With the Itel RAID driver v istalled o a SR2500 System Director, it was possible to lose data after a uexpected system shut dow (typically the result of a power loss). After istallig the Avid Uity ISIS v2.0.6 ad updatig the Itel RAID driver to the v xx, this issue is resolved. Fixed I This Release The followig issues have bee fixed i Avid Uity ISIS v Whe performig a redistributio after a ISB removal, the redistributio would sometimes appear to be stuck processig a sigle block. The ISB message log will display the error: Full block crossig paths. This remove redistributio hag o loger occurs. 11

12 A rare coditio was reported where small I/Os over a ustable etwork produced icomplete writes ad resulted i corrupt data (most commo with 512 KB chuk sizes). This coditio ca also occur with dual coected cliets. Avid Uity ISIS v2.0.6 corrects this corruptio issue with small I/Os. The LSI driver ad registry key update for the iteral RAID cotroller corrects a data loss coditio. Itel Network Driver ad BIOS Updates Avid has qualified a Itel system BIOS upgrade o the 64-bit System Director (SR2500). This BIOS ad Itel Pro driver upgrade combiatio corrects a coditio where the etwork coectio fails durig a restart. The followig sectios describe the updates. If you fid it ecessary to reimage the System Director, you eed to updated the etwork driver agai. The BIOS is ot affected whe you reimage your System Director. 64-bit System Director BIOS Upgrade Avid is recommedig you update the BIOS o the 64-bit System Director (SR2500). This BIOS ad Itel Pro driver upgrade combiatio corrects a coditio where the etwork coectio fails durig a restart. To do that, you ca visit the Itel web site ad follow their istructios, or use the files ad istructios posted o the Avid Dowload Ceter ( The procedure o the Avid Dowload Ceter requires you to create a Itel BIOS Update Utility DVD ad use a USB flash drive to load the BIOS update package o the System Director ad File Gateway. Istructios for ruig the Itel BIOS Upgrade Utility ad istallig the BIOS are icluded with the image for the utility ad the BIOS package. Check your curret BIOS versio before upgradig the BIOS. If your BIOS is at versio 98, you have the recommeded BIOS versio for this release. Eter BIOS Setup by pressig the F2 Key durig POST ad the versio is displayed as S B i the Mai tab. Record IP Addresses o the System Director Before you update your Itel Pro etwork driver, Avid recommeds you record the curret IP address used o the System Directors. This precautio allows you to restore the IP addresses to the curret settigs if your etwork cofiguratio is accidetly lost. 12

13 New i Versio To record the curret IP addresses used by the System Director: 1. Ope a commad widow o the System Director. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > ad select Commad Prompt. 2. Type ipcofig /all > c:\ip.txt i the Commad Prompt widow. This commad saves a text file (amed ip.txt) to the root directory o the System Director. Ope this text file if eed to recofigure the IP addresses to the addresses used before performig this etwork cofiguratio update. Update Itel Driver o the System Director Use the followig istructios to upgrade the Itel Pro etwork driver o your System Director ad cofigure the dual etwork ports. System Directors always have a Itel driver istalled by default. You do ot eed to removed the older versio. Before you update your Itel Pro etwork driver, Avid recommeds you record the curret IP address used o the System Directors. This precautio allows you to restore the IP addresses to the curret settigs if your etwork cofiguratio is accidetly lost. To update the Itel etwork driver o the System Director: 1. Stop the Stadby System Director. 2. Isert the Avid Uity ISIS DVD ito the cliet DVD drive. The software istallatio widow opes after several secods. 3. Click the Exit butto to close the istallatio widow. 4. Browse to the appropriate Itel etwork driver folder o the Avid Uity ISIS DVD depedig o the Widows operatig system o your System Director. [DVD drive] \Tools_3rdParty\Drivers_ad_Firmware\Itel_Pro1000_ Double-click the executable file (Autoru.exe). 6. Click Istall Drivers ad Software. 7. Accept the default settigs to istall the driver. 8. Click Fiish. 9. Right-click My Network Places ad select Properties. 10. Right-click the right side etwork coectio ad select Properties. The Properties dialog widow opes. 11. Click Cofigure. 12. If prompted, click Yes to proceed. The Itel Pro Server Adapter Properties dialog box displays. 13

