WARNING Wrnings tell you wht to do to prevent possile personl injury. Importnt DO NOT connect the USB cle yet (if you re using USB cle). The components included in the ox my differ depending on your country. Sve ll pcking mterils nd the ox in cse for ny reson you must ship your mchine. You need to purchse the correct interfce cle for the interfce you wnt to use (for USB or network connection). USB cle Plese mke sure you use USB 2.0 cle (Type A/B) tht is no more thn 6 feet (2 meters) long. Network cle Use stright-through Ctegory5 (or greter) twisted-pir cle for 0BASE-T or 00BASE-TX Fst Ethernet Network. USA/CAN Version 0

2 2 Lod plin Letter/A4 pper Pull the pper try completely out of the mchine. d e Fn the stck of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. Gently put the pper into the pper try print side down nd top edge first. Check tht the pper is flt in the try. Importnt Do not push the pper in too fr. Open the pper try cover. When you use Legl size pper, press nd hold the universl guide relese utton s you slide out the front of the pper try. c With oth hnds, gently press nd slide the pper side guides nd then the pper length guide to fit the pper size. Mke sure tht the tringulr mrks c on the pper side guides nd pper length guide line up with the mrk for the pper size you re using. 3 f Gently djust the pper side guides to the pper with oth hnds. Mke sure tht the pper side guides touch the edges of the pper

3 g Close the pper try cover. Check tht the pper is flt in the try nd elow the mximum pper mrk. h Slowly push the pper try completely into the mchine. i While holding the pper try in plce, pull out the pper support until it clicks, nd then unfold the pper support flp. 2 3

4 3 Connect the power cord nd telephone line Importnt DO NOT connect the USB cle yet (if you re using USB cle). Connect the power cord. If you re shring one telephone line with n externl telephone, connect it s shown elow. Before you connect the externl telephone, remove the protective cp from the EXT. jck on the mchine. 2 Connect the telephone line cord. Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the jck on the mchine mrked LINE nd the other end to modulr wll jck. Extension telephone 2 Externl telephone If you re shring one telephone line with n externl telephone nswering mchine, connect it s shown elow. Before you connect the externl telephone nswering mchine, remove the protective cp from the EXT. jck on the mchine. Importnt The telephone line cord MUST e connected to the jck on the mchine mrked LINE. Set the receive mode to Externl TAD if you hve n externl nswering mchine. See Choose the correct Receive Mode on pge 8. For dditionl detils, see Connecting n externl TAD (telephone nswering device) in Chpter 7 of the User s Guide. 4

5 4 Instll the ink crtridges e Turn the green kno on the protective yellow cp clockwise until it clicks to relese the vcuum sel, then remove the cp. WARNING If ink gets in your eyes, wsh them out with wter t once, nd if irrittion occurs consult doctor. Mke sure tht the power is turned on. The LCD shows: No Crtridge Open ink crtridge... Open the ink crtridge cover. c Remove the green protective prt. f Tke cre to mtch the color of the lever with the crtridge color, s shown in the digrm elow. 2 Do not throw wy the green protective prt. You will need it if you trnsport the mchine. d Unpck the ink crtridge. g Instll ech ink crtridge in the direction of the rrow on the lel. 5

