13 CHAPTER 1 Overview of Istallig WebLogic Server 5.1 This maual cotais istructios o istallig, settig up, ad startig WebLogic Server ad the WebLogic jdriver for Oracle type-2 JDBC driver. Users of previous versios of WebLogic Server should take ote of the followig: Widows NT oly: WebLogic Server is shipped with a Java Rutime Eviromet (JRE) that cotais the Java classes for the Java Developmet Kit (JDK), versio 1.2 (also called Java 2). Previous versios of WebLogic Server were shipped with both a 1.2 ad JRE, selectable from the Widows Start meu or with the wlcofig program. These JRE selectio methods are o loger available. You ca ru WebLogic Server with either versio of the JDK, but some WebLogic Server features (such as JDBC 2.0) require the use of a versio 1.2 JDK. Widows NT oly: The JRE metioed above does ot iclude classes that are required for use with certai tools such as the EJB compiler (ejbc). 14 1 Overview of Istallig WebLogic Server 5.1 Istallig usig the IstallShield distributio (Widows NT) o page 13 for more iformatio. Oracle users oly: The WebLogic jdriver for Oracle (formerly called jdbckoa/oracle) is ow available i several versios. The oe you uses depeds o your Oracle cliet istallatio, the versio of the Oracle API you will use to coect to the Oracle server, ad your platform. You must place the appropriate file i your system s path or shared library path for this driver to fuctio. Ulike previous releases of WebLogic Server, which had oly oe such file that was always preset i the default path, you ow must specify this path settig explicitly. For details ad istructios o settig these optios, see Settig your path ad cliet libraries o page 54. WebLogic RMI over IIOP. If you are usig WebLogic RMI over IIOP, you must use JDK 1.3. There are some importat restrictios regardig the use of JDK 1.3. Software Requiremets The software requiremets vary amog platforms ad operatig systems ad are frequetly updated by BEA. Upgradig from a earlier release of WebLogic Server Importat otes Versio 5.1 of WebLogic Server requires a differet classpath ad commad lie to start WebLogic Server tha was required i earlier releases. These chages are discussed i detail i this documet. You will ot be able to use ay scripts or shortcuts you may have used to start previous versios of WebLogic Server with this release. 16 1 Overview of Istallig WebLogic Server 5.1 If you are usig either the WebLogic jdriver for Iformix4 (formerly called jdbckoa/iformix4) or jdriver for Microsoft SQL Server (formerly called jdbckoa/mssqlserver4) type 4 JDBC drivers, you must also upgrade them for use with WebLogic Server 5.1. You ca obtai these drivers from the same locatio where you obtaied WebLogic Server. Steps to take before istallatio 1. Save your curret licese files. Ope the directory where your registered istallatio is located ad copy your WebLogicLicese.xml or WebLogicLicese.class file ito a safe place. You will be istructed where to place your licese file later i these istructios. 2. Save your weblogic.properties ad weblogic.policy files to a safe locatio. 3. Save ay user-writte code or compiled classes to a safe locatio. 4. To safeguard your applicatios ad eviromet, BEA recommeds that you copy your etire WebLogic distributio to a safe locatio or otherwise back up your previous istallatio. Do ot istall a ew versio of WebLogic Server o top of a previous versio Steps to take after istallatio 1. Re-ru the WebLogic utility ejbc o your Eterprise Java Beas. 2. 19 CHAPTER 2 Istallig usig the IstallShield distributio (Widows NT) The IstallShield distributio makes it easy to istall WebLogic Server o your Widows NT computer. The IstallShield program upacks the distributio, sets up your WebLogic properties ad security policy files, istalls a Java rutime eviromet (JRE), ad sets up shortcuts to ru WebLogic Server. You ca also istall WebLogic Server from a zip archive. See Istallig from a zip archive (UNIX, Widows NT) o page 17 for more iformatio. However, usig the zip archive does ot automatically set up properties, shortcuts, ad Widows Registry settigs. BEA recommeds that Widows NT users use the IstallShield distributio. If you are upgradig from a previous release of WebLogic Server, you ca either uistall the previous versio or istall the ew versio i a differet directory. If you are re-istallig the same versio of WebLogic Server, uistall it first. Istallig ad Startig WebLogic Server 13

