2 The Phase 4 software upgrade to the Honeywell Epic system adds the option for display of electronic charts in the cockpit. This feature is available on either displays #2 or #3, depending on the pilot selectable MFD location, and is activated by selecting CHART from the menu bar at the top of the MFD. Chart data is supplied from Jeppessen via a subscription service through Integrated Navigation Data Services (INDS). Therefore, charts seen on the Sovereign cockpit displays are identical to the paper versions supplied from Jeppessen. In addition, electronic charts offer the display of an aircraft symbol depicting the current FMS position in relation to the chart. Panning or Zooming for each image is controlled through either Cursor Control Device (CCD) in the pedestal. Airport Terminal charts are available showing taxiways and other major features. Again the aircraft position symbol is added to increase situational awareness.

3 Once a flight plan is loaded into the Epic FMS, a selection of the origin, destination and alternate airports is made available through a drop-down menu on the charts page. A search feature is also available to aid in locating airport information and associated charts. Searches may be conducted by entering all or part of the ICAO identifier, airport, city or even country names. Text entry is done through the CCD using an onscreen keyboard. A split screen function allows the display of two images simultaneously. This feature is activated through the CCD, which then adds either the chart header, vertical profile or minimums information to the lower portion of the display.

4 Other information commonly available in paper form from Jeppessen is also available through the electronic charts option. This includes SIDs, STARs, Noise Abatement, NOTAMs and Airspace restrictions. The Phase 4 software update also includes the option of Uplinked Graphical Weather which is activated by selection of UPWX from the menu bar at the top of the MFD. This feature offers much more than graphical weather images. Maps from the common term Charts & Maps refers primarily to this additional navigation information. Features such as geo-political boundaries, airways and the active flight plan with the aircraft s current position symbol can all be displayed in combination with the weather data.

5 The Communication Management Function (CMF) provides the data path to receive the weather graphics. Subscription through a service provider such as the Honeywell Global Data Center (GDC) is required. Services available include NEXRAD Radar, Satellite images of cloud cover and graphical Winds aloft data. To minimize data uplink time, the pilot may select specific information types and only the geographical regions of interest. The various data images of RADAR, Satellite images and Winds may be displayed individually or in any combination with each other.. `

6 The Maps function available to support Uplinked Graphical Weather has many of the same features available on the standard Multi-Function Display (MFD). This includes display of the active flight plan programmed into the FMS along with airports and NavAids. In addition, the maps function offers pilot selectable display of airways or terminal and special use airspace. Uplinked weather data may also be integrated onto these maps along with the aircraft position symbol to provide maximum situational awareness.

7 The new Advanced File and Graphics Server (AFGS) is required for either the electronic charts or uplinked graphical weather options. One AFGS module supports both options and provides display data for either displays #2 or #3 in the cockpit. The AFGS module is added to MAU 1 in the left side of the nose compartment. Special cabling for the high speed Remote Image Bus (RIB) routes video information to the cockpit displays. Electronic charts and the navigation data to support the maps used with graphical weather are all stored on a PCMCIA card residing within the Data Management Unit (DMU). Integrated Navigation Data Services (INDS) provides data updates via CD on a 14 day cycle. They offer data services to support electronic charts, maps, EGPWS and FMS Navigation databases. Loading procedures involve both the DMU and the remote terminal (laptop PC).