6 h Gently push the ink crtridge until it clicks. After ll the ink crtridges re instlled close the ink crtridge cover. The mchine will prepre the ink tue system for printing. This process will tke pproximtely four minutes. Do not turn off the mchine. Importnt DO NOT tke out ink crtridges if you do not need to replce them. If you do so, it my reduce the ink quntity nd the mchine will not know the quntity of ink left in the crtridge. DO NOT shke the ink crtridges. If ink stins your skin or clothing, wsh with sop or detergent t once. DO NOT repetedly insert nd remove the crtridges. If you do so, ink my seep out of the crtridge. If you mix the colors y instlling n ink crtridge in the wrong position, clen the print hed severl times fter correcting the crtridge instlltion. (See Clening the print hed in Appendix B of the User s Guide.) Once you open n ink crtridge, instll it in the mchine nd use it up within six months of instlltion. Use unopened ink crtridges y the expirtion dte written on the crtridge pckge. DO NOT dismntle or tmper with the ink crtridge, this cn cuse the ink to lek out of the crtridge. Brother strongly recommends tht you do not refill the ink crtridges provided with your mchine. We lso strongly recommend tht you continue to use only Genuine Brother Brnd replcement ink crtridges. Using or ttempting to use potentilly incomptile inks nd/or crtridges in your mchine my cuse dmge to the mchine itself nd/or it my result in unstisfctory print qulity. Our wrrnty coverge does not pply to ny prolem tht ws cused y the use of unuthorized third prty ink nd/or crtridges. To protect your investment nd gurntee your print qulity plese continue to replce consumed ink crtridges with only Genuine Brother Brnded Supplies. 6

7 c 5 Check the print qulity When the preprtion process hs finished, the LCD shows this messge Set Pper nd Press Strt Press Color Strt. Check the qulity of the four color locks on the sheet. (lck/yellow/cyn/mgent) If ll lines re cler nd visile, press (Yes) on the dil pd to finish the qulity check. OK If you cn see missing short lines, press 2 (No) on the dil pd nd go to d. Poor d e f 6 Choose The LCD sks you if the print qulity is OK for lck nd color. Press Press (Yes) or 2 (No) on the dil pd. Blck OK?.Yes 2.No After pressing (Yes) or 2 (No) for oth lck nd color, the LCD shows: Strt Clening?.Yes 2.No Press (Yes), the mchine will then strt clening the colors. After clening is finished, press Color Strt. The mchine strts printing the Print Qulity Check Sheet gin. Go ck to. Press 0. c Press 0. d e your lnguge (If needed) Press Menu. Press or to choose your lnguge. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 7

8 7 Choose the correct Receive Mode The correct Receive Mode is determined y the externl devices nd telephone suscrier services (Voice Mil, Distinctive Ring, etc.) you hve (or will e using) on the sme line s the Brother mchine. Will you e using Distinctive Ring numer for receiving fxes? Brother uses the term "Distinctive Ring" ut telephone compnies my hve other nmes for this service such s Custom Ringing, RingMster, Personlized Ring, Teen Ring, Ident-A-Cll, nd Smrt Ring. See Distinctive Ring in Chpter 7 of the User's Guide for instruction on setting up your mchine using this feture. Will you e using Voicemil on the sme telephone line s your Brother mchine? If you hve Voice Mil on the sme telephone line s your Brother mchine, there is strong possiility tht Voice Mil nd the Brother mchine will conflict with ech other when receiving incoming clls. See Voice Mil in Chpter 7 of the User's Guide for instructions on setting up your mchine using this service. Will you e using Telephone Answering Device on the sme telephone line s your Brother mchine? Your externl telephone nswering device (TAD) will utomticlly nswer every cll. Voice messges re stored on the externl TAD nd fx messges re printed. Choose Externl TAD s your receive mode. See the instructions elow. Will you e using your Brother mchine on dedicted fx line? Your mchine utomticlly nswers every cll s fx. Choose Fx Only s your receive mode. See the instructions elow. Will you e using your Brother mchine on the sme line s your telephone? Do you wnt to receive voice clls nd fxes utomticlly? The Fx/Tel receive mode is used when shring the Brother mchine nd your telephone on the sme line. Choose Fx/Tel s your receive mode. See the instructions elow. Importnt : You cnnot receive voice messges on either Voice Mil or n nswering mchine when choosing the Fx/Tel mode. Do you expect to receive very few fxes? Choose Mnul s your receive mode. You control the phone line nd must nswer every cll yourself. See the instructions elow. Press. c Press 7. d Press or to choose Light or Drk. Select & OK Light The mchine displys the dte nd time, nd if you set up the sttion ID the dte nd time will e dded to ech fx you send. Press 0. c Press 2. d Press Menu. Enter the lst two digits of the yer on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Dte/Time Yer:2008 e (e.g. Enter 0 8 for 2008.) Enter the two digits for the month on the dil pd, nd then press OK. LCD Contrst Drk f Dte/Time Month:03 (e.g. Enter 0 3 for Mrch.) Enter the two digits for the dy on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Dte/Time Dy:0 g (e.g. Enter 0 for the first dy of the month.) Enter the time in 24-hour formt on the dil pd, nd then press OK. e f Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. h Dte/Time Time:5:25 (e.g. Enter 5, 2 5 for 3:25 P.M.) Press Stop/Exit. 9