14 13. Click the Advaced tab. Chage the cofiguratio as described i oe of the followig two steps. The dialog boxes i these steps are based o the versio ad driver istallatio. 14. (Optio) If your Server Adapter Properties dialog box display looks like the followig, chage the cofiguratio as described after the scree capture. If you are usig a Remote Desktop Coectio the Advaced tab does ot appear. a. Click Flow Cotrol ad set the Value to off. b. Click Iterrupt Moderatio Rate ad set the Value to off c. Check that the Receive Descriptors ad set the Value to d. Check that the Trasmit Descriptors ad set the Value to e. Click OK Server Adapter Properties dialog box. 14

Click the Performace Optios i the Settig list. b. Click Properties. c. Click Flow Cotrol ad set the Value to off. d. Click Iterrupt Moderatio Rate ad set the Value to off e. Check that the Receive Descriptors ad set the Value to f. Check that the Trasmit Descriptors ad set the Value to g. Click OK to close the Performace Optios. h. Click OK to close the Server Adapter Properties dialog box. 16. Repeat steps 9 through 17 for the left side etwork coectio. 17. Restart the Stadby System Director. 18. Stop the Active System Director ad repeat steps 1 through 17 to update the Itel Pro driver ad cofigure the dual etwork ports o the Active System Director. 15

16 Itel RAID Cotroller Driver Update This sectio describes the process for updatig the Itel driver ad registry key for the iteral RAID cotroller o the Itel SR2500 server usig the SROMBSAS18E Itel hardware RAID cotroller. This RAID cotroller is used i the Avid Uity ISIS SR2500 System Director ad the Avid Iterplay 64-bit Media Idexer. This driver does ot apply to the other SR2500 cofiguratios usig the embedded SATA RAID ESRTII. The majority of the Itel SR2500 Avid Uity ISIS System Directors use a 64-bit operatig system. Avid did ship some Itel SR2500 System Directors with a 32-bit operatig system before the 64-bit operatig systems were released. All Avid Uity ISIS System Directors usig the Itel SR2500 server require this RAID cotroller driver update. The RAID cotroller update requires a driver update ad a registry chage. Access the update package from oe of the followig locatios. Create a ew folder o the server that you are updatig ad place the update files i it. Dowload the Itel hardware RAID cotroller SROMBSAS18E update package from ( To upgrade the SROMBSAS18E Itel driver: 1. Access the Stadby System Director ad stop the System Director service usig the ISIS Cotrol Pael. 2. Right-click o My Computer ad select Maage. The Computer Maagemet Widow opes. 3. Select Device Maager. The Device Maager opes 4. Click the plus sig (+) ext to SCSI ad RAID Cotrollers. 16

