6 Working on your computer 1 Sfety instructions Use the following sfety guidelines to protect your computer from potentil dmge nd to ensure your personl sfety. Unless otherwise noted, ech procedure included in this document ssumes tht the following conditions exist: You hve red the sfety informtion tht shipped with your computer. A component cn e replced or, if purchsed seprtely, instlled y performing the removl procedure in the reverse order. WARNING: Disconnect ll power sources efore opening the computer cover or pnels. After you finish working inside the computer, replce ll covers, pnels, nd screws efore connecting to the power source. WARNING: Before working inside your computer, red the sfety informtion tht shipped with your computer. For dditionl sfety est prctices informtion, see the Regultory Complince Homepge t CAUTION: Mny repirs my only e done y certified service technicin. You should only perform trouleshooting nd simple repirs s uthorized in your product documenttion, or s directed y the online or telephone service nd support tem. CAUTION: To void electrosttic dischrge, ground yourself y using wrist grounding strp or y periodiclly touching n unpinted metl surfce tht is grounded to ground yourself efore you touch the computer to perform ny disssemly tsks. CAUTION: Hndle components nd crds with cre. Do not touch the components or contcts on crd. Hold crd y its edges or y its metl mounting rcket. Hold component such s processor y its edges, not y its pins. CAUTION: When you disconnect cle, pull on its connector or on its pull-t, not on the cle itself. Some cles hve connectors with locking ts; if you re disconnecting this type of cle, press in on the locking ts efore you disconnect the cle. As you pull connectors prt, keep them evenly ligned to void ending ny connector pins. Also, efore you connect cle, ensure tht oth connectors re correctly oriented nd ligned. NOTE: The color of your computer nd certin components my pper differently thn shown in this document. Before working inside your computer To void dmging your computer, perform the following steps efore you egin working inside the computer. 1 Ensure tht you follow the Sfety instructions. 2 Ensure tht your work surfce is flt nd clen to prevent the computer cover from eing scrtched. 3 Turn off your computer. CAUTION: To disconnect network cle, first unplug the cle from your computer nd then unplug the cle from the network device. 4 Disconnect ll the network cles from the computer. 5 Disconnect your computer nd ll ttched devices from the electricl outlets. 6 Press nd hold the power utton while the computer is unplugged to ground the system ord. 7 Remove the cover. CAUTION: Before touching nything inside your computer, ground yourself y touching n unpinted metl surfce, such s the metl t the ck of the computer. While you work, periodiclly touch n unpinted metl surfce to dissipte sttic electricity, which could hrm internl components. 6 Working on your computer

7 CAUTION: Mke sure tht you plce the cooler outlet side of your system t lest 5 cm wy from wll to prevent system overhet. CAUTION: Your system cnnot e plced crosswise nd mke sure tht there is no equipment on the side cover. Turning off your computer After working inside your computer After you complete ny replcement procedure, ensure tht you connect ny externl devices, crds, nd cles efore turning on your computer. CAUTION: To void dmge to the computer, use only the ttery designed for this prticulr Dell computer. Do not use tteries designed for other Dell computers. 1 Replce the ttery. 2 Replce the se cover. 3 Connect ny externl devices, such s port replictor or medi se, nd replce ny crds, such s n ExpressCrd. 4 Connect ny telephone or network cles to your computer. CAUTION: To connect network cle, first plug the cle into the network device nd then plug it into the computer. 5 Connect your computer nd ll ttched devices to their electricl outlets. 6 Turn on your computer. 8 Removing nd instlling components This section provides detiled informtion on how to remove or instll the components from your computer. Recommended tools The procedures in this document require the following tools: Phillips #0 screwdriver Phillips #1 screwdriver Smll plstic scrie Instlling the Suscrier Identifiction Module SIM crd 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Insert pperclip or SIM crd removl tool into the pinhole to remove the SIM crd try [1]. 3 Plce the SIM crd on the SIM crd try [2]. 4 Push the SIM crd try into the slot until it clicks into plce. 2 Removing the Suscrier Identifiction Module SIM crd CAUTION: Removing the SIM crd when the computer is on my cuse dt loss or dmge the crd. Ensure your computer is turned off or the network connections re disled. 1 Insert pperclip or SIM crd removl tool into the pinhole on the SIM crd try. 2 Remove the SIM crd from the SIM crd try. 3 Push the SIM crd try into the slot until it clicks into plce. 8 Removing nd instlling components

