4 Sectin 1 Executive Summary This paper cmpares the Micrsft Exchange 2000 scalability and perfrmance f tw backend Dell PwerEdge 6650 fur-prcessr servers cnnected t a Dell / EMC CX600 Strage Area Netwrk (SAN) with that f a Hewlett- Packard (HP) DL740 eight- prcessr server cnnected t the same SAN. The Micrsft LadSim 2000 tl using the MMB2 prfile was used t simulate Outlk users. Tests were run by Dell Labs in July 2003 at varius MMB2 wrklads n the PwerEdge 6650 systems and the HP DL740 with the same hardware and sftware cnfiguratins; see Sectin 3 fr details. Results Running n Windws 2000 Advanced Server, the tw 4-way PwerEdge systems were able t utperfrm the single 8-way HP system with a higher maximum wrklad and lwer prcessr utilizatin: The PwerEdge 6650 servers were able t sustain a maximum f 24,000 simulated Outlk users, with an average prcessr utilizatin f 59.51%. The HP DL740 server was able t sustain a maximum f 14,000 simulated Outlk users, with an average prcessr utilizatin f 61.4 %. The cmbinatin f tw fur-prcessr PwerEdge 6650 servers handled a 71.4% greater wrklad than the eight-prcessr HP DL740, with an average f 4% less prcessr utilizatin, as shwn in Table 4. 5 Sectin 2 Intrductin This paper discusses the results f perfrmance and scalability testing f tw Dell fur-prcessr Micrsft Exchange 2000 Servers running in a distributed messaging envirnment as cmpared t that f a single Hewlett Packard eightprcessr system als running Micrsft Exchange The tests cmpare tw Dell PwerEdge 6650 servers cnfigured with fur prcessrs cnnected t a Dell/EMC CX600 Strage Area Netwrk (SAN) against a HP DL740 server cnfigured with eight prcessrs and cnnected t the same Dell/ EMC CX600 SAN. As messaging, database, r web serving wrklad demands increase in tday s business envirnment, tw cmmn appraches are typically used t satisfy the need fr mre prcessing and I/O capacity. One apprach, cmmnly knwn as scale up, uses a mnlithic mdel: the wrklad is cncentrated n a single server that cntains eight r mre prcessrs. While this apprach can satisfy immediate and near-term prcessing needs, scale up can lck IT departments int cstly systems that ften d nt have the lgical r gegraphical dexterity required t meet rapidly changing business needs. Anther apprach, knwn as scale ut, uses a mdular mdel: the wrklad is distributed amng a number f smaller servers with ne, tw, r fur prcessrs. Dell believes that this apprach prvides a dynamic and dexterus architecture f affrdable, smaller servers fr a cst effective, industry-standard way t address cnstantly evlving business cmputing requirements. As the remainder f this paper will shw, a distributed, r scale ut apprach t prviding maximum Exchange 2000 Server perfrmance and scalability can be achieved while respnding t increasing cmputing demands. 6 Sectin 3 Test Envirnment Nte: T fcus n measuring perfrmance and scalability at the prcessr level, the strage subsystem used fr the testing was designed t reduce I/O related bttlenecks. General Test Envirnment fr Bth Setups While RAID 10 r RAID 5 are cmmn fault tlerant ptins fr databases and transactin lgs, the additinal latency inherent with fault tlerant RAID subsystems can begin t surface as a perfrmance bttleneck under heavier wrklads. Fr all the test cases, RAID 0 was implemented fr the database and transactin lg LUNs, s that any ptential resurce bttlenecks shifted t the prcessrs. Micrsft Windws 2000 Advanced Server, Active Directry, Exchange 2000 Server Enterprise Editin, and Netwrk Adapter settings were als cnfigured 1 s as t minimize any ther ptential bttlenecks. Fr bth the HP DL740 and the PwerEdge 6650 test cases, the default LadSim 2000 MMB2 prfile was used t create a LadSim Cntainer with simulated Outlk users spread amng server(s) and distributin list(s). All Exchange Servers supprted tw strage grups and a ttal f fur mail databases and tw transactin lgs. Public Flder infrmatin was hused in ne f the database LUNs n each server. Active Directry was run n a Dell PwerEdge 1650, a 1U, dual prcessr server cnfigured with 4GB RAM, an embedded gigabit 2 netwrk adapter, and tw Intel 1.4GHz 256MB L2 cache prcessrs. Windws 2000 Advanced Server and the Active Directry Database and Lgs were hused n a RAID 1 mirrr cntrlled by the embedded PERC 3/Di RAID cntrller. The third disk in the PwerEdge 1650 was dedicated as a ht spare. Each f the Dell Exchange 2000 Servers used hardware RAID 1 cntainers fr the perating system and Exchange files. All the servers and clients, as shwn in Figures 1 and 2, were intercnnected via a Dell PwerCnnect 5224 managed Gigabit Ethernet switch. 