1 a MediaShare F/C Release Release Notes These release otes cover chages to the MediaShare F/C eviromet. MediaShare F/C Release adds support for Mac OS 8.1 ad fixes a umber of problems experieced i earlier releases. These release otes describe how to update several of the MediaShare F/C software compoets. You should use these release otes with the MediaShare F/C Usage ad Maiteace Recommedatios icluded with these release otes. 2 2 Release Notes Software Requiremets MediaShare F/C Release uses the followig software o the Avid systems coected to the MediaShare F/C eviromet: Mac OS 7.6.1, Mac OS 8.0, or Mac OS 8.1 (obtaied separately) Java Developer s Kit Versio (o CD-ROM) MediaShare F/C software Release 2.45 (o CD-ROM) AVIDdrive Utility 2 Release 2.1 (o CD-ROM) AVIDstripe Extesio Release (o CD-ROM) EPCI Updater Release (o CD-ROM) ADU 2 Extesio Release 2.1 (o floppy disk) Istallig the Software MediaShare F/C Release updates the MediaShare F/C cotroller firmware ad the MediaShare F/C software to provide the additioal support for Avid systems ad MediaShare F/C drive eclosures. The MediaShare F/C cotroller firmware is supplied o a floppy disk that also icludes the ADU 2 Extesio. The MediaShare F/C software is supplied o a CD-ROM that also icludes the Java Developer s Kit ad the other MediaShare F/C utilities. The MediaShare F/C software must be istalled i a specific order for your MediaShare F/C eviromet to fuctio properly. To istall the MediaShare F/C software: If you are upgradig a existig MediaShare F/C system, begi the istallatio with Upgradig from Previous Releases o page 3. If you are istallig a ew MediaShare F/C system, begi your istallatio with Istallig Mac OS o page 3. Software Requiremets Part Rev. A

3 Release Notes 3 Upgradig from Previous Releases Whe you are upgradig a existig MediaShare F/C system to the ew MediaShare F/C software release, you eed to prepare your Avid system for the ew MediaShare F/C software. Make sure you perform all the followig steps before you add ay ew software to your Avid system. To upgrade a existig MediaShare F/C system: 1. Click ad hold the Apple meu. 2. Choose Uistall from the MediaShare submeu. The MediaShare F/C software is removed from the Avid system. Istallig Mac OS Before you istall ay of the MediaShare F/C software, you should reistall or update the versio of Mac OS ruig o your Avid system. Reistallig or updatig the Mac OS esures that you have all the ecessary system files to ru the MediaShare F/C software. Table 1 lists the extesios, cotrol paels, ad supportig files that are required to use MediaShare F/C o your Avid system. c After you reistall or update your software, do ot remove ay extesios or cotrol paels from the System folder. The MediaShare F/C software requires several system extesios ad cotrol paels that might have bee removed from your system. Reistallig Mac OS reistalls the missig extesios ad cotrol paels. Part Rev. 5 Release Notes 5 Cofigurig Mac OS To cofigure the Mac OS eviromet: 1. Ope the TCP/IP cotrol pael. 2. Make sure that Coect via: is set to Etheret. 3. Make sure that Cofigure: is set to Maually. 4. Make sure that IP Address is valid ad appropriate for your etwork. Also, all the Avid systems must be o the same etwork (that is, have the same umber i the first three digits of the IP address). If you are coectig to a i-house etwork, cotact your etwork admiistrator for assistace. 5. Set the subet mask to The Avid systems i the MediaShare F/C eviromet must be o a Class C Etheret etwork ad use the subet mask provided i step Leave all other fields i the cotrol pael blak. 7. Close the TCP/IP cotrol pael ad save the chages. 8. Ope the File Sharig cotrol pael. Avid systems ruig Mac OS or earlier use the Sharig Setup cotrol pael. 9. Type a ame for the system i the Computer Name text box. Avid systems ruig Mac OS or earlier use Macitosh Name istead of Computer Name. Part Rev. A Istallig the Software

