1 Windows 7 Offline Files Proceduree Due to the nature of the Roaming Profiles and Redirected Home Folders features, machines that leave the District s network will not perform desirably by default. Since your user home folders are stored on the network, they are only accessible while on the District s network. Microsoft has addressed the issue by leveraging their Microsoft Sync Center software. Microsoft Sync Center synchronizes the network based home folder with a local profile folder, thus allowing the synchronized user to access their documents off net. The concept that has to be understood here is that anytime a user is planning to leave the network (ie take a laptop home, travel, etc.) they must perform the Sync process immediately priorr to shutting down and detaching from the network. Then, upon return to the District s network, they must again perform a sync to update any documents that may have added/changed while off net. The procedure is quite easy, but requires some attention to detail and a one time software install. 1: Requesting Offline Files for a Workstation Firstly, you must request that your workstation be an Offline Files workstation and provide your workstation s Fixed Asset Number. Please the request to networkoffice@lewistonschools.net to get that process started. Please remember to include your Fixed Asset Number. Note: You may find your fixed asset number both on your desktop wallpaper (listed there as HOSTNAME) or on the small white sticker with Independent School District No.1, a barcode, and a five digit number attached to your machine. Most laptops have this sticker affixed to the underside of the machine. We need the five digit number. 2: Group Policy Updating to Receive the Offline Files Setting After you receive a reply stating that the offline files policy have been applied to your workstation, you will have too reboot your network attached machine a number of times after performing a policy update. Click on the Start button and type gpupdate (without quotes) and press ENTER.

2 A Command screen should open and run gpupdate. The Command screen should close automatically, or remain open with a prompt to either logoff or reboot. Go to Start and click the expansion arrow next to Shut down, and select restart. Once the machine is rebooted, login and perform another gpupdate and reboot. After the 2 nd reboot, click on Start, and open your username at the top of the right hand column. You should see your profile folders (My Documents, My Music, My Pictures etc) and they should have a green circle with an arrow resembling a reload icon placed in the corner of each folder.

3 If this is not the case, please perform another gpupdate and reboot. If the green icons still have not appeared on your profile folders, please contact the Network Office at If you havee the green icons, click on Start and open the Control Panel. In the upper right corner, ensure the View by: Small Icons is selected in the dropdown. You should see Microsoft Sync Center in the list. Open it.

4 3: Initial Synchronization In the Microsoft Sync Center, click Sync All. This initial sync may take a while, depending on the amount of data you are storing on your account. Pleasee wait for the sync to finish, then take a look at any errors that may have been produced during the sync by clicking on the X errors linkk (where X is the number of errors.) You may see things like Firefox cookies, which you may disregard. If you see any errors on the sync from any of your filess (work documents, spreadsheets, etc.), those will need to be remediated. For assistance with any sync errors, please contact you campus Computer Technologist. Here is a capture of some standard Firefox cookies that fail to sync: 4: Leaving the Network Immediately priorr to leaving the network, open the Sync Center in the Control Panel and perform a Sync All. Check for errors when complete. Shut down the machine and disconnect from the network..

5 5: Returning to the Network Upon return to the network, prior to doing any work, please run a Sync All again. This will update any documents that you may have modified while off net, and add any new documents you may have created, as long as you stored them in My Documents or another area of your user profile.
