1 Introduction Autoloader TX24 The magnetic tape cartridge (MTC) autoloader FibreCAT TX24 is supported by the operating system BS2000/OSD (which is part of the software package OSD/XC) on SX servers. As of July 2006, it replaces the MTC autoloaders 9084 (110 and 221F) in Fujitsu Siemens Computers product portfolio, and ensures continued compatible operation of the magnetic tape cartridges used in the 9084 autoloaders. This document provides a complete description of those properties of the MTC autoloader, that are relevant for the operating system BS2000/OSD, as well as hints for its usage. It addresses BS2000 administrators, who are concerned with planning for and operation of the MTC autoloader FibreCAT TX24 with BS2000/OSD. The user guide "MTC Chargers and F, Operation under BS2000/OSD" does not apply to the MTC autoloader FibreCAT TX24. It is assumed that installation and start up (including connection to the SX server, connection to the administration LAN and configuration in Solaris/X2000) of the MTC autoloader FibreCAT TX24 is performed by a service engineer. In the following, the MTC autoloader FibreCAT TX24 is referred to as TX24. About this Document This document is valid for firmware revision levels C118 and later of the tape library. Level C118 is available as from February Display of the firmware level of the library: The firmware level is displayed in the operator panel by navigating the menu Lib -> Library-ID The firmware level is displayed in the welcome page of the Web interface. See example in section The firmware level of the LTO drive is not displayed in the operator panel. It is only displayed in the welcome page of the Web interface. History: Changes from previous revision level (November 2007): Specification of further released firmware versions of the library (see the release matrix) Restriction regarding the use of the CS12 controller Changes from previous revision level (July 2007): Specification of further released firmware versions of the library (see the release matrix) Specification of released firmware versions of the LTO drive Completion of the list of SX servers which support the TX24 Changes from previous revision level (February 2007): Specification of the released software and firmware versions in a release matrix Release of the TX24 to be used on SX100-D and SX160 servers Page 2 of 18
Changes from previous revision level (September 2006, firmware level C113): Some restrictions concerning the use of the I/E port were lifted (for remaining restrictions see section on using the I/E port) LTO-3 tape drives are supported Attachment to Fibre Channel Interfaces is supported Related Publications The complete TX24 operating manual can be found on Fujitsu Siemens Computers support pages: Downloads (e.g. the library firmware referred to above) are available at (Notice: Only firmware versions specified in the release matrix are allowed to be installed!) Advanced information on the efficient usage of the TX24 (e.g. with LTO-3 tape drives) can be found at General information on the usage of MTC drives attached to SX servers can be found in manual SX Series Business Servers - Operation and Administration in chapter 9.4 Magnetic Tape Cassette Drives (see Any restrictions on the operation of TX24 in the BS2000 operating system can be found in the release notes. 4 2 Characteristics 2.1 General Characteristics The TX24 is a flat device, designed to be mounted in a rack, which can hold up to 24 LTO Ultrium magnetic tape cartridges in two magazines and which can contain up to two tape drives. An integrated robot (cartridge handling mechanism (CRM)) loads and unloads the tape drives. The TX24 can be ordered with tape drives in one of the options: a single LTO-3 tape drive or one or two LTO-2 tape drives. The TX24 has two magazines (starting from the basic option) and can be ordered for use with 12 or with 24 cartridges. If it is to operate with 24 cartridges an activation key has to be purchased for the second (left) magazine to be activated.. ( The second magazine can be activated from the operation panel by setting the magazine count to 2 and entering the activation key navigating the following menu: Lib -> Library Settings -> Storage Settings -> Magazine Count -> Modify -> Magazine Key A barcode reader is integrated into the CRM so that tapes can be addressed through the identifiers on the labels of the cartridges. Cartridges can be inserted and removed through an import/export port (I/E port) without the need to remove a magazine. Therefore the time-consuming complete update of the device inventory after insertion of a magazine can be avoided; the device inventory being updated instead on insertion or removal of a cartridge by reading only one label. Options for connecting the library to the SX Server Depending on the type of the tape drive the TX24 can be connected to the host in one of the following ways: through the SCSI interface for LTO-2 drives through the Fibre Channel interface for LTO-3 drives, either directly or using a switch LAN port The TX24 has a LAN (Ethernet) port for accessing the library s web interface, which permits easy administration of the TX24. The web interface provides remote the functions of the library s operation panel, and permits firmware updates and the creation of diagnostic information. 2.2 Release with OSD/XC When used from BS2000 partitions of SX servers, the TX24 has the following characteristics: One MTC drive For use from SX servers, the TX24 is released with one MTC drive only. One of the following options for the device type may be selected when an order is placed o LTO-2 tape drive with SCSI connectivity o LTO-3 tape drive with FC connectivity Page 4 of 18
