure there is no cartridge in the drive. Ê Press and hold the Eject button for at least 6 seconds. The "Fault" indicator flashes slowly. The service mode is activated. Ê Within the next 15 seconds, slide the cartridge slowly into the drive until the autoload mechanism starts to pull the magnetic tape cartridge in. The self-test is started. The "Ready" indicator flashes. Self-test results If the self-test does not encounter any errors, the magnetic tape cartridge is ejected. No indicator is lit. If the self-test encounters an error, the magnetic tape cartridge is not ejected. 17 Meaning of the indicators When the computer is switched on, the streamer carries out a self-test. The indicators are illuminated or flash during this test. During operation, the indicators have the following meaning: "Ready" (green) Indicators "Activity" (green) "Fault" (amber) Drive state OFF OFF OFF Cartridge is not loaded. OFF OFF ON Cartridge not loaded, cleaning required ON OFF OFF Cartridge loaded, no tape movement ON Flashing OFF Cartridge loaded, tape movement ON OFF ON Cartridge loaded, no tape movement, cleaning required ON Flashing ON Cartridge loaded, tape movement, cleaning required ON Flashing OFF Cartridge is being loaded/unloaded ON Flashing ON Cartridge is being loaded/unloaded, cleaning required OFF Flashing ON Cleaning OFF OFF Flashing Unrecoverable drive failure, cartridge failure or MICROCODE DOWNLOAD failure i The "Fault" indicator flashing is indicating a hardware failure. The drive is not ready for use. In this instance, please contact our customer service center. The "Fault" indicator steady ON indicates that a head cleaning operation is recommended (see section "Cleaning notes"). The drive is still fully operational. The "Fault" indicator is reset by operating the cleaning cartridge in the drive. A26361-H645-Z English - 9

18 Loading a cartridge! When inserting the magnetic tape cartridge, ensure that the label side is facing up. The side on which the magnetic tape is visible must be on the right. Ê Slide the cartridge slowly into the drive until the autoload mechanism starts pulling the cartridge in. Once initialization has been completed, the "Ready" indicator is illuminated. Unloading a cartridge Ê Push the eject button. The ongoing command is terminated and buffered data will be written to the tape. Depending on the application, the inserted cartridge will be rewound. This may take up to three minutes. The magnetic tape cartridge will then be ejected from the unloading mechanism. Ê Remove the tape cartridge from the drive English A26361-H645-Z
