1 Educational Technology Standards K 12 Goals & s with Checklists and Rubrics v. October 26, 2015 Educational Technology, Spokane Public Schools

2 INTENT The intent of teaching technology skills is not to produce a skilled typist, but rather to help the student become more efficient in using technology tools to enhance and support learning. Efficient keyboarding is essential for using word processing, database, desktop publishing, telecommunications, and multimedia. It is important that children learn proper manipulation of the keyboard to increase their proficiency and their motivation in the regular use of computer applications as part of the learning process. While keyboarding is a crucial component of using computers as an integrated learning tool, it is only one of many skills needed for 21 st Century learning. GOALS Students will develop the ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to locate, evaluate, use, create and share information. Students will develop the ability to understand and use information in multiple formats from a wide range of sources when it is presented via computers Students will develop the ability to read and interpret media, to reproduce data and images through digital manipulation, and to evaluate and apply new knowledge gained from digital environments. CONTENT Technology literacy lessons focus on teaching technical terminology, keyboarding and mouse skills and introduces the use of computer programs. In addition to the hands on use of computers, technology literacy also teaches students grade appropriate ways of researching information and making ethical choices when it comes to technology. ASSESSMENT Teachers can formatively or summatively assess student technology goals and targets using simple checklists. Each grade level has Goals and s that approach independent proficiency and are denoted in grade levels with the letter P. See the attached customizable Assessment Checklist where you can add goals or targets being assessed. For more anecdotal evidence, see the attached Assessment Stickies sheet. OSPI has created assessments for educational technology to integrate within core content areas science, math, health, English language arts, social studies and the arts.
