5. RS-232 Settings (ES-246/ES-257/ES-701/ES- 279/ES-357/ES-020/ES-446/ES-457) The RS-232 Standard The RS-232 standard was intrduced in 1962, it is nw widely established. RS-232 is a slw speed, shrt distance, single ended transmissin system (i.e. nly ne wire per signal). Typical RS-232 maximum cable length is 50 feet. 9 Pin D Serial Prt RS-232 Cables T cnnect t the RS-232 Serial Prt yu will need a cable terminating in a 9 way female D cnnectr. It is sund practice t use cables with screws fitted that will allw yu t fasten the cable securely t the PC card. In general, yu will need t make up a "crss-ver" cable t crrectly interface the PC t the RS-232 prt f anther cmputer r device. Prvided yu have the pin uts and handshake requirements f bth sides f yur RS-232 cnnectin, the crss ver cable becmes a matter f cmmn sense. The crss-ver cable is simply t ensure that the right signals ging ut f ne RS-232 prt g int the apprpriate lines f the ther RS-232 prt. 9 Pin D serial prt cnnectins t anther PC ES Range Prduct Manual V3.5 Cpyright Brainbxes Ltd Page 18 f 65

Suppse we want t cnnect the Brainbxes Serial Prt t the serial prt f anther PC. Cnnect the earth lines. Line 5 f Serial Prt 2, t lines 1 & 7 f the ther PC. This gives the tw devices a cmmn earth level. Cnnect the Transmit and Receive lines tgether. Line 3, TXD, Prt 2 ges t line 3, RXD, f the ther PC. Line 2, RXD, Prt 2 ges t line 2, TXD, f the ther PC. This allws each t receive the data transmitted by the ther. Cnnect the Prt 2 DTR line, pin 4 t the ther PC DCD, pin 8 and CTS, pin 5, lines. Als, cnnect up the ther PC DTR line, pin 20 t the Prt 2 DCD, pin 1 and CTS, pin 8, lines. This allws the receiving device t signal when it can n lnger accept data. The receiving device sets DTR false when it is unable t receive any mre data. The sending device reads DTR n its CTS and DCD pins. It shuld stp sending when CTS ges false. Cnnect the Prt 2 RTS line, pin 7, t the ther PC DSR line, pin 6. Als, cnnect the ther PC RTS line, pin 4, t the Prt 2 DSR line, pin 6. This RTS line is used t let the ther device knw that it is ready fr data exchange. ES Range Prduct Manual V3.5 Cpyright Brainbxes Ltd Page 19 f 65

6. RS-422/485 Settings (ES-320/ES-313/ES-346/ES- 842/ES-357/ES-031/ES-042/ES-420/ES-413) The factry default setting fr the ES devices is RS-422 full duplex. DTR/DSR Handshaking is nt available n 422/485 prts. The RS-485 standard talks abut the differential pair as Data A and Data B but line driver chip manufacturers use the labels Data+ and Data-. Data A is the inverting pin Data- and Data B is the nn-inverting pin Data+ If yu can t get the cnnectin t wrk it may be because yu have mistakenly cnnected the lines the wrng way rund. The RS-422 Standard The RS-422 standard defines a serial cmmunicatins standard. RS-422 is a high speed and/r lng distance data transmissin. Each signal is carried by a pair f wires and is thus a differential data transmissin system. Over distances up t 40 feet the maximum data rate is 10 Megabits per secnd, and fr distances up t 4000 feet the maximum data rate is 100 Kilbytes per secnd. A 120-Ohm resistr shuld be used t terminate the receiving end f the line. It is generally used between ne transmitter receiver pair t ONLY ne ther transmitter receiver pair, but each utput can drive up t 10 receivers. RS-422 Standard -1 Driver up t 10 Receivers Line Length Max Data Rate 40 Feet = 12m 10 Mbits/sec 400 Feet = 122m 1 Mbits/sec 4000 Feet = 1219m 100 Kbits/sec RS-422 Operatin Generally, in RS-422 systems all 8 signal lines frm the 9 pin D cnnectr participate in the data transfer sequence, thus 4 twisted pair cables are used. One twisted pair carries the TXD data utwards, ne pair brings the RXD data inward, anther pair carries the RTS handshake utwards and the furth pair brings the CTS handshake inwards. There is n need t carry the grund frm ne device t anther. This RS-422 arrangement allws data t be transmitted and received simultaneusly since each signal has its wn data cable pair. In additin, the receiver can set RTS true s telling the transmitter n its CTS input that the receiver is ready t accept data. In this way, n data will ever be transmitted when the receiver is unable t accept it, due t a full input buffer etc. And s n data will be lst. RS-422 Full Duplex Mde This mde is generally used between ne transmitter / receiver t nly ne ther transmitter / receiver, but it is pssible fr each utput t drive up t 10 receivers. Generally, in RS-422 systems, all 8 signal lines frm the 9 pin D cnnectr r terminal blck participate in the data transfer sequence. Thus 4 twisted pair cables are used. One twisted pair carries the TXD data utwards, ne pair brings the RXD data inward, anther pair carries the RTS handshaking signal utwards, and the furth pair brings the CTS handshaking signal inwards. There is n need t carry the grund frm ne device t anther. ES Range Prduct Manual V3.5 Cpyright Brainbxes Ltd Page 20 f 65