17 New i Versio Right-click o the Itel RAID Cotroller SROMBSAS18E ad select Properties. 6. Click the Driver tab i the Properties widow. 7. Click Update Driver i Driver tab. 8. I Hardware Update Wizard, do ot let Widows select the driver: a. Select No, ot at this time ad click Next. b. Select Istall from a list of specific locatio (Advaced) ad click Next. c. Select Do t search. I will choose the driver to istall ad click Next. d. Click Have Disk. e. 18 f. Click Ope, i the Locate File dialog box. g. Click OK, i the Istall From Disk dialog box. h. Click Next i the Hardware Update Wizard. 9. Oce you complete the driver istall, click No whe prompted to restart the server. 10. Close the Properties widow. 11. Apply the registry key by browsig to the RegKey_Updates folder i the package you copied to the server. t 64-bit System Director double-click the w2k3.reg file to apply the registry key chage. The followig two etries are added to the 64-bit System Director registry locatio: KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurretCotrolSet\Services\msas2k3\ Parameters\Device DriverParameters = flushrequest= 3 DriverParameter = flushrequest= 3 t 32-bit System Director double-click the wixp.reg file to apply the registry key chage. The followig two etries are added to the 32-bit System Director registry locatio: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurretCotrolSet\Services\megasas\ Parameters\Device\ DriverParameters = flushrequest= 3 DriverParameter = flushrequest= Restart the Stadby System Director. 13. After the StadBy System Director has restarted, tur off the Active System Director to failover to the updated Stadby System director. Repeat this procedure o the secod System Director. 19 New i Versio Fixed I This Release The followig issues have bee fixed i Avid Uity ISIS v Opeig a bi from Iterplay had bee slow if the bi refereced media o a ISIS workspace to which the user did ot have access. The ISIS v2.0.5 cliet software fixes this issue. Avid Uity ISIS v2.0.4 cliet software preveted the Fial Cut Pro applicatio from rederig effects whe Avid implemeted the fix for the slow respose betwee the Fider ad the Fial Cut Pro applicatio. The Avid Uity ISIS v2.0.5 cliet software fixes this issue so that Fial Cut Pro cliets ca reder effects ad fuctio ormally whe switchig betwee the Fider ad back to the Fial Cut Pro applicatio. Cliets have reported system failures whe readig ad writig files durig a Remove Redistributio where the Storage Elemet is removed from the Storage Elemet page before the redistributio of that Storage Elemet has completed. Cliets system failures o loger occur durig this operatio. Whe Avid Uity ISIS sychroized ugrouped Avid ISIS users with LDAP users ad performed a Global Refresh, the LDAP server retured a error which caused the LDAP Syc tool to automatically discoect from the LDAP server. Ugrouped users are o loger sychroized with the LDAP server ad will ot cause the LDAP Syc tool to discoect. I previous ISIS versios, it was possible for the ISB (Storage Elemets) to get ito a disk full state due to may pedig delete block requests. I ISIS v2.0.5, the ISB ow more aggressively prioritizes deletes whe free space o disk is low. Some audio was gettig dropped from the audio tracks whe writig audio to a sequece o workspaces with the Audio Puch-I tool. Audio is o loger dropped from sequeces whe usig the Audio Puch-I tool. 34 Addig a ISB to the File System If you add a ISB (displays as a available Storage Elemet) to your file system, make sure you match the chuk size of the ew Storage Elemet to the chuk size of the existig storage group. New Storage Elemets are added with a default chuk size of 512 KB. You caot mix chuk sizes withi a Storage Group. To chage the chuk size of a ISB, you must remove the ew Storage Elemet from the file system ad add the Storage Elemet agai choosig the correct chuk size. Chuk Size Support With ISB All ISBs (i500, i1000, ad i2000) support the 512 KB chuk size, although you must have v2.x switch hardware (ISS2000 ad IXS2000) to use the 512 KB chuk size. New Delete Workspace Behavior Avid Uity ISIS v2.x ow allows you to delete a workspace without first emptyig the workspace. Storage Groups Support ISBs of Differet Capacities c You ca ow add larger capacities ISBs to Storage Group with smaller capacities ISBs. The Avid LDAP/Uity Accout Sychroizer allows Avid Uity ISIS admiistrators to sychroize ISIS user accouts with existig LDAP user accouts usig Active Directory. This feature allows you to create ad modify a large umber of users ad groups withi the Avid Uity ISIS system. Previously, if a 10-Gb truk lik failed, the software did ot load balace the traffic amog the remaiig truk liks. This behavior has chaged i Avid Uity ISIS v2.x. Now if a 10-Gb truk lik fails, the software automatically load balaces the traffic amog the remaiig truk liks. c For example i a four-way 10-Gb truk if a sigle 10-Gb lik fails, the traffic is load balaced amog the remaiig three liks. This also meas that the average traffic distributio icreases from 25% with the four liks, to 33% i the three liks. The traffic automatically re-balaces the load whe a truk lik returs. It is strogly advised that etwork plaers setup the truks to hadle the additioal load if a lik or a set of liks should fail i a truk cofiguratio. Cliet Prefereces Cliet Prefereces are automatically saved o upgrades or reistalls from Avid Uity ISIS v1.4 ad later. They ca be saved maually whe you are upgradig from Avid Uity ISIS v1.3. The Avid Uity ISIS istaller DVD provides a applicatio (SaveISISPrefereces.exe) that ca be used to maually save your ISIS cliet prefereces whe you are upgradig from Avid Uity ISIS v1.3. This applicatio is located i the: DVD drive:\aviduityisiscliet folder. For iformatio about maually savig prefereces, see the Avid Uity ISIS Cliet Guide. The followig is a summary of whe it is ecessary to maually save your prefereces: Upgradig from v1.2 (32-bit or 64-bit) save maually usig 32-bit versio of provided applicatio. Avid Iterplay Uity Autheticatio Avid Iterplay Uity Autheticatio requires the Avid Uity ISIS System Director to use a virtual ame. The System Director s virtual ame must ot match the actual host ame ad must be etered i the Geeral Cofiguratio Optios dialog box eve if your Avid Uity ISIS system cofiguratio oly has oe System Director. For istructios o addig the virtual ame, search the Avid Uity ISIS Admiistratio Guide for Geeral Cofiguratio Optios. Workspace Names You must use Uicode characters i workspace ames. The followig is a list of 16 illegal characters you should ot use i workspace ames, workgroup ames, fileames, user ames, device ames, ad storage group ames: \ / [ ] % *? + : " ;, < >. You also should ot use a period (.) as either the first or last character i the ames you create, ad you should ot iclude a space i workspace ames whe i a Avid Iterplay eviromet. The System Director does ot support viewig regioal laguage characters i the Maagemet Cosole. 47

