1 Overview LINX MATRIX SWITCHERS FIRMWARE UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS FIRMWARE VERSION Due to the complex nture of this updte, plese fmilirize yourself with these instructions nd then contct RGB Spectrum Technicl Support , option 1) efore performing the updte. To instll ny version prior to , or updte version erlier thn 2.0, you must contct RGB Spectrum for ssistnce. For ll upgrdes, interlced sources should e disconnected from the Linx Switcher. IMPORTANT For upgrdes from ny version erlier thn 4.1, ll inputs to nd outputs from the Linx Switcher should e disconnected or disled efore performing n updte. If disconnection is not fesile, ll upstrem nd downstrem devices must e fully powered-down. Overview Performing the firmwre updte vi the seril port is preferle to using the Ethernet port, ecuse the Linx will continue to communicte its sttus even through system reset. While Telnet my e used to enter commnds, Ethernet connections re lost when the Linx resets nd require new log-in fter ech occurrence, nd therefore cnnot provide continuous sttus updtes, including when reset cycle hs completed. The seril port method tells you when n updte commnd or system reset hs completed y the return of the prompt (>) on the screen of the control PC. With Telnet, once the reset strts, the Telnet connection is lost. To prevent premture re-login to the Linx which could interfere with the updte process, the recommended wit time is pproximtely 30 minutes for the updte commnd. Determining the Current Firmwre Version On Linx 800, 900 or 1000, rotte the front-pnel control kno until the currently-instlled firmwre version ppers on the front-pnel disply. On Linx 1600, 1700, 1800, 3200, 3300 or 3400, push the SYS utton nd then rotte the control kno to disply the firmwre version. The version numer of the existing firmwre will determine the numer of steps required to updte to the ltest version. Choose the pproprite updte procedure for the currently-instlled version. Downlod Exported Settings From A Linx Switcher to PC 4. Pre-Instll Firmwre 4.1Pre-Up (for Versions Prior to 4.1) 5. Updte the Boot Code Of the I/O Crds (for Versions Prior to 4.1) 6. Uplod Settings From PC nd Import Settings Bck to Linx Trnsferring Files Files my e downloded from nd uploded to the Linx using File Trnsfer Protocol (FTP) vi connection through the Ethernet port. Files tht my e uploded to the Linx Switcher include previously-sved system settings, new firmwre, presets, nd EDID informtion. IMPORTANT The FTP client must e in inry mode to uplod firmwre. The mode does not hve to e set when trnsferring files using Windows Explorer. In the steps tht follow, n FTP session is illustrted using Windows Explorer (strt My Computer). 3 Trnsferring Files 1. Uplod Firmwre to the Linx Switcher c Connect PC to the Ethernet port of the Linx Switcher to trnsfer files. Open Windows Explorer. In the ddress r, enter the FTP commnd: ftp://rg:spectrum@nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn where nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn is the IP ddress of the Linx Switcher; rg:spectrum is the user nme nd pssword. The exmples tht follow use the ddress The Linx FTP directory ppers in the Explorer window s shown in Figure 1. 4 Trnsferring Files e Select the firmwre nd drg it to the Linx FTP directory. Copy progress is displyed. Export Settings It is highly recommended tht ll system settings e sved nd downloded to PC prior to eginning the updte procedure. Note In firmwre versions nd lter, the EDID list now hs three fctory defult settings. These re stored in the first three elements of the EDID list nd cnnot e overwritten. You should move ny current EDID settings to elow slot three efore exporting the settings in preprtion for the updte. Use seril or telnet connection to export settings from the Linx Switcher y executing the following commnd: exportsettings ll [file_nme.txt] This cretes file in the FTP folder of the Linx Switcher contining copy of the existing settings. 5 Trnsferring Files 3. Downlod Exported Settings From A Linx Switcher to PC Use the procedure in Uplod Firmwre to the Linx Switcher to initite rowsersed FTP session. Drg the exported settings file creted ove from the Linx Switcher s FTP folder to the desired loction on the connected PC. Files tht my e downloded from the Linx Switcher include exported system settings, EDID informtion, nd presets. 4. Pre-Instll Firmwre 4.1Pre-Up (for Versions Prior to 4.1) Do not interrupt power to the unit during the firmwre updte. IMPORTANT Delete ny exported or sved files in the Linx FTP uffer efore uploding ny firmwre files. System files user.log nd.profiles, if present, do not need to e deleted. The FTP client must e in inry mode to uplod firmwre. Using FTP, trnsfer the pre-instll file FWMO_4.1PreUp.tgz from the PC to the Linx Switcher. Execute the UFW commnd. 5. Updte the Boot Code Of the I/O Crds (for Versions Prior to 4.1) After system reoots, execute the commnd: UBT ALL ALL This commnd updtes the oot code on ll input nd output crds. When the system is redy, enter the SYSRST commnd to reoot it. 6. Instll Firmwre c d Using FTP, trnsfer the file FWMO_ tgz from the PC to the Linx Switcher. Execute the UFW commnd. For seril port control, wit until the prompt is redisplyed; for Telnet opertion, llow pproximtely 30 minutes to for the system to complete the updte nd reoot. Issue the SYStemINFO (SYSINFO) commnd to verify tht the correct firmwre version is displyed nd tht ll input nd output crds hve oot code version X.6.
