Buy the pproprite interfce cle for the interfce you wnt to use (USB, Prllel or Network). USB cle Plese mke sure you use USB 2.0 cle (Type A/B) tht is no longer thn 6 feet (2 meters). DO NOT connect the interfce cle t this time. Connecting the interfce cle is done during MFL-Pro instlltion process. When you use USB cle, mke sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer nd not to USB port on keyord or non-powered USB hu. Prllel cle DO NOT use prllel interfce cle tht is longer thn 6 feet (2 meters). Use shielded interfce cle tht is IEEE 1284-complint. Network cle Use stright-through Ctegory5 (or greter) twisted-pir cle for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fst Ethernet Network. USA/CAN Version A 1

3 2 Instll the drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemly d Gently shke it from side to side severl times to distriute the toner evenly inside the ssemly. DO NOT connect the interfce cle yet. Remove the protective tpe nd film covering the scnner glss. Press the front cover relese utton nd open the front cover. e Put the drum unit ssemly into the mchine until it clicks into plce. 1 f Close the front cover of the mchine. c Unpck the drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemly. 3

4 3 Lod pper in the pper try Pull the pper try completely out of the mchine. c Fn the stck of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. d Put pper in the try, nd mke sure tht the pper is elow the mximum pper mrk. The side to e printed on must e fce down. 1 While pressing the lue pper-guide relese lever, slide the pper guides to fit the pper size you re loding in the try. Mke sure tht the guides re firmly in the slots. 1 e f Mke sure the pper guides touch the sides of the pper so it will feed properly. Put the pper try firmly ck in the mchine. Mke sure tht it is completely inserted into the mchine. Unfold the support flp to prevent pper from sliding off the fce-down output try. For Legl or Folio size pper, press the relese utton in the ottom of the pper try nd then pull out the ck of the pper try. (Legl or Folio size pper re not ville in some regions.) 1 1 4

5 4 Relese the scnner lock Push the lever in the direction shown to unlock the scnner. (The gry scnner lock lever is locted t the ck left side, under the document cover.) 2 6 Choose your lnguge (If needed) Press Menu. Press 1. c Press 0. d Press or to choose your lnguge. Press OK. e Press Stop/Exit. 1 7 Set the LCD contrst (If needed) 5 Connect the power cord DO NOT connect the interfce cle yet. Mke sure tht the mchine power switch is off. Connect the AC power cord to the mchine. If you re hving difficulty reding the LCD, try chnging the contrst setting. Press 1. c Press 5. Press Menu. d Press to increse the contrst. OR e Press Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. to decrese the contrst. Plug the AC power cord into n AC outlet. Turn the power switch on. If Scnner Locked ppers on the LCD, immeditely relese the scnner lock nd press Stop/Exit. (See Relese the scnner lock on pge 5.) 5

6 8 Set the dte nd time This setting llows the mchine to nme files creted when using the Scn to USB feture. Press 6. c Press 1. d Press Menu. Enter the lst two digits of the yer on the dil pd, nd then press OK. 61.Dte&Time g h 9 Automtic Enter the time in 24-hour formt on the dil pd, nd then press OK. 61.Dte&Time 03/25/2009 Time:15:25 Enter & OK Key (e.g. Enter 1 5, 2 5 for 3:25 P.M.) Press Stop/Exit. Dylight Svings Time e f Yer:2009 Enter & OK Key (e.g. Enter 0, 9 for 2009.) Enter the two digits for the month on the dil pd, nd then press OK. 61.Dte&Time XX/XX/2009 Month:03 Enter & OK Key (e.g. Enter 0, 3 for Mrch.) Enter the two digits for the dy on the dil pd, nd then press OK. 61.Dte&Time 03/XX/2009 Dy:25 Enter & OK Key (e.g. Enter 2, 5.) You cn set the mchine to chnge utomticlly for dylight svings time. It will reset itself forwrd one hour in the Spring nd ckwrd one hour in the Fll. Press Menu. Press 6. c Press 2. d Press or to choose On (or Off). Press OK. e Press Stop/Exit. 6

DO NOT connect the USB cle yet. If there re ny progrms running, close them. Mke sure USB Flsh memory device is not inserted into the mchine. The screen my differ depending on the operting system. The supplied CD-ROM includes ScnSoft PperPort 11SE. This softwre supports 2000 (SP4 or greter), XP (SP2 or greter), XP Professionl x64 Edition nd Windows Vist. Updte to the ltest Service Pck efore instlling MFL-Pro Suite. Turn off nd unplug the mchine from the AC outlet nd disconnect it from your computer, if you lredy connected n interfce cle. Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme screen ppers, choose your mchine. If the lnguge screen ppers, choose your lnguge. If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click Strt.exe. The CD-ROM min menu will pper. Click Initil Instlltion. c Click Instll MFL-Pro Suite. 8

