1 via Citrix Remote Access (formally Domains Supported: Medschl Platforms Supported: Any Introduction With Citrix Remote Access you have browser-based access to a Virtual Desktop running Windows 7, Office 2013 and other business orientated applications. Your account, profile, desktop, documents, home and group drives are all loaded automatically, making this an exceptionally simple solution to working off-site. Citrix Remote Desktop costs 4 per month and requires you to install a software application called Citrix Receiver on the PC you wish to connect from. CSCS supported computers have Citrix Receiver pre-installed. Apply for Citrix Remote Desktop with the Online Form Requirements Citrix Remote Desktop is available only for departments in the School of Clinical Medicine You must have applied for the service You will need a reasonably fast internet connection A device capable of running Citrix Receiver - this list changes as Citrix update the software, so check this list for supported computer operating systems: Guide for Desktops - Windows, Ubuntu and Mac OSX Devices Although the version of Citrix Receiver that will need to be installed is different, the process for accessing Mints@Home through a web-page is identical. Browse to If this is the first time that you are using Citrix on this computer, you may need to install Citrix Receiver. You will be prompted to install the software and a direct link to the Receiver has been included on our login page. Alternatively the version of Receiver can be downloaded from Once the Receiver software has been downloaded you may then need to install and activate it which may require an administrator password. 3. Enter your MINTS username and password and click Log On. 4. Once you have logged in, you will be presented with a list of the Applications that are available to you. To view the list of Desktops, select Desktops at the bottom of the page

2 5. Click on the application or desktop that you want, and then it will be launched. Depending on your web browser and its settings, you may be prompted to open the Citrix receiver launcher. If you see a window like the one below, please click the Open Citrix Receiver Launcher button (hilighted in yellow) You may also be prompted that the Citrix Receiver plugin is disabled or blocked, often with an option to allow it to run. Please click allow/trust as appropriate to start the application. When you have finished using Citrix, click your name and then Log Off from the top right hand corner. Please note that you will also be automatically logged out after a period of inactivity. Guide for ios, Android and Windows 8 Devices You are able to use the Mints@Home environment from mobile devices including tablets. Some applications are not well designed for touch devices or smaller displays, but in the majority of cases the applications will work.the guide below is reasonably generic. Although the process may be slightly different for each device, the principals and prompts should be the same. Images in the guide below were taken from an Android device. The images may not be exactly the same on your device. Download and install the Citrix Receiver application from the App Store. a. Apple Store: b. Google Play Store: c. Windows Store: Open the application. Select the option to Add Account. Enter 'anywhere.medschl.cam.ac.uk.

3 3. You will be asked to name the account and provide login details. Enter your username and password. In the Domain field, type 'MINTS 4. The account will be added to your device and will be listed in the available accounts. 5. Tap the account to log in. Enter your password if requested. The available applications will be listed.

4 6. Tap an application to launch it. In the example below we have launched Notepad Use the pull down menu from the top to use the mouse and control the session. Your session should have popped up at some point to tell you how to use gestures and interact with the remote session using your device. I am having problems. What information do you need to help me? We generally recommend that you have the latest version of Citrix Receiver installed for the device that you are using. This will enable the latest features and provide you with the best user experience. You can download the latest version of Citrix Receiver from here: / If you have any issues accessing the service or with an application or desktop that you are using, there is some information that you can send us which will enable us to look into your problem. The operating system of the computer that you are using The version of Citrix Receiver that you have installed. Finding the Citrix Receiver version on Microsoft Windows To find this, right click the receiver icon in your system tray and select About or Advanced Preferences (this depends on the version that is currently installed)

5 or Finding the Citrix Receiver version on Apple Mac OSX The icon for Citrix Receiver should be on the command bar in the top right hand corner near the clock. Right click the icon and then select About Finding the Citrix Receiver version on Ubuntu

6 Open the Ubuntu Software Centre. Select the down arrow to the right of Installed at the top and select the Unknown category. Select the Citrix Receiver for Linux. The version number is listed at the bottom of the page. The time that you are trying to access the system. FAQ: I get a warning about accessing information on device attached to your computer. When you start an application or a desktop, you may get a Security Warning similar to the one below:

7 This warning is normal, and is expected. Through you have the option to use remote applications to access files and folders on your computer. If you want to be able to access files on your computer from your remote session, the click Allow or Permit Use. FAQ: Windows XP Support Citrix support for Windows XP stopped on the 8th April In our limited testing we found the following configuration to work: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 9 or Mozilla Firefox 35 Citrix Receiver Although we have tested the above configuration, we are unable to provide any support. FAQ: I lost my connection. How long will I stay logged on for? If you lose your connection (e.g. through an internet problem) or close a desktop session without logging off, your session will remain active for 75 minutes. After this time you will be logged off automatically. Active sessions will not be disconnected. We are unable to guarantee that unsaved work will be recoverable if you are logged off automatically, as it depends on the application. We recommend that you save your work and log off as soon as you have finished working. FAQ: When connecting to the desktop, I get a 'The connection to 'desktop' failed with status (1110)'

