1. LIN101 LIN101 is a Serial Device Server, the main functin f the LIN101 is t netwrk-enable existing serial devices. Using the LIN101 yu can add an Ethernet prt practically t any serial device with RS232 interface. It is pssible t cmmunicate with any serial device frm any PC (r ther device) cnnected t the LAN. If the LAN has a direct cnnectin t the Internet, then the serial device is accessible frm anywhere in the wrld. 3 1.1 LIN101 usage There are three basic ways t cmmunicate with the LIN101: with a serial device cntrlled via the netwrk using an existing PC sftware, then yu can use the LIN101 t netwrk-enable this serial device and cmmunicate with it frm the PC thrugh ur Virtual Serial Prt Driver (VSPD). Virtual Serial Prts (VSPs) created by the driver are lgical COMs that behave like standard hardware COMs but in reality transparently rerute the data via the TCP/IP netwrk t the LIN101-enabled serial device. VSPs allw yu t cntinue using yur existing PC sftware withut any mdificatin. with a serial device and yu are creating a new PC sftware t cntrl it then yu can develp sftware that cmmunicates with the LIN101 directly (withut VSPD). The LIN101 transmits the data using industry-standard UDP/IP and TCP/IP cmmunicatins prtcls. it is pssible t create a virtual serial link ver the netwrk by using the LIN101-enabled serial device n ne side and the LIN101 Serial Device Server n the ther side. Netwrk Prgramming f the LIN101 can als prceed in the Nrmal Mde in parallel with the data ruting 4

This mde is used t prgram the LIN101 s functining parameters (Settings) via the serial prt 1.3 Status LED signals The LIN101 has tw pairs f leds that prvide a visual indicatin: LED1 and LED 2: LIN101 Status At startup in Nrmal Mde Green and red LEDs blink 3 times Setting errr (cannt enter the Nrmal Mde) Red LED blink Nrmal Mde active: Slave Ruting Mde Green LED cnstantly ON Nrmal Mde active: Master Ruting Mde (*) Destinatin IP-address nt reachable Green LED blink Destinatin IP-address reachable Green LED cnstantly ON Buffer verflw Green and red LEDs blinking cnstantly (*) The LIN101 is cnstantly sending pings t the Destinatin IP-address when in the Master Ruting Mde (nce in every 5 secnds). 6 2. Operatin in Nrmal Mde The main functin f the LIN101 is t rute the data between its Ethernet and serial prts. Ruting means that the data received int the serial prt is sent ut via the Ethernet prt and vise versa. Data ruting is effected thrugh tw ruting buffers, ne fr each ruting directin. The LIN101 perfrms the ruting in the Nrmal Mde f peratin. A number f user-prgrammable Settings and Parameters define the way the LIN101 wrks in the Nrmal Mde. 2.1 Ethernet prt and netwrk cmmunicatins The Ethernet prt f the LIN101 is f 10BaseT type. Just like any ther Ethernet device each LIN101 has a unique Ethernet (MAC) Address and must be assigned a valid IP-address t functin prperly n the netwrk. Lgically, the LIN101 s netwrk interface has tw prts. A user-definable Data Prt is used t exchange the data between the LIN101 and ther statins n the netwrk. Anther prt called Cmmand Prt has a fixed number (FFFF Hex) and is used t send prgramming cmmands t the LIN101 s ver the netwrk. The LIN101 can exchange data with remte statins using the UDP/IP r TCP/IP transprt prtcls as defined by the Transprt Prtcl Setting. Depending n the Ruting Mde Setting the LIN101 can act as a netwrk Slave r Master (see Slave and Master ruting mdes fr details). Other netwrk-related settings include Destinatin IP-address, Destinatin Data Prt Number, Gateway IP-address, Netmask, and Cnnectin Timeut. 2.2 Serial cmunicatins The serial prt f the LIN101 supprts TX, RX, CTS, and RTS signals and can wrk at baudrates up t In the Nrmal Mde the serial prt transmits the data between the LIN101 and attached serial device (micrcntrller). In the Serial Prgramming Mde the prt is used t prgram the LIN101 s Settings. Settings that define the peratin f the serial prt include the Baudrate (150~115200bps), Parity (nne, even, r dd), Bits Per Byte (7 r 8), and Flw Cntrl (nne r CTS/RTS). Each f these Settings has a matching Parameter that verrides the value f a crrespnding Setting. 2.3 Ruting buffers The data between the Ethernet prt and the serial prt is ruted via tw independent 255-byte buffers, ne fr each ruting directin. Buffers are necessary because the Ethernet and the serial prt perate at different speeds and in different ways. Ethernet carries the data in packets (i.e. grups f data), while the serial prt sends and receives a serial stream where each data byte is independent. Here is hw the LIN101 transfrms the Ethernet packets int the serial stream and back: Ethernet serial data ruting is simple: the LIN101 utputs the cntents f arriving Ethernet data packets byte by byte via the serial prt. The LIN101 des nt check f filter the cntents f data being ruted in the Ethernet -> serial directin Serial Ethernet ruting requires gruping arriving serial data int packets and is mre cmplicated. Several Settings define exactly what serial data is accepted int the buffer and when and hw this data is cmbined int an Ethernet packet and sent ut. Detailed infrmatin n the subject can be fund in Serial -> Ethernet data ruting. 6
