2. Gettig acquaited with reporter Fuctio overview I this chapter you become acquaited with the desig ad the basic fuctios of the reporter 690. It gives you a brief overview. A more detailed descriptio ca be foud i the correspodig chapters. Memory for the message texts Texts, to be idicated o the display, must already be stored i the reporter 690 memory. This meas oly the message umber is trasmitted via oe of the iterfaces ad ot the text itself. A two-lie by 20 character messages each ca be saved per address. Up to 100 (optio 512) message umbers may be assiged text. Message text is geerated directly at the PC with the REPORT programmig software (icluded i delivery) ad the trasmitted to reporter 690 memory via the serial iterface. Message data is retaied up to 10 years i memory i the evet of power loss. The messages, of course, ca be chaged at ay time. 2. Stack memory for text addresses If a message umber is trasmitted to the reporter 690 via oe of the iterfaces, the umber is set to stack memory. This stack memory has 16 storage locatios ad each of these locatios ca take oe message umber. Stack memory locatio o. 1 holds the umber of the actively displayed message. I the most simple case a icomig message umber is passed through the first stack memory address ad the correspodig text is immediately show o the display. We call this a istataeous value display. Operatig modes ca also be pre-selected to eter the icomig text addresses i the stack memory, like a shift register. Additioal displays as sequece display, first value display ud last value display ca be realized by a subsequet shiftig or rotatig of the stack memory. Memory for variable data texts The display of data alog with text is sometimes desired. The isertio of variable data ca be useful. The reporter 690 eables this by a variable data memory with the capacity of 99 texts with a maximum of 8 characters. The remarkable thig is: Placeholders with a referece to a certai address of variables ca be iserted ito each lie of a fixed programmed message text. The cotets of this address is the displayed i the message text. The variable itself ca be updated cotiuously via the iterface. A typical message,as show below, ca be displayed easily: Temperature: 20.5 C The explaatory text is saved i the message text memory ad the temperature value will be iserted as a variable ad updated as ew variable data is set to the reporter

2. Gettig acquaited with reporter 690 Attributes Attributes are additioal o-text iformatio which ca be allocated to message text i message memory. Attributes are defied durig message programmig with the programmig software. The followig attributes are possible: Priority: Texts provided with this immediately appear o the display regardless of the display mode Blikig: Text flashes whe displayed Time limit: Maximum display duratio of the correspodig text Coectio: Chaiig of several messages for extesive text sequeces Serial prit: The text provided with this is prited via the serial iterface Output: Texts with this attribute activate the alarm output cotact of the reporter Alarm output By meas of the alarm output - either opto-coupler or relay- the reporter 690 ca perform cotrol tasks. Messages, provided with the output attribute, activate the output. Thus, a optical or acoustical sigal ca be activated for warig messages. Iterfaces The complete cotrol ad programmig of the message display takes place through iterfaces. For that purpose the message display has a serial ad parallel iterface. The serial iterface -available i the stadards RS 232, RS422 ad RS485- serves for the complete operatio of the device, to chai several displays ad commuicate with the REPORT programmig software. The parallel iterface cosists of 8 (optio 9) data iputs plus cotrol iputs. They serve as iputs for the parallel trasmissio of message umbers ad data. Sesors, limit switches, relay circuits, hardwired logic, programmable cotrolers ad so o ca call up messages. Setup All operatig parameters are maaged i setup memory. Etries ad chages are made with the REPORT programmig software. Special fuctios Special fuctios ca be activated by special commad or the cotrol iput SFI. The special fuctios are: Display of the operatig parameters Display test Moitor mode Read out the text memory Test the iput sigals Test the cotrol sigals Delete the stack memory Read out the diagosis memory 2-5

2. Gettig acquaited with reporter 690 Optio package 2. The reporter 690 "with optio package" offers the followig additioal features: Historical memory for last 100 message umbers called Battery-backed real-time clock Stack memory expaded to 32 iputs Memory expaded to 512 message umbers REPORT Programmig software A comfortable, largely self-explaiig, software eables easy programmig of the reporter 690. The software requires a PC with a MS-DOS operatig system to commuicate with the reporter 690 via a serial iterface. The software is used to: defie ad maage message texts eter defaults for variable data ito the variable data memory set operatig parameters (setup) activate ad check additioal ad special fuctios 2-6

