5 Introduction This chapter describes the SPECTRUM Management Module for the AT & T StarLAN10 SmartHUB (herein referred to as the SmartHUB). AT & T StarLAN10 SmartHUB Management Module The SmartHUB Management Module provides all the information necessary to manage the SmartHUB using SPECTRUM. The SmartHUB Management Module includes a software emulation of the actual device attributes and functionality. The SmartHUB is a single-slot, intelligent 10BASE-T Ethernet standards-based wiring hub which supports unshielded twisted pair (UTP), shielded twisted pair (STP) and fiber-optic cabling. The hub provides advanced network control and enhanced network security through the use of eavesdropping prevention and intrusion detection. Unauthorized protocol analyzers cannot eavesdrop; only assigned users access the network. The SmartHUB is designed to operate in a building or campus structured cabling environment. The SPECTRUM SmartHUB Management Module manages SmartHUB devices using the SNMP network management agent and the Management Information Bases (MIBs), included with the management module. SmartHUB Model Types The SmartHUB Management Module supports one SPECTRUM device model type: the Hub_ATT_SMART. The model type name for the hub appears on the text label at the bottom of the SmartHUB icon located in any SPECTRUM view. The SmartHUB management module also supports three major application model types, described below. SPECTRUM management of a SmartHUB is based on common and device-specific applications. Two common applications (listed below with the associated SmartHUB firmware versions) are discussed in the MIB II Applications Reference. Device Management Page 5 AT&T StarLAN 10 SmartHub

Logical Module Icon The Frame Breakdown View is similar to the Module Frame View described earlier, but the pie chart and fields apply to the selected port only, not to the complete hub. Frames Rcv The total number of frames of legal length received on this port that have not been corrupted in transmission. This number includes both frames received OK and those with an Out of range length field. It does not include frames received with Frame Too Long or Alignment errors or frames lost due to internal MAC sublayer errors, runts or short events. These frames can be encoded and decoded by commonly available MACs and provide a measure of the network bandwidth. The approximate rollover time for this counter is 81 hours. Frames Tx The number of authorized frames transmitted out of the port is displayed. Additional information on authorized frames is listed below: Device Management Page 11 AT&T StarLAN 10 SmartHub

12 Device View The port authorized type is SingleAddress and the destination address equals the port authorized MAC address. (See the Address Tracking View.) The port authorized type is Multiple or Hub. If the port type is None, no frames are counted. The approximate rollover time for this counter is 73 hours. Octets Rcv A total number of octets received on the port. Both data and padding octets in the frames received successfully are counted. The approximate rollover time for this counter is 58 minutes. Octets Tx The number of octets transmitted from the hub on this port is displayed. Both data and padding octets are counted. The approximate rollover time for this counter is 58 minutes. Error Energy The total length (in bytes) of all error energy is displayed. This value is used to calculate network utilization. Double-clicking on any entry displays the Port Performance View for the selected port. This view contains four graphs displaying the Frames Rcv, Frames Tx, Octets Rcv and Octets Tx against time. There are also two buttons which Logical Module Icon accesses the Error Breakdown and Frame Breakdown pie charts. 13 Device View Late Coll The number of times that a late collision was detected on this port is displayed. These are collisions later than 512 times into the transmitted packet. A late collision is counted twice, both as a Collision and as a Late Collision. Short Events The number of fragments received on this port is displayed. Fragments are less than 96 -n bits long (or 32-n bits for older controllers) and indicate an external noise hit; that is, a problem on the network. FrameTooLarge The number of frames received through this port that were greater than 1518 octets long is displayed. Large Frag The number of fragments received by this port is displayed. Large fragments are any frames greater or equal to 96 bits, but less than 512 bits (which includes runt frame). The fragment count also includes any other length frames in which the start frame delimiter was not present. FIFO Errors The number of packets received by this port with the transmission frequency (data rate) detected to Logical Module Icon be out of spec. The exact degree of error is unspecified and vendor specific. Collisions The number of times the transmit collision state was entered, irrespective of how many ports are involved. This count is displayed in the entry for Port 1 only. Receive collisions are not counted. Auto Partitions The number of times that the repeater automatically partitioned this port is displayed. Runts The number of collision fragment, longer than a Short Event but shorter than a legal packet, detected on this port is displayed. Runts do not indicate a problem on the network. Manchester Violations The number of Manchester Code violations is displayed. Manchester encoding is a self-clocking signalling type. This type of encoding guarantees at least one transition in voltage for every bit sent. Module Error View The Module Error View is accessed by clicking on the Error Information button in the Module Performance View. This view is also accessed by opening the Port Performance View from zone d of Device Management Page 13 AT&T StarLAN 10 SmartHub