9 Removing the se cover 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 To remove the se cover: Loosen the screws tht secure the se cover to the computer [1]. Lift the se cover from the edge nd remove it from the computer [2, 3]. NOTE: You my need plstic scrie to lift the se cover from the edges. Instlling the se cover 1 Align the se cover with the screw holders on the computer. 2 Press the edges of the cover until it clicks into plce. 3 Tighten the screws to secure the se cover to the computer. 4 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the ttery NOTE: Dischrge the ttery s much s possile efore removing from the system. This cn e done y disconnecting the A/C dpter from the system (while the system is turned on) to llow the system to drin the ttery. 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the se cover. 3 To remove the ttery: Disconnect the ttery cle from the connector on the system ord [1]. Remove the screws tht secure the ttery to the computer [2]. NOTE: The numer of screws will vry depending on the type of ttery instlled. c Lift the ttery wy from the computer [3]. Do not pply pressure to the surfce of the ttery Do not end Do not use tools of ny kind to pry on or ginst the ttery If ttery cnnot e removed within the constrints ove, plese contct Dell technicl support Removing nd instlling components 9

10 4 Unroute the cle from the routing chnnel [1] nd remove the cle from the ttery [2]. NOTE: This step is pplicle only for 4-cell ttery. Instlling the ttery NOTE: If your computer supports 6-cell ttery, it will not support hrd drive. 1 Connect the ttery cle to the connector on the ttery. 2 Route the ttery cle through the routing chnnel on the ttery. NOTE: This step is pplicle only for 4-cell ttery. 3 Insert the ttery into the slot on the computer. 4 Tighten the screws to secure the ttery to the computer. NOTE: The numer of screws will vry depending on the type of ttery instlled. 5 Connect the ttery cle to the connector on the system ord. 6 Instll the se cover. 7 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the hrd drive ssemly If the system is shipped with hrd drive ssemly perform the following steps. 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: se cover ttery 3 To remove the hrd drive ssemly: Disconnect the hrd drive cle from the connector on the system ord [1]. Remove the screws tht secure the hrd drive ssemly to the computer [2]. c Lift the hrd drive ssemly wy from the computer [3]. 10 Removing nd instlling components

11 Removing the hrd drive from the hrd drive rcket 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: se cover ttery c hrd drive ssemly 3 Pull the hrd drive cle to remove it from the connector. 4 Remove the screws tht secure the hrd drive rcket to the hrd drive [1] nd lift the hrd drive from the hrd drive rcket [2]. 12 Instlling the hrd drive into the hrd drive rcket 1 Align the screw holders on the hrd drive with the screws on the hrd drive rcket. 2 Insert the hrd drive into the hrd drive rcket. 3 Tighten the screws to secure the hrd drive to the hrd drive rcket. 4 Instll the: c hrd drive ssemly ttery se cover 5 Follow the procedure in After working inside your system. Instlling the hrd drive ssemly If the system is shipped with hrd drive ssemly perform the following steps. 1 Insert the hrd drive ssemly into the slot on the computer. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the hrd drive ssemly to the computer. 3 Connect the hrd drive cle to the connector on the hrd drive nd on the system ord. 4 Instll the: ttery se cover 5 Follow the procedures in After working inside your system. Removing the optionl M.2 Solid Stte Drive SSD If the system is shipped with M.2 SSD perform the following steps. 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: se cover ttery 3 To remove the SSD: Remove the screw tht secures the SSD to the computer [1]. Slide nd lift the SSD from the computer [2]. 12 Removing nd instlling components

13 Instlling the optionl M.2 SSD If the system is shipped with M.2 SSD perform the following steps. 1 Insert the SSD into the connector on the computer. 2 Tighten the screw to secure the SSD to the computer. 3 Instll the: ttery se cover 4 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the optionl PCIe SSD If the system is shipped with PCIe SSD perform the following steps. 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: se cover ttery 3 To remove the PCIe SSD: Remove the screws tht secure the SSD rcket to the SSD [1]. Remove the SSD rcket [2]. c Remove the SSD from the computer [3]. d Remove the therml pd from the computer. Instlling the optionl PCIe SSD If the system is shipped with PCIe SSD perform the following steps. 1 Insert the SSD clip into the slot on the computer. 2 Tighten the screw to secure the SSD clip to the computer. 14 3 Remove the dhesive nd fix the therml pd to the slot in the computer. 4 Insert the SSD into the connector on the computer. 5 Plce the SSD rcket over the SSD nd tighten the screws to secure it to the computer. 6 Instll the: ttery se cover 7 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the memory module 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: se cover ttery 3 Pull the clips securing the memory module until the memory module pops up [1]. 4 Remove the memory module from the system ord [2]. Instlling the memory module 1 Insert the memory module into the memory module socket until the clips secure the memory module. 2 Instll the: ttery se cover 3 Follow the procedures in After working inside your computer. Removing the WLAN crd 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: se cover ttery 3 To remove the WLAN crd: Remove the screw tht secures the metl rcket to the WLAN crd [1]. Remove the metl rcket [2]. c Disconnect the WLAN cles from the connectors on the WLAN crd [3]. d Unroute the WLAN cles from the routing chnnel. e Remove the WLAN crd from the computer [4]. 14 Removing nd instlling components

