Dallas, NC P: NC EXTENSION & COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION (ECA) GASTON COUNTY February 2018 Newsletter FEBRUARY MEETINGS ECA Monthly Member Meeting Thurs., February 1 st 10:00 11:30am Please remember we are still in need of a President Elect. Executive Board Meeting Thurs., February 8 th 9:30 11:30am All 2018 Executive board members are asked to attend this important meeting. Current ECA Bylaws and Standing Rules need to be reviewed and updated (as needed) for Please RSVP to Pam Bryson by Mon., February 1 st. NOMINATIONS FOR LEADER AND MEMBER OF THE YEAR During February, the Executive Board will be taking nominations for Gaston County ECA s 2017 Leader and Member of the Year. Any member can make a nomination by sending the nominee s name and a short written reason why that member should be nominated to Pam Bryson. Nominations will be accepted until March 1 st ; award selections will be made by the Executive Board BUILDING UPDATES Lots of changes have been made as a result of building renovations. Please note the following: Back entrance of building: remains as an Employee Only entrance. Please utilize the front door entrance, which has been updated to accommodate handicap accessibility. Ceramic room: new cabinets have been installed. ECA Liaison will work with the Ceramic Room Committee to organize and identify use of cabinets. ECA green safe: has been moved to the Project Room. Members who have signature cards listed for ECA s checking out will have direct access, along with the ECA Liaison. Filing cabinet in project room: will be used for ECA paperwork, including Executive Board and Committee forms, etc. This means you will no longer need to get forms and other paperwork from the ECA Liaison, creating a more efficient system for both staff and volunteers. Office of ECA Liaison: for safety and respect of our ECA Liaison, the office door will remain closed throughout each day. ECA members and visitors are requested to use the front window if you need assistance. For security, safety, and respect of our staff, please be aware that the office is not open to ECA members and guests. In the past, ECA members have removed things from the NC State University and N.C. You will make a set of place mats while learning quilting techniques like curves, angles, bindings, etc. Smart Winter Cooking with Local Foods: Wed., February 7th 6:00 7:30pm $10 (payment received by NC Cooperative Extension) Instructor: Linda J. This session will provide you with a fresh taste of winter flavors and recipes that s sure to help you eat smart and stay warm all winter long. Better Together Painting Class: Tues., February 6 th 5:30-9:00pm $7.00 (must register and pay in advance - check only, cash not accepted) Instructor: Pam Myers Register by February 1 st by contacting Come paint this pretty silhouette of two birds enjoying the scenery. You ll need: an 11x14 or 9x12 canvas, sponge, brushes (1-inch flat brush, 1/2-inch flat brush, liner brush) and paint (Americana Sapphire, Razzleberry, Baby Blue, Royal Purple, Black), and a water container. Making Paper Beads Class: Sat., February 10 th 9:30am-12:00pm $7.00 (must register and pay in advance - check only, cash not accepted) Instructor: Pam Davis Register by February 6 th by contacting Participants will learn to make paper beads that turn out like plastic beads. Great for making bracelets and necklaces. This is a great time to make something to wear for Valentines. Pillow Stuffing Workshop: Fri., February 9 th 10:00am 2:00pm Register by February 9 th by contacting (so that we can plan for lunch) In honor of Women's Heart Health month and Valentine's Day, we are filling heartshaped pillows for use with heart surgery patients at the hospital for one of our community service projects. Some people will stuff pillows, others will stitch them closed - all of us will enjoy fellowship and good conversation as we work. Soup and crackers will be available for lunch. The public as well as ECA members are welcome to help on this project. Movie & Dinner Night: Tues., February 20 th Dinner at 5:30pm Movie at 7:00pm Contact Teresa Weaver or Elena Wetmore for more information Please note this is always the 3 rd Tuesday of each month. 4 FEELING UNDER THE WEATHER? PLEASE, STAY AT HOME For the health of ECA members, staff, and visitors please stay home when you are sick or not feeling well. The majority of individuals who come to the Lucile Tatum Center have chronic illnesses and weakened immune systems. If you do come in sick, you may be asked to leave. Thanks for your help in keeping everyone well and healthy this holiday season DISTRICT ECA SCHOLARSHIP ($800) The District ECA scholarship application is now available at the Lucile Tatum and in your 2017 ECA yearbook. The submission deadline is Thursday, February 1 st. Students eligible to apply include: current high school seniors, adults, and currently enrolled college students GASTON ECA SCHOLARSHIP ($1000) Gaston County ECA is pleased to be offering 2 to 3 scholarships in May The submission deadline is Thursday, April 5 th. Students eligible to apply include: current high school seniors, adults, and currently enrolled college students. Scholarship applications are available online (gaston.ces.ncsu.edu) and at the Lucile Tatum Center. 5 OFFICE COVERAGE NEEDED Office coverage for Pam Bryson is needed for the following dates: February 5th, 7th, 12th, & 14th: 8:30-11:00am (Pam teaching Matter of Balance) February 15th: 9:45-11:30am (Pam attending Wellness Meeting) February 19th -23rd: all day (Pam attending training in Raleigh) INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY During inclement weather it sometimes becomes necessary to cancel activities and classes offered at the Lucile Tatum Center. All ECA club meetings, lifestyle classes or any other ECA activity scheduled at the Lucile Tatum Center will follow these guidelines during episodes of inclement weather: 1. All ECA meetings, classes and activities - including both morning and evening events - will be cancelled during inclement weather. 2. We will follow the Gaston County School System cancellation schedule for classes and activities. The decision to close schools or delay schedule is announced by 6:00am. 3. Pam Bryson will be responsible for updating the phone message system to reflect cancellations or delays in scheduled ECA activities. 4. During school cancellations: If the school system is closed during inclement weather, all ECA meetings, classes and activities will be cancelled. 5. During school delays in schedule: If the school system is on a delayed schedule, ECA activities not affected by the delay will continue as scheduled. If the ECA activity is scheduled prior to the beginning of the delayed school schedule these events will be cancelled. 6. When ECA activities are cancelled, it is the ECA club president s responsibility to notify members of the cancellation. The LTEHC director, Pam Bryson, will be responsible for working with workshop instructors to ensure that all participants are notified of delays/cancellations.
