3 STEP 1: REGISTERING YOUR COMPUTER FOR USE WITH KWANSEI GAKUIN NETWORK 1.1 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS A computer with one of the following operating systems: Windows 7 (service pack 1 and later) Mac OS X (10.7 and later) ios (iphone, ipod touch, ipad, ipad mini) A computer with network connectivity Computers without Ethernet port can connect to the school network using the following Ethernet adaptor that supports the 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, or 1000BASE-T Ethernet standards. LAN cable (straight cable) A password and User ID provided by the Organization for Information Management and Communication 1.2 PROCEDURES REQUIRED FOR ACCESSING THE UNIVERSITY NETWORK ON-CAMPUS 1. Download the for privately owned computers application form (Excel file). 2. Complete it. 3. Then send the file to the following address: ipaddress@kwansei.ac.jp from your KWANSEI account Note: To connect your computer from within an on-campus office or lab, you need to download and complete another type of application form. Also you need to fill out a separate form for each place where you connect your computer. 4 1.3 HOW TO FILL OUT APPLICATION 2
5 1.4 HOW TO FIND YOUR COMPUTER S MAC ADDRESS 1) In the Apple menu, select System Preferences. (See 1.4.1) ) In the System Preferences window, select the Network icon. (See 1.4.2)
6 3) In the Network window, click Ethernet in the list of network services on the left. (See 1.4.3) 4) Click the Advanced button. (See 1.4.4)
7 5) Select the Hardware tab. (See 1.4.5) 6) MAC Address here is the MAC address needed for a wired LAN connection. (See 1.4.6)
8 1.5 WIRED LAN LOCATIONS As for the wired LAN locations, refer to Information System Web Service ( User's Guide > LAN Connection for Your Computers 1.6 BEFORE CONFIGURING YOUR COMPUTER When you configure your computer for use on the university network, it may change your previous configuration. If it does, you may have trouble when you return to your previous network. Please, therefore, take accurate notes of your non-school system settings BEFORE changing the settings so that you can re-create your network without any problems. We assume no responsibility whatever for any troubles resulting from the use of this manual, such as having problems connecting to your previous network. 1.7 COMPUTER SECURITY AND VIRUS PREVENTION Install appropriate anti-virus software on your computer. Download the latest virus definition files and keep anti-virus software up to date. Update the software on a regular basis. Note: Check for expiration dates on your antivirus to insure that your virus prevention software is actually functioning. If University Network security detects that your computer has a virus, your connection with the university system will be automatically severed. 6
9 STEP 2: CONFIGURING YOUR NETWORK AND WEB PROXY SETTINGS 2.1 CREATING A PROFILE FOR THE UNIVERSITY NETWORK Note: Login to your computer with an administrator account and configure the following settings. 1) In the Apple menu, select System Preferences. (See 2.1.1) ) In the System Preferences window, select the Network icon. (See 2.1.2)
10 3) In the Network window, click Ethernet in the list of network services on the left. (See 2.1.3) 4) Location is generally set to Automatic. Click Location, then select Edit Locations in the Location pop-up menu. (See 2.1.4) ) In the drop down pane, click the Plus (+) button. (See 2.1.5)
11 6) This will create a new Location which you can then modify. Its default name is Untitled. (See 2.1.6) ) Change the default name to something easy to remember such as KGwied. (See 2.1.7) 8) Click the Done button. (See 2.1.8)
12 2.2 SETTING UP A PROFILE FOR THE UNIVERSITY NETWORK 1) Select the KGwied location in the Location pop-up menu. (See 2.2.1) 2) Click Ethernet in the list of network services on the left and then click the Apply button. (See 2.2.2, 2.2.3) 3) Click the Advanced button. (See 2.2.4)
13 2.3 SETTING UP TCP/IP 1) Select the TCP/IP tab. (See 2.3.1) 2) Make sure Using DHCP is selected in the Configure IPv4 pop-up menu. (See 2.3.2)
14 2.4 ADDING SEARCH DOMEINS 1) Select the DNS tab. (See 2.4.1) 2) Click the Plus (+) button. (See 2.4.2) 3) Add [kwansei.ac.jp] and [nuc.kwansei.ac.jp] each at a time. (See 2.4.3) Search Domains: [kwansei.ac.jp] [nuc.kwansei.ac.jp]
15 2.5 PROXY SETTINGS A. SETTING UP WEB PROXY 1) Select the Proxies tab. (See 2.5.1) 2) Check the Web Proxy (HTTP). (See 2.5.2) 3) In the box labeled Web Proxy Server, type in [Proxy Address]. 16 B. SETTING UP SECURE WEB PROXY 1) Check the Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS). (See 2.5.5) 2) In the box labeled Secure Web Proxy Server type in [Proxy Address]. (See 2.5.6) 3) Click the OK button. (See 2.5.7) Nishinomiya Uegahara, Nishinomiya Seiwa, Osaka Umeda campuses [proxy.kwansei.ac.jp] : [ 8080 ] Kobe Sanda campus [proxy.ksc.kwansei.ac.jp] : [ 8080 ]
17 2.6 CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET 1) Connect a LAN cable from the LAN outlet to your computer. 2) Once your LAN cable is connected correctly, the following window will appear as below. In the box labeled Account Name, type in your Kwansei User ID. In the box labeled Password, enter your Kwansei password. (See 2.6.1) Uncheck the Remember this information. (See 2.6.2) 3) Click the OK button. (See 2.6.3) ) The Authenticating to 802.1X network will appear. 5) Click the Show Certificate button. (See 2.6.4)