3 Slave and Master ruting mdes The LIN101 rutes the data in ne f tw mdes as defined by the Ruting Mde Setting: In the Slave Ruting Mde the LIN101 never sends any data transmissin in the serial prt -> Ethernet directin befre it receives sme data frm the remte statin first (i.e. the data in the Ethernet -> serial directin). The serial data received int the LIN101 s serial prt befre the remte statin cntacts the LIN101 is discarded. In the Slave Mde the LIN101 will wrk with any statin n the netwrk that cntacts it In the Master Ruting Mde the LIN101 des nt wait fr the remte statin t send the data first and rutes the data in the serial -> Ethernet directin as sn as there is a data t be sent. The data is always sent t a specific destinatin (as defined by the Destinatin IP-address and Destinatin Data Prt Number Settings f the LIN101). Als, the LIN101 nly accepts the data sent frm the remte statin whse IP-address matches the ne set in the Destinatin IP-address. The LIN101 will discard the data sent frm any ther IP. Nte, that data prt number f the sender is nt verified s the data can be sent frm any prt. 3.1 Using Slave and Master Ruting Mdes Use the Slave Ruting Mde t netwrk-enable serial devices that never send ut the data by themselves but instead are plled fr data frm the PC. Examples f such devices are time recrders, access cntrl panels and ther hardware terminals. Use the Master Ruting Mde t netwrk-enable serial devices that send ut the data spntaneusly i.e. withut waiting fr the request frm PC. Als use the Master Ruting Mde in cases when the serial data must flw independently in bth directins (i.e. Ethernet -> serial and serial -> Ethernet). This is the case, fr instance, when yu are creating a netwrk mdem that must pass the data in bth directins simultaneusly. 3.2 Required netwrk settings fr the Slave and Master Ruting Mdes In the Slave Ruting Mde the LIN101 nly respnds t ther statins n the netwrk. When the LIN101 receives the data frm remte statin it memrizes this statin s IP-address and data prt number. When ruting the data in the serial -> Ethernet directin the LIN101 will reply t this IP-address and data prt number. Therefre, the nly netwrk settings that must be set in the Slave Ruting Mde are the LIN101 s wn IP-address and the Data Prt Number. This is true even if there is a ruter between the remte statin and the LIN101. Yu dn t have t set the Netmask and Gateway IP when using the LIN101 in the Slave Ruting Mde; In the Master Ruting Mde the LIN101 needs t be able t send the data t a predefined remte statin at any time. This means that nt nly LIN101 s wn IP-address and Data Prt Number must be set but als the Destinatin IPaddress and the Destinatin Data Prt Number. If the destinatin remte statin and the LIN101 are residing in different netwrk segments then the Netmask and Gateway IP-address must als be set. 3.3 Slave and Master ruting mdes vs. UDP/IP and TCP/IP transprt prtcls UDP/IP and TCP/IP prvide cmpletely different data transmissin s LIN101s behavir in the Slave and Master Ruting Mdes is slightly different under UDP/IP and TCP/IP Transprt Prtcls. UDP/IP Transprt Prtcl Slave Ruting Mde. All UDP data packets arriving frm any remte statin and addressed t the Data Prt f the LIN101 are ruted t the serial prt. Fr the serial -> Ethernet directin the LIN101 always sends the data t the IP-address and the prt number that were received in the last (latest) UDP packet. Once the LIN101 receives a UDP packet frm a different statin it will start sending all its serial -> Ethernet data t this new statin. After pwer up and befre the LIN101 receives the first UDP data packet the LIN101 desn t have any IP-address and prt number t send the data t s all the data received int the LIN101 s serial prt is simply discarded. Master Ruting Mde. The LIN101 nly accepts and rutes t the serial prt the data packets that have riginated frm the remte statin whse IP-address matches the ne defined by the Destinatin IP-address Setting. Surce data prt number need nt match the ne defined by the Destinatin Data Prt Number Setting 7