6 6 Release Notes c Make sure you use oly the stadard alphabet characters (a z, A Z) ad umbers (0 9) i the Computer Name text box. Do ot use ay special characters, such as!, $,,,,,,, ad so o. These special characters are ot recogized by the MediaShare F/C software. 10. Close the File Sharig cotrol pael ad save the chages. 11. Ope the Extesios Maager cotrol pael. 12. Make sure the AppleScript, the AppleScriptLib, ad Foreig File Access extesios have a x i the check box ext to their ames. This idicates the extesios are loaded whe you start your Avid system. Avid systems ruig Mac OS or earlier use the AppleScript, Fider Scriptig Extesio, ad Foreig File Access extesios. 13. Make sure you have a Scriptig Additios folder i the Extesios folder. 14. Close the Extesios Maager cotrol pael ad save the chages. 15. If you have updated your Avid system to ru Mac OS 8.1, ope the MS Prefereces Paels folder i the Extesios folder i the System folder, ad drag the Java file to the desktop. 16. Close all the ope folders. 17. Choose Restart from the Special meu to restart your Avid system. If steps 1 to 17 are ot completed correctly, the MediaShare F/C software might ot fuctio. 7 Release Notes 7 Updatig the MediaShare F/C Cotroller Firmware The MediaShare F/C cotroller firmware is supplied o floppy disk. To istall the updated MediaShare F/C cotroller firmware: 1. Load the ADU 2 Extesio floppy disk ito the floppy drive o the Avid system. 2. Double-click the Floppy Disk ico ad locate the Media FC Flasher applicatio. 3. Double-click the flasher. It dowloads the updated firmware to the MediaShare F/C cotroller board. This process takes approximately 1 miute. 4. Choose Restart from the Special meu to restart your Avid system. Fidig the ADU 2 Extesio Serial Number Make sure you have the ADU 2 Extesio serial umber for each MediaShare F/C cliet writte dow so you ca reeter it after you upgrade to the ew release of the extesio. Each cliet requires a uique serial umber. The serial umber for each cliet is located o the ADU 2 Extesio floppy disk label that was icluded with your origial system shipmet. If you caot locate the origial floppy disk, you ca retrieve the serial umber usig AVIDdrive Utility. To retrieve your serial umber: 1. Start AVIDdrive Utility 2. It is usually located i the Utilities folder. 2. Choose Save Report from the File meu. A report is created that cotais the serial umber i both the report title ad i the report body. I the report title, the secod series of umbers is the ADU 2 serial umber. For example, i the report title XXXXXX YYYYYYY ADU 2 report, the YYYYYYY text block is the serial umber. Part Rev. 8 8 Release Notes Updatig the ADU 2 Extesio To update the ADU 2 Extesio: 1. Locate the ADU 2 Extesio o the floppy disk. 2. Double-click the Avid Drive ico. 3. Drag the ADU 2 Extesio to the System folder. A message appears statig that the extesio belogs i the Extesios folder. 4. Click OK. 5. Choose Restart from the Special meu to restart the Avid system. 6. Type the serial umber for the ADU 2 Extesio whe prompted after your Avid system reboots. Updatig the MediaShare F/C Software All of the MediaShare F/C software is ow istalled usig a sigle istall applicatio. This applicatio istalls the Java Developer s Kit, the Avid MediaShare F/C utilities, ad the MediaShare software. To istall the MediaShare F/C software: 1. Load the MediaShare F/C CD-ROM ito the CD-ROM drive. The MediaShare_F/C_Istall widow opes. 2. Double-click the AvidIstall ico to start the MediaShare software istallatio. The Java Developer s Kit splash scree opes. Istallig the Software Part Rev. A

9 Release Notes 9 3. Click Cotiue o the Java splash scree. 4. Click Cotiue after you read the licese agreemet. The Java Istaller widow opes. 5. Make sure the Istall Locatio is set to the system drive (ormally called Avid). 6. Click Istall. If the Java software is already istalled o your Avid system, you will see a message iformig you that o chages are ecessary. Part Rev. A Istallig the Software

10 10 Release Notes If the Java software is ot already istalled o your Avid system, the istallatio creates a folder o the Avid drive. Whe the istallatio is complete, you will see a message iformig you that the istallatio was successful. 7. Click Quit to quit the Java istaller ad cotiue the MediaShare software istallatio. 8. A splash scree itroduces the MediaShare F/C utilities software istaller. You do ot eed to respod to ay messages durig this part of the MediaShare software istallatio. Istallig the Software Part Rev. 11 Release Notes The MediaShare Istallatio widow opes. 10. Click Start Istallatio. After approximately 1 miute, a Istallatio widow opes ad displays the licese agreemet. 11. Click Accept after you read the agreemet. The MediaShare software istalls ad restarts the Avid system. 12. Click OK i the Success widow to restart the Avid system. Fixed Bugs i Release The MediaShare F/C drives i the MSDE itermittetly spi dow o their ow. The problem was caused by a faulty iteractio betwee the drives ad MSDE power supplies. Replacig the MSDE power supplies with updated power supplies fixes the problem. The MediaShare F/C system produces system errors, Macitosh Error -36 messages, or a blak scree. The sigal itegrity of the MediaShare F/C cotroller board was out of specificatio. Replacig the MediaShare F/C cotroller board with a updated cotroller board resolves the sigal itegrity problem. 12 12 Release Notes The MediaShare F/C system itermittetly hags usig 3D effects ad shows icosistet drive-moutig characteristics. There was a improper iteractio betwee MediaShare F/C hardware ad MediaShare F/C software o systems with a specific combiatio of compoets. Replacig the MediaShare F/C cotroller board with a updated cotroller board resolves both issues. The MediaShare F/C system shows uacceptable Media Composer performace. There were problems with the way Media Composer Release hadled media files whe a large umber of volumes mouted o the desktop ad the associated media folders cotaied a large umber of media files. Chages implemeted i Media Composer CPR 7.02v1 restore acceptable performace levels. The MediaShare F/C system crashes whe accessig the Memory cotrol pael. There was a problem with the MediaShare F/C software that caused it to ot always mout ad umout volumes properly, especially durig startup. This left the system i a fragile state. Release 2.45 of the MediaShare F/C software fixes the problem. The MediaShare F/C system is producig umapped memory error messages. There was a problem with the MediaShare F/C software that caused it to produce the umapped memory errors. Release 2.45 of the MediaShare F/C software fixes the problem. Fixed Bugs i Release Part Rev. 13 Release Notes 13 There is a problem with Java Startup. There was a coflict betwee the AVIDstartup, the MediaShare.class startup, ad Macitosh Ope Trasport startup. The problem is fixed by the ew MediaShare istallatio procedure. It sets MediaShare.class to start before AVIDstartup. If you cotiue to have problems with the startup sequece, check to see that MediaShare.class is physically before AVIDstartup i the Startup folder foud i the System folder. You ca determie the file order by opeig the Startup folder ad selectig by Name from the View meu. If MediaShare.class is ot physically before AVIDstartup, add a space before the MediaShare.class ame to reorder the files i the Startup folder.