15 Instlling the WLAN crd 1 Insert the WLAN crd into the slot on the computer. 2 Route the WLAN cles through the routing chnnel. 3 Connect the WLAN cles to the connectors on the WLAN Crd. 4 Plce the metl rcket nd tighten the screw to secure it to the computer. 5 Instll the: ttery se cover 6 Follow the procedure in After working inside your system. Removing the WWAN crd 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: se cover ttery 3 To remove the WWAN crd: Remove the screw tht secures the WWAN crd [1]. Disconnect the WWAN cles from the connectors on the WWAN crd [2]. c Unroute the WWAN cles from the routing chnnel. d Remove the WWAN crd from the computer [3]. Instlling the WWAN crd 1 Insert the WWAN crd into the slot on the computer. 2 Route the WWAN cles through the routing chnnel. 3 Connect the WWAN cles to the connectors on the WWAN crd. 4 Tighten the screw to secure the WWAN crd to the computer Removing nd instlling components 15

16 5 Instll the: ttery se cover 6 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the dock frme 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c d e se cover ttery hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD WLAN crd WWAN crd 3 To remove the dock frme connectors: Remove the screws tht secure the dock frme to the computer [1]. Remove the screw nd lift the SSD plte from the computer [2, 3]. NOTE: Step 3 is required only if the PCIe SSD crd is removed. c Disconnect the keyord cles [4, 5]. 4 To remove the dock frme: Remove the screw nd lift the metl rcket [1,2]. Disconnect the edp cle [3]. c Remove the screws tht secure the dock frme to the computer [4]. d Lift the dock frme from the computer [5]. 16 Removing nd instlling components

17 Instlling the dock frme 1 Plce the dock frme on the computer nd tighten the screws. 2 Connect the edp cle. 3 Plce the metl rcket nd tighten the screw. 4 Connect the keyord cle. 5 Plce the SSD plte nd tighten the screw to secure it. NOTE: Step 5 is required only if the PCIe SSD crd is removed. 6 Tighten the screws to secure the dock frme to the computer. 7 Instll the: c d e WWAN crd WLAN crd hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD ttery se cover 8 Follow the procedure in After working inside your system. Removing the power connector port 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c se cover ttery dock frme 3 To remove the power connector port: Remove the screw to relese the metl rcket on the power connector port [1]. Lift the metl rcket from the computer [2]. c Disconnect the power connector port cle from the computer [3]. d Remove the power connector port from the computer [4]. Instlling the power connector port 1 Insert the power connector port into the slot on the computer. 2 Plce the metl rcket on the power connector port. 3 Tighten the screw to secure the power connector port to the computer. 18 4 Route the power connector port cle through the routing chnnels. 5 Connect the power connector port cle to the connector on the system ord. 6 Instll the: dock frme ttery c se cover 7 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the keyord 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: se cover ttery 3 Disconnect the keyord cles from the connectors on the touchpd ord [1, 2]. 4 To remove the keyord: Using plstic scrie, lift the keyord trim from the edges to relese it from the keyord [1, 2, 3]. Remove the screws tht secure the keyord to the computer [4]. NOTE: To void dmge to the keyord, gently remove the keyord from the computer. c Lift the keyord from computer [5]. Instlling the keyord 1 Align the keyord with the screw holders on the computer. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the keyord to the computer. 18 Removing nd instlling components

19 3 Align the keyord trim with the ts on the computer nd press it until it clicks into plce 4 Connect the keyord cles to the connectors on the touchpd ord. 5 Instll the: NOTE: If you hve removed the dock frme, then instll the dock frme nd then connect the keyord cles. ttery se cover 6 Follow the procedure in After working inside your system. Removing the disply ssemly 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c d se cover ttery WLAN WWAN 3 To remove the disply hinge rckets: Remove the screw tht secures the disply hinge rcket to the computer [1]. Remove the disply hinge rcket from the computer [2]. c Remove the screws tht secure the disply ssemly to the computer [3]. 4 To disconnect disply cle nd remove the disply ssemly: Remove the screw tht secures the disply cle rcket to the computer [1]. Remove the disply cle rcket to ccess the disply cle [2]. c Disconnect the disply cle from the system ord [3]. d Relese the ntenn cles nd disply cle from the routing chnnel [4]. e Remove the screws tht secure the disply ssemly [5]. f Turn over the computer, open the disply, nd lift the disply ssemly from the computer [1] [2]. 20 Instlling the disply ssemly 1 Plce the disply ssemly to lign with the screw holders on the computer. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the disply ssemly to the computer. 3 Route the disply cle through the routing chnnel nd route the ntenn cles y pushing it through the hole. 4 Connect the ntenn cles nd disply cle to the connectors. 5 Plce the disply cle rcket over the connector nd tighten the screw to secure the disply cle to the computer. 6 Plce the disply hinge rcket nd tighten the screw to secure it to the computer. 7 Instll the: c d WLAN WWAN ttery se cover 8 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the touchpd utton 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c se cover ttery dock frme 3 To remove the touchpd utton: Lift the ltch nd disconnect the touchpd utton cle from the connector [1] [2]. Remove the screws tht secure the touchpd utton [3]. c Lift nd remove the touchpd utton wy from the computer [4]. 20 Removing nd instlling components

