17 CnnectPrt LTS features Mdem emulatin Mdem emulatin CnnectPrt LTS devices include a cnfiguratin prfile that allws the device t emulate a mdem. Mdem emulatin sends and receives mdem respnses t a serial device ver TCP/IP (including Ethernet) instead f Public Switched Telephne Netwrk (PSTN). The mdem emulatin prfile allws yu t maintain a current sftware applicatin but using it ver the less expensive Ethernet netwrk. In additin, yu can enable r disable telnet prcessing n the incming and utging mdememulatin cnnectins. Fr infrmatin n the mdem-emulatin cmmands that CnnectPrt LTS prducts supprt, see the CnnectPrt LTS Cmmand Reference. See Select Prt Prfile fr mre infrmatin. Ethernet bridging Yu can use Ethernet bridging t jin multiple Ethernet netwrks tgether s that the jined netwrks appear as ne Ethernet netwrk. Ethernet bridging cmbines an Ethernet interface with ne r mre physical Ethernet interfaces under the umbrella f a single bridge interface. The Ethernet bridge is a sftware switch that can cnnect multiple Ethernet interfaces (physical r virtual) n a single machine while sharing a single IP subnet. Use the script file, brmde (/etc/init.d/brmde), t enable r disable Ethernet bridging. (Ethernet bridging is supprted nly thrugh the cmmand line interface.) T enable Ethernet bridging, run the fllwing cmmand: # service brmde start The IP address f the eth0 interface becmes the cmmn IP address fr the bridging mde interface (br0). After enabling Ethernet bridging, the eth0 and eth1 addresses disappear. There is a delay f a few minutes while the system autmatically changes the physical interface frm the Ethernet 1 prt t Ethernet 2 prt. Nte Enable the eth1 (IP address #2) interface befre starting Ethernet bridging. T disable Ethernet bridging, run the fllwing cmmand: # service brmde stp T custmize Ethernet bridging ptins, mdify /etc/init.d/brmde. See the brctl Linux manpage fr details. 21 Getting started with CnnectPrt LTS Cnfiguring IP addresses Cnfiguring IP addresses The IP address mde determines hw IP addresses are assigned. There are tw mdes fr assigning IP addresses: Dynamic: Allws IP addresses t be autmatically assigned using the Dynamic Hst Cnfiguratin Prtcl (DHCP) and/r Aut Private IP Addressing (APIP r AUTO IP). Static: Requires yu t assign a static IP address using any available cnfiguratin interface. By default, CnnectPrt LTS devices are cnfigured t dynamically assign addresses using DHCP. Even if a DHCP server is available fr dynamically assigning IP addresses, static addresses may wrk better fr yur netwrk cnfiguratin. Once set, static IP addresses d nt change and ther netwrk devices can always find the device by its IP address. With dynamic settings, the DHCP server can change the IP address frequently r infrequently depending n hw yur netwrk administratr has cnfigured the netwrk. When the IP address changes, netwrk devices cnfigured t talk t the CnnectPrt LTS device can n lnger access the device. In this case, yu must lcate the Digi device using the Digi Device Discvery utility and recnfigure the ther netwrk devices that need t cmmunicate with the CnnectPrt LTS device. The fllwing table summarizes methds fr assigning an IP address. Methd Digi Device Discvery Utility LCD panel Dynamic Hst Cnfiguratin Prtcl (DHCP) Aut Private IP Addressing (APIPA) als knwn as Aut-IP Static IP Descriptin Use the Digi Device Discvery utility t search fr and display Digi device, as well as change cnfiguratin settings. See Use Digi Device Discvery utility t sign in t the web interface. Use the LCD panel n CnnectPrt LTS prducts t perfrm basic cnfiguratin tasks, including setting the IP address, as well as mnitring and diagnstics tasks. See CnnectPrt LTS LCD interface. Use DHCP frm the web interface t autmatically assign IP addresses, t deliver IP stack cnfiguratin parameters such as the subnet mask and default ruter, and t prvide ther cnfiguratin infrmatin. All CnnectPrt LTS devices have a DHCP client enabled by default. Cntact yur netwrk administratr t find ut if a DHCP server is available. See Assign an IP address using DHCP. Use APIPA t autmatically assign an IP address t the Digi device frm a reserved pl f standard Aut-IP addresses n a DHCP server. If the DHCP server is unavailable r there is n DHCP server, Aut-IP assigns the device an IP address. If DHCP is enabled r respnds after ADDP is used, bth verride the Aut-IP address previusly assigned. See Assign an IP address using Aut-IP. Manually assign a specific IP address t a device thrugh the Digi Device Discvery Utility, the web interface, LCD, r the cmmand-line interface. Once set, these settings d nt change. The IP address and subnet mask are mandatry. Additinal settings may be needed fr sme functins. Cntact yur netwrk administratr fr the required values. Digi CnnectPrt LTS User Guide 21

22 Getting started with CnnectPrt LTS Cnfiguring IP addresses Methd Access via the cnsle prt Cmmandline interface Descriptin Use the prt, labeled cnsle prt n CnnectPrt LTS device t cnfigure device settings. This prt allws fr a lgin with serial settings f 9600 baud, 8 data bits, and 1 stp bit. The standard serial prts d nt prvide a lgin by default and d nt prvide access t cnfiguratin settings. Only the cnsle prt allws access t cnfiguratin settings. Use the cmmand-line interface t cnfigure device settings. See Assign an IP address frm the cmmand-line interface. Assign an IP address using DHCP Yu can assign an IP address using Dynamic Hst Cnfiguratin Prtcl (DHCP). DHCP is an Internet prtcl fr autmating the cnfiguratin f cmputers that use IP. Yu can use DHCP t autmatically assign IP addresses and deliver IP stack cnfiguratin parameters. The fllwing prcedure assumes that yu cnfigured the Digi device as a DHCP client. The Digi devices discussed in this dcument are cnfigured as a DHCP client by default. T cnfigure an IP address using DHCP: 1. Verify the Digi device is nt pwered n. 2. If desired, set up a permanent entry fr the Digi device n a DHCP server. While this is nt necessary t btain an IP address via DHCP, setting up a permanent entry saves the IP address after the device is rebted. 3. Cnnect the Digi device t the netwrk and pwer it n. DHCP assigns the IP address cnfigured in step 2 autmatically. Assign an IP address using Aut-IP The standard Autmatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA r Aut-IP) prtcl autmatically assigns the IP address frm a grup f reserved IP addresses t the device n which Aut-IP is installed. Use Digi Device Discvery r ADDP t find the Digi device and assign it a new IP address that is cmpatible with yur netwrk. When yu plug in the device, Aut-IP autmatically assigns the IP address. Aut-IP addresses are typically in the x.x address range. See Use Digi Device Discvery utility t sign in t the web interface fr instructins n using Digi Device Discvery. Assign an IP address frm the cmmand-line interface Use the set netwrk cmmand t cnfigure an IP address frm the cmmand line. The set netwrk cmmand includes the fllwing parameters: index=(1-4): The Ethernet interface index number. ip_v4=device ip: The IP address fr the device. gateway_v4=gateway: The netwrk gateway IP v4 address. garp=secnds: The frequency f Gratuitus ARP (GARP) annuncements, in secnds, which are a bradcast annuncement t the netwrk f a device s MAC address and the IP address. submask_v4=device submask: The device subnet mask fr the IP v4 address. mde_v4=(nne static dhcp): The cnfiguratin mde f the IP v4 address.
