1 HARRISON STREET SUBSTATION UPGRADE AND MODERNIZATION Presentation to ANC 3E April 13,
2 PURPOSE AND NEED We are committed to providing reliable electric service to our customers. As part of this commitment, we are upgrading and modernizing the Harrison Street Substation in the Friendship Heights area of the District of Columbia The existing Harrison Street Substation has been in service since the 1940s and is nearing its maximum capacity While the facility has undergone regular maintenance and upgrades over the years, the infrastructure and some of the equipment have reached the end of their intended service life and require upgrades The modernization and upgrade will enhance system reliability for customers throughout the service area 2
3 PROJECT SUMMARY The Harrison Street Substation is currently providing electric service to the area The Project involves transferring the electric load from Harrison Street Substation to the temporary equipment so that it can provide electric service to the area during the upgrade demolishing the interior of the existing substation upgrading and modernizing the Harrison Street Substation putting the newly upgraded substation back in service removing the temporary electrical equipment final site work landscaping in front of the substation along Wisconsin Avenue 3
4 BENEFITS TO THE COMMUNITY An upgraded Harrison Street Substation will provide several direct and indirect benefits to customers as well as to the community, including: enhancing the reliability of service ensuring we can meet the community s growing energy needs providing a state-of-the art substation that is quieter and highly efficient enhancing the aesthetics of the building by enclosing the substation to conceal equipment upgrading the façade of the building along Wisconsin Avenue, NW 4
5 In 2011, we purchased the property at 5220 Wisconsin Avenue, formerly Classic Motors In 2013, we undertook site preparation of the new lot, constructing an entrance, completing site remediation and grading , extensive infrastructure work was conducted to support the modernization of the Harrison Street Substation, including overhead and underground distribution upgrades conversion of feeders from 4kV to 13kV alleviating 4kV load from the Harrison Substation by transferring some electrical load to neighboring substations BACKGROUND 5