20 2 Istallig usig the IstallShield distributio (Widows NT) Uistallig a previous release To uistall a previous release: 1. Click Start >Settigs >Cotrol Pael 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 3. Select WebLogic versio x.x.x (Where x.x.x is the WebLogic Server versio umber.) 4. Click Add/Remove. Ruig the IstallShield program 1. Dowload the WebLogic IstallShield distributio, or locate the weblogic510.exe file o your CD. 2. Double click the weblogic510.exe file. The IstallShield program begis to istall WebLogic Server. 3. Follow the istructios o the scree. The IstallShield program prompts you for the followig additioal iformatio: l l l The ame of the directory where you wat to istall WebLogic Server. If you are upgradig from a previous release, istall WebLogic Server ito a ew directory. BEA recommeds that you istall WebLogic Server i a top-level directory. For example, c:\weblogic. A System Password. Select a password that you will use to access admiistrative fuctios of the WebLogic Server. If you forget the password, you ca retrieve it by lookig i the weblogic.properties file, uder the property weblogic.password.system. Evaluatio password. If you are istallig WebLogic Server from a evaluatio CD, go to the URL listed o the CD packagig ad complete the registratio process. After you submit your olie registratio, you will 14 Istallig ad Startig WebLogic Server

21 Next steps receive a password by . Eter this password whe prompted by the IstallShield. Note: If you have purchased the CD versio of WebLogic Server, you will ot eed this password. You will receive a set of licese keys by . To use these keys, follow the istructios uder Updatig a licese o page 34 before startig WebLogic Server. 4. Specify JAVA_HOME. WebLogic Server ships with a Java Rutime Eviromet (JRE). This JRE does ot iclude classes that are required for use with certai tools such as the EJB compiler (ejbc). To use such tools you must istall ad cofigure a JDK for use with Weblogic Server. If you will be startig WebLogic Server usig the Widows wlserver ative program, from the Widows Start meu, or whe ruig WebLogic Server as a Widows NT Service, you must use the wlcofig program to specify the directory cotaiig your Java Developmet Kit (JDK). For example: wlcofig -JAVA_HOME c:\java For more iformatio, see Widows Coveiece Programs o page 37 Next steps 1. Oracle users oly. If you will be usig the supplied Oracle JDBC driver (WebLogic jdriver for Oracle, formerly called jdbckoa/oracle) you must explicitly set your PATH to iclude both the Oracle-supplied libraries ad the appropriate BEA-supplied libraries. See Istallig WebLogic jdriver for Oracle o page 49 for details. 2. Startig WebLogic Server The WebLogic Server distributio is ow istalled o your computer. 23 CHAPTER 3 Istallig from a zip archive (UNIX, Widows NT) Overview This sectio tells you how to istall WebLogic Server usig the zip archive. This zip archive is required for istallig WebLogic Server o supported UNIX systems ad may also be used for istallatio o Widows NT. Note: Whe istallig WebLogic Server o a UNIX system, do ot uzip the distributio o a Widows NT machie ad the copy that istallatio to a UNIX machie. Istallig o Widows NT usig the zip archive Istallig WebLogic Server o Widows NT usig the zip archive istead of the IstallShield meas that the followig steps will ot be performed automatically: Widows Coveiece Programs (see page 37) will ot be istalled. Start meu shortcuts will ot be set up. The weblogic.properties file will ot be modified. Istallig ad Startig WebLogic Server 17

24 3 Istallig from a zip archive (UNIX, Widows NT) The weblogic.policy file will ot be modified. You will be uable to istall WebLogic Server as a Widows NT service. BEA recommeds that you use the IstallShield versio whe istallig o Widows NT. For more iformatio, see Istallig usig the IstallShield distributio (Widows NT) o page 13. Upgradig from a previous release If you have a versio of WebLogic Server earlier tha 5.1.0, you should either remove your previous istallatio or re-ame its directory. Do ot istall the ew release o top of a older release. Istallig from the zip archive Note: If you are istallig o Widows NT, please igore the steps labeled (UNIX oly). 1. Dowload the WebLogic distributio, or locate the weblogic510.zip file o your CD (located i the root directory). 2. (UNIX oly) Create a UNIX user to istall WebLogic Server, such as weblogic (optioal). This allows you to cotrol access to the distributio ad to set permissios for your WebLogic distributio. See the documetatio for your operatig system for details. You may also wat to create a group that has permissios to access the distributio. 3. (UNIX oly) Log i with the WebLogic user you created. 4. Select a directory for the istallatio. BEA recommeds that you istall WebLogic Server i a directory where you ormally istall shared applicatios, such as /usr/local/weblogic. If you are upgradig from a previous versio of WebLogic Server, reame or delete the root directory of your old istallatio. 18 Istallig ad Startig WebLogic Server