18 6) Make sure the checkbox for Always trust imacs-1302.kwansei.ac.jp is checked. (See 2.6.5) 7) Click the Continue button. (See 2.6.6) ) If a dialog box appears as shown below, enter your computer s administrator ID in the box labeled Name, and password in the box labeled Password. Click the Update Settings button. (See 2.6.7, 2.6.8)
19 9) Click the Apply button. (See 2.6.9)
20 2.7 VERIFYING THE CONNECTION If you have completed all steps successfully, the Status should read Connected. (See 2.7.1) If, at this point, you are unable to connect to the World Wide Web, the problem probably lies with the Web Proxy settings. Go back to the beginning of step 2.5 and redo PROXY SETTINGS WHEN ACCESSING THE INTERNET FROM AN OFF-CAMPUS LOCATION It is important to note that the internet configuration described in this manual only applies to oncampus operation. When connecting to the internet with your computer from off-campus, change the setting on the Location menu from KGWired to whatever selection is appropriate. (In most circumstances, the default setting will work.) 18
21 STEP 3: HOW TO MAP NETWORK DRIVES The university provides data storage for all users and personal folders dedicated to each user. Note: Users can access shared folders and personal folders only from on-campus. For off-campus access, log on to Information System Web Service ( first. Then click the drive name you wish to open under Web Folder. 3.1 SHARED ONLINE DATA STORAGE (DRIVES Y, M, Q AND X) The university provides data storage, such as Drive Y, M, Q, and X where all users can access from on-campus. Drive Y Data Storage for Teaching Materials Housed at the Nishinomiya Uegahara Campus. All users can download data and execute programs in Drive Y. As for the Teachers folder, the faculty only can upload and delete data in the folder. Drive M Data Storage for Teaching Materials Housed at the Kobe Sanda Campus. All users can download data and execute programs in Drive M, while the faculty and the staff only can upload and delete data in the drive. Drive Q Data Storage for Teaching Materials Housed at the Nishinomiya Seiwa Campus. All users can download data and execute programs in Drive Q, while the faculty only can upload and delete data in the drive. Drive X Temporary Storage for Shared Data Any user can download data, execute programs, upload and delete data in the drive. The System Administrator reserves the right to delete documents as necessary, throughout the year, especially at the end of both the spring and fall semesters. 19
22 3.2 YOUR PERSONAL DATA STORAGE (DRIVE Z) The university provides another online data storage, Drive Z, for users to store their personal documents. Drive Z is referred to as My Documents on all classroom computers operated by the university. The Drive Z (My Document) is given to each user for his/her private use. Therefore, another user will not be able to access your Drive Z (My Document). Backing up your files to Drive Z is recommended for the following reasons: Even when your personally-owned computer crushes, from another computer you can access Drive Z and retrieve your data that you backed up on. Drive Z can be accessed from off-campus through the internet using your Web Folder. 3.3 SETTING UP SHARED ONLINE DATA STORAGE (DRIVES Y, M, Q, AND X) 1) Select Connect to Server... in the Go menu in the menu bar of the finder. (See 3.3.1, 3.3.2)
23 2) In the box labeled Server Address, type in the server address for each drive you wish to connect. (See 3.3.3) Server Addresses Drive Y: smb://kgs/file/y Drive M: smb://kgs/file/m Drive Q: smb://kgs/file/q Drive X: smb://kgs/file/x 3) Click the Connect button. (See 3.3.4) ) A window will appear with the instructions: Enter your name and password for the server kgs. In the box labeled Name, type in your Kwansei User ID. (See 3.3.5) In the box labeled Password, enter your Kwansei password. (See 3.3.6) 5) Click the Connect button. (See 3.3.7)
24 3.4 SETTING UP YOUR PERSONAL DATA STORAGE (DRIVE Z) 1) Select Connect to Server in the Go menu in the menu bar of the Finder. (See 3.4.1, 3.4.2) ) In the box labeled Server Address, type in the server address. (See 3.4.3) [include here your User ID] (For instance, if your User ID is abc12345, type in 3) Click the Connect button. (See 3.4.4)
25 4) A window will appear with the instructions: Enter your name and password for the server webfolder.kwansei.ac.jp. In the box labeled Name, type in your Kwansei User ID. (See 3.4.5) In the box labeled Password, enter your Kwansei password. (See 3.4.6) 5) Click the Connect. (See 3.4.7)
26 STEP 4: ENDING A SESSION In the Apple menu, select Shut Down to turn off your computer. OTHER: PRINTING DOCUMENTS As for the printer settings, refer to Information System Web Service ( User's Guide > How to Use the Printer System > 持込デバイスの印刷設定. (Japanese text only) 24
27 TROUBLESHOOTING If the status does not read Connected in the section 2.7 [VERIFYING THE CONNECTION], Double check to see if the LAN cable is securely plugged into both your computer as well as the LAN outlet. If you cannot access external websites, though the status reads Connected in the section 2.7 [VERIFYING THE CONNECTION], Double check your proxy settings. (See 2.5 PROXY SETTINGS) The following message appears: "Enter the name and password for this 802.1X network." There is a possibility that you may enter incorrect information and authentication fails. Enter your Kwansei User ID and password again. If you have done all of the above and still cannot connect to the internet, Restart your computer. 25
