1 TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN Release date: 9 January 2009 Bulletin N : 2009 / 320 FROM: FOR: MUTOH service & support departement AUTHORIZED MUTOH RESELLERS ONLY Spitfire 65/90 Extreme and Rockhopper 3 Extreme New firmware version sx3.06 Dear Customer, There is a new firmware version (sx3.06) for the Spitfire 65/90 Extreme and Rockhopper 3 Extreme series printers. Please read this Technical Information Bulletin to know what the new features are, which items have been changed and which bugfixes have been made. 1 Installation of new firmware Note Please refer to TIB284 for all details on how to install the new firmware. This function is made available especially to restart a Spitfire 65/90 equipped valve dampers in LongStore mode.

2 2 User Mode 2.1 New features 1) Discharge function There is a new function available in the InkManager menu (5/7), namely Discharge. With this function it is possible to remove all ink or cleaning liquid out of the tubes of the printer. This function is made available especially to restart a Spitfire 65/90 equipped valve dampers in LongStore mode. Please find below the updated procedure to start up after a LongStore: Step1: Power ON the machine. Step2: Go to H. Unlock (SetupMenu 6/7 > H. Unlock > Yes > F2). Step3: Moisten the caps with Mutoh Mild Solvent cleaning liquid. Step4: Remove the Mutoh cleaning cassettes. Step5: Empty the waste bottle Step6: Perform a discharge of 2 minutes as follows: Go to SetupMenu 5/7 and select F2 InkManager Press F2 to open the discharge menu Press F1 to select Pump 1 = head 1&2. Press F1 to start the discharge The printer will start pumping Manually stop the discharge after 2 minutes by browsing to the discharge menu once again. Press the F2 key to stop the discharge this time. The cancel key will not work. Perform a discharge of 2 minutes for pump 2= head 3&4 now. Note It is impossible to interrupt a discharge when selecting ALL heads. Only when you discharge the heads seperately, a manual stop is possible. Step7: Step8: Step9: Step10: Insert Mutoh Mild Solvent (Plus) Ink Cassettes in the correct order. Perform an Ink Load. Perform a nozzle check and necessary cleanings until all nozzles are present. 2) First ink load cycles Because of the decision that the valve dampers will be delivered as standard on a Spitfire 65/90 series printer as from January 1st 2009, the first ink load procedure needed

3 2) First ink load cycles Because of the decision that the valve dampers will be delivered as standard on a Spitfire 65/90 series printer as from January 1st 2009, the first ink load procedure needed to be revised. This had also a repercussion for the firmware. The valve dampers need to be mounted during a pause in the ink load cycle. Therefore it has to be possible to interrupt the automatic cycle to install the valve dampers. Please refer to TIB322: First Ink Load with valve dampers for all details. 3) Not original ink message In former firmware versions, when an invalid ink cassette was inserted, the general message Not original ink was displayed. As from this firmware, this message has been changed. The affected slot numbers will now be displayed. 4) Adjustable smart top feed Because of the new position of the A-heater, the Smart TopFeed feature has been made adjustable. Pleaser refer to TIB325: New pre-heater section for more details. To guarantee proper pre-heating for the first printjob, with the new A-heater position, a smart top feed of 100 mm is recommended. To avoid this, a process indicator has been added in the upper right corner. Even when you are deep in the printer menu.

4 2.2 Changed features 1) Process indicator Some printer processes may take a few minutes and sometimes a minute of rest to stabilize the system. During this period, it was not always clear if the printer was still functioning. The normal reaction was powering OFF or even removing the power plug which could damage the unit. To avoid this, a process indicator has been added in the upper right corner. Even when you are deep in the printer menu. This indicator will be visible during for example an InkLoad, TubingFlush, media measurement. It will not be visible during printing because there is already a progress bar available during this action. Please find below an example of the process indicator. 2) Progress bar indication During an ink load, there will be a progress bar visible. If the bar stops moving, the ink load will be suspended due to an error condition. 3) Zero minutes indication In previous firmware version, when the ink load lasts less than 1 minute, there was 0 minutes indicated. As from this firmware, this will be replaced with < 1 min. 4) Stabilization time countdown When an ink load has been interrupted due to a stabilization procedure, a countdown screen will be displayed during the ink load stabilization time. This to draw the customers attention that the printer is waiting. 5) Countdown when waste bottle is full When the waste bottle was full during an ink load, the countdown continued when the waste bottle replacement confirmation message was still displayed. As from now, the countdown starts at the correct moment. 2.3 Bugfixes In previous versions, when performing an inkload in chipmanager printer mode, the waste amount was counted double. 3 Diagnostics Mode 3.1 New features 1) Damper Type After switching from classic to valve dampers, be sure to correctly set the damper type in diagnostics.

This will allow the firmware to correctly calculate the ink consume. Step1: Power ON in diagnostics. Step2: Go to the Parameter-menu Step3: Go to the Update-menu Step4: Go to the Damper Type menu and select either Classic or Valve dampers 2) SolPrepare flag As from this firmware, it is possible to interrupt the first ink load cycle at the moment one of the following screens is displayed: In normal conditions, when powering ON the printer again, the first ink load cycle resumes. If this normal start-up does not work, it is possible to set the SolPrepare flag to the point you have stopped: OFF (same as former Reset ) - No SolPrepare at start-up FROM START (same as former Set) - The SolPrepare will start all over STL DONE - The first cleaning cycle (with Eco-Solvent Ultra cleaning) has been finished successfully before powering OFF. At this time, decide whether to install the valve dampers or continue with the classic damper. 3.2 Service mode The service mode has been changed. IPaddress is now spelled correctly.

6 MS CL DONE (only for Mild solvent (Plus)!) - The second cleaning cycle (with Mild Solvent) has been finished successfully INK HALFWAY - The classic dampers have been filled with Mild Solvent ink. At this time, decide whether to install the valve dampers or continue with the classic damper. 3.2 Service mode The service mode has been changed. IPaddress is now spelled correctly. SubNetMask has been added ([F2]-key) 3.3 Service chip activation menu The service chip activation menu has been updated. Removed strange symbols when retrying Indication of retry attempts. 3.4 Bugfixes Removed the short appearance of random characters when entering the sensor menu.
