7 2 Abut EView/400i This chapter describes EView/400i Management Pack fr Systems Center Operatins Manager (EView/400i). It als prvides a brief verview f its benefits, architecture, data flw, and installatin requirements. What is EView/400i? EView/400i Management integrates the iseries (AS/400) system platfrm int Micrsft s Systems Center Operatins Manager (SCOM). With the additin f EView/400i, SCOM prvides yu with end-t-end management f yur IT envirnment, frm PCs t iseries cmputers. What EView/400i Des The EView/400i Management Pack mnitrs the iseries system envirnment via a prxy server t capture system perfrmance statistics, system messages, and applicatin messages which crrelate t imprtant events and critical situatins. This infrmatin is then sent t the SCOM Management Server fr prcessing and actin by the Management Pack rules and mnitrs. T avid prblems during installatin, verify that the target site has met these requirements. Hardware Requirements Prxy Server: EView/400i requires a prxy server with apprpriate Ethernet hardware t cmmunicate t the SCOM server (MS r gateway) and the iseries agent(s). Nte: (EView/400i must nt be installed n the SCOM management server.) All ther hardware requirements are the same as the requirements fr a prxy server. iseries Managed Nde: EView/400i requires the apprpriate Ethernet hardware n the iseries t allw fr TCP/IP cmmunicatin with the prxy server. In additin, make sure that the SCOM server, prxy server, and iseries managed ndes meet the disk space requirements described in Table 2-1. 10 Machine iseries Managed Nde Disk Space 20 MB Sftware Requirements On the Systems Center Operatins Manager server: Installatin f EView/400i requires the pre-existence f ne f the fllwing: Micrsft System Center Operatins Manager 2012, 2012 SP1 and 2012 R2 On the Prxy Server EView/400i can be installed n Micrsft Windws Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1, Windws Server 2012 SP1, and Windws Server 2012 R2. The prxy server must have the SCOM agent running t cmmunicate t the SCOM server. EView/400i tls require a Perl language envirnment that has the net::ftp functin available. The recmmended Perl distributin is ActivePerl versin 5.6 r higher, available frm Add.NET Framewrk 3.5 feature This feature requires fr EView/400i installer t wrk prperly On the iseries Managed Nde: EView/400i requires i5/os (OS/400) V5R3 r higher n the iseries managed ndes. EView/400i requires the TCP/IP netwrk prtcl stack t be active. 10

11 3 Abut the EView/400i Agent This chapter describes the EView/400i agent cmpnents which run n the iseries system. What the EView/400i Agent Des The EView/400i agent runs as a subsystem that mnitrs yur iseries envirnment. The agent captures all iseries system and applicatin generated messages. These messages are then filtered based n values yu have cnfigured and then distributed t the SCOM prxy server. The agent als cllects peridic system statistics fr prcessing n the SCOM server. Prcessing iseries Messages The EView/400i agent prcesses all messages that are generated by the perating system as well as any messages generated by system and sftware applicatins. Messages are filtered based primarily n message IDs cnfigured by the system administratr. Any iseries message queue can be mnitred t capture specific and/r general messages. The administratr can chse between tw methds f cllecting messages frm a queue, either by adding a lck t the queue (*BREAK mde) r by peridically plling the queue (allwing ther applicatins t hld the lck n the queue, if needed). The EView/400i agent packages the cllected messages int a defined data structure, then frwards them t the SCOM server fr prcessing. Cmpnents f the EView/400i Agent The iseries cmpnent f EView/400i is made up f multiple jbs which all run in an EView-defined subsystem. 11

12 Abut the EView/400i Subsystem The EView/400i subsystem is started using a Cntrl Language (CL) cmmand. Once the subsystem s jbs are active, the agent filters and rutes messages frm the iseries message queues, cllects statistics, prcesses cmmands, and executes API calls frm the prxy server. Abut EView/400i Jbs The EView/400i agent jbs cllectively prvide all the necessary cmmunicatins and system interfaces. Each f the prcedures is dedicated t a particular interface functin and cmmunicates with ther jbs and message queues. EVTCTLCPROC Prcedure 1. Establishes a TCP/IP cnnectin t the prxy server. 2. Establishes a TCP/IP cnnectin with the Message Prcedure EVSTCPPROC. 3. Frwards prcessed results t the prxy server. EVACMDPROC Prcedure 1. Establishes a scket cnnectin fr the cmmand prt. 2. Begins a heartbeat mnitring prcess that verifies the cnnectin between the prxy server and the agent. 3. Receives iseries cmmands and API instructins frm the SCOM server. 4. Distinguishes between cmmands and API instructins, then frwards t respective pre-defined data queue fr prcessing. EVSTCPPROC Prcedure 1. Allws a TCP/IP cnnectin frm the EView/400i Cntrl Prcedure EVTCTLPROC. 2. Receives prcessed iseries messages, cmmands, and API instructins frm a central data queue. 3. Frwards the prcessed infrmatin t the EView/400i Cntrl Prcedure. EVCCTLPROC Prcedure 1. Receives the API requests frm a pre-defined data queue. 2. Determines the prper frmat t use in rder t carry ut the API instructin. 3. Makes the apprpriate OS/400 API call. 4. Sends API instructin results t a pre-defined data queue t be sent back t the SCOM server. 12