8 This error is fairly generic and can be caused by a number of things. Please try: 3. Clear you temporary files and/or internet cache. Each browser is slightly different, but typically you go into Options, and look for Clear Internet Cache or Clear Temporary Internet Files. Ensure that you have the latest version of the Citrix Receiver installed Ensure that the Citrix Receiver has been enabled in your browser. See details below in the other FAQs. FAQ: When I try to access my Hermes Mail through Outlook I get an error. If you have your Hermes mail configured through Outlook on your computer, and you try and access it through Outlook on Mints@Home, you will receive an error similar to: This is because the file that contains your is stored on your computer in the office, and is not available to the Mints@Home service. There is no workaround to this. Access to Hermes mail through Mints@Home is only supported through webmail. Hermes webmail can be accessed at the following address: We recommend that you use our service for full compatibility with Mints@Home. We can modify your account so s sent from you look like the have originated from address and you can have all sent to address forwarded to our mail system. If you would like more information on this or help in setting this up, please contact our service desk. FAQ: I am using Google Chrome. How do I access my applications? Support for Google Chrome has been added in Citrix Receiver 4.3 and was supported by CSCS from 28th September Please ensure that you have downloaded the latest version of the Citrix Receiver software. FAQ: How do I enable Citrix Receiver in Microsoft Internet Explorer? Internet Explorer is only supported on the Microsoft Windows platform. In Internet Explorer, after you have installed Citrix Receiver you still get a prompt asking you to install the Receiver, similar to this:

9 This is because Internet Explorer blocks the new plugin by default and it will need to be enabled. To do this: Open Internet Explorer Select the Settings cog in the top right corner and then click Manage Add-Ons 3. Select Show: All Add-Ons in the bottom left corner of the dialog box 4. Select the Citrix Receiver and ensure that the status says Enabled. There is an Enable/Disable button in the bottom right corner to change the status 5. Click Close FAQ: In Mozilla Firefox, I get asked to download an ICA file when I launch an application. Can they launch automatically? Yes. By default Firefox does not know what to do with the file that launches the application. You can change a setting in your browser to allow Firefox to launch the application or desktop automatically. To do this: Open Firefox. Click the Preferences menu in the top right corner and then select Options

10 3. Select Applications on the left hand side 4. Find 'Citrix ICA Client' in the list of applications and change the setting to 'Use Citrix Receiver (in Firefox)' 5. Close the tab to close the options page. FAQ: Do I have to install the Citrix Receiver software on my computer? Yes. FAQ: I have multiple monitors. Can my remote session use multiple monitors? Yes. To do this you need to make your remote window span both monitors before clicking maximise. Drag the remote window so that it is split across both monitors, like the green rectangle in the drawing below, then click the maximise button.

11 This feature requires that you have specific versions of Citrix Receiver installed. If you are unsure, download the latest version of Receiver from the Citrix website here: Windows: 4.0 or higher OSX: 15 or higher Linux 13.0 or higher FAQ: An application that I want is not available. Can it be added? This is not a simple yes or no answer. There is a lot of factors to consider, including but not limited to the licensing terms of the application, what the application does and its hardware requirements. If you have an idea for an application that you think would be useful, then please log a ticket with our Service Desk. We can then evaluate the application and get back to you with an answer. If we approve an application for addition to the service, then it will be included in the next scheduled update session. FAQ: I get a prompt about updates for an application. Do I need to do anything? No. We have a planned monthly update session where we will check for and apply updates to the operating system and applications that are available. Updates will be deployed on the last Tuesday of each month. FAQ: How can I connect to a computer on the Clinical School network? Once you have logged in to Mints@Home and are on Step 4 above you can select the Remote Desktop Connection application to connect to a computer on the School's network (Some setup is required on the computer if you have never used this feature before). When prompted enter: The computer name (e.g. gppc399) or IP address. If using the computer name, you may need to add.medschl.cam.ac.uk or.medlan.cam.ac.uk to the end (e.g. gppc399.medschl.cam.ac.uk). Your user name with a mints/ before it. e.g. mints/aaa.111 and then click Connect

12 FAQ: When using Citrix Receiver on Mac OSX 10.9 (Mavericks), my connection is being lost intermittently. In OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) a new feature called App Nap was introduced, which enables the computer to save energy when the application is minimised. This pausing of the application causes the Citrix Receiver to disconnect from the server. To disable App Nap for the Citrix Receiver: 3. Open Citrix Receiver Hold down the command key and press I In the application details window that appears, check the box to 'Prevent App Nap' FAQ: When using the Remote Desktop Connection app in Full Screen, Alt+Tab does not switch between Windows

13 This is the default behavior of the Citrix Receiver. In order to change this behavior you must have the permissions to edit the Registry on your computer. To change this behavior: Open regedit and change the following key: For 32-bit OS: a. The Alt+Tab key combination will now work.