Ultrium-1 and Utrium-2 MTCs can be used in LTO-2 drives. Ultrium-2 and Ultrium-3 MTCs can be used in LTO-3 drives without restrictions. Ultrium-1 cartridges can only be read. SCSI controller (for connecting an LTO-2 drive) The TX24 is released only for connection to SCSI controllers of the type CS12 (SX70F- CS12 SCSI U320 controller, LVD, dual port). Therefore a TX24 can be used by one SX server only, on partitionable SX servers by one partition only. Fibre Channel controller (for connecting an LTO-3 drive) For fibre channel connections the TX24 may be connected directly to any FC controller released with SX servers or indirectly over a switch. A TX24 connected over a switch can be used at more than one SX partitions or SX100 servers. Configuration of the device and the conditions that have to be satisfied for coordinated access to the device (basically, the SX partitions or SX servers have to belong to a single administration domain of PRIMEPOWER Server View) are described in manual SX Series Business Servers - Operation and Administration in chapter 9.4 Magnetic tape cartridge devices. Page 5 of 18
2.3 Hardware, Firmware and Software Requirements Hardware The TX24 is supported by the SX100-C, SX100-D, SX140, SX150 und SX160 servers. This applies both for LTO-2 drives with SCSI connection and for LTO-3 drives with Fibre Channel connection. For the TX24 connected to a SCSI controller of the type CS12 the following restriction must be considered: A TX24 must use the CS12 controller exclusively. That means that the second slot on the CS12 controller may not be used in parallel. BS2000 The TX24 is supported by BS2000/OSD as from OSD/XC V1.0. For use with OSD/XC V1.0 correction packet 1/2006 or later than is required. LTO-3: The TX24 with LTO-3 drive is supported as from OSD/XC V2.1 (based on BS2000/OSD V6.0B) with products HSMS/ARCHIVE V8.0B and FDDRL V16.0 X2000 The TX24 with SCSI interface is supported by X2000 as from V3.0A08. The TX24 with Fibre Channel interface and LTO-3 drive is supported as from X2000 V3.0A09 New installations (SX100-C and SX150) later than in July 2006 comprise this X2000 version, elder systems must be brought to the new X2000 level, if need be. 8 The firmware version of the LTO drive The following specification for the firmware version of the LTO drive has to be attended carefully: LTO2 Drives (SCSI connection) S33U LTO3 Drives (FC connection) 64D0 2.4 Device Type and Volume Type, Device Selection LTO-2 drives have the following characteristics in the BS2000/OSD operating system: Device type: LTO-U2 (printable) or CC (device type code) Volume type: TAPE-U2 (printable) or CC (device type code) Sense ID on the SCSI bus: FFB CC00 LTO-3 drives have the following characteristics in the BS2000/OSD operating system: Device type: LTO-U3 (printable) or CD (device type code) Volume type: TAPE-U3 (printable) or CD (device type code) Sense ID on the SCSI bus: FFB CD Operational Modes The TX24 has two operational modes: Random mode and Sequential mode. These operational modes are suspended during some actions temporarily(i.e. for the duration of the operation), for instance when a cartridge is being imported or exported. In these cases, the device displays Manual mode and BS2000/OSD reports that the device is NOT in the Random mode. Switching explicitly between Random and Sequential mode is possible. In Random mode the application software on the server controls when which cartridge is inserted or ejected. Random mode is the default operational mode and the normal operational mode when the TX24 is used by BS2000/OSD (see the next section). From the point of view of BS2000/OSD, the Sequential mode corresponds to an automatic or manual mode with tape sets the tapes are automatically processed in sequence. The Sequential mode has the additional options Loop and Restart: When the Loop option is activated, operation is continued after the last tape with the first tape; otherwise the TX24 stops and waits for operator intervention. When the Restart option is activated, operation is continued with the first tape after a change of the magazine, reset or restart; otherwise operation is resumed with the last processed cartridge. The Sequential mode is suspended for the duration of an operator action. Page 8 of 18
