Written comments can serve as the basis for future revisions. In addition, the teachers and administrators are invited to discuss elements of the guides as implemented in the classroom and to work collaboratively to develop recommendations for curriculum reforms as needed. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION During the development of this course of study, particular attention was paid to material, which might discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or creed. Every effort has been made to uphold both the letter and spirit of affirmative action mandates as applied to the content, the texts and the instruction inherent in this course. MODIFICATIONS AND ADAPTATIONS For guidelines on how to modify and adapt curricula to best meet the needs of all students, instructional staff should refer to the Curriculum Modifications and Adaptations included as an Appendix in this curriculum. Instructional staff of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) must adhere to the recommended modifications outlined in each individual plan.
4 BUS665 DESKTOP PUBLISHING Page 4 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Desktop Publishing is a course for students in Grades 9-12 which provides an introduction to the world of graphic layout, publishing and web design. Students will use Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop and Dreamweaver to design, print and publish various types of business publications including business cards, newsletters, pamphlets, logos, letterheads, flyers and print advertisements. Students will receive instruction and perform authentic publishing tasks in design, layout, formatting, use of fonts, and all of the decisions related to publishing a document. The students will apply their knowledge of use of space, color, format and design to analyze and critique web pages. They will also plan and create multiple designed web pages, using Dreamweaver. Separately we assess students to gauge progress and inform instruction. Benchmark assessments for students in grades 9 through 12 are administered in the form of a midterm and final exam for full year courses. *Special Note: Only final exams are administered at the end of quarter courses and semester courses. Basic computer skills are required as a prerequisite for this full-year course, which fulfills the state requirement for Career Education or Visual and Performing Arts. RATIONALE The course is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. 17 BUS665 DESKTOP PUBLISHING Page 17 SAMPLE AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT DESKTOP PUBLISHING You have been invited to attend an Accepted Students Day at the college of your choice. There are information sessions, tours, and social opportunities. At the opening networking session, you are expected to exchange business cards with the other accepted students. In your Desktop Publishing Course, you have learned that business cards focus on a single facet of an individual or business, conveying a lasting impression in a 3.5-inch by 2-inch space. You realize that this exchange could help you link up with future roommates and make a positive impression on others who might welcome you as a member of a student organization. To accomplish this task, you must: complete the planning worksheet. create three variations of your card. select your favorite with an explanation. critique your classmates business cards by completing Evaluating a Personal Business Card worksheet. TEACHER NOTES: This task will take 3-5 days after students have learned the basics in InDesign. Critiquing classmates cards will take another class.
18 BUS665 DESKTOP PUBLISHING Page 18 NAME: DATE: CREATE A PERSONAL BUSINESS CARD PLANNING WORKSHEET 1. Take 5 minutes to create a list, which describes the person you are. (What activities do you participate in? What special qualities do you have? What are some of your accomplishments? Any special talents? What do you do in your spare time? What are some of your personality traits?) 2. Re-read through your list above and choose one aspect of your life to focus your business card around. Now describe that particular part of your life:
19 BUS665 DESKTOP PUBLISHING Page 19 PLANNING WORKSHEET (continued) 3. Create the major components of your business card: Name of Individual: Name of Business/Organization: Job Title: Phone Number/Fax Number (if applicable): Address: Web Page Address: Logo/Graphic Image: Color Choice(s): 4. Sketch out some rough ideas of how you would want your business card to look including any graphics you may want to have. Create at least 3 variations of your personal business card. Keep in mind that your card should have a focal point. It should clearly describe your job/role/activity.
20 BUS665 DESKTOP PUBLISHING Page 20 NAME: DATE: EVALUATING A PERSONAL BUSINESS CARD 1. Whose business card are you evaluating? 2. When you first look at the card, what catches your eye? Explain. 3. From reading the card, what job/role/activity do you believe this person does? 4. Is the business card easy to read and understand? Is the information appropriate? Explain. 5. Do you like this business card? Why or why not?

Clear explanation of selected topic. Several ideas for graphics Brief attempt to list ideas for card. Few graphics Minimal notes on planning process, both about self and visuals BUSINESS CARD: GRAPHIC IMPACT Color scheme, font and graphics immediately grab one s attention Either color scheme or graphic design is effective, but not fully developed Graphics are minimal, ineffective or in a poor color scheme BUSINESS CARD: COMPLETENESS AND FOCUS All personal data included. Card directed at one activity or business Most personal data included, but not all Many details missed.