How to program the reporter 690 Set operatig mode for message text callig [Message mode] Message umbers which are trasmitted to reporter 690 are called up either directly or via the stack memory. This results i 4 basic operatig modes for the message text display. 1. Istataeous value [Direct message]: The icomig message requests are displayed directly without imtermediate storig. 2. Sequeced list [Cycle queue]: The message umbers are put ito the stack memory i the order received. The request o the first positio of the stack memory (the message that arrived first) is displayed. Subsequet requests are queued. With stack memory etries, the correspodig messageumbers ca be called periodically oe after the other by shiftig i the directio of the first stack memory address. The etry pushed out of the first positio is added to the ed Queued [First i/first out]: The message umber requests are put ito the stack memory i the order received. The request o the first positio of the stack memory (the message that arrived first) is displayed. Subsequet requests are added to the ed of the queue.the correspodig messages are called oe after the other i order of queuig. A etry is lost after it is doe beig displayed. After oe pass, the stack memory is empty if o more messages come i. (Stack memory acts as a FIFO queue.) 4. Last value [Last i/first out]: A message umber request is put ito the first stack memory address ad is displayed. Requests already stored will be shifted backwards by oe positio. I this maer, the last message called is always displayed first. Message umbers are called oe after the other by shiftig i the directio of the first stack memory address. A etry is lost after it is doe beig displayed. After oe pass the stack memory is deleted if o more messages come i. (Stack memory acts as a LIFO queue.) Switch over to saved message text requests Switchig over to the ext message i the operatig modes 2,3 ad 4 is triggered by the iput MPI (or key MPI) or by the message text itself if it has the attribute "time limit" (see chapter 5.3 geeratig message texts). 5-4

After expiratio of td, the data, waitig at this momet, is accepted. If a ew data chage is recogized before expiratio of td, the delay time is restarted. The delay time td ca be set i the setup, see ext poit. Set delay time for static data acceptace [Iput delay] You ca set the delay time td from 20 to 990 ms. This is the required time for the data to remai o the parallel iputs to be accepted.! The value to be etered is scaled by a factor of 10ms. Therefore, a delay time of 10 will be 100ms! Set ackowledgemet for parallel data trasmissio [Output] 5. reporter 690 is able to sed a ackowledgemet sigal after acceptiga data through the parallel iterface. The alarm output (relay or opto-coupler) is used for this purpose. The otime of the output (ackowledgemet time tq) is 200ms. The time betwee data acceptace ad output of the ackowledgemet sigal (tdq) depeds o the iteral processig time. If you wat this ackowledgemet, please select [Separate ackowledge]. If you use the alarm output as a message related cotrol sigal, select [Normal]. 27 5. How to program the reporter 690 Release/lock operatig key MPI [Key] The ackowledgemet key MPI o the frot plate of the reporter 690 ca be active or locked. If you activate the key it has the same fuctios as the cotrol iput MPI of the parallel iterface. Acoustic ackowledgemet sigal o/off [Buzzer] A built-i buzzer acoustically ackowledges the take-over of data or settigs. If you do ot wat a beep sigal please select [Off]. Select the laguage [Character set] Select the laguage i which the reporter 690 should display iformatio i additio to the message text display. Set blik rate of message texts [Blik rate] You may allocate the "flashig" attribute to message texts (see chapter 5.3.2). The correspodig text the flashes o the display. The flashig frequecy is determied with a value from 2 to 50 - small values for fast flashig, large values for slow flashig. Settig the cycle time for the movig scree [Cycle time] 5. Message texts ca be displayed as movig screes. Both lies o the display are permaetly shifted character by character to the right or the left (see chapter 5.4.6). The speed to move the display is determied with the setup parameter "Cycle". Values from ca be etered. Select a larger value for slower movemet of the text. How to program the power-o message [Power-o message] After a power-o sequece, a user-programable message is show i the display. This message is redeemed from ay activity o the serial or parallel iterface. To set the power-o message, choose the item accordig to this poit. You ca eter ay character for both lies. The secod lie is alteratig with a third lie i a period of 3 secods. 5-7

