3 HEWLETT PACKARD PC NETWORKING ALTERNATIVES Hewlett-Packard ffers a variety f PC netwrking prducts that allw PCs t be cnnected t ne anther as well as t an HP In a PC netwrk, either a PC r an HP 3000 can be used as a server. The benefit f a netwrk is that users can share data and peripherals. This sharing results in cst savings and/r rganizatinal efficiencies. The fur ptins presented here assume that an HP 3000 is already installed and perating in an existing data prcessing envirnment. These ptins build upn this envirnment and further utilize the multi-tasking capabilities f the HP 3 '00 cmputer. These netwrking strategies represent thse cnfiguratins mst f:equently used in an ffice envirnment and address a multitude f PC r~twrking needs. Optins #1, #2, and #3 basically ffer the same capabilities; shared disc, shared printers, shared files, and the ability t perfrm tape back-ups f all disc drives. Optin #4, which is nt a netwrk, ffers shared printers and shared files. All fur ptins vary in price, perfrmance (speed), and capabilities. In rder t cmpare these strategies, a sample cnfiguratin is presented fr each ptin which assumes that tw departments r wrk grups are implementing a PC netwrk, and that each grup f PCs has access t an HP 3000 Series 70. While these strategies are described separately, the final netwrking cnfiguratin fr a particular rganizatin may be a cmbinatin f ne r mre f these ptins. In rder t determine which ptin is best, additinal infrmatin will need t be gathered. This infrmatin includes disc and print vlumes, tasks perfrmed mst frequently (e.g. wrd prcessing, graphics etc.), physical dimensins f the building(s), expected grwth, budget, and the imprtance f speed, versus functinality, versus supprt. Nne f these ptins address specific sftware needs. Again, mre infrmatin will need t be gathered t recmmend specific packages. Hwever, each ptin includes Hewlett-Packard's mst ppular PC applicatin bundles, the Vectra Office Prfessinal. This bundle includes an easy t use wrd prcessr, graphics, a database applicatin, a spreadsheet applicatin, and a terminal emulatr. It is imprtant that this paper be used nly as a guideline in determining a PC netwrking strategy due t the many issues surrunding the implementatin f PC netwrks. Because Hewlett-Packard is cmmitted t the lng-term success f each f its custmers, it is strngly recmmended that custmers cnsidering the implementatin f a PC netwrk wrk clsely with the Hewlett Packard supprt team t ensure maximum success

4 OPTION #1: ADD-ON MICRO 3000GX AS A SERVER (Business System 3000 with Business System Plus Sftware) The Business System 3000 (MICRO 3000GX) is a cmplete entry level integrated business system which is ideal fr departmental applicatins where lcal area netwrking and PC integratin is desired. In this cnfiguratin, the HP MICRO 3000 mi~i"mputer acts as a server t PCs which are cnnected via twisted pair type ca )1. ng (HP StarlAN). PC users have access t all f the MICRO 3000GX' s peripherals inc~uding printers, discs, pltters, and tape drives. Users can have private a~j shared PC files n the MICRO 3000GX, eliminating the need fr flppy diskettes t share and stre data. Additinally, PC hard discs can be backed up t the HP 3000, significantly reducing the risk f lst PC data. Als, by cnnecting the Business System 3000 t the existing HP 3000, all users n the netwrk will have access t applicatins n the HP 3000 such as HPDeskManager. Business System Plus sftware is a key cmpnent f the Business System In the sample cnfiguratin, Business System Plus includes: 1) Sftware t allw PC users access t the MICRO 3000GX peripherals; 2) Utilities that aid in the cnfiguratin and maintenance f the netwrk, and; 3) Five key PC applicatins fr each PC n the netwrk. The five applicatins are Advancelink, Executive Card Manager., Executive Memmaker, Graphics Gallery, and Ltus(R) l-2-3(r). As an ptin, electrnic mail (HPDeskManager) and sftware that allws a PC access t Image databases and the ability t dwnlad data t the PC (Infrmatin Access) can be added t Business System Plus. These tw cmpnents are nt included in the pricing f the sample cnfiguratin. The fllwing is a descriptin f the advantages and disadvantages f this ptin versus the ther ptins being presented. Advantages Ability t print/plt t mre than ne printer/pltter at the same time - the HP 3000 uses a multi-tasking perating system (MPE) which can manage several devices at a time. Excellent spler manipulatin capabilities via the MPE spler (SPOOK), - capabilities include the ability t suspend printing, re-start printing withut lss f data, alter print pririties and the number f cpies t be printed. This is due t the extra verhead assciated with running the netwrk ver MPE. If HP 3000 has a system failure the netwrk will g dwn. 9 OPTION "2: PC'S AS SEB.VERS (Vectra Servers with Officeshare Netwrking Sftware) Hewlett Packard's lcal area netwrk ffering is actually a family f prducts called Officeshare. The family cnsists f three prducts: HP StarLAN, which is based n twisted pair cabling; HP THinLAN, which is based n c-axial cabling, and; HP SERIAL, which is based n RS 232 cnnectin and is used fr cnnecting remte PCs t the HP 3000 server. (HP SERIAL is nt available n a PC server.) In general, HP recmmends HP StarLAN be used fr the ffice envirnment because existing phne wire can ften be utilized. With an HP Vectra PC server, StarLAN supprts disc and file sharing, printer sharing with spling, and pltter sharing with spling. In rder t implement tw departments using PC Servers, HP wuld recmmend that each department use its wn lcal server. These servers wuld then be netwrked t each ther, allwing users t share data and printers n bth servers. In additin, bth servers wuld be netwrked t the existing HP 3000 which wuld give users access t applicatins n the HP 3000 such as HPDeskManager. Advantages Best verall perfrmance, particularly fr transactin based PC netwrk sftware such as database applicatins. Offlads the existing HP Relatively lw cst. Disadvantages Desn't handle simultaneus printing and/r pltting due t MS-DOS being a single threaded perating system. Only 1 printer/pltter per server can be active at a time. This means if the pltter is active, nthing can be printed until it has finished. Cnversely, if the printer is printing a large dcument, n ther printing r pltting can take place. Lw security. Data n the netwrk culd be accessed. Having security vilatins culd be minimized by placing the server in a secured lcatin. Smene must be trained and assigned t d rutine netwrk maintenance such as backups n each server. Remte PCs cannt access the netwrk

17 OPTION #4: NON-LAN SOLUTION (PCs with HPDeskManager and AdvancePrint) HPDeskManager, Advanc and AdvancePrint can be used t prvide file sharing and printer/pltter sharing fr PC users. File sharing can be accmplished by using Advanc with HPDeskManager t distribute files t ther users. Althugh this methd is nt as transparent as "true" file sharing, it can be used t accmplish the same task. Printer/pltter sharing can be acc~up ished by using AdvancePrint. Advanc is a PC applicatin that prvides electrnic mail between the PC and HPDeskManager. Advanc users can exchange messages and files, including any MS-DOS file, with any HPDeskManager r Advanc users. A user wishing t share a wrd prcessing dcument, spreadsheet r any PC file culd accmplish this by sending the file using Advanc , which in turn wuld use HPDeskManager t transprt the file t the user's HPDeskManager In-Tray. AdvancePrint is an applicatin that allws PC users t share printers and pltters which are attached t the HP These printers and pltters can be used fr bth PC applicatins as well as HP3000 applicatins. This eliminates the need t have separate printers/pltters, ne fr PC applicatins and ne fr HP 3000 applicatins. The same printer can be used fr bth PC applicatins and HP 3000 applicatins such as HPDesk. Disadvantages N centralized strage f PC data.