10 0 Set your sttion ID You should store your nme nd fx numer to e printed on ll fx pges tht you send. Press 0. c Press 3. d e Press Menu. Enter your fx numer (up to 20 digits) on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Enter your nme (up to 20 chrcters) using the dil pd, nd then press OK. (USA only) The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 99 mkes it unlwful for ny person to use computer or electronic device to send ny messge vi telephone fx mchine unless such messges clerly contin, in mrgin t the top or ottom of ech trnsmitted pge, or on the first pge of the trnsmission, the dte nd time it is sent nd n identifiction of the usiness or other entity or other individul sending the messge nd the telephone numer of the sending mchines or such usiness, other entity or individul. See the following chrt for entering your nme. If you need to enter chrcter tht is on the sme key s the lst chrcter, press c to move the cursor to the right. If you entered letter incorrectly nd wnt to chnge it, press d or c to move the cursor to the incorrect chrcter, press Cler/Bck. f Press key One time Press Stop/Exit. 11 Set tone or pulse diling mode 2 Automtic Dylight Svings Time Your mchine comes set for Tone diling service. If you hve Pulse diling service (rotry), you need to chnge the diling mode. Press 0. c Press 4. d e Press Menu. Press or to choose Pulse (or Tone). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. You cn set the mchine to chnge utomticlly for dylight svings time. It will reset itself forwrd one hour in the Spring nd ckwrd one hour in the Fll. Press. c Press 5. d e Press Menu. Press or to choose On (or Off). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit.

12 3 Send in the Product Registrtion nd Test Sheet (USA only) You cn lso register your product online using the On-Line Registrtion link from the instlltion CD-ROM or visit e Press Blck Strt. You will receive confirmtion fx of your Product Registrtion. Fill out the Product Registrtion nd Test Sheet. Put the sheet fce up in the ADF (Automtic Document Feeder) or fce down on the scnner glss. c Mke sure (Fx) is illuminted in Blue. d Enter the toll-free fx numer:

Importnt DO NOT connect the USB cle yet. If there re ny progrms running, close them. Mke sure there re no memory crds or USB Flsh memory drive inserted. The screen my differ depending on the operting system. The supplied CD-ROM includes ScnSoft PperPort SE. This softwre supports Windows 2000 (SP4 or greter), XP (SP2 or greter), XP Professionl x64 Edition nd Windows Vist. Updte to the ltest Windows Service Pck efore instlling MFL-Pro Suite. Unplug the mchine from the AC outlet nd from your computer, if you lredy connected n interfce cle. Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme screen ppers, choose your mchine. If the lnguge screen ppers, choose your lnguge. If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click strt.exe. The CD-ROM min menu will pper. Click Initil Instlltion. c Click Instll MFL-Pro Suite. 4

15 USB If this screen ppers, click OK nd restrt your computer. g Windows Choose Locl Connection, nd then click Next. The instlltion continues. If the instlltion does not continue utomticlly, open the min menu gin y ejecting nd then reinserting the CD-ROM or doule-click the strt.exe progrm from the root folder, nd continue from to instll MFL- Pro Suite. For Windows Vist, when the User Account Control screen ppers, click Allow. h When this screen ppers, go to the next step. d When the ScnSoft PperPort SE License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the Softwre License Agreement. USB Windows Mcintosh e f The instlltion of ScnSoft PperPort SE will utomticlly strt nd is followed y the instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Softwre License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the Softwre License Agreement. 5

