4 Preface This dcument describes the test effrts fr Micrsft Lync 2013 and Citrix XenDesktp 7 virtual desktps fr DVS Enterprise. The dcument prvides infrmatin n the test bjectives, test infrastructure setup used fr the testing, test methdlgy, and the test results. 1 Intrductin The purpse f this test activity is t determine the perfrmance impact f running Micrsft Lync 2013 with XenDesktp 7 virtual desktps n DVS Enterprise. The gal is t understand the impact f Micrsft Lync pint-t-pint cnnectivity between Lync 2013 cnnectins using Citrix HDX technlgies and determine the impact n perfrmance f the VDI cmpute hst, and ultimately n the sessin density numbers. This test effrt uses ne DVS Enterprise cmpute hst and tw XenDesktp 7 virtual desktps with Windws 8 guest perating system and Micrsft Lync 2013 clients installed n them. T test the cnnectivity using Citrix HDX technlgies, tw Windws clients are used as the end-pint devices t run virtual desktp sessins. Micrsft Lync 2013 VDI Plug-in is installed n the Windws clients fr ptimized perfrmance. The Lync 2013 VDI Plugin is an ptimizatin cmpnent built by Micrsft fr Lync 2013 in VDI. It installs n a Windws client end-pint and prvides pairing capabilities with Citrix Receiver fr Windws in rder t ptimize the resurce utilizatin and user experience. The