25 Istallig from the zip archive 5. Uzip the distributio. You ca use the uzip utility to u-pack the distributio (or WiZip o Widows NT), or, if you already have a Java Developmet Kit (JDK) istalled, you ca use the Java jar utility. (The jar utility is ot icluded with the JRE.) A weblogic directory will be created i the directory where you execute the jar commad. For example, $ jar -xvf path/weblogic510.zip (where path is the path to the weblogic510.zip file) uzips the distributio ito a directory called weblogic, located beeath the curret directory. 6. Edit the weblogic.properties file, located i the top-level directory where you upacked the WebLogic Server distributio. The weblogic.properties file cotais ame-value pairs for properties that set the fuctioality of the WebLogic Server. To ru the server with a basic cofiguratio, you must edit several properties: l l l l Admiistrator s password. Edit the property weblogic.password.system, addig your ow system admiistrator s password. This user-selected password is used to access admiistrative fuctios of WebLogic Server such as the WebLogic Cosole. The default miimum legth for the password is 8 characters ad the maximum is 16 characters (this ca be chaged, see Settig WebLogic Properties at For example, weblogic.password.system=mypassword Modify paths to your istalled directory. The default weblogic.properties file uses a path of /weblogic as the default locatio for various files. If you have istalled WebLogic Server ito a differet directory, replace all the /weblogic etries with the correct directory. Modify exteral paths. The weblogic.properties file refers to several directories outside of the WebLogic Server istallatio. Examie all istaces of c:/ i the weblogic.properties file ad correct these etries as eeded. Istall a performace pack. If you are istallig WebLogic Server o Widows NT, Solaris 2.6/2.7, or AIX 4.3, you ca add a ative performace pack that uses a platform-optimized (ative) socket muxer to improve server performace. To use a performace pack, make sure the followig property is Istallig ad Startig WebLogic Server 19

26 3 Istallig from a zip archive (UNIX, Widows NT) defied i your weblogic.properties file (the default weblogic.properties file shipped with your distributio already defies this property ad sets it to true): weblogic.system.ativeio.eable=true 7. If you are usig Java 2 (JDK 1.2), modify the weblogic.policy file. This is covered i detail uder Settig up the Java security maager for Java (UNIX oly) Set the file permissios (optioal). After you upack the distributio, the permissios for all of the files will be 644 (read/write access for the user, read access for the group ad for all). For security reasos, you may wat to chage these permissios, particularly o sesitive files such as weblogic.properties, weblogic.log, ad weblogic.policy. For these sesitive files, BEA recommeds that you set the permissios to 640 (o access for all ). 9. (UNIX oly) If you will be ruig WebLogic Server as a web server listeig for requests o port 80, please see Additioal steps o UNIX at (UNIX oly) If you will be usig performace packs or WebLogic ZAC, you must set your load (or shared) library path to poit to the directory cotaiig the ative libraries for your platform. (O most UNIX systems, this is called the LD_LIBRARY_PATH, o HP-UX, it is called SHLIB_PATH, ad o IBM AIX it is called LIBPATH. See your operatig system documetatio for istructios o settig this variable.) These libraries are located i the directory show i the table below. For more iformatio o the latest JDKs supported for ruig WebLogic Server, check the WebLogic Platform support page at If you istalled WebLogic Server o Widows NT usig IstallShield, a Java Rutime Eviromet (JRE) is automatically istalled ad cofigured to ru WebLogic Server. A JRE provides oly a rutime eviromet, ad does ot iclude developmet tools such as compilers ad debuggers. May Java applicatios developed for deploymet with WebLogic Server require that a compiler be available while a applicatio is ruig. For these applicatios, you will eed to istall a JDK. Native vs. Gree Threads Most JDKs iclude a optio to ru the JVM usig ative or gree threads. Always ru WebLogic Server usig ative threads. Some JVMs, such as the JDK for Solaris default to gree threads. Usually passig the -ative optio o the java commad lie will force the JVM to use ative threads. However, this implemetatio is ot cosistet across JDKs. Cosult the documetatio for you JDK to make sure that you correctly specify the use of ative threads. Hot Spot Hot Spot is a ehacemet to the stadard JVM that uses a Just-i-time compiler ad other features desiged to improve performace. If you wat to use a Hot Spot JVM, check the WebLogic Server platforms page to make sure that its use is supported for your platform. Uder most JDKs you ca specify that the Hot Spot JVM ot be used by addig the -classic optio to the java commad lie. This ca be useful if you require thread dumps while debuggig a applicatio. Settig the system PATH Set your system PATH to iclude the java\bi directory of your JDK ad the weblogic\bi directory. If you are usig the type-2 WebLogic jdriver for Oracle, you must also iclude the path to both the Oracle-supplied ad the BEA-supplied cliet libraries for your driver. See Istallig WebLogic jdriver for Oracle (o page 49) for more iformatio. O Widows