3 Usage in BS2000/OSD 3.1 Usage of the Random Mode Normal operational mode In BS2000/OSD, the normal operational mode of the TX24 is the Random mode. In the Random mode the application software in BS2000/OSD controls when which cartridge is inserted or removed. Temporary suspension during operator actions When certain manual operator actions are started (from the operator panel or through the Web interface), the TX24 goes into Manual mode for the duration of this action. When the action has been completed it switches back into Random mode. Examples of such operator actions are import or export of a cartridge: A cartridge is moved into or out of the I/E port by means of Move and Import or Export. Operator actions may interfere with ongoing processing in the TX24. The conditions to be observed in this connection are described in detail in note 2 of section 3.5 Import and Export of Cartridges the I/E Port The following messages on the BS2000 console indicate a mode change: NKVT116 DEVICE '(&00)' IS NO LONGER IN RANDOM MODE NKVT115 DEVICE '(&00)' IS IN RANDOM MODE As can be seen a distinction is only made between whether the device is in Random mode or not. Note When the device is attached by means of the command /ATTACH-DEVICE the Random mode cannot be activated in the following cases: The magazine is empty Only the I/E port and/or the cleaning slot hold a cartridge The Tape drive has already been loaded with a cartridge In these cases the following sequence of messages is displayed on the BS2000 console: % NKVT115 DEVICE '(&00)' IS IN RANDOM MODE % NKVT118 INVENTORY FOR DEVICE '(&00)' NOT POSSIBLE. MODE IS SET TO MANUAL % NKVT116 DEVICE '(&00)' IS NO LONGER IN RANDOM MODE Page 9 of 18
3.2 Information Services Information about the cartridges of an MTC unit in Random mode is displayed in BS2000/OSD by issuing the command /SHOW-TAPE-STATUS, INFORMATION = *CARTRIDGE-LOADER. For every data cartridge cell and for the tape drive an output line is displayed. If for another MTC unit a message for a cartridge of this unit is pending, a further output line with the corresponding contents for this cartridge is generated. The example below shows the output generated for a TX24 with two magazines: /SHOW-TAPE-STATUS UNIT=7100,INFORMATION=*CARTRIDGE-LOADER % MNEM VSN USE LABEL DEV-A VOL-A PHASE ACTION CAR % DMS STD 99QE EXCL IN-USE NO ACTION RAN % IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN % 7100 ANA062 IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN % IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN % 7100 ANA066 IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN % 7100 ANA073 IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN % 7100 ANA079 IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN % IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN % 7100 U20012 IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN % IN-CAR NO ACTION RAN The Random operational mode is indicated in column CAR by the string RAN. In the first line, the state of the drive is displayed: The tape with VSN is mounted and used exclusively by DMS. The neutral position of the tape with VSN is slot 5. Slot 1, which is configured as I/E port, is not displayed by BS2000/OSD, so that a cartridge in this slot is not shown. Slot 2, which is configured as cleaning slot, is not displayed by BS2000/OSD, so that a cartridge in this slot is not shown either. In the Web interface the device inventory associated with this configuration is displayed as follows it should be noted that the neutral position of the cartridge with VSN , slot 5, is not shown: Page 10 of 18
Note: For the Sequential operational mode only one line with the state of the drive is displayed. Example for a neutral state in Sequential mode: /SHOW-TAPE-STATUS UNIT = 7100, INFORMATION = *CARTRIDGE-LOADER MNEM VSN USE LABEL DEV-A VOL-A PHASE ACTION CAR STD FREE FREE ONLINE NO ACTION AUT The Sequential operational mode is displayed by AUT (automatic) in column CAR. 3.3 Automatic Reassignment of Mount Messages If a load request occurs for a cartridge, which is in a magazine of the TX24, this request can be satisfied only with this particular MTC unit. If, however, this MTC unit is already in use at that time and in Random mode, this request is first of all re-assigned to another MTC unit of appropriate type. In the process the corresponding PREMOUNT-/REMOUNT- or MOUNT message is output. In the Random mode, after every release of an MTC unit a check is made of whether a PREMOUNT-/REMOUNT- or MOUNT message is pending for a cartridge in Page 11 of 18
the magazine or on the fixed storing positions. If this is the case, the message is automatically answered by the tape monitor (TM task) with the mnemonic of the released MTC unit; this causes the requested cartridge to be loaded. 3.4 Errors during Tape Processing If an error occurs during tape processing (e.g. I/O ERROR MOVE, WRITE PERMISSION MISSING), the reaction depends on the selected operational mode: Sequential mode The cartridge is unloaded into its original cell and the REMOUNT message NKVT014 is issued. Manipulation of the volume (e.g. removal of the write protection) or mounting it on another MTC unit requires the removal of the magazine. After the magazine has been re-inserted, creation of a new cartridge inventory is started. Depending on the current setting of the Restart Option either the next cartridge of the current processing sequence or the first cartridge of the magazine is loaded. Random mode The cartridge is unloaded into the I/E port and the REMOUNT message NKVT014 is issued. Manipulation of the volume (e.g. removal of the write protection) or mounting it on another MTC unit is possible by removing the volume from the I/E port. This way the Random operational mode is not interrupted. After the I/E port door has been closed an update of the cartridge inventory is started. After the REMOUNT message has been answered the volume is reloaded again, if necessary, and processing continues. 