21 Instlling the touchpd utton 1 Plce the touchpd utton into the slot on the system ord. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the touchpd utton to the system ord. 3 Connect the touchpd utton cle to the connector on the system ord. 4 Instll the: c dock frme ttery se cover 5 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the optionl SmrtCrd reder ord 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c d e f se cover ttery hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD WLAN crd WWAN crd dock frme 3 To remove the SmrtCrd reder ord: Disconnect the SmrtCrd reder ord cle from the USH ord [1, 2]. Peel the cle to relese from the dhesive. c Remove the screws tht secure the SmrtCrd reder ord to the computer [3]. d Lift the SmrtCrd reder ord from the computer [4]. 22 Instlling the optionl SmrtCrd reder ord 1 Insert the SmrtCrd reder ord into the slot on the computer. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the SmrtCrd reder ord to the computer. 3 Connect the SmrtCrd reder cle to the connector on the USH ord. 4 Instll the: c d e f dock frme WWAN crd WLAN crd hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD ttery se cover 5 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the optionl finger print reder ord 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c d e f se cover ttery hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD WLAN crd WWAN crd dock frme 3 To remove the finger print reder ord: Disconnect the finger print reder cle from the finger print reder ord [1, 2]. Remove the screw tht secures the finger print reder ord to the computer [3]. c Lift the finger print reder ord from the computer [4]. 22 Removing nd instlling components

23 Instlling the optionl finger print reder ord 1 Insert the finger print reder ord into the slot on the computer. 2 Connect the finger print reder cle to the finger print reder ord. 3 Instll the: c d e f hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD dock frme WLAN crd WWAN crd ttery se cover 4 Follow the procedure in After working inside your system. Removing the LED ord 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c d e f se cover ttery hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD WLAN crd WWAN crd dock frme 3 To remove the LED ord: Disconnect the LED ord cle from the connector on the LED ord [1, 2]. Remove the screw tht secures the LED ord to the computer [3]. c Lift the LED ord from the computer [4]. Removing nd instlling components 23

24 Instlling the LED ord 1 Insert the LED ord into the slot on the computer. 2 Tighten the screw tht secures the LED ord to the computer. 3 Connect the LED ord cle to the connector on the LED ord. 4 Instll the: c d e f dock frme WWAN crd WLAN crd hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD ttery se cover 5 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the het sink ssemly 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c d e f se cover ttery hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD WLAN WWAN dock frme 3 To remove the het sink: Disconnect the fn cle [1]. Remove the screws tht secure the het sink ssemly to the system ord [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. c Lift the het sink ssemly from the system ord [7]. 24 Removing nd instlling components

Instlling the het sink ssemly 1 Plce the het sink ssemly on the system ord nd lign it with the screw holders. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the het sink ssemly to the system ord. 3 Connect the fn cle to the connector on the system ord. 4 Instll the: c d e f dock frme WWAN WLAN hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD ttery se cover 5 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the coin cell ttery 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c d se cover ttery hrd drive ssemlyor M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD dock frme 3 To remove the coin cell ttery: Disconnect the coin cell ttery cle from the connector on the system ord [1]. Lift the coin cell ttery to relese it from the dhesive nd remove it from the system ord [2]. Removing nd instlling components 25

26 Instlling the coin cell ttery 1 Plce the coin cell ttery into the slot on the system ord. 2 Connect the coin cell ttery cle to the connector on the system ord. 3 Instll the: c d dock frme hrd drive ssemlyor M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD ttery se cover 4 Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer. Removing the spekers 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the: c d e f se cover ttery hrd drive ssemly or M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD WWAN WLAN dock frme 3 To remove the speker: Disconnect the speker cle [1]. Lift the ltch nd disconnect the cle [2, 3]. c Remove the screw [4]. d Lift the LED ord [5]. e Remove the speker from the computer [6]. 26 Removing nd instlling components