16 USB Windows 7 Connect the USB cle c Crefully route the USB cle through the trench nd out the ck of the mchine s shown elow nd connect the cle to your computer. Importnt DO NOT connect the mchine to USB port on keyord or non-powered USB hu. Connect the mchine directly to your computer. Lift the scnner cover until it locks securely into the open position. Connect the USB cle to the USB socket mrked with symol. You will find the USB socket inside the mchine on the right s shown elow. Importnt Mke sure tht the cle does not restrict the cover from closing, or n error my occur. d Lift the scnner cover to relese the lock. Gently push the scnner cover support down nd close the scnner cover c using oth hnds. 2 3 LAN USB 6

17 USB Windows Connect the power cord Finish nd restrt 8 Connect the power cord. The instlltion will continue utomticlly. The instlltion screens pper one fter nother. 9 Click Finish to restrt your computer. After restrting the computer, you must e logged on with Administrtor rights. Importnt DO NOT cncel ny of the screens during the instlltion. It my tke few seconds for ll screens to pper. If n error messge ppers during the softwre instlltion, run the Instlltion Dignostics locted in Strt/All Progrms/Brother/ MFC-XXXX (where MFC-XXXX is your model nme). Finish The instlltion is now complete. USB Windows Mcintosh For Windows Vist, when this screen ppers, click the check ox nd click Instll to complete the instlltion correctly. Now go to Proceed to Instll Optionl Applictions on pge 30. When the On-Line Registrtion screen is displyed, mke your selection nd follow the on-screen instructions. Once you hve completed the registrtion process, close your we rowser to return to this window. Then click Next. 7

18 USB Mcintosh For USB Interfce Users (For Mc OS X or greter) 5 Before you instll Mke sure your mchine is connected to the power nd your Mcintosh is ON. You must e logged on with Administrtor rights. Importnt For Mc OS X to users, upgrde to Mc OS X or greter. (For the ltest informtion for Mc OS X, visit Mke sure there re no memory crds or USB Flsh memory drive inserted. Connect the USB cle to the USB socket mrked with symol. You will find the USB socket inside the mchine on the right s shown elow. LAN USB 6 Connect the USB cle c Crefully route the USB cle through the trench nd out the ck of the mchine s shown elow nd connect the cle to your Mcintosh. Importnt DO NOT connect the mchine to USB port on keyord or non-powered USB hu. Connect the mchine directly to your Mcintosh. Lift the scnner cover until it locks securely into the open position. 19 USB Mcintosh 7 Instll MFL-Pro Suite e For Mc OS X to users, click Add. Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. f Choose USB. c Doule-click the Strt Here OSX icon to instll. Plese wit, it will tke few seconds for the softwre to instll. After the instlltion, click Restrt to finish instlling the softwre. The Brother softwre will serch for the Brother device. During this time the following screen will pper. g h Choose XXX-XXXX (where XXX-XXXX is your model nme), nd then click Add. Click Print Center, then Quit Print Center. USB Windows Mcintosh d When this screen ppers, click OK. For Mc OS X 0.3.x or greter, the instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite is now complete. Go to step 8 on pge 20. 20 USB Mcintosh 8 Instll Presto! PgeMnger When Presto! PgeMnger is instlled OCR cpility is dded to Brother ControlCenter2. You cn esily scn, shre nd orgnize photos nd documents using Presto! PgeMnger. Doule-click the Presto! PgeMnger icon nd follow the on-screen instructions. For Mc OS X to users, when this screen ppers, click Go to downlod the softwre from the Brother Solutions Center wesite. Finish The instlltion is now complete. 20