NT, you would use the followig commad to set your path i a commad widow: $set path=c:\java\bi;c:\weblogic\bi;%path% Where java is the directory cotaiig your JDK ad weblogic is the directory cotaiig your WebLogic Server istallatio. Settig the classpath I the Java eviromet, the Java virtual machie uses the classpath to locate the classes it eeds to ru a applicatio. Settig your classpath correctly is essetial for ruig WebLogic Server or ay Java applicatio. WebLogic Server uses a process called dyamic class loadig ad therefore requires a combiatio of two settigs for classpath: The commad lie -classpath optio, which sets the Java system classpath. These are the classes WebLogic Server requires to start. A system property called weblogic.class.path, which sets the WebLogic classpath ad specifies classes used while ruig WebLogic Server. 26 Istallig ad Startig WebLogic Server

33 Settig the eviromet Although it is commo practice for Java users to set the Java system classpath with the CLASSPATH eviromet variable, BEA recommeds, whe startig WebLogic Server, that you set your Java system classpath from the commad lie, usig the -classpath optio of the java commad, which overrides ay eviromet CLASSPATH settig. Usig this procedure esures that oly the correct classes are loaded ad that coflictig classes are ot loaded. Note: If you are usig Microsoft SDK for Java (Jview) as your JDK, you must set the Java system classpath with the eviromet variable CLASSPATH. Usig the /cp commad lie optio to specify the Java system classpath will ot allow WebLogic Server to start. For more iformatio, see Microsoft SDK for Java (JView) o page 29. These istructios apply oly to ruig WebLogic Server. Upgradig from a previous release If you are upgradig from ay earlier release of WebLogic Server, you should pay special attetio to classpath issues because the requiremets have chaged. WebLogic Server ow uses a ew class loader to load classes. The class loader requires that you specify the classpath differetly ad also requires you to update ay scripts or shortcuts you use to ru WebLogic Server. If you have Eterprise Java Beas compiled uder a earlier release, you must perform several steps, icludig re-compilig, to update them for use with this release. Occasioally, you may ecouter classes that caot be placed i the WebLogic classpath. If you receive ay uexplaied Class ot foud errors, the problem may be that the class was writte i such a way that it caot be loaded with the class loader used by WebLogic Server. Such a class should be icluded i the Java system classpath as a additioal argumet to the -classpath optio. Whe this property is set, the locatio of loaded classes will be displayed as WebLogic Server starts up. Microsoft SDK for Java (JView) The commad lie sytax for jview is differet from the java commad. To ru WebLogic Server uder jview, make the followig substitutios: jview for java /d: for the -D optio (to set properties) Note that jview does ot support the class loader used by WebLogic Server. A WebLogic Server started uder jview will ot be able to use the class loader to load classes from the WebLogic classpath (the classes ormally specified with the weblogic.class.path property). Sice the class loader is ot used, you will ot be able to use the Hot Deploy feature for deployig EJBs or servlets i a ruig WebLogic Server without havig to restart the server. Specify the followig special property whe startig the server uder jview. This property prevets WebLogic Server from usig the weblogic.class.path property to load classes: /d:weblogic.system.disableweblogicclasspath=true To ru WebLogic Server uder jview, do ot specify the weblogic.class.path property o the commad lie. Do ot use the weblogic.class.path property o the commad lie. Istead, specify all of the classes required to start WebLogic Server ad ru your applicatios usig the eviromet variable CLASSPATH. Cloudscape DBMS WebLogic Server comes with a trial versio of a all-java database maagemet system (DBMS) called Cloudscape. The WebLogic Tour ad some of the example code shipped with WebLogic Server use this DBMS. You ca also use it for testig if you do ot have aother DBMS available. If you will be usig Cloudscape, you must iclude it i your Java system classpath. Normally third-party classes such as these should be icluded i the WebLogic classpath (with the weblogic.class.path property). However, due to some differeces i the Cloudscape product, this jar file should be icluded i the Java system classpath (usig the -classpath optio). For additioal iformatio, see Usig the Cloudscape database with WebLogic at Settig up the Java security maager for Java 2 Whe you ru WebLogic Server uder Java 2 (JDK 1.2.x), the server uses a Java Security Maager to cotrol access to system resources. Java Security Maager requires a security policy file to set up the permissios. The WebLogic distributio cotais a security policy file (called weblogic.policy) that cotais a