s the packet can be sent frm any prt. Whenever the LIN101 has the data t transmit in the serial -> Ethernet directin it will send the data t the Destinatin IP-address and Destinatin Data Prt Number. The packet will be sent t the Destinatin Data Prt Number even if the packet received by the LIN101 frm the remte statin riginated at a different prt. Therefre, it pssible that the LIN101 will be receiving the data frm ne prt but sending it t anther prt! TCP/IP Transprt Prtcl Slave Ruting Mde. The LIN101 will accept an incming TCP cnnectin frm any statin n the netwrk. The LIN101 will nt attempt t establish a cnnectin with a remte statin by itself even it the LIN101 has the data t transmit in the serial -> Ethernet directin. Once the remte statin has established the cnnectin the data can flw independently in either directin. Pending serial -> Ethernet data received by the LIN101 prir t the TCP cnnectin establishment is discarded when the cnnectin is established. Master Ruting Mde. The LIN101 will bth accept an incming TCP/IP cnnectin and attempt t establish a cnnectin with the remte statin by itself depending n which side sends that data first- remte statin r attached serial device. Incming TCP cnnectin will nly be accepted frm a statin whse IP-address matches the ne defined by the Destinatin IP-address Setting f the LIN101. Surce prt number need nt match the ne defined by the Destinatin Data Prt Number Setting s the cnnectin can be initiated frm any prt. When the LIN101 needs t initiate a TCP/IP cnnectin the it will attempt t cnnect t the Destinatin IP-address and Destinatin Data Prt Number. Once the cnnectin has been established the data can flw independently in either directin. Nte that unlike in case f UDP/IP there will never be a situatin when the LIN101 receives the data frm ne prt but sends the data t anther prt. Once the TCP/IP cnnectin has been established bth sides exchange the data using a single prt n each side. 3.4 Cnnectins with mre than tw ndes In many real-life situatins it is ften necessary t have several PCs (netwrk statins) access the same serial device thrugh the LIN101 ( many clients t ne data surce ) r have many serial devices (each cnnected t the netwrk via its wn LIN101) send the data t a single PC ( many data surces t ne client ). Many clients t ne data surce peratin is achieved by using the LIN101 in the Slave Ruting Mde. The LIN101 will reply t any sender in this mde, s any statin will be able t access the hst serial device with the LIN101 inside. UDP/IP Transprt Prtcl shuld nt be used if there is a chance that several different clients will send the requests t the same LIN101/serial device at the same time. Data mix up will result n the serial side and the LIN101 wn t be able t rute the data back t the respective sender f each cmmand crrectly. TCP/IP Transprt Prtcl can be used safely since when ne client is already cnnected t the LIN101 thers wn t be able t gain access t the same LIN101 until this client discnnects. T prevent ne client frm hlding the TCP/IP cnnectin t the LIN101 indefinitely there is a Cnnectin Timeut Setting that defines after hw lng the LIN101 will abrt the cnnectin in case there is n data transfer in any directin. Many data surces t ne client peratin is achieved by using the LIN101 in the Master Ruting Mde. In this mde the LIN101 will rute all its serial -> Ethernet data t the Destinatin IP-address and Destinatin Data Prt Number. Any number f LIN101s can be set t send the data t the same destinatin. UDP/IP Transprt Prtcl can be used in this arrangement but yu must make sure that each serial data blck utput by the serial device is sent ut in a single UDP packet. Ptential data mix up can ccur n the receiving end if the serial data blck is transmitted in several UDP packets and several LIN101 are sending data at the same time. The upside f using the UDP/IP is that yu will nly need t maintain ne listening scket n the receiving end t get the data frm all data surces (unless, f curse, yu want t distinguish between the data surces). Several LIN101 s Settings define hw the incming serial data is cmbined int Ethernet packets s yu can make sure that the serial data blck frm is nt split int several packets (see serial -> Ethernet data ruting fr details). TCP/IP Transprt Prtcl can be used safely but yu will have t maintain a separate scket n the receiving end fr every data surce sending the data. 4 Serial t Ethernet data ruting 8
The LIN101 prvides a way t chse which incming serial data is accepted int the serial -> Ethernet buffer, hw this data is cmbined int Ethernet packets and when it is sent ut via the Ethernet prt. The LIN101 treats all incming serial data as a sequence f data blcks. The term data blck here des nt mean that the LIN101 is nly capable f wrking with a structured serial data. An abslutely randm serial stream can als be prcessed- as ne cntinuus infinite serial data blck. Serial data blcks begin when a start cnditin is detected and end when a stp cnditin is detected. After the start cnditin is detected the LIN101 begins recrding the incming serial data int the serial -> Ethernet buffer. Thus, the start cnditin is said t pen the serial data blck. When the stp cnditin is detected the LIN101 seizes recrding the data int the buffer and attempts t send ut all the data accumulated in the buffer via the Ethernet prt. Therefre, the stp cnditin clses the serial data blck. The inter-blck serial data i.e. the data received after the stp cnditin is detected and befre the next start cnditin is detected is discarded. Besides the start and stp cnditins there is als a break cnditin. When the break cnditin is detected the LIN101 desn t clse the serial data blck (i.e. it cntinues recrding subsequent serial data int the serial -> Ethernet buffer) but sends ut the data already accumulated in the buffer thrugh the Ethernet prt. Break cnditins prvide a way t subdivide large serial data blcks. 4.1 Start cnditins The Start On Any Character Setting defines if the LIN101 recgnizes any character received int the serial prt as a start cnditin r requires a predefined Start Character t pen the serial data blck. When Start On Any Character is set t yes the LIN101 will accept any character fllwing the end f the previus serial data blck as the beginning f the next blck. When Start On Any Character is set t n the LIN101 will nly pen the serial data blck when ne f the preset Start Characters is received. Up t three different Start Characters can be defined. Start Characters received after the serial data blck has been pened are treated as nrmal characters and d nt restart the serial data blck. 4.2 Stp cnditins Up t three different Stp Characters can be defined t clse the serial data blck. Once ne f the preset Stp Characters is detected the LIN101 clses the serial data blck and attempts t send ut the cntents f the serial -> Ethernet buffer via the Ethernet prt. All subsequent serial data is ignred until the next start cnditin is met. The use f Start Characters and Stp Characters assumes that these characters will nt be encuntered in the data blck bdy. Sme cmmunicatins prtcls use checksums (r ther frms f data integrity verificatin). Checksum can ptentially take any value and ccasinally match the ASCII cdes f the Stp Characters. T avid pssible cnfusin sme cmmunicatins prtcls put the checksum bytes behind the Stp Characters. The LIN101 deals with this by allwing t define a Number Of Pst-characters fr each enabled Stp Character. Fr example, if the Number Of Pst-characters fr a certain Stp Character is set t 2 then the LIN101 will additinally receive and cunt as belnging t the current serial data blck 2 bytes f data after this Stp Character has been encuntered. 4.3 Break cnditins The Maximum Data Length Setting defines the maximum number f data bytes in the serial -> Ethernet buffer. (can be set between 32 and 255). Once this number is reached the LIN101 attempts t send ut the cntents f the buffer via the Ethernet prt. This Setting nly wrks when the UDP/IP Transprt Prtcl is selected. This is because TCP/IP has its wn way t determine what size f data chunks is best fr transmissin ver the netwrk. The Maximum Intercharacter Delay Setting defines the maximum time gap between the arrival f tw cnsecutive serial characters int the serial prt (can be defined in 10ms increments between 10ms and 2.55 sec). Once this time is exceeded the LIN101 attempt t send ut the cntents f the serial -> Ethernet buffer via the Ethernet prt. Setting the maximum Intercharacter Delay t 0 disables the functin. 4.4 Default cnfiguratin The default cnfiguratin is the fllw: Start On Any Character n Stp Characters are defined Maximum Intercharacter Delay is 10 ms Maximum Data Length is 255 byte (UDP nly). 9
As a result the very first byte received int the serial prt is regarded as a beginning f the serial data blck that never ends. Once there amunt f data in the serial -> Ethernet buffer reaches the limit r there is a gap in the serial transmissin the LIN101 cmbines all serial data it has already received and sends it ut. Practice shws that this arrangement wrks very well nt nly fr a randm data flw but als fr structured data. 4.5 Buffer-related issues When using the LIN101 be careful nt t verflw its internal Ethernet -> serial and serial -> Ethernet buffers. The verflw can ccur because f the difference in receive/transmissin speeds n the Ethernet and the serial sides f the LIN101 (Red Status LED blinks mmentarily when verflw happens). In additin, the internal receiving buffer f the hst serial device can ptentially verflw if the LIN101 utputs the serial data t fast. Ethernet -> Serial buffer UDP/IP Transprt Prtcl. The Ethernet -> serial buffer can easily verflw because the Ethernet is much faster than the serial prt and UDP/IP has n inbuilt prtectin against buffer verflws. UDP/IP shuld nt be used t send cntinuus data flw and is nly suitable fr sending shrt data blcks that can fit in the buffer. TCP/IP Transprt Prtcl has an inbuilt prtectin frm buffer verflwing. Yu can safely send the data f any size. Serial -> Ethernet buffer the nly way t prtect the buffer is t enable the RTS/CTS Flw Cntrl in the LIN101 and n the hst serial device. This way the LIN101 will be able t signal the hst serial device t stp transmitting the data nce the buffer becmes full. Internal receiving buffer f the hst serial device. this buffer can als be prtected by using the RTS/CTS t regulate the exchange f data between the LIN101 and the serial device. Nte: using TCP/IP and RTS/CTS is the mst reliable way f transmitting data thrugh the LIN101 10
5. LIN101 Prgramming The peratin f the LIN101 in the Nrmal Mde is cntrlled by a number f user-definable Settings and Parameters: Settings define the permanent functinality f the LIN101. Settings are stred in the nn-vlatile memry and are preserved even when the LIN101 is switched ff. After having been changed new Setting values take effect nly after the LIN101 is restarted (rebted) Parameters are temprary verrides fr certain Settings. Changing Parameters have an immediate effect n the LIN101 peratin. Parameters are preserved nly until the LIN101 is switched ff r restarted. The LIN101 can be prgrammed in tw different ways: Thrugh the serial prt f the LIN101 in a Serial Prgramming Mde Over the netwrk using UDP packets sent t a cmmand prt (FFFF Hex). This methd is called Netwrk Prgramming There are several differences between the Serial Prgramming Mde and the Netwrk Prgramming: Serial Prgramming Mde is a separate mde f peratin. The LIN101 is nt perfrming its data ruting functin when in the Serial Prgramming Mde. In cntrast the Netwrk Prgramming is nt a separate mde f peratin but a methd f prgramming. Netwrk Prgramming can prceed in parallel with the nrmal peratin f the LIN101. Certain cmmands can nly be executed thrugh the netwrk. Sme cmmands have different result when executed in the Serial Prgramming Mde and thrugh the netwrk (Initialize cmmand) Serial Prgramming Mde can always be entered, even when the LIN101 is nt prperly setup and needs t be Initialized. Netwrk Prgramming can nly be used when the LIN101 is already functinal. 5.1 LIN101 Prgramming using DST (Device Server Tlkit) This sftware allws t handle many LIN101 cnnected in a Ethernet PC netwrk. It creates Virtual Serial COMs n the PC that can be used as harware installed COMs. 5.2 Prgramming via RS232 The Device Server Manager is a DST functin taht allws t cnfigure all LIN101 netwrk settings r mdify them by a PC serial prt r thrugh the netwrk LIN101 prgramming can be dne in a fllwing manners: by PC serial cmmunicatin prt aut-discvery LIN101 cnnected in the netwrk chsing a LIN101 frm a predefined list In the fllwing example the LIN101 is prgrammed via RS232, the LIN101 will be cnnected in the netwrk by HUB and its serial prt will exchange data with a serial device at 9600 bit/sec. The LIN101 serial prt must be cnnected t PC serial prt with a crss-cable as fllw: PC side (Tx) 3 (Rx) 2 (GND) 5 (CTS) 8 (RTS) 7 LIN101 side 2 (Rx) 3 (Tx) 5 (GND) 7 (RTS) 8 (CTS) Restart LIN101 and push the SETUP buttn n the bttm side (LIN101 status leds blink) Nw execute the DS Manager, the fllwing windw will be displayed 11
Select the PC serial cmmunicatin prt cnnected t the LIN
Netwrk settings definitin. In this example the Slave Ruting Mde is selected and the cnnectin timeut is disabled, in this case the applicatin can cntrl the serial device indefinitely. 13
N Start and Stp cnditin are defined, then the TCP packet is cmpleted after the 20 ms timeut as defined. 14
Attached device serial prt parameters: All defined parameters are nw sent t the LIN101, and It is pssible t cnnect the LIN101 between the HUB and serial device. Creatin f a Virtual COM. Execute the Virtual Serial Prt Manager functin t create a virtual COM n the PC 15