13 EVMSGQMON Prcedure 1. Determines message queues t be mnitred frm the EVMSGQCFG file with the SCAN ptin. 2. Checks cnfigured messages queues fr new messages. 3. Selects messages based n filtering and message queue cnfiguratin ptins and frwards messages t a pre-defined data queue. EVSMSGPROC Prcedure 1. Receives messages frm message queue(s) yu wish t capture messages frm. 2. Prcesses messages thrugh the message filtering prcess. 3. Frwards all iseries messages that match the filter t pre-defined data queue. EVSHSTPROC Prcedure If the EView/400i agent is cnfigured t mnitr the QHST lg, this jb: 1. Reads the QHST messages. 2. Messages are sent thrugh the filtering prcess. 3. Frwards all matched messages t a pre-defined data queue. EVPERFPROC Prcedure 1. Gathers system and jb perfrmance data. 2. Frwards perfrmance data n a specified interval t a pre-defined data queue. EVAUDJRNL Exit 1. Establishes an exit prgram that mnitrs incming entries t the QAUDJRN audit jurnal. 2. Frmats desired auditing entries int readable messages t be passed t the SCOM server. EVSCMDPROC Prcedure 1. Receives cmmands frm the pre-defined data queue. 2. Sends cmmands thrugh the cmmand prcessr. 3. Frwards the cmmand respnses t a pre-defined data queue. 13

14 4 Abut the EView/400i sftware cmpnents This chapter describes sftware cmpnents and prcess management prvided by EView/400i. Abut EView/400i sftware cmpnents Figure 4-1 shws the EView/400i sftware cmpnents running alngside the prxy server, SCOM Management Server, and the data flw t the iseries agent. 15 Nde Prcesses Fr each iseries nde that is mnitred by EView/400i, tw services are started n the prxy server: Master Message Server The Master Message Server (MMS) is the primary service fr EView/400i n the prxy server. All incming EView/400i events cme t the MMS and frwarded int the prxy server s event lg, where they are cllected by the SCOM agent. Cmmand Server The Cmmand Server (CS) frwards actin requests t an iseries system fr executin. Additinal Server Cmpnents Abut the Web Cnfiguratin Pages EView/400i prvides a brwser-based cnfiguratin applicatin t be run frm the prxy server t add, delete, cnfigure, start, stp, r check the status f the EView/400i prcesses needed fr each f the iseries ndes. The applicatin als prvides the ability t mdify the desired filters that are used n the iseries agent, such as which message queues t mnitr and which messages t capture frm thse queues. Figure 4-2 shws the cnfiguratin applicatin as it defines which iseries message queues are t be mnitred. 15

17 5 EView/400i Integratin with SCOM This chapter describes the appearance and functins f the EView/400i Management Pack when used with System Center Operatins Manager (SCOM). The EView/400i cmpnent is integrated int the SCOM Mnitring, Authring, and Reprting pane. 17

18 EView/400i in the Mnitring Pane EView/400i alerts fr iseries agents appear in the Mnitring Pane with the same lk and feel as alerts frm any ther managed system. Figure 5-1 shws a list f alerts that have been received frm iseries agents. Figure 5-1: EView/400i in SCOM Mnitring Pane 18

19 Figure 5-2 shws a SCOM diagram used t pinpint alerts amng all f the mnitred iseries agents. Inquiry messages frm the iseries QSYSOPR message queue can be answered frm the SCOM peratr s cnsle by selecting an Actin which pens a brwser windw t enter the respnse. 19

20 EView/400i in the Authring Pane The EView/400i Management Pack default installatin cntains ver 200 pre-defined rules t generate alerts fr varius imprtant iseries messages and perfrmance threshlds. Figure 5-3 shws sme f the predefined EView/400i Management Pack rules. Figure 5-3: EView/400i Management Pack Authring As with ther SCOM alerts, EView/400i default rules can be verridden and mdified t the needs f a site, and tasks can be created t respnd t different alerts in different ways. 20