set of default permissios that allows you to start WebLogic Server without creatig your ow security policy. Modifyig the weblogic.policy file for geeral use Widows NT IstallShield users may skip the remaider of this sectio. IstallShield modifies the weblogic.policy file automatically. You do ot eed to specify ay argumets to this property. java.security.policy tells the JVM the locatio of the security policy file to use. The argumet is the fully qualified file ame of the security policy file, i this case, weblogic.policy. For example, $ java... -Djava.security.maager -Djava.security.policy==c:/weblogic/weblogic.policy Be sure to use == istead of = whe specifyig java.security.policy, so that oly the weblogic.policy file is used by Java security maager. The == causes the weblogic.policy file to override ay default security policy. A sigle equal sig causes the weblogic.policy file to be appeded to a existig security policy. For more iformatio o settig up a security policy, see the article Default Policy Implemetatio ad Policy File Sytax o the JavaSoft website at Modifyig the weblogic.policy file for third party or user-writte classes The best locatio for your server-side user code is the weblogic/myserver/serverclasses directory. If you have third party or user-writte classes that are ot i that directory, also: 1. Copy the etire block of code i the weblogic.policy file from grat codebase... to the closig bracket ad semicolo. 2. This procedure creates a security policy for your code that cotais exactly the same permissios as those for the WebLogic Server. You should examie these permissios closely to make sure that this is the security policy you wat to use for those directories. For more iformatio o settig up a security policy, see the article Default Policy Implemetatio ad Policy File Sytax o the JavaSoft website at Cautio: Usig JavaSoft JDK versio o UNIX systems applies security policy improperly if your WebLogic software is ot istalled i the root directory of the file system or disk drive. Policy is oly applied correctly if the path i a grat codebase URL has just oe compoet. For example, if you istall WebLogic Server i c:\test\weblogic, (or eve /home/weblogic o Solaris), you will see AccessCotrolExceptios eve though you use the correct URL i your policy file. If you are evaluatig WebLogic Server s clusterig feature, you may receive a set of evaluatio keys for clusterig. To add ew licese keys to your existig licese file: 1. Ope the message cotaiig the keys you received by whe you purchased a licese from BEA Systems, Ic. 2. Ope the WebLogicLicese.xml file i a text editor. (Make sure you do t edit this file i Microsoft Word, or ay other word-processig program that will save the file as a biary.) 3. Copy the keys from the ad paste them at the top of the XML file, after the <WEBLOGIC-LICENSES> tag. Although o oe else will be able to use your licese keys, you should probably save this iformatio i a place protected from either malicious or iocet tamperig by others. Whe you upgrade WebLogic Server, keep your origial WebLogicLicese.xml ad add ew keys to it for ay ew services you purchase. Upgradig liceses from a previous release Prior to release 4.0 of WebLogic Server, liceses were distributed i a compiled Java.class format. WebLogic liceses are ow distributed i a XML format. If you are upgradig from a earlier release of WebLogic Server, please copy your licese files, called either WeblogicLicese.XML or WebLogicLicese.class to your weblogic/licese directory. (Where weblogic is the directory cotaiig your WebLogic Server istallatio.) If you purchase more tha oe product from WebLogic, you will have more tha oe etry i your licese file. If you have purchased liceses for versios previous to 4.0, you may also have a.class format licese file. All of your licese files ca be used together. Whe the WebLogic Server starts up, it looks for multiple licese files i both formats i the followig order: 1..class files i the weblogic/licese directory 2..XML files i the directory specified with the weblogic.system.home property 3..XML files i the WebLogic Server classpath. If WebLogic Server ecouters a expired licese, it will ot cotiue to look for additioal liceses. For this reaso you should remove expired licese keys from your licese files. For iformatio o editig a XML style licese, see Istallig a WebLogic Licese at If you eed to add licese keys to a older class-style licese, please see Istallig a WebLogic Licese at Startig WebLogic Server o Widows NT Start Meu If you istalled WebLogic Server o Widows with the IstallShield kit, you ca use the WebLogic Server shortcut o the Widows start meu to start the WebLogic Server. Click o: Start >Programs >WebLogic 5.1 >WebLogic Server. You ca use the wlcofig utility to select the various defaults used whe startig WebLogic Server from the Start meu. Whe istalled as a NT service, WebLogic Server will start automatically whe you boot the Widows NT computer.
