Never cotiue to use a battery pack after its rechargig capacity has become impaired, or after the display of a warig message idicatig that the battery pack's power is exhausted. Cotiued use of a exhausted or impaired battery pack could cause the loss of data. 2. Never dispose of battery packs with ormal trash. Brig them to your TOSHIBA dealer or to aother recyclig cetre to save resources ad prevet evirometal damage. Cover the termials with electrical tape to prevet short-circuits, which could cause the battery pack to igite or rupture. 3. Use oly battery packs recommeded by TOSHIBA as replacemets. 4. Always make sure the battery pack is istalled correctly ad securely. Otherwise, a battery pack could fall out ad possibly cause ijury. 5. Charge the battery pack oly i a ambiet temperature betwee 5 ad 30 degrees Celsius. Otherwise, the electrolyte solutio might leak, battery pack performace might deteriorate ad the battery life might be shorteed. 6. Be sure to moitor the remaiig battery power. If the battery pack or real time clock battery discharge completely, Sleep Mode will ot fuctio, ad data i memory will be lost, ad the computer might register a icorrect time ad date. I this case, coect the AC adapter to recharge the batteries. 7. Never istall or remove the battery pack without first turig off the power ad discoectig the AC adapter. Never remove the battery pack while the computer is i Sleep Mode as data will be lost. User s Maual 6-6

87 Power ad Power-Up Modes Note 1. Never remove the battery pack while the Wake-up o LAN fuctio is eabled. Data will be lost. Before you remove a battery pack, disable the Wake-up o LAN fuctio. 2. To esure the battery pack maitais maximum capacity, operate the computer o battery power oce a week util the battery pack is fully discharged. Refer to the sectio Extedig battery life i this chapter for procedures. If the computer is cotiuously operated o AC power for a exteded period, more tha a week, the battery might fail to retai a charge. It might ot fuctio efficietly over the expected life of the battery pack ad the Battery idicator might ot idicate a low-battery coditio. 3. After the battery pack is charged, avoid leavig the AC adapter coected ad the computer tured off for more tha a few hours at a time. Cotiuig to charge a fully charged battery pack ca damage the battery. Chargig the batteries Whe the power i the battery pack becomes low, the Battery idicator flashes amber idicatig that oly a few miutes of battery power remai. If you cotiue to use the computer while the Battery idicator flashes, the computer eables Hiberatio mode (so you do't lose data) ad automatically turs off. You must recharge a battery pack whe it becomes discharged. Procedures To recharge a battery pack while it is istalled i the computer, coect the AC adapter to the DC IN socket ad plug the other ed ito a workig outlet. The Battery idicator glows amber whe the battery is beig charged. Use oly the computer coected to a AC power source to charge the battery pack. Do ot attempt to charge the battery pack with ay other charger. Time The followig table shows the time required to fully charge a discharged battery. 88 Power ad Power-Up Modes The chargig time whe the computer is o is affected by ambiet temperature, the temperature of the computer ad how you use the computer. If you make heavy use of exteral devices the battery might scarcely charge at all durig operatio. Refer also to the sectio Maximizig battery operatig time. Battery chargig otice The battery may ot charge right away uder the followig coditios: The battery is extremely hot or cold. To make sure the battery charges to its full capacity, charge the battery at room temperature of 10 to 30 C (50 to 86 F). The battery is early completely discharged. Leave the AC adapter coected for a few miutes ad the battery should begi chargig. Oce a battery pack is fully charged, it is recommeded that you operate the computer oly o battery power util the battery pack completely discharges. Doig so exteds battery life ad helps esure accurate moitorig of battery capacity. The Battery idicator may show a rapid decrease i battery operatig time whe you try to charge a battery uder the followig coditios: The battery has ot bee used for a log time. The battery has completely discharged ad bee left i the computer for a log time. A cool battery is istalled i a warm computer. I such case, follow the steps below. 1. Fully discharge the battery by leavig it i the computer with the power o util the power automatically shuts off. 2. Plug i the AC adapter. 3. Charge the battery util the Battery idicator glows blue (depedig the model you purchased). Repeat these steps two or three times util the battery recovers ormal capacity. Leavig the AC adapter coected will shorte battery life. At least oce a week, ru the computer o battery power util the battery is fully discharged, the recharge the battery. User s Maual 6-8

89 Power ad Power-Up Modes Moitorig battery capacity Remaiig battery power ca be moitored usig the followig methods. Clickig the battery ico o the task bar Via the Battery Stats i the Widows Mobility Ceter Widow You should wait at least 16 secods after turig o the computer before tryig to moitor the remaiig operatig time. This is because the computer eeds this time to check the battery s remaiig capacity ad the calculate the remaiig operatig time, based o this together with the curret power cosumptio. Please be aware that the actual remaiig operatio time may differ slightly from the calculated time. With repeated discharges ad recharges, the battery's capacity will gradually decrease. I view of this it will be oted that a ofte used, older battery will ot operate for as log as a ew battery eve whe both are fully charged. Maximizig battery operatig time A battery's usefuless depeds o how log it ca supply power o a sigle charge. How log the charge lasts i a battery depeds o: How you cofigure the computer (for example, whether you eable battery power savig optios). The computer provides a battery save mode to coserve battery power. This mode has the followig optios: Display auto off Hard Disk Drive auto off System auto off LCD brightess How ofte ad how log you use the hard disk, optical media drive ad the disk drive (if oe is coected). How much charge the battery cotaied to begi with. Eablig Sleep Mode or Hiberatio Mode coserves battery power if you are frequetly turig the computer off ad o. Where you store your programs ad data.