5. How to program the reporter Programmig of message texts [Textfile] This chapter cotais iformatio about the maagemet of messages the programmig of messages the structure of message texts the chaiig of messages with additioal iformatio All commads, ecessary for messages ca be foud uder item [Textfile] i the meu lie Maagemet of messages Message files are maaged i same way as setup data. Key Home Key Ed! Use ESC to quit the text editor ad to retur to the file meu! Message text addresses 5. If a stored message is to be displayed i the ormal operatio of the reporter 690, it must be iitiated by trasmissio of its messagfe umber. Therefore message umbers ad the message stored i this address are oe uit. All 100 storage locatios (optio 512) are already desigated as iput fields. The iput mask is umbered successively with the addresses 1 to 100 (512). If you eter, for example, a message ito field o. 1, later you may call this message by address o.1. Eter message texts The fields for message text iput are divided ito lies 1 ad 2. Each lie has room for 20 alphaumeric characters. This correspods to the structure of the LCD display of the reporter 690. If you eter the text ito the left field it will later appear i the upper lie of the display. Texts etered ito the right field, appear i the lower lie. The text appears o the display as you have etered it i the fields, icludig blak characters ad spaces. Attetio: Do ot use the special character "#". It is reserved as a placeholder for variables (see the followig poit).! 5-10

5. How to program the reporter 690 Allocate variable umbers Variables are texts which frequetly chage, as the ame already reveals. They caot be stored as fixed messages. Cosider for example the display of a costatly chagig measured value. The value is ot i the message memory but i variable storage (see block diagram o the pages 2-4). Here it is updated via the serial or parallel iterface. I this way, a typical text, such as "test poit1: 80.5 F", ca be idicated appropriately. The 3-digit umerical value is the variable, the framig text plus decimal poit is a fixed message text. The followig must be cosidered whe embeddig variables ito messages: Assigig a variable to a message text lie takes place by eterig the umber (address) where the desired variable is saved i the variable storage (ad will be updated too). For this purpose, variable data with max. 8 ASCII-characters ca be iserted oce per lie. The variable storage cotais max. 99 variables. Therefore you may eter a value betwee 1 ad 99 i the correspodig field. Placeholders are etered i the message text to positio the variable i the text lie. Use the character "#" (ASCII 23hex). These placeholders are replaced by the variable foud via the variable umber ad aliged to the left whe idicatig the text. If the variable text (max.8) is larger tha the umber of placeholders the ed of the variable text is cut correspodigly. 5. The variables or their placeholders must ot be etered successively ad ca be iterrupted by fixed text passages. These parts are simply skipped whe aligig the variable text to the left. Example: Fixed message text: test poit1: ##.# F (assiged to variable No.1) Curret cotets variable No.1: 805 Displayed as: test poit1: 80.5 F 5-11

5. How to program the reporter 690 Program attributes Attributes are additioal o-text iformatio which ca be combied with a message. You may combie a message with the followig attributes: P B S O Chai with Displ Time (Priority) (Blikig) (Serial prit) (Output) (Associated message) (Time limit) Eter "X" (key X or mouse-click i the field) to activate the attributes "P"," B"," S" ad " O". The attributes "Chai. with" ad "Displ. Time" are activated if you eter a umerical value i the correspodig fields. 5. Priority If you use the display modes Cycle queue, First i/first out or Last i/first out the trasmitted message addresses will first be put ito stack memory. Because the message displayed is the oe i the first positio i stack memory, this may lead to problems for alarm messages ad other importat texts. They should be displayed immediately regardless of their sequece. If you activate attribute "P" (Priority), the associated message is displayed immediately; regardless of the display mode or sequece. Oly oe message ca hold thhe priority flag. A priority text always takes the first positio i the stack memory. Existig texts will be shifted backwards. Blikig If you set the attribute "B" (blikig) the correspodig text flashes while displayed. The flashig frequecy is variable ad defied i the setup (see chapter edit setup data).! The flashig frequecy defied i the setup is for all texts associated with attribute "B". Serial prit If a text with attribute "S" is displayed, the text is set out the serial port of the reporter 690 at the same time. By usig thisfeature, the displayig of certai messages ca be recorded. 5-12