3.5 Import and Export of Cartridges; the I/E Port Update of cartridge inventory after removal of a magazine When new cartridges are to be imported into an MTC unit, the Random mode is terminated by the BS2000/OSD system when the magazine is removed. After the magazine has been inserted and the port door has been closed again, a complete update of the cartridge inventory is started, all cartridges being recorded in the inventory. After successful inventory the Random mode for the MTC unit will be reactivated by the BS2000/OSD system. The I/E port (import/export port) The TX24 features the option to configure the first slot as I/E port (see the subsection Configuration of the I/E Port ), over which cartridges can be inserted and removed also when the device is closed. In this way the time-consuming complete update of the device inventory involving all cartridges after the port door has been opened or closed can be avoided. Only a partial update of the inventory of the I/E port is performed. Note1: If the I/E port has been configured, the corresponding slot is no longer visible from BS2000/OSD. This means that this slot is not shown by the command /SHOW-TAPE- Page 12 of 18
STATUS <mn>, INFORMATION = *CARTRIDGE-LOADER. However, if the drive requests a tape (MOUNT message on the console), this tape is has to be placed in the I/E port and is loaded from there (and possibly unloaded from there later on). Note 2: When an import or export action is performed, the following conditions have to be met: No BS2000 process (e.g. archiving) involving the TX24 may be active at that point nor may such a process be initiated during that time. Before importing or exporting a cartridge care has to be taken that the state of the TX24 is neutral No cartridge must be located in the drive at that point. For this purpose the following settings may be checked using the Web interface: Page Home -> Status. Settings Library Status: Motion: Idle and Tape Drive Status: Empty Page Home -> Inventory : Target slot may be empty or occupied. These settings read fromt the library s operator panel as follows: Lib: Idle and Drive 1: Empty The status of the slots may be determined by navigating the menu Library -> Inventory - > View Slots If these conditions are not met correct operation of the TX24 in the BS2000 operating system cannot be guaranteed after an import or export action. As an additional safeguard against an operating error the following warning, that has to be acknowledged, is issued if the device is operated through the Web interface (but not if it is operated by means of the operator panel!): After this command has been executed the library will be off-line for a short time. Current backup or restore processing may be interrupted; this may lead to a complete update of the inventory. Do you still want to proceed? BS2000/OSD will not be informed by the library about an import or export action. Therefore after such an action the commands /DETACH-DEVICE and /ATTACH-DEVICE have to be executed for the MTC device, to assure that BS2000/OSD reads in the correct inventory. 3.6 Initialization of Volumes In the Random mode, volumes can be initialized with the BS2000 initialization utilities (e.g. with utility INIT). When performing an initialization, care has to be taken that barcode VSN (barcode label on the MTC) und SVL-VSN (value within BS2000/OSD) are identical. Page 13 of 18
4 Connection and Operation 4.1 Configuration for BS2000/OSD The configuration as tape device in BS2000/OSD is performed with application Bs2Devices of the PRIMEPOWER ServerView Suite (PWSV). Tab BS2 Tapes has to be selected. On the sub-tab Not Configured tape the TX24 is displayed as HP Ultrium 2-SCSI or IBM ULTIRUM-TD3 drive depending on the device type The pathname of the Solaris device nodes for these devices takes the form /dev/rmt/<nn>cn. By selecting the approproate line and clicking on the pushbutton BS2 Tapes the function Configure Tapes is invoked. The popup window Configure Tapes appears. After the MN, Host-Connector and Unit number have been speicified and the select box the active has been clicked, the device is accessible in BS2000/OSD through this MN. Example: A TX24 device with mnemonic 7100 is to be configured. On the BS2000 console a message is issued that the device was discovered: IOD0869 RKF05 DEVICE MN=7100 ACTIVATED Initially, it is in the BS2000 state DETACHED; it may be attached, if desired, by issuing the command /ATTACH-DEVICE: /SHOW-DEVICE-STATUS XAAD MNEM DEV-TYPE CONF-STATE POOL VSN DEV-A PHASE ACTION +XAAD 7100 LTO-U2 DETACHED SW FREE NO ACTION Page 14 of 18
