3 lntroduction The Metasys Operator Workstation and N LAN are designed to function in harmony with standard, off-the-shelf PC software. Through the use of Windows drivers and third-party applications, Metasys Network-wide data can be used in reports, charts, and graphs. This document contains the following section: Metasys and Spreadsheets Using any spreadsheet program that can read files formatted in dbase III (.DBF extension), data collected from the Trend, Totalization, and Point History features can be opened as a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is a snapshot of Metasys data at that moment. You can then use your spreadsheet program to prepare reports, charts, and graphs. Note: The spreadsheet applications described in this document do not require Metalink, a Metasys software package which uses Microsoft Windows Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). For details on how your application uses.dbf files, refer to the manufacturer s literature. App. Notes: Network Communications Spreadsheet Applications 3

5 Metasys and Spreadsheet Applications The Trend, Totalization, and Point History features of Metasys store collected data in.dbf files. Many spreadsheet applications, such as Microsoft Excel, and data base managers, such as Borland International Inc. s dbase III/IV can read these types of files. By using one of these applications, you can import and manipulate the.dbf files for the purpose of creating professional reports, pie charts, bar graphs, and any other data representation that the application provides. This section describes how to find, import, and manipulate these files. Examples are also given. Locating and Opening.DBF Files Metasys stores the.dbf files in a specific location on the Operator Workstation s hard disk. Figure shows the directory path under which the.dbf files are stored. Other directories [FMS]* [DATA]** Other directories Other directories PTHISTRY [SYSTEM NAME] [OBJ.DBF] [OBJ.DBF] [OBJ3.DBF] [NETWORKn] * For BEA, [PROJECT #] ** For BEA, [CONTRACT #] [PC File Destination Name] TOTAL [SYSTEM NAME] [OBJECT NAME] [ATTR#.DBF] [ATTR#.DBF] [ATTR#.DBF] TREND [SYSTEM NAME] [OBJECT NAME] [ATTR#.DBF] [ATTR#.DBF] [ATTR#.DBF] NETMAP Figure : Location of.dbf Files App. Notes: Network Communications Spreadsheet Applications 5

6 Follow these steps to open a.dbf file:. Start your spreadsheet application.. Change the default extension specified in the file name field to *.DBF (if necessary). 3. Use the mouse to penetrate the directories until you reach the desired.dbf file. (Refer to Figure for the directory structure.) An example is 8.DBF. ( 8 is the attribute number.) 4. Load the file..dbf File Formats Since the type of data collected by the Totalization, Trend, and Point History features differs, the format of their.dbf files also differs. The following sections explain these formats. (The examples used are from Pioneer Software System s Q+E for Microsoft Excel.) 12 .DBF File Examples You may manipulate the data in the fields of a.dbf file in any manner that the application allows. For example, you can delete those columns that contain irrelevant data and widen those columns that have important data. In that manner, you can create a well-formatted report for presentation or filing purposes. If your application allows it, you may also create a line or bar graph from data in the chart.! CAUTION: Do not edit an original.dbf file created by Metasys, because the network may try to write to this file while you have it opened. Instead, make a copy of the.dbf file, retaining the.dbf extension. Then, edit the copied file. The following are examples that show you how the original.dbf files can be manipulated. Line and bar graph examples are given. Totalization The example in Figure 5 shows the total daily runtime in minutes for a supply fan. The recording begins on February, 99 and ends on February, 99. VALUE DURATION Spreadsheet YEAR MONTH DAY HOUR MINUTE Line Graph DURATION DAY E-TOTAL Figure 5: Totalization Spreadsheet Example App. Notes: Network Communications Spreadsheet Applications

13 Trend In Figure, the example trends outdoor air temperature as it changes during the late hours of the day. The sampling begins at 3 p.m. and ends at midnight. One sample is taken each hour. Spreadsheet YEAR MONTH DAY HOUR MINUTE VALUE (DEGF) VALUE (DEGF) 7. Line Graph HOUR E-TREND Figure : Trend Spreadsheet Example Point History The Point History example shown in Figure 7 is for an analog data point that fluctuates from hour to hour. 15 Conclusion This document explained how the.dbf files that Metasys creates can be used to prepare reports, charts, and graphs. The value of any object that can use the Trend, Totalization, or Point History features can be used with spreadsheet applications. If you require more information on these Metasys features, refer to their respective technical documentation under the Feature Software section of this manual.