7 duplex t minimize any netwrk related latencies. All clients were cnnected at 100Mbps full duplex. Architecture Layut fr a Single HP DL740 Eight-Way Intel Xen MP Server The hardware cnfiguratin fr the HP DL740 server is shwn in Table 1. The majr hardware and sftware setup is as described under the general test envirnment sectin. The Dell/EMC CX600 and Exchange Strage design fr the HP DL740 setup is described belw. Dell/EMC CX600 and Exchange Strage Design Layut fr DL740 Setup Twenty-fur disks cntained in tw Dell/EMC FC2 disk array enclsures (DAE2) were rganized int tw LUNs f twelve drives each and allcated fr the transactin lgs. Each LUN supprted ne dynamic NTFS vlume per transactin Lg. A ttal f 120 drives 3 cntained in eight DAE2 enclsures were allcated fr the database vlumes fr a ttal f eight LUNs. Fur dynamic NTFS vlumes were spanned acrss the eight LUNs prviding each Infrmatin Stre database with 30 drives. 3 Drives fr all cnfiguratins were 10K FC2. The Dell/EMC CX600 and Exchange Strage design fr the tw-nde setup is described belw. The hardware cnfiguratin fr each PwerEdge 6650 server is shwn in Table 2. 9 The tw PwerEdge 6650 servers in each f the test cases were cnnected t the Dell/EMC CX600 SAN as shwn in Figure 2 Dell/EMC CX600 and Exchange Strage Design Layut fr the Tw-Nde PwerEdge 6650 Setup Using Access Lgix t prvide LUN masking between the tw hsts, tw strage grups were created and assigned t each hst PwerEdge 6650 server. Fr details abut Access Lgix, visit: Within each strage grup, ne DAE2 hsted a twelve-drive LUN that was used t create tw dynamic NTFS vlumes t supprt each Exchange 2000 server s Transactin Lgs. The remaining eight DAE2s were allcated evenly between the tw strage grups s that each hst had 60 drives available fr fur 15 drive database LUNs. Frm the fur LUNs per hst, fur dynamic NTFS vlumes were created t supprt each f the mail databases. 10 Sectin 4 Perfrmance Analysis The first part f this sectin prvides an verview f the HP DL740 perfrmance at 12,000 t 14,000 simulated Outlk users 4 with eight physical prcessrs. The secnd part f this sectin fcuses n the scalability and perfrmance f the tw PwerEdge 6650 servers as the wrklad increased. HP DL740 Sme key Exchange Server and Operating System Perfrmance Mnitr (Perfmn) data are used t demnstrate critical applicatin and server health parameters and t determine at what pint sustainable messaging wrklads are n lnger pssible. Prcessr Utilizatin, the Infrmatin Stre and SMTP Lcal Queue Lengths, and the 95 th Percentile 5 respnse times are sme f the key metrics used fr this cmparative analysis. At 14,000 MMB2s, the HP DL740 system, strage and Exchange perfrmance was healthy, but at the limits f sustainable messaging thrughput during the test. A lengthy duratin f high Infrmatin Stre and SMTP Lcal Queue Lengths drve up the prcessr time and 95 th Percentile respnse time. The trend in Table 3 shws 4 LadSim 2000 simulates Outlk user actins and prfiles representing varius prcessing wrklad scenaris th Percentile respnse time is a measurement used t determine hw quickly the Exchange 2000 Server respnds t the LadSim 2000 client actins. 11 that as the wrklad increased frm 13,000 t 14,000, the 95 th Percentile latency apprximately dubled. Als, the trend cntinued fr the MS Exchange IS Mailbx Send Queue size. The queue nearly tripled when increasing the number f simulated Outlk users frm 13,000 t 14,000, while the SMTP lcal queue length increased mre than five fld. The Active Directry prcessr utilizatin remained lw acrss all three wrklad sizes. Nte: The HP DL740 was als tested at 16,600 simulated Outlk users. At this wrklad, the server maintained a healthy messaging state fr ne hur. Beynd that, the SMTP Lcal Queue Length grew t values ver 60,000. The prcessr utilizatin at this wrklad was 98%, and that, cmbined with the high SMTP Lcal Queue Length, indicated that sustainable messaging thrughput at 16,600 MMB2 was nt supprted. Tw-Nde Dell PwerEdge 6650 The tw PwerEdge 6650 systems demnstrated healthy perfrmance as the wrklad was increased frm 12,000 t 24,000 MMB2s. The entries in Table 4 represent the average values acrss bth servers in the tw-nde, r scale ut mdel. Table 4 als shws a cmparisn f data at a 14,000 user wrklad fr the twnde mdel with Hyper-Threading Technlgy turned n and ff. 6 Hyper- Threading (HT) Technlgy is a technlgy frm Intel that allws fr better use f prcessr resurces. As can be seen frm Table 4, server perfrmance can be enhanced with Hyper-Threading Technlgy n. 7 Nte: The perating system used in this testing, Windws 2000 Advanced Server, can address up t eight prcessrs. Hwever, in rder t take advantage f Hyper-Threading technlgy with the HP eight-prcessr server, it wuld have been necessary t use a different and mre expensive perating system, Windws 2000 Datacenter Server, t address the virtual 16 prcessrs that wuld be created by Hyper-Threading. 