If you already have workspace ames with periods ad upgrade to Avid Uity ISIS v1.4, the origial issues cotiue to exist as outlied below: Widows Data is preserved ad itact with display issues. A fileame or directory with a period at the ed is ivalid i Widows. As a result the Avid Uity ISIS Cliet is tryig to iterpret a period at the ed of a workspace ito somethig Widows ca uderstad. This iterpretatio appears as a graphic istead of a period. Macitosh Data is preserved ad itact, but ay workspace with a ame that starts with a period is treated as a hidde directory by Mac OS X. By default such a workspace caot be accessed via the Desktop ad caot be see i the /Volumes folder i the Fider. To access the cotets of the Macitosh workspace: t Click Go > Go to Folder meu i the Fider ad type the path /Volumes/ followed by the workspace ame (for example, /Volumes/.MyWorkspace ). A widow opes showig the cotets of the workspace ad make the workspace temporarily visible as a subdirectory of /Volumes. Macitosh Dual Port Network Coectios Macitosh cliets do ot support dual port etwork coectios i the Avid Uity ISIS eviromet. Avid Uity ISIS IP Port Usage Avid Uity ISIS v1.4 ad later uses ports o a dyamic basis for Firewall access. This access is for data trasfers betwee the cliet ad ISBs, as well as icomig message traffic from the System Director or ISBs. Previous releases used the port umber rage Firmware Upgrade Durig a Redistributio Do ot perform a ISB firmware upgrade while a Redistributio is i process. Make sure all firmware upgrades are completed before ay redistributio is started. The followig evets trigger redistributio: Movig a Workspace Clickig Full Redistributio o a Workspace Addig a Storage Elemet to a Storage Group Removig a Storage Elemet from a Storage Group Chagig the state of a Workspace to mirrored or umirrored

Perform the firmware upgrade o the ISB(s) that must be upgraded. 4. Wait util the firmware upgrade is completed successfully. 5. Resume the redistributio usig the Workspace widow. Network Coectios The ISIS etwork topology uses two separate domais, with oe domai represeted by the ISSs o the left side of the ISIS egie ad the secod domai represeted by the ISSs o the right side. Avid Uity ISIS does ot support Zoe 1, 10/100 BASE-T etwork iterface coectios. 10/100 BASE-T cliets must be attached as a Zoe 2 or 3 cliet. AirSpeed devices ad TrasferMaagers must be coected as Zoe 1 or Zoe 2 cliets. Eablig the Distributed File System o Widows Vista Avid disables the Widows Vista Distributed File System (DFS) i the Avid Uity ISIS cliets. Avid Uity ISIS cliets ruig Widows Vista might have delays whe opeig files over the shared storage etwork with DFS eabled. If you eed to ru DFS o your Widows Vista cliet, use the followig procedure to eable the DFS by chagig a registry key. DFS Needed for Active Directory with Group Policies If you use Active Directory ad Group Policies o Vista, DFS is required for group policy admiistratio. 49

Spaig Tree PortFast Required with Dual Network Cliet Ports If Spaig Tree PortFast is disabled whe your system is recoverig from a lik failure usig a dual etwork cliet port, a semaphore time-out error message appears. 50