If oth USB nd LAN cles re eing used, guide oth cles through the trench with one on top of the other. Importnt Mke sure tht the cle does not restrict the cover from closing, or n error my occur. d Lift the scnner cover to relese the lock. Gently push the scnner cover support down nd close the scnner cover c using oth hnds. 8 Instll MFL-Pro Suite Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme screen ppers, choose your mchine. If the lnguge screen ppers, choose your lnguge. 2 3 If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click strt.exe. 22

Click Initil Instlltion. d When the ScnSoft PperPort SE License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the Softwre License Agreement. c Click Instll MFL-Pro Suite. e f The instlltion of ScnSoft PperPort SE will utomticlly strt nd is followed y the instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Softwre License Agreement window ppers, click Yes if you gree to the Softwre License Agreement. If this screen ppers, click OK nd restrt your computer. If the instlltion does not continue utomticlly, open the min menu gin y ejecting nd then reinserting the CD-ROM or doule-click the strt.exe progrm from the root folder, nd continue from to instll MFL- Pro Suite. 24 h Wired Network For Windows XP SP2/Windows Vist users, when this screen ppers, choose Chnge the Firewll port settings to enle network connection nd continue with the instlltion. (Recommended) nd click Next. Windows If the mchine is configured for your network, choose the mchine from the list, nd then click Next. This window will not pper if there is only one mchine connected on the network, it will e chosen utomticlly. If you re using firewll other thn Windows Firewll or Windows Firewll is off, this screen my pper. See the instructions provided with your firewll softwre for informtion on how to dd the following network ports. For network scnning, dd UDP port For network PC-Fx receiving, dd UDP port If you still hve troule with your network connection, dd UDP port 37. i If your mchine shows APIPA in the IP Address field, click Configure IP Address nd enter n IP ddress for your mchine tht is suitle for your network. If the mchine is not yet configured for use on your network, the following screen ppers. Click OK. The Configure IP Address window will pper. Enter n IP ddress for your mchine tht is suitle for your network y following the on-screen instructions. The instlltion of the Brother drivers will utomticlly strt. The instlltion screens pper one fter nother. Importnt DO NOT cncel ny of the screens during the instlltion. It my tke few seconds for ll screens to pper. 24

25 Wired Network Windows For Windows Vist, when this screen ppers, click the check ox nd click Instll to complete the instlltion correctly. 9 Finish nd restrt Click Finish to restrt your computer. After restrting the computer, you must e logged on with Administrtor rights. j When the On-Line Registrtion screen is displyed, mke your selection nd follow the on-screen instructions. Once you hve completed the registrtion process, close your we rowser to return to this window. Then click Next. If n error messge ppers during the softwre instlltion, run the Instlltion Dignostics locted in Strt/All Progrms/Brother/ MFC-XXXX (where MFC-XXXX is your model nme). 20 Instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl computers (If needed) If you wnt to use your mchine with multiple computers on the network, instll MFL-Pro Suite on ech computer. Go to step 8 on pge 22. Also see step 5- on pge 2 efore you instll. The MFL-Pro Suite Softwre License permits instlltion on up to 2 network computers. if you wnt to instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl computers, you cn purchse dditionl NL-5 (five user) license greements from your uthorized Brother deler or contct Brother customer service. 27 Wired Network Mcintosh 7 Instll MFL-Pro Suite Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the mchine is configured for your network, choose the mchine from the list, nd then click OK. This window will not pper if there is only one mchine connected on the network, it will e chosen utomticlly. Go to d. Doule-click the Strt Here OSX icon to instll. If this screen ppers click OK. Enter nme for your Mcintosh in Disply Nme up to 5 chrcters long nd click OK. Go to d. c Plese wit, it will tke few seconds for the softwre to instll. After the instlltion, click Restrt to finish instlling the softwre. The Brother softwre will serch for the Brother device. During this time the following screen will pper. d If you wnt to use the mchine s Scn key to scn over the network you must check the Register your computer with the Scn To function on the mchine ox. The nme you enter will pper on the mchine s LCD when you press the Scn key nd choose scn option. (For more informtion, see Network Scnning in the Softwre User s Guide on the CD-ROM.)