5. How to program the reporter 690 Alarm Output Messages for which the attribute "O" is set, activate the alarm output of the reporter 690 whe they are displayed. The message output remais active as log as the associated message is show o the display.! The attribute "O" is effective oly if the parameter "Output = Normal" is set i the setup that meas the message output is ot used for ackowledgig data trasmissios (see chapter edit setup data). Chaied message Depedig o the appplicatio, it ca be useful to chai several messages (chaied message). Eter the address of the message to be chaied with this message i field "Chai with". Ay umber of messages ca be chaied i sequece. To switch over from oe message to the chaied message takes place with the iput MPI or by the message if it has the attribute "Displ. Time" (see ext poit). Time limit If there are messages i the stack message or if they are chaied with each other, switch-over to the ext message takes place with the cotrol iput MPI (or the key MPI if available). The time limit desired is allocated to a message by eterig a time limit i the field "Displ. Time". Eter the maximum display time i secods. If the time limit of a displayed message is expired, the ext message i the queue automatically appears or the chaied message. If there is o chaied or waitig message, the default -message is displayed after expiratio of the display time (see ext poit). 5. Eter default message If o message is requested ad all waitig messages are processed, a default message appears i the display. The default message is message address 100 (512 "with optio package"). 5-13

5. How to program the reporter Additioal ad special fuctios [Commads] I this chapter you will fid iformatio how to call messages for test purposes programm default values for variable data display character strigs directly work with the diagosis memory set time ad date activate special fuctios You will fid all commads cocerig additioal ad special fuctios uder item [Commads] i the meu lie. Notice: Some of the additioal ad special fuctios which ca be foud here are oly useful durig the operatio of the reporter 690 if they are called from the serial or parallel iterface. For test purposes, these fuctios ca be called with REPORT i the programmig phase Call messages If you wat to test the message text just defied i the display of reporter 690, you ca eter the required message address uder this meu item. After cofirmatio with RETURN the address is trasmitted ad the message appears accordig to the curret display mode o the display of the reporter Programm variable data [Variable value] Use this meu item to test the isertio of variable data ad to set a defied start value of a variable. Eter the variable umber ad the required variable value Moitor mode [Moitor] If you select [Moitor] you eter the moitor mode of the reporter 690. I this mode the reporter 690 displays oly icomig ASCII characters. Whe you eter the desired character strig, it is show simultaeously o the display. Use fuctio keyf6 to delete the displayed text ad F10 to quit the moitor mode. 5-14

5. How to program the reporter Optioal diagostic memory [Diagostic memory] If you program the versio of reporter 690 "with optio package", you ca edit the diagosis memory uder this meu item. You may read-out the diagostic memory save the cotets of the diagostic memory as a file prit the cotets of the diagostic memory delete the diagostic memory Diagostic memory files are saved with the extesio *.DIG. The diagostic memory records the data traffic betwee reporter 690 ad the cotrol. Up to 100 trasmissio protocols ca be saved i this memory. The storage takes place i the format date, time, set umber. If the storage volume is exceeded the error code 14 will be displayed (see chapter 6.2.3). Date Time Number :32 [08] :35 [01] :50 [01] :02 [07] Prit-out of the diagosic memory Set time ad date (optioal) [Time ad date] The reporter 690 "with optio package" has a battery-backed realtime clock. Uder this meu item time ad date ca be read-out or set. 5-15

5. How to program the reporter Activate special fuctios [Special fuctios] I ormal operatio of the display the special fuctios are called by special commads via the serial or the parallel iterface (see chapter 6). Durig the programmig ad test phases you may start these fuctios with the correspodig etries uder meu [Special fuctios].! Attetio: If special fuctios are activated, a "0" must be applied to all parallel iputs! Delete stack memory For a ew sequece the stack memory with the 16 storage locatios should be deleted so o more messages are i the memory. Movig scree 5. Each message text ca be displayed as movig scree durig operatio of the display. To test this you may scroll the messages to the right or to the left with the commad [Scrollig text]. First select the directio ad the eter the address of the message text to be moved. The time required for oe ru is determied with the setup parameter "Cycle time" (see chapter 5.2.3). Display parameters Start the read-out of the curret operatig parameters of reporter 690 with this item. The items saved i the setup are displayed oe after the other. Display test All pixels of the reporter 690's LCD-dot-matrix-display are activated at the same time. Ed of special fuctios The selected special fuctio is performed util you activate [Ed Special fuktios]. 5-16

