The new models support your choice of operating systems for running AIX or Linux applications. The increased memory may allow performance enhancements for some applications and also enables you to run more memory-intensive applications in Linux and AIX environments; for example, scientific, commercial, database, and Web serving applications. The IBM eserver BladeCenter JS20 blade server Tx with low-profile handles in a BladeCenter T chassis is your key component for building your telecommunications blade configuration. The JS20 blade servers, in a BladeCenter or BladeCenter T chassis, offer advanced application serving for Linux (SUSE and Red Hat), AIX 5L V5.2, and AIX 5L V5.3 environments with performance, density, and scalability. At your command are two powerful PowerPC 970 processors, high-speed memory, dual Gigabit Ethernet connections, and comprehensive high-availability and systems management features. The JS GHz processor enhances performance for both Linux and AIX applications as part of an innovative economic approach to the deployment of large numbers of powerful servers. In the BladeCenter or BladeCenter T chassis, the servers require less space and fewer power resources than traditional rack-mounted servers. The JS20 4Tx model is designed with a power management capability to give you the maximum uptime possible for your systems. In short term extended thermal conditions, the Tx automatically reduces the frequency of the processor to maintain acceptable thermal levels. Refer to NEBS in the Operating environment section for additional details. Powerful blade-thin computing: The IBM eserver BladeCenter chassis and IBM eserver BladeCenter JS20 blade servers are key components to building your blade configuration. BladeCenter Management Module Use the management module in the BladeCenter to manage the BladeCenter and obtain vital system information about your installed JS20 blade servers. The management module communicates with the blade servers within the BladeCenter via an RS-485 intermanagement network. This network relays vital information about individual blade servers such as: Temperature Voltages Power supply status Memory status Fan status HDD status Error and status log You can receive the status and you can control all blade servers within the BladeCenter. You can shut down and restart any blade server from anywhere on the network to help save time and costs associated with travel to the actual installation. These manageability functions are provided through a self-contained Web page, creating an easy and familiar way for administrators to monitor, control, and maintain highly available BladeCenter installations. The Management Module communicates to the JS20 blades through serial-over-lan interface. Applications could be sensitive to processor frequency changes. For instance, frequency reductions could potentially impact benchmarking or applications/tools that depend on execution times for accounting, CPU utilization, or profiling. It is recommended that you check with your individual application vendors to see if there are any possible impacts and weigh the potential benefits and risks of Tx power management in the short term extended thermal NEBS environment before installing the system. Note: Short term refers to a period of not more than 96 consecutive hours and a total of not more than 15 days in one year. (This refers to a total of 360 hours in any given year, but no more than 15 occurrences during that one-year period.) Memory support The following memory options are supported with JS20 blade: IBM 512 MB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR RDIMM (73P2275) IBM 1 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR RDIMM (73P2276) IBM 2 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR RDIMM (25R8408) Rack installations The BladeCenter 7U rack-drawer enclosure and BladeCenter T 8U rack-drawer enclosure can be installed in a 19-inch rack cabinet designed for 28-inch deep devices, such as the NetBAY42 ER, NetBAY42 SR, NetBAY25 SR, or NetBAY11. If you choose not to use an IBM rack, the cabinet must: Meet the EIA -310-D standards for mounting flange and hole clearances with front to rear mounting of 699 mm (27.5 in) to 470 mm (18.5 in). Provide sufficient room in front of the forward EIA flange to allow for bezel attachment (the standard for 310-D suggests 49 mm (1.96 in) clearance). Provide adequate room at the rear of the rack, behind the rear flange, for cable management. The BladeCenter requires approximately 102 mm (4 in) in this space. Include perforated front and rear doors that do not prevent the flow of cool air into or out of the rack. Meet 37 lb/u weight handling capacity. Provide proper stabilization so that it does not become unstable when servers are pulled out for service

8 If the optional BladeCenter Acoustic Attenuation Module is installed, approximately 203 mm (8 in) of space should be left from the BladeCenter to the rear door. Power considerations BladeCenter enclosure (8677-3XX) contains two 2,000-watt 220V ac power modules. The BladeCenter enclosure (8677-2XX) contains two 1,800-watt 220 V ac power modules. These modules must be attached to a supported high-voltage PDU. These standard power modules support all the BladeCenter modules and blade bays 1 through 6 with power redundancy. When adding additional blade servers in bays 7 through 14, two additional 1,800-watt power supply modules must be installed. This option provides both power and redundancy to these blade bays. BladeCenter T enclosure (8720-1RX/8730-1RX) contains two 1,300-watt hot-swap power supplies. The BladeCenter T 1,300-watt dc Power Supply Module (90P3742) has two standard 4-lug dc terminals on the rear of the BladeCenter T chassis for customer attachment of dc power. On-site service: IBM On-site Repair (IOR), 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday excluding holidays, next-business-day response. IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. In those locations where on-site service is not available, the normal in-country service delivery is used. Call IBM at 800-IBM-SERV ( ), to assist with problem isolation for hardware to determine if warranty service is required. Telephone support may be subject to additional charges, even during the limited warranty period. International Warranty Service (IWS): International warranty service (IWS) is available during the warranty period to customers who travel or relocate to countries where their computer is sold and serviced by IBM or IBM resellers authorized to perform warranty service. Eligible IBM computers are identified by their four-digit machine type. You can obtain IWS through the method of service, such as CRU, depot, carry-in, or on-site, provided in the servicing country. Service methods and procedures vary by country, and some service or parts may not be available in all countries. Service centers in certain countries may not be able to service all models of a particular machine type. In addition, some countries may have fees and restrictions that apply at the time of service. To determine the eligibility of your computer and to view a list of countries where service is available, visit: warranty/warranty.vm For more information on IWS, refer to Services Announcement , dated September 25, Note: Due to the earth s magnetic field, CRT monitors are manufactured to work in northern, southern, and equatorial regions of the earth and may not produce a satisfactory image when moved between them. Any required adjustment (if possible) is not covered under IWS and may be subject to a chargeable action. The magnetic field does not affect flat-panel LCD monitors.