26 Application Views This section describes the SmartHUB Management Module Application View. SmartHUB Applications SPECTRUM management of a SmartHUB device is based on both common and device-specific applications. The common application depends on the device s firmware version. SmartHUB with 9.x firmware support the MIB-1 application (SNMP1_Agent) while a SmartHUB with 10.x firmware supports the MIB-II application (SNMP2_Agent). These applications and their sub-applications are described in the MIB II Applications Reference. The device-specific application supported by both the 9.x and 10.x firmware is the AT&T Chassis Application (ATT_ChassisApp). The views and other information associated with this application are described in the remainder of this chapter. Accessing the Application View The Application View can be accessed by either of the following methods. Double-click on the Application View label of the SmartHUB device icon. This value is recorded whenever the hub enters the START state as defined in the repeater standard. Reset Hub Setting this field to Reset initializes the relay, port counters, and flags in a repeater. This auto partition function resets only the MPR chip. Note: Note: The value of non-resettable counters can change as a result of resetting, and packets can be lost. This action does not reset the hub management counters, nor does it affect the port control parameters. However, packets can be lost and the Hub Reset Time Stamp is zeroed. Reset Hub System Setting this field to Reset initializes all resettable management counters and also initializes the hub. All hub parameters are reset to the default Self Test Capability View parameters. The Reset Hub System default is NoReset. Execute Self Test 1 Setting this field to PerformTest initiates the nondisruptive self test function. The test does not: Change the state of the hub nor management information Inject packets onto any segments Prevent the relay of any packets. The results are shown in the Hub Health Data field, and a hub health trap is sent with the Health State and Health Data included. Execute Self Test 2 Setting this field to PerformTest initiates the disruptive self test function. The test: Resets the state of the hub without affecting management information Does not inject packets onto any segments May prevent the relay of packets. The results are shown in the Hub Health Data field, and a hub health trap is sent with the Health State and Health Data included. Hub Health State This field indicates the state of the hub. If a failure exists, the Hub Health Data provides more specific failure information. Device Management Page 28 AT&T StarLAN 10 SmartHub

29 Application Views Hub Health Data An octet block containing information relevant to the operational state of the hub. The encoding of this data block is vendor-dependent. The contents of each byte are explained in the view. Security Configuration View The Security Configuration view is accessed by highlighting the Hub_ATT_SMART icon in any view or the ATT_ChassisApp icon in the Application View and selecting the Security option from the Icon Subviews menu. The fields are described below. Note: SETs can only be changed via the RS232 port. Eavesdropping This field enables or disables the jamming of frames to non-destination ports on a hub basis. If Other appears, the function does not apply. Intrusion Enables or disables filtering on a hub basis. Self Test Capability View Intrusion Alarm Enables or disables alarming; the generation of intrusion violation traps on a hub basis, for the intrusion protection security feature. Inband Sets State If Enabled, the hub permits SNMP SETs to be received over the network. Password This field is used to set a new community string (password) for which the SmartHUB allows SETs. The password is sent in SET packets in the Community Name field in the packet s header (that is, it is not sent as an object). Bad Passwords The number of times a SET was received over the network. This could also occur if the hub s COM port displays a bad password. Setting Admin MAC Addr The source MAC address of the last SNMP SET packet processed by the hub. Setting Admin IP Addr The source IP address of the last SNMP SET packet processed by the hub. Port Security Clicking on the Port Security button displays the Port Security View, described below. Device Management Page 29 AT&T StarLAN 10 SmartHub

The Port Security Table displays the following information: Port The index number of the port. Intrusion Address If an intruder has been detected on this port, this field shows the source address of the intruder. A value of all 0s indicates that no intrusion is detected. Time Stamp The SystemUpTime when the last intrusion was detected on this port. No. Intrusions The number of times an intrusion was detected on this port. Download View The Download View is accessed by highlighting the Hub_ATT_SMART icon in any view or the ATT_ChassisApp icon in the Application View and then selecting the Download option from the Icon Subviews menu. The Download View contains the information described below. Self Test Capability View Download Image File The full or relative path of the file to be downloaded from the TFTP server the SmartHUB requests to be downloaded. The syntax depends on the operating system of the TFTP host; however, forward slashes, backward slashes, MS- DOS drive indicators signs are allowed. Download IP Address The SmartHUB sends the download request to this IP address. A zero value or string of zeros indicates that the request has not been sent. Download MAC Address This updatable field shows the MAC address of the non-udp/ip download server. If the hub has no administered IP address, or the IP address of the download server has not been administered, this address is used to download the image file using TFTP over Ethernet. Download Execute Setting this field to PerformDownload causes the hub to initiate a download request to the Download server. The default is NoDownLoad.