4.2 Device Settings User Interfaces The operator panel All settings can be performed at the operator panel, which consists of 4 buttons and an LCD display directly on the device; information may also be displayed on the operator panel. The Web interface The Web interface referred to in the manual as Remote Management Utility offers, to a large extent, the same functionality as the operator panel at the device. For accessing it through the Web interface the TX24 has to be connected to the LAN, and its IP address has to be configured at the operator panel. Then the welcome page of the device can be called from a Web browser by entering the URL: address> or if the name has been made known to the name service. Example: Note: Both operator interfaces permit selection of a language, e.g. English, English being the default language. If direct access to the German or another language interface of the Web interface is desired the URL of the German welcome page should be stored as a bookmark Page 15 of 18
4.2.2 Setting the Operational Mode The (permanent) operational mode Random mode or Sequential mode must be set explicitly, if necessary. The Random mode is the default operational mode. This can be done, for instance, through the Web interface in the following way: Home-Page Configure Mode Control Mode = Random + Update LAN Connection and Configuration LAN connection The LAN cable must be attached to the Ethernet port (at the back of the device). Configuration of the IP address The LAN configuration is performed by means of the menu of the operator panel: Lib Library Settings Ethernet The following items must be configured in sequence: DHCP - No DHCP; a static IP address is recommended. (Static) IP address Net mask Gateway address. Then the welcome page of the device can be called from a Web browser by entering the IP address or, if applicable, the name of the TX Configuration of the I/E Port The first slot of the right magazine can be used as I/E port (I/E = Import/Export). This function is activated (or deactivated) at the operator panel in the following way: Lib Library Settings Storage Settings I/E-Port Enabled/Disabled In BS2000/OSD the slot, which has been configured as I/E port and therefore is no longer available for holding cartridges, is no longer displayed. Customers are recommended to use the I/E port to import or export cartridges (see section "Import and Export of Cartridges; the I/E Port"). Page 16 of 18
4.2.5 Device Cleaning It is not necessary to clean LTO drives in regular intervals because a cleaning tape is requested by the device, as and when required. The TX24 has a manual and an automatic cleaning mode. Manual cleaning mode If the manual cleaning mode is set and a cleaning operation needs to be performed, the message D-1: Needs Cleaning is shown in the display of the operator panel and a cleaning tape is requested. Then a cleaning operation has to be initiated manually, e.g. by invoking the function Clean Drive in the Maintenance menu. Further details on the manual cleaning mode can be found in the TX24 operating manual in chapter Cleaning the Tape Drive. Automatic cleaning mode If the automatic cleaning mode is activated, cleaning can be performed without any messages being diplayed and without any need for manual intervention. A cleaning cartridge has to be inserted into the magazine slot reserved for this purpose. A fixed slot has to be used for the cleaning tape, subject to the following rule: If an I/E port has not been configured, slot 1 has to be used; if an I/E port has been configured, slot 2 has to be used the corresponding slot has to be configured at the operator panel as slot for the cleaning cartridge as follows: Maintenance Cleaning Options Fixed Cleaning Slot Enabled: Maintenance Cleaning Options Auto Cleaning On: Update. In BS2000/OSD a slot, which has been configured for the cleaning cartridge, is no longer displayed. Further details on the automatic cleaning mode can be found in the TX24 operating manual in chapter Setting Up Automatic Tape Drive Cleaning. Display of the cleaning option and the remaining cleaning cycles The number of cleaning cycles supported by or remaining for the cleaning tape are managed on the cleaning tape itself; after each cleaning operation this number is decremented by one. The setting of the cleaning option and the number of remaining cleaning cycles are displayed for the currently used cleaning tape by the Web interface in the same page or by navigating the menu Home -> Status -> Automatic Cleaning/Cleaning/Remaining Cleaning Cycles The number of remaing cleaning cycles will not be displayed correctly until the cleaning tape has been accessed for the first time, i.e. after it has been used for the first time. Page 17 of 18
4.2.6 Security by Password Protection Access through the operator panel as well as through the Web interface can be protected by passwords that can be selected and set independently.. The passwords can be set, for instance, by means of the Web interface in the following way: 1. For the operator panel Home-Page Configure Panel Change Front Panel Access Password 2. For the Web interface Home-Page Configure WAP Change Web Access Password If a password has been forgotten, it can be obtained. in encrypted form (the "password hint") 1. The password hint for the Web interface can be obtained by navigating the menu Home-Page Configure Hint Get Web PW Hint 2. The password hint for the operator panel can be retrieved directly at the operator panel. For details please refer to the section "Getting your password hint" on page 115 of the operating manual for the MTC library FibreCAT TX24. The encrypted passwords can be ed to the technical support of Fujitsu Siemens Computers for decryption. Page 18 of 18