This mde is generally used between ne transmitter / receiver t nly ne ther transmitter / receiver, but it is pssible fr each utput t drive up t 10 receivers. RS-485 Standard The RS-485 standard is similar t the RS-422 standard upn which it is based. The main difference is that up t 32 transmitter / receiver pairs may be present n the line at ne time. Generally nt all the lines available n the 9 pin D cnnectr r terminal blck are used fr RS-485 systems. The RTS+/- and CTS+/- lines, thugh driven by the device, are usually nt cnnected. In tw wire Half-Duplex cnfiguratin, the TXD+ line is cnnected t RXD+, whilst the TXD- line is cnnected t RXD-. Only ne pair f twisted wire cable is used in RS-485 Half Duplex cmmunicatin. RS-485 Standard - Up t 32 Driver/Receiver Pairs Line Length Max Data Rate 40 Feet = 12m 10 Mbits/sec 400 Feet = 122m 1 Mbits/sec 4000 Feet = 1219m 100 Kbits/sec RS-485 Operatin The RS-485 standard is intended fr up t 32 driver receiver pairs n the bus. The line drivers used in the RS-422/485 card are designed t wrk crrectly in bth RS-422 and RS-485 systems. The main difference therefre is in hw the system is implemented. Thugh the card uses a 9 pin D cnnectr, in general, nt all the lines are used fr RS-485 systems. The RTS+/- and CTS+/- lines, thugh driven by the card, are usually nt cnnected. In tw wire, Half-Duplex cnfiguratins the TXD+ line is cnnected t the RXD+ whilst the TXD- line is cnnected t the RXD-, nly ne pair f twisted wire cable is used in RS-485 Half Duplex cmmunicatins. The hardware handshaking perfrmed by the CTS+/- and RTS+/- lines in RS-422 systems are handled by a sftware prtcl in RS-485 systems. In situatins where mre than ne device may transmit data n the shared data line, each cards RTS line is used as a gating signal t enable the TXD driver nly when that card needs t transmit data. This mechanism prevents bus cntentin caused by multiple transmitters hlding the line in ppsing states. Our cards have a facility which autmatically gates the RTS line, thus enabling the transmitter independently f any sftware. The three wiring schemes given described belw are: - 1. RS-485 One Talker Many Listeners (HALF DUPLEX) 2. RS-485 Many Talkers Many Listeners (HALF DUPLEX.) 3. RS-485 Many Talkers Many Listeners (FULL DUPLEX.) ES Range Prduct Manual V3.5 Cpyright Brainbxes Ltd Page 21 f 65

RS-485 One Talker - Many Listeners, Half Duplex. There are several schemes fr cnnecting RS-485 devices depending n the characteristics f the system. In many cases there will be nly ne device, which can transmit, data and all the thers simply listen t it. This scheme is used fr theatrical lighting intensity cntrl in the DMX512 standard. This is shwn belw. There is NO multiplexing f the TXD and RXD lines. Data is nly flwing ne way, frm PC utwards, and is thus a Half-Duplex cnfiguratin; nly ne twisted pair cable is needed. Nte: The Receiver end f MAIN line terminated in characteristic impedance by ONBOARD resistr netwrks stubs ff the main nt terminated. In the abve scheme, ne RS-485 device is talk nly, it transmits data, but it des nt receive any. The ther RS-485 devices are received nly; they d nt transmit any data at all. RS-485 Many Talkers - Many Listeners, Half Duplex. Anther ppular RS-485 layut is fr multiple talkers and multiple listeners. This is shwn belw. This is als knwn as "party line" transmissin. It is imperative t have sme methd f preventing tw devices trying t drive the data lines at the same time. The nrmal methd is t use the RTS line as a talk enable. The RTS line shuld g true immediately prir t the data transmissin and g false immediately after the last byte in the stream is sent. Nte: BOTH ends f MAIN line terminated in characteristic impedance, stubs ff main line nt impedance, since bth ends receive. The twisted pair ends are wired t bth RXD+ & TXD+ and RXD- & TXD- at each RS-485 device! RS-485 Many Talkers - Many Listeners, Full Duplex. The RS-485 many talkers, many listeners, Full Duplex system can be used when all the RS-485 devices have separate Transmit and Receive channels. There is NO multiplexing f the TXD and RXD signals n the same device. This system is especially useful when there is n flw cntrl available n the PC, usually due t the use f a third party cmmunicatins prgram that prevents the use f the RTS signal as a "transmit enable" cntrl. It can be used in the fllwing situatins:- a) The PC is cnnected t nly ONE RS-485 device. b) The PC is cmmunicating with several RS-485 devices that are each able t recgnize and respnd t their wn unique address. The RS-485 devices nly drive their TXD lines when they are ES Range Prduct Manual V3.5 Cpyright Brainbxes Ltd Page 22 f 65

