2 2 Instll the drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemly d Gently shke it from side to side severl times to distriute the toner evenly inside the ssemly. IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the interfce cle yet. Remove the protective tpe nd film covering the scnner glss. Press the front cover relese utton nd open the front cover. e Put the drum unit ssemly into the mchine until it clicks into plce. 1 f Close the front cover of the mchine. c Unpck the drum unit nd toner crtridge ssemly. 2

3 3 Lod pper in the pper try Pull the pper try completely out of the mchine. d Put pper in the try, nd mke sure tht the pper is elow the mximum pper mrk. The side to e printed on must e fce down. 1 While pressing the lue pper-guide relese lever, slide the pper guides to fit the pper size you re loding in the try. Mke sure tht the guides re firmly in the slots. e f IMPORTANT Mke sure the pper guides touch the sides of the pper so it will feed correctly. Put the pper try firmly ck in the mchine. Mke sure tht it is completely inserted into the mchine. Unfold the support flp to prevent pper from sliding off the fce-down output try. 1 c Fn the stck of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. 1 3

4 4 Attch the control pnel cover Open the document cover. Choose your lnguge nd ttch the control pnel cover to the mchine. 5 Connect the power cord IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the interfce cle yet. Mke sure tht the mchine power switch is off. Connect the AC power cord to the mchine. Note If the control pnel cover is not fitted correctly, the key opertions will not work. Plug the AC power cord into n AC outlet. Turn the power switch on. 4

5 6 Choose your lnguge After turning the power switch on, the LCD shows: Select Lnguge Press OK Key Press OK. Press or to choose your lnguge nd press OK. c Select or OK English The LCD prompts you to confirm your selection. English? 1.Yes 2.No If the LCD shows the correct lnguge, press 1. OR Press 2 to go ck to step to choose the lnguge gin. Note If you hve set the wrong lnguge, you cn chnge the lnguge from the control pnel menu of the mchine. (Menu, 1, 0) 7 Set Press 1. c Press 5. the LCD contrst (if needed) Press Menu. d Press to increse the contrst. e 8 Set OR Press Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. Press 5. c Press 1. d e f g h to decrese the contrst. the dte nd time Press Menu. Enter the lst two digits of the yer on the dil pd, nd then press OK. (e.g. Enter 0, 9 for 2009.) Enter the two digits for the month on the dil pd, nd then press OK. (e.g. Enter 0, 3 for Mrch.) Enter the two digits for the dy on the dil pd, nd then press OK. (e.g. Enter 2, 5.) Enter the time in 24-hour formt on the dil pd, nd then press OK. (e.g. Enter 1 5, 2 5 for 3:25 P.M.) Press Stop/Exit. 5

8 USB Windows For USB Interfce Users (Windows 2000 Professionl/XP/XP Professionl x64 Edition/ Windows Vist ) 11 Before you instll Mke sure tht your computer is ON nd you re logged on with Administrtor rights. Turn off nd unplug the mchine from the AC outlet nd disconnect it from your computer, if you lredy connected n interfce cle. h i If you do not wnt to monitor the mchine sttus nd error notifictions from your computer, uncheck Enle Sttus Monitor nd then click Next. When this screen ppers, go to the next step. 12 c d e f g Instll MFL-Pro Suite Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme screen ppers, choose your mchine. If the lnguge screen ppers, choose your lnguge. Note If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click Strt.exe. The CD-ROM top menu will pper. Click Initil Instlltion. Click Instll MFL-Pro Suite. When the ScnSoft PperPort 11SE License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the Softwre License Agreement. The instlltion of ScnSoft PperPort 11SE will utomticlly strt nd is followed y the instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Softwre License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the Softwre License Agreement. Choose Stndrd, nd then click Next. The instlltion continues. 13 Connect the USB cle Remove the lel covering the USB interfce connector. Connect the USB cle to the USB connector on the mchine mrked with the symol. Then connect the cle to your computer. 8

9 USB Windows 14 Connect the power cord Plug the AC power cord into n AC outlet. Turn the power switch on. The instlltion of the Brother drivers will utomticlly strt. The screens pper one fter nother. IMPORTANT DO NOT cncel ny of the screens during the instlltion. It my tke few seconds for ll screens to pper. When the On-Line Registrtion screen is displyed, mke your selection nd follow the on-screen instructions. Once you hve completed the registrtion process, close your we rowser to return to this window. Then click Next. Windows USBMcintosh 15 Finish nd restrt Click Finish to restrt your computer. After restrting the computer, you must e logged on with Administrtor rights. In the Check for Firmwre Updtes screen, choose the firmwre updte setting you wnt nd click OK. If you disled the Sttus Monitor setting in step h the screen will not pper. Note Internet ccess is required for the firmwre upgrde. Finish The instlltion is now complete. Note XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver The XML Pper Specifiction Printer Driver is the most suitle driver when printing from the pplictions tht use the XML Pper Specifiction documents. Plese downlod the ltest driver y ccessing the Brother Solutions Center t 9

10 USB Mcintosh For USB Interfce Users (Mc OS X or greter) 11 Before you instll 13 Instll MFL-Pro Suite 12 Mke sure your mchine is connected to the power nd your Mcintosh is ON. You must e logged on with Administrtor rights. Connect the USB cle c Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Doule-click Strt Here OSX to instll. The Brother softwre will serch for the Brother device. During this time the following screen will pper. IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the mchine to USB port on keyord or non-powered USB hu. Connect the mchine directly to your Mcintosh. Remove the lel covering the USB interfce connector. d e Choose the mchine from the list, nd then click OK. When this screen ppers, click OK. The instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite is now complete. Go to step 14 on pge 10. Connect the USB cle to the USB connector on the mchine mrked with the symol. Then connect the cle to your computer. 14 Instll Presto! PgeMnger When Presto! PgeMnger is instlled OCR cpility is dded to Brother ControlCenter2. You cn esily scn, shre nd orgnize photos nd documents using Presto! PgeMnger. Doule-click Presto! PgeMnger nd follow the on-screen instructions. Finish The instlltion is now complete. 10

11 Other Informtion To use the mchine sfely Plese keep these instructions for lter reference nd red them efore ttempting ny mintennce. WARNING There re high voltge electrodes inside the mchine. Before you clen the inside of the mchine, mke sure you hve unplugged the power cord from the electricl socket. Doing this will prevent n electricl shock. DO NOT hndle the plug with wet hnds. Doing this might cuse n electricl shock. Alwys mke sure the plug is fully inserted. This product must e instlled ner n electricl socket tht is esily ccessile. In cse of n emergency, you must unplug the power cord from the electricl socket to shut off the power completely. DO NOT use flmmle sustnces, ny type of spry or ny orgnic solvent/liquids contins lcohol or mmoni to clen the inside or outside of the mchine. Doing this my cuse fire or electricl shock. Refer to Routine mintennce in the User s Guide for how to clen the mchine. DO NOT use vcuum clener to clen up scttered toner. Doing this might cuse the toner dust to ignite inside the vcuum clener, potentilly strting fire. Plese crefully clen the toner dust with dry, lint-free soft cloth nd dispose of it ccording to locl regultions. 11

12 Other Informtion CAUTION After you hve just used the mchine, some internl prts of the mchine will e extremely hot. When you open the front or ck cover of the mchine, DO NOT touch the shded prts shown in the illustrtions. To prevent injuries, e creful not to put your hnds on the edge of the mchine under the document cover or scnner cover s shown in the illustrtions.
