1 Computer Applications with Keyboarding Month Content Skills January INTRODUCTION TO CLASS Lab rules, procedures and course overview Review of touch-typing, proper technique, and what home row fingers strike the letters on the keyboard. What is proper vocabulary for computer software and computer hardware? Demonstrate proper keystroking and proper technique Demonstrate touch typing method for all letters Identify vocabulary to include MS Word screen and toolbars Demonstrate efficient use of MS Word using the toolbar features, shortcuts buttons, and create files in student directory What are the top row numbers and all symbols? Demonstrate proper striking of the numbers and symbols Identify which home row finger strikes each number or symbol How fast and accurate are you typing? Practice improvement in accuracy and speed Identify which home row finger strikes each key, numbers, symbols What are the rules of spacing and punctuation? What is the keypad? What is the proper technique for the keypad? How can I leave notes on someone else s paper so they can understand what needs to be fixed? PowerPoint Unit What is PowerPoint? What is the purpose of creating a slide show? What guidelines should be followed when creating a slide show? How do I create a slide show? What tasks can I use? Demonstrate proper use of spacing and punctuation Demonstrate proper technique using the keypad Introduce standard proofreaders marks Demonstrate the proper use of proofreaders marks Identify parts of the PowerPoint screen Explain the purpose of creating a slide show Students will determine if certain applications of PowerPoint are appropriate Identify basic guideline that should be followed when creating a slide show, 7 X 7 rule. Demonstrate the ability to create a slide show from a blank template Ability to do the following tasks in PowerPoint software: identify parts of the screen, use all views when creating a presentation, and toolbar buttons 1 of 6

2 Ability to do/understand the following when required: create & change text attributes, create & change template design, create & change slide layouts, change master slide, create & change formatting attributes, create & change picture attributes, create & change slide transition, create & change custom animation. Run an animation slide show, ability to print in various formats, create header & footer information, ability to view presentation in various formats, and add clipart or picture from file. Manipulate speed of timings and transitions so slide show runs at appropriate seed. February March Continue identifying the top row numbers and all symbols? How fast and accurate are you typing? Continue rules with spacing and punctuation? What is the keypad? What is the proper technique for the keypad? PowerPoint (Continuation from last month) Are you using the proper technique when typing? Demonstrate proper striking of the numbers and symbols. Apply proper format for a business report Recognize when to use each report Demonstrate how to format documents in word processing software Demonstrate how to properly format, create and print an envelope for a document Demonstrate proper format, create and print a business letter Recognize the difference between the letters Recognize the difference between Block and Modified-Block formatting Ability to apply the following applications using MS Word software: formatting toolbar, standard toolbar vertical/horizontal centering, shortcut keys Describe what a worksheet is Identify occupations where people use the program Identify parts of the Excel Screen parts such as the worksheet, workbook, toolbars, shortcut buttons, and autocalculate feature Who uses the Excel software? Why is it important to understand formulas in a spreadsheet? What is the order of operations in mathematics? Apply the order of operations in mathematics and identify how it relates to the computer Ability to efficiently move, select, and make changes to the cells in Excel worksheet Ability to enter data into a worksheet, merge, center, autoformat a range, and calculate totals How can you create charts and format larger worksheets? Create an embedded chart using chart wizard Ability to write, use, copy equations in Excel Identify the different between relative and absolute references Ability to format spreadsheet using various functions 3 of 6

Identify/use common computer terminology used in the windows environment and Microsoft Word software Demonstrate proper technique at keyboard Practice improvement in speed and accuracy Apply proper spacing, capitalization, and spelling Demonstrate ability to format appropriate letter or report style. Apply the following applications using MS word software: formatting toolbar, standard toolbar, table toolbar, vertical/horizontal centering, and shortcut keys Ability to rotate text, use fill handle, format painter 4 of 6
