15 Wireless Netwrking and Security Hw t chse the type f security fr yur wireless netwrk Setting up wireless security is very imprtant. Leaving yur wireless netwrk pen and unsecure culd expse yur entire netwrk and persnal files t utsiders. TRENDnet recmmends reading thrugh this entire sectin and setting up wireless security n yur new ruter. There are a few different wireless security types supprted in wireless netwrking each having its wn characteristics which may be mre suitable fr yur wireless netwrk taking int cnsideratin cmpatibility, perfrmance, as well as the security strength alng with using lder wireless netwrking hardware (als called legacy hardware). It is strngly recmmended t enable wireless security t prevent unwanted users frm accessing yur netwrk and netwrk resurces (persnal dcuments, media, etc.). In general, it is recmmended that yu chse the security type with the highest strength and perfrmance supprted by the wireless cmputers and devices in yur netwrk. Please review the security types t determine which ne yu shuld use fr yur netwrk. Wireless Encryptin Types WEP: Legacy encryptin methd supprted by lder b/g hardware. Nte: This encryptin standard will limit cnnectin speeds t 54Mbps. WPA: This encryptin is significantly mre rbust than the WEP technlgy. Much f the lder g hardware was been upgraded (with firmware/driver upgrades) t supprt this encryptin standard. Ttal wireless speeds under this encryptin type hwever are limited t 54Mbps. WPA-Aut: This setting prvides the ruter with the ability t detect wireless devices using either WPA r WPA2 encryptin. Yur wireless netwrk will autmatically change the encryptin setting based n the first wireless device cnnected. Fr example, if the first wireless client that cnnects t yur wireless netwrk uses WPA encryptin yur wireless netwrk will use WPA encryptin. Only when all wireless clients discnnect t the netwrk and a wireless client with WPA2 encryptin cnnects yur wireless netwrk will then change t WPA2 encryptin. NOTE: WPA2 encryptin supprts n speeds and WPA encryptin will limit yur cnnectin speeds t 54Mbps WPA2: This is the mst secure wireless encryptin available tday, similar t WPA encryptin but mre rbust. This encryptin standard als supprts the highest cnnectin speeds. TRENDnet recmmends setting yur ruter t this encryptin standard. If yu find that ne f yur wireless netwrk devices des nt supprt WPA2 encryptin, then set yur ruter t either WPA r WPA-Aut encryptin. This feature requires the wireless device t als supprt WMM. Click Enabled (recmmended) r Disabled t turn this feature n r ff n yur ruter. Steps t imprve wireless cnnectivity There are a number f factrs that can impact the range f wireless devices. Fllw these tips t help imprve yur wireless cnnectivity: 1. Keep the number f bstructins t a minimum. Each bstructin can reduce the range f a wireless device. Psitin the wireless devices in a manner that will minimize the amunt f bstructins between them. a. Fr the widest cverage area, install yur ruter near the center f yur hme, and near the ceiling, if pssible. b. Avid placing the ruter n r near metal bjects (such as file cabinets and metal furniture), reflective surfaces (such as glass r mirrrs), and masnry walls. c. Any bstructin can weaken the wireless signal (even nn-metallic bjects), s the fewer bstructins between the ruter and the wireless device, the better. d. Place the ruter in a lcatin away frm ther electrnics, mtrs, and flurescent lighting. e. Many envirnmental variables can affect the ruter s perfrmance, s if yur wireless signal is weak, place the ruter in several lcatins and test the signal strength t determine the ideal psitin. 2. Building materials can have a large impact n yur wireless signal. In an indr envirnment, try t psitin the wireless devices s that the signal passes thrugh less dense material such as dry wall. Dense materials like metal, slid wd, glass r even furniture may blck r degrade the signal. 19

23 3. Antenna rientatin can als have a large impact n yur wireless signal. Use the wireless adapter s site survey tl t determine the best antenna rientatin fr yur wireless devices. 4. Interference frm devices that prduce RF (radi frequency) nise can als impact yur signal. Psitin yur wireless devices away frm anything that generates RF nise, such as micrwaves, radis and baby mnitrs. Advanced wireless settings Wireless > Advanced These settings are advanced ptins that can be cnfigured t change advanced wireless bradcast specificatins. It is recmmended that these settings remain set t their default values unless yu are knwledgeable abut the effects f changing these values. Changing these settings incrrectly can degrade perfrmance. If pssible, upgrade wireless netwrk interfaces (such as wireless cards in cmputers) frm lder wireless standards t n. If a wirelessly netwrked device uses an lder standard, the perfrmance f the entire wireless netwrk may be slwer. If yu are still experiencing lw r n signal cnsider repsitining the wireless devices r installing additinal access pints. Beacn Interval A beacn is a management frame used in wireless netwrks that transmitted peridically t annunce the presence and prvide infrmatin abut the ruter s wireless netwrk. The interval is the amunt time between each beacn transmissin. Default Value:100 millisecnds (range: ) RTS Threshld The Request T Send (RTS) functin is part f the netwrking prtcl. A wireless device that needs t send data will send a RTS befre sending the data in questin. The destinatin wireless device will send a respnse called Clear t Send (CTS). The RTS Threshld defines the smallest data packet size allwed t initiate the RTS/CTS functin. Default Value: 2346 (range: ) 20

24 Fragmentatin Threshld Fragmentatin in wireless netwrks is the prcess f breaking dwn data cmmunicatins int smaller data packets in rder t imprve data efficiency when transferring r receiving data between wireless devices. The fragmentatin threshld defines the maximum size f the data packets that are brken dwn. Default Value: 2346 (range: 1500~2346, even numbers nly) DTIM Interval A Delivery Traffic Indicatin Message (DTIM) is an infrmatinal message that is sent as part f a beacn by an access pint (yur wireless ruter) t a wireless client (wireless device r cnnecting statin) in sleep mde t prvide an alert that data is awaiting delivery. The DTIM Interval (als called Data Beacn Rate) is the amunt f time between DTIM transmissins included in part f a beacn.