respnding t requests frm the PC t send data. In effect, the RS-485 device s address and the cmmand it receives is used t cntrl access t the devices TXD channel. This is a Full Duplex system. Tw twisted pair cables are required. One twisted pair, is the PC s TXD channel, it carries the data sent frm the PC s TXD utputs t the RXD inputs f each f the RS-485 devices. The secnd twisted pair, is the Devices TXD channel, it carries the data sent frm each f the devices TXD utputs t the RXD inputs f the PC. The advantages f this system are great, since n new cmmunicatins, sftware is needed, and the PC can talk and listen at the same time. In effect, the handshaking is perfrmed by the intelligence f the RS-485 devices attached t the PC. When wired as belw, the PC can transmit data at any time and all the RS-485 devices #1 t #n simultaneusly receive it. Only ne f the RS-485 devices may talk, i.e. transmit data, at any ne time. Each RS-485 device recgnizes cmmands and data addressed t it; it nly talks when the PC cmmands it t d s. When the RS-485 device receives the cmmand t talk frm the PC, it gates its TXD drivers n, sends the data dwn the device TXD channel, and disables its TXD drivers. The ther RS-485 devices remain in the receive nly mde when they are nt being addressed, they d nt transmit any data at all. RS-485 Half Duplex Mde (ES-313, ES-320, ES-346, ES-842, ES-420 & ES-413 nly) Fr half-duplex peratin, the transmit and receive lines f the prt need t be cnnected tgether making it a 2 wire system. This can be dne by fitting the HD+ and HD- jumpers nt the headers inside the ES device bx. Half-duplex links usually need biasing resistrs fitted at sme pint n the link. These resistrs are used t hld the signal lines in a knwn state when the transmitters are ff. If these resistrs aren t used it is likely that randm data will be received when n transmitter is turned n. This is because f nise which is picked up alng the cable which causes the lines t flat t unknwn states. The B+ resistr pulls the + line up t 3V3 and the B- resistr pulls the ther line dwn t grund. It desn't matter which device n the link has them, as lng as ne f them des. Biasing resistrs can be cnnected by fitting the B+ and B- jumpers nt the headers n the ES device PCB. The T jumper cnnects in a terminatin resistr. Terminatin resistrs are used n the end devices in the link t absrb the signal and stp eches f the data being reflected back nt the transmissin line. Fr pint-t-pint links (tw devices linked), this shuld be fitted fr bth devices. 32 9. Advanced Cnfiguratin ES devices stre the device settings inside the device. When yu access the webpage it gets these settings frm the device. When yu access the driver it gets the settings frm the device t. If yu have Bst.LAN clsed and change a setting n the webpage, the device driver will nt knw that the settings have been changed n the webpage until Bst.LAN is pened. When Bst.LAN first pens it will update the settings f any installed devices. Therefre yu need t pen Bst.LAN manager after changing a setting n the webpage in rder fr the driver t use this new setting. IP Addressing The IP settings can be easily changed by clicking the Change link available in the Device Inf sectin n the left hand panel f Bst.LAN Manager. This will bring up the fllwing dialgue bx. As mentined in the Features sectin f this manual, the ES device is shipped in DHCP Mde. On cnnecting t the netwrk, the device autmatically checks if it is cnnected t a DHCP Server. 34 Fr example, this will enable yu t frce baud rates that yur applicatin des nt allw yu t select. This can be useful fr interfacing t equipment which uses higher baud rates r unusual baud rates, which yur applicatin des nt supprt. In a case where yu want t use hardware handshaking, but yur applicatin is nt capable, yu can select CTS Always True Hardware state ignred and chse t Override it. NB with the use f Override Settings, yu need t ensure that the equipment yu are cnnecting t be setup t match the cmmunicatins settings yu are frcing. CTS / DSR Always True CTS and DSR are incming hardware handshaking lines. This means they receive signals frm the cnnected device which tell the Ethernet t Serial device when it is and isn t OK t send data. Smetimes these signals may want t be ignred. By frcing CTS r DSR True, the Ethernet t Serial device will ignre thse signals and always send data. These settings are especially helpful when CTS and DSR are nt physically cnnected (such as in a 3 wire setup) and it is nt acceptable fr the data flw t stp and start due t arbitrary variances n the uncnnected signal lines. NB: Sme ES devices d nt supprt RTS/CTS r DTR/DSR handshaking and as a result, CTS Always true r DSR Always true will be enabled by default. Please check the prduct datasheet fr yur device t see what hardware handshaking is available. Changing yur COM label 1. Transmissin Interval The transmissin interval can be set via the web cnfiguratin page. The factry default fr the Transmissin Interval is set t 0. With the transmissin interval set t 0 millisecnds, the incming data is transmitted straight away, in small bytes which cause a lt f netwrk traffic and high CPU usage n the PC receiving the data. When there is a transmissin interval set, there is a delay n sending the data. The first byte f data that cmes in is sent immediately but after this n further data is sent until the transmissin interval time has passed. The ES device then accumulates any further bytes f data and then sends them all tgether in ne large chunk after the transmissin interval, reducing netwrk traffic and CPU usage.