5. How to program the reporter Termial program This chapter shows you how to use the termial program of REPORT to sed ad receive ASCII character strigs via the serial iterface prit received ad set character strigs o the priter save received character strigs i a file sed character strigs saved i a file. The temial program of REPORT is located uder the item [Termial] i the meu lie. Please ote that the Termial program is a uiversal iterface program. It has o fuctios especially desiged for the reporter 690. You ca use it i the test ad programmig phase, to sed cotrol commads to the display ad to receive their ackowledgemet protocols.! The Termial program bases its work o the iterface parameters defied uder the meu item [Commuicatio]. Etered character strig Iput widow of Termial Curret settigs of Termial 5. Fuctio key allocatio The operatig widow of Termial is a iput widow i which the character strig to be set is etered via the keyboard. The received character strigs are idicated i the same widow. Sedig ad receivig takes place simultaeously. This meas the characters are set directly oe by oe as you eter them. 5-17

5. How to program the reporter 690 Further operatios are performed via fuctio keys. Their allocatio is idicated i the lower widow edge. F2 F3 Sed Seds the cotets of the selected file as a ASCII character strig via the serial iterface. Receive Icomig characters are saved i a file. 5. 39 6. How to operate the reporter How to operate the reporter 690 I this chapter you will lear how to select message umbers trasfer variable values activate special fuctios via the serial ad parallel iterface. The reporter 690 is operated from a cotrol uit (PLC, computer, wired logic, etc.). Cotrol may be performed via the serial as well as via the parallel iterface of the display. This depeds o the requiremets of the total system. Whe cotrol takes place via a PLC, limit switch, relay or somethig similar, the parallel iterface is used. If the reporter 690 is part of a system with a cetral cotrol computer data trasfer takes place via the serial iterface. 6.1 Cotrol via the parallel iterface The parallel iterface of the reporter 690 eables simple activatio without strict sigal ad protocol requiremets. Some characteristics of the parallel iterface deped o the settig i the setup. Followig you will fid a summary of the most importat poits cocerig the parallel iterface: Variable Zyklus Strobe MPI SFI E1 E2 E3 E4 E5 E6 E7 E8 E Coectio: 14-pole termial block (see chapter 3.3) Sigal level: Digital cotrol (0/1), related to the operatig voltage, 0=Gd, 1=+O. Iputs ot used (ope iputs) are recogized as level "0" (see chapter 3.3). 6. Data iputs: Decodig of data iputs: Data strobe: Coectios E1...E8 (E9 with optio package) BCD or biary code, accordig to setup settig (see chapter 5.2.3) Static (without cotrol sigal) or dyamic (with cotrol sigal) Strobe, accordig to setup settig (see chapter 5.2.3) Cotrol iputs: Strobe - Data strobe sigal Variable - Idetificatio for variable trasfer SFI - Idetificatio for special fuctios MPI - Ackowledgemet iput 6-1

6. How to operate the reporter Call-i message texts Summary of the most importat poits about message texts: message texts maximum (512 with optio package) Oe message texts icludes 2 lies with max. 20 characters each The message texts are pre-programmed (with REPORT programmig software) ad are located i the message text memory of the reporter 690 (see chapter 5.3.2) Message texts ca be provided with the attributes "P" (Priority), "B" (Blikig), "S" (Serial prit), "O" (Output), "Chai. with" (Associated message) ad "Displ. Time" (Time limit) (see chapter 5.3.2) Message texts ca be idicated i the 4 operatig modes "Direct message", "Cycle queue", "First i/first out", or "Last i/first out", accordig to the setup settig (see chapter 5.2.3) Message texts may also iclude variable data Messages are called by trasmissio of their memory address If o message is called, either directly or via the stack memory, the stadby message appears (programmed i the message address 100 or with optio package i address 512) Messages i the queue of the stack memory ad/or associated messages ca be switched with the iput MPI The operatig key of the reporter 690, if released i the setup, has the same fuctio as the iput MPI Message requests i the stack memory are lost whe switchig off the operatig voltage To display a message text, the message address must be applied to the data iputs i biary or BCD. A risig edge at the cotrol iput Strobe activates the address. After the iteral processig (i millisecods), the correspodig message appears o the display. If you select the static data strobe (disable strobe sigal) i the setup, a message text address eed oly be applied to activate the message. The followig example shows how a display ca be show i this way. Example: I a cliic the reporter 690 is used for the moitorig ad status display of a etrace gate to a sesitive operatig area. The automatic doors are cotrolled by limit switches. Therefore o "itelliget" cotrol like a PLC or a computer system is resposible for the display. Wirig, programmig of the message texts ad the setup settigs are as follows: 6-2