51 Special Notes Broadcom-Based Network Adapter Registry Key Settig If you are coectig a Avid Uity ISIS cliet that uses a Broadcom -based etwork adapter you might eed to use the followig procedure to reduce the risk of Reassembly Failures, especially at higher resolutios (such as Avid DNxHD 145). Although the Broadcom etwork adapter does ot have a provisio today for settig the Trasmit (Tx) or Receive (Rx) Descriptors like the Itel MT Server etwork adapter, there is a registry key that ca be chaged o the Rx side (the side that is importat for improved Read performace) to miimize the risk of packet loss. The Avid Uity ISIS v2.x cliet software icludes the registry adjustmet for the followig computers. HP xw8600 workstatio HP xw4400 workstatio HP xw4600 workstatio If you istall Avid Uity ISIS cliet software o other cliets that use the Broadcom-based etwork adapter, you eed to perform the followig procedure to chage the Rx registry key value. To check if your computer or laptop uses a Broadcom-based etwork adapter: 1. Right-click My Computer, ad select Maage. 2. Click Device Maager i the left pae. 3. Click Network Adapters i the right pae to expad the list. Broadcom is listed uder the Network Adapters if you have a Broadcom Etheret coectio. To chage the Rx registry key value: 1. Click Start > Ru. 2. Type Regedit to eter the Registry Editor applicatio 3. Make sure that the highest level i the left pae of the Registry Editor is highlighted to esure a complete search of the Registry. This is usually My Computer. 4. Select Edit > Fid, or press Ctrl+F. 5. I the Fid What field, type RxStdDescCt ad click Fid Next. 6. Chage the value of RxStdDescCt from 200 (default) to 511 (o higher). 7. Select Edit > Fid Next, or press F3. There are likely two or three (possibly more) istaces of this key preset. You eed to chage all istaces to esure the correct value is active at a give time. 51

52 8. Cotiue to search the Registry usig the Fid Next butto util all istaces of the key are foud ad have bee chaged to the value of Restart the computer. After the restart, cosider opeig the Registry to cofirm the settig has chaged. Keep i mid that if the computer is re-imaged, or a ew driver is istalled, it is likely that this settig would maually eed to be chaged agai. Replacig a Iteral System Director Drive To replace the System Director drive: 1. Remove the failed drive from the frot of the System Director by releasig the drive latch o the frot of the drive ad pullig the drive from the chassis. 2. Isert the ew drive completely ito the ope drive slot ad close the drive latch. The ew drive iitiates ad completes the repair with o other itervetio. Loadig the System Software The Avid Uity ISIS System Setup Guide cotais complete istructios for loadig the software oto the system. You ca access the documetatio i the top-level AvidUityISISDocumetatio folder o the Avid Uity ISIS istaller DVD. For a summarized versio of the procedure, see Full Upgrade Istructios For v2.x o page 38. The followig sectios iclude importat iformatio about each istallatio. Istallig Macitosh Cliet Software Usig Safari Whe istallig the Avid Uity ISIS software o a Macitosh cliet usig the Safari browser; Safari completes the dowload, mouts the disk image, ad starts the istaller. Be aware that other browser applicatios do ot automatically mout the disk image. After the software is successfully istalled, dismout the istaller volume. To dismout the Avid Uity ISIS istaller volume o a Macitosh cliet: 1. Locate the mouted volumes listed i the left pae of the Fider widow. 2. Select the volume that cotais AvidUityISIS i the ame. 3. Click the eject butto that appears to the right of the volume ame. 52

53 Loadig the System Software Adjustig Etheret Iterface Settigs o Macitosh G5 Cliets Avid Uity ISIS makes itesive use of the Etheret iterfaces o your cliet system whe you work with high-defiitio resolutios. You must use the Avid Uity ISIS Etheret Tuig utility to adjust Etheret iterface parameters o all Macitosh G5 cliet systems coected to Avid Uity ISIS v1.2 or later. This utility modifies the Etheret driver settigs allowig Macitosh G5 cliet systems to coect to the Avid Uity ISIS eviromet. You ca ru the utility from the Avid Uity ISIS Istallatio DVD o ay Macitosh G5 system with a supported versio of Macitosh OSX (see Hardware ad Software Requiremets o page 41). You must have admiistrator privileges to modify Etheret iterface settigs, ad you must restart your system for the chages to take effect. To tue Etheret iterface settigs o Macitosh G5 cliets: 1. Navigate to the followig locatio o the Avid Uity ISIS Istallatio DVD: [DVD drive]:\isisutilities 2. Copy the Avid-Tue-Etheret.zip file to your Macitosh G5 ad double-click the file. The compressed file is upacked to your Macitosh system. 3. Double-click Avid-Tue-Etheret.app. The Avid Uity ISIS Etheret Tuig utility opes. If your settigs are ot yet optimized for the Avid Uity ISIS system, the utility provides a optio to tue the settigs. If they are already optimized, you ca quit the utility or restore the default values for the Etheret iterface settigs. 53