9 USB If the instlltion does not continue utomticlly, open the min menu gin y ejecting nd then reinserting the CD-ROM or doule-click the Strt.exe progrm from the root folder, nd continue from step c to instll MFL-Pro Suite. For Windows Vist, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Allow. d When the ScnSoft PperPort 11SE License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the Softwre License Agreement. g h Choose Locl Connection, nd then click Next. The instlltion continues. If you wnt to instll the PS driver (Brother s BR-Script Driver), choose Custom Instll nd then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Fetures screen ppers, check PS Printer Driver, nd then continue following the on-screen instructions. If you do not wnt to monitor the mchine sttus nd error notifiction from your computer, uncheck Enle Sttus Monitor nd then click Next. USB Mcintosh e f The instlltion of ScnSoft PperPort 11SE will utomticlly strt nd is followed y the instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Softwre License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the Softwre License Agreement. i When this screen ppers, go to the next step. 9

10 USB 13 Connect the USB cle 14 Connect the power cord DO NOT connect the mchine to USB port on keyord or non-powered USB hu. Connect the mchine directly to your computer. Plug the AC power cord into n AC outlet. Turn the power switch on. Remove the lel covering the USB interfce connector. Connect the USB cle to the USB connector on the mchine mrked with the symol. Then connect the cle to your computer. The instlltion will continue utomticlly. The instlltion screens pper one fter nother. DO NOT cncel ny of the screens during the instlltion. It my tke few seconds for ll screens to pper. When the On-Line Registrtion screen is displyed, mke your selection nd follow the on-screen instructions. Once you hve completed the registrtion process, close your we rowser to return to this window. Then click Next. 10

11 USB 15 Finish nd restrt Click Finish to restrt your computer. After restrting the computer, you must e logged on with Administrtor rights. USB Mcintosh If n error messge ppers during the softwre instlltion, run the Instlltion Dignostics locted in Strt/All Progrms/Brother /DCP-XXXX (where DCP-XXXX is your model nme). If this screen ppers, choose the firmwre updte setting nd click OK. Internet ccess is required for the firmwre upgrde. Finish The instlltion is now complete. XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver The XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver is the most suitle driver when printing from the pplictions tht use the XML Pper Specifiction documents. Plese downlod the ltest driver y ccessing the Brother Solutions Center t 11

12 USB Mcintosh For USB Interfce Users (Mc OS X or greter) 11 Before you instll Mke sure your mchine is connected to the power nd your Mcintosh is ON. You must e logged on with Administrtor rights. Mke sure USB Flsh memory device is not inserted into the mchine. Connect the USB cle to the USB connector on the mchine mrked with the symol. Then connect the cle to your computer. 12 Connect the USB cle DO NOT connect the mchine to USB port on keyord or non-powered USB hu. Connect the mchine directly to your Mcintosh. 13 Instll MFL-Pro Suite Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Remove the lel covering the USB interfce connector. Doule-click Strt Here OSX to instll. Plese wit, it will tke few seconds for the softwre to instll. After the instlltion, click Restrt to finish instlling the softwre. Plese see the Softwre User s Guide on the CD-ROM if you wnt to instll the PS driver. (Brother s BR-Script Driver) 12