13 Sectin 5 Cmparative Perfrmance and Scalability T establish a baseline fr cmparative testing, bth the HP and Dell servers were run at varius wrklads with the same hardware and sftware cnfiguratins. The tw Dell PwerEdge 6650 servers with a ttal f eight physical prcessrs were cmpared t the HP DL740 at 12,000 MMB2s. This cmparative examinatin was dne at 12,000 and 14,000 MMB2s because at these wrklads, bth the HP DL740 and the tw PwerEdge 6650s were in a healthy state with relatively lw message queue lengths and prcessr utilizatin. Figure 3 and Figure 4 shw that with a similar wrklad, the prcessr utilizatin, SMTP Lcal Queue Lengths, MS Exchange IS Mailbx Send Queue Size, and 95 percentile latency numbers, are lwer fr the scale-ut mdel (tw PwerEdge 6650s) as ppsed t the scale-up example (ne eight-prcessr DL740). These parameters demnstrate that at 12,000 and 14,000 MMB2s, the tw PwerEdge 6650 servers can supprt the same wrklad with lwer values fr the key metrics shwn in Figure 3 and Figure 4. These results favr a greater wrklad as well as a sustainable increase in wrklad n the tw PwerEdge 6650 servers versus the ne HP DL740, as shwn by the testing results in Table 4. 12,000 MMB2 Simulated Outlk Users Avg. 15 Sectin 6 Scale Out Exchange 2000 Design Advantages In additin t supprting mre simulated Outlk users per server with lwer CPU utilizatin and 95 th Percentile respnse times, the fllwing design advantages were shwn fr Exchange 2000 Server deplyments running n Windws 2000 Advanced Server when leveraging the scale ut mdel by this test: Distributed wrklads had lwer latency. Distributed wrklads prvided higher messaging thrughput. Other ptential benefits include: Extensible and mdular design can be easily matched t supprt Active Directry and IP Site tplgies, cnnectrs and Exchange Organizatinal and Ruting Grup bundaries. Distributed ndes with tw t fur prcessrs are mre clsely matched with the Exchange 2000 memry architecture, as systems with mre than fur prcessrs typically need greater memry t supprt thse prcessrs, but Exchange nly makes use f 2.8GB f RAM per server. If tw ndes are set up as a failver cluster, this can help prevent the lss f all data in the event f a server failure. The ther nde can take respnsibility fr the failed server. The fur-prcessr servers were able t make use f Intel s Hyper- Threading technlgy, which is designed t enable fur physical prcessrs t virtually d the wrk f eight prcessrs, using Windws Advanced Server And while Windws 2000 Advanced Server can address up t eight prcessrs, it is necessary t use Windws 2000 Data Center t take advantage f Hyper-Threading technlgy with eightprcessr servers t address the virtual 16 prcessrs that wuld be created by Hyper-Threading. Lcalized DSAccessCache instances can help reduce Active Directry utilizatin (each server can have its wn cache, rather than all users dependent n single server cache). 16 Sectin 7 Cnclusin This paper reviews the cncepts f scale-ut and scale-up server architecture mdels, and presents the results f perfrmance and scalability testing f these mdels. The test design and layuts are defined fr tw fur-prcessr Dell PwerEdge 6650 servers and ne eight-prcessr HP DL740 server t demnstrate the scale-ut and scale-up mdels. The results f testing dne by Dell labs help t demnstrate the perfrmance and scalability superirity f a scale-ut apprach fr Micrsft Exchange 2000 messaging envirnments when using the Windws 2000 Advanced Server OS. The perfrmance analysis sectin shws the baseline perfrmance f the tw mdels using key metrics, including: prcessr utilizatin, Micrsft Exchange IS Mailbx send queue size, SMTP lcal queue length, and 95 th percentile respnse time. As the wrklad increased n the PwerEdge 6650 scale-ut mdel, it demnstrated a scaling factr f 1.71 versus the HP DL740 server. Sectin 6 details the many ptential advantages f using a scale-ut mdel beynd the scaling factr, a decrease in prcessr utilizatin, and server respnse time.