13 USB Mcintosh c d The Brother softwre will serch for the Brother device. During this time the following screen will pper. Choose the mchine from the list, nd then click OK. 14 Instll Presto! PgeMnger When Presto! PgeMnger is instlled OCR cpility is dded to Brother ControlCenter2. You cn esily scn, shre nd orgnize photos nd documents using Presto! PgeMnger. Doule-click Presto! PgeMnger nd follow the on-screen instructions. USB Mcintosh e When this screen ppers, click OK. The instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite is now complete. Go to step 14 on pge 13. Turn the power switch on. The instlltion will continue utomticlly. The instlltion screens pper one fter nother. c For XP/XP Professionl x64 Edition users, wit for while since the instlltion of the Brother drivers will utomticlly strt. If your mchine is not found over the network, following screen will pper. h If you wnt to instll the PS driver (Brother s BR-Script Driver), choose Custom Instll nd then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Fetures screen ppers, check PS Printer Driver, nd then continue following the on-screen instructions. For XP SP2/XP Professionl x64 Edition/ Windows Vist users, when this screen ppers, choose Chnge the Firewll port settings to enle network connection nd continue with the instlltion. (Recommended) nd click Next. Confirm your network setting y following the on-screen instructions. If the mchine is not yet configured for use on your network, the following screen ppers. i If you re not using the Firewll, see the User s Guide for your softwre for informtion on how to dd the following network ports. For network scnning, dd UDP port If you still hve troule with your network connection, dd UDP port 137. If the mchine is configured for your network, choose the mchine from the list, nd then click Next. j k Click OK nd then Configure IP Address. Enter n IP ddress for your mchine tht is suitle for your network y following the on-screen instructions. If you do not wnt to monitor the mchine sttus nd error notifiction from your computer, uncheck Enle Sttus Monitor nd then click Next. The instlltion of the Brother drivers will utomticlly strt. After restrting the computer, you must e logged on with Administrtor rights. l When the On-Line Registrtion screen is displyed, mke your selection nd follow the on-screen instructions. Once you hve completed the registrtion process, close your we rowser to return to this window. Then click Next. If n error messge ppers during the softwre instlltion, run the Instlltion Dignostics locted in Strt/All Progrms/Brother/ DCP-XXXX LAN (where DCP-XXXX is your model nme). 22 Wired Network 16 Instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl computers (If needed) If you wnt to use your mchine with multiple computers on the network, instll MFL-Pro Suite on ech computer. Go to step 14 on pge 19. The MFL-Pro Suite Softwre License permits instlltion on up to 5 network computers. If you wnt to instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl computers, you cn purchse dditionl NL-5 (five user) license greements from your uthorized Brother deler or contct Brother customer service. Finish The instlltion is now complete. XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver The XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver is the most suitle driver when printing from the pplictions tht use the XML Pper Specifiction documents. Plese see the Network User s Guide on the CD-ROM if you wnt to instll the PS driver. (Brother s BR-Script Driver) The Brother softwre will serch for the Brother device. PgeMnger You cn find your mchine s IP ddress nd the node nme y printing out the Network Configurtion List. See Print the Network Configurtion List on pge 27. If your mchine is not found over the network, confirm your network setting. If this screen ppers click OK. When Presto! PgeMnger is instlled OCR cpility is dded to Brother ControlCenter2. You cn esily scn, shre nd orgnize photos nd documents using Presto! PgeMnger. Doule-click Presto! PgeMnger nd follow the on-screen instructions. Enter nme for your Mcintosh in Disply Nme up to 15 chrcters long nd click OK. Go to e. 15 Instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl computers (If needed) If you wnt to use your mchine with multiple computers on the network, instll MFL-Pro Suite on ech computer. Go to step 13 on pge 23. Finish The instlltion is now complete. If you wnt to use the mchine s Scn key to scn over the network, you must check the Register your computer with the Scn To function on the mchine ox. The nme you enter will pper on the mchine s LCD when you press nd choose scn option. It lso cn serch for Brother products on your network, view the sttus nd configure sic network settings, such s IP ddress. For more informtion on BRAdmin Light, visit us t If you require more dvnced printer mngement, use the ltest Brother BRAdmin Professionl utility version tht is ville s downlod from Instll the BRAdmin Light configurtion utility Click Network Utilities on the menu screen. Set your IP ddress, Sunet Msk nd Gtewy using BRAdmin Light If you hve DHCP/BOOTP/RARP server in your network, you do not hve to do the following opertion. The mchine will utomticlly otin its own IP ddress. Strt BRAdmin Light. It will serch for new devices utomticlly. Click BRAdmin Light nd follow the on-screen instructions. Doule-click the unconfigured device. c The defult pssword for the mchine is ccess. You cn use BRAdmin Light to chnge this pssword. Choose STATIC for the Boot Method. Enter the IP Address, Sunet Msk nd Gtewy, nd then click OK. d The ddress informtion will e sved to the mchine. 25

If you hve DHCP/BOOTP/RARP server in your network, you do not hve to do the following opertion. The mchine will utomticlly otin its own IP ddress. Mke sure tht version or greter of Jv client softwre is instlled on your computer. The defult pssword for the mchine is ccess. You cn use BRAdmin Light to chnge this pssword. e Choose STATIC for Boot Method. Enter the IP Address, Sunet Msk nd Gtewy, nd then click OK. Doule-click Mcintosh HD on your desktop. f The ddress informtion will e sved to the mchine. Choose Lirry, Printers, Brother nd then Utilities. c Doule-click the file BRAdmin Light.jr nd run the softwre. BRAdmin Light will then serch for new devices utomticlly. 26

27 For Network Users We Bsed Mngement (we rowser) The Brother print server is equipped with we server tht llows you to monitor its sttus or chnge some of its configurtion settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Trnsfer Protocol). To use we rowser, you will need to know the IP ddress of the print server. The IP ddress of the print server is listed on the Network Configurtion List. Open your rowser. Type printer_ip_ddress /into your rowser (Where printer_ip_ddress is the IP ddress of the printer or the print server nme). You cn find the IP ddress of the mchine on the Network Configurtion List. See Print the Network Configurtion List on pge 27. For exmple Print the Network Configurtion List You cn print the Network Configurtion List to confirm the current network settings. To print the Network Configurtion List: Mke sure tht the front cover is closed nd the AC power cord is plugged in. Turn on the mchine nd wit until the mchine is in the Redy stte. c Press Menu, 6, 6. d Press Strt. The mchine will print the current network settings. Restore the network settings to fctory defult To restore ll network settings of the internl Print/Scn server to fctory defult, plese follow the steps elow. Mke sure the mchine is not operting, then disconnect ll the cles from the mchine (except the power cord). Press Menu, 5, 0. c d e Press 1 to choose Reset. Press 1 to choose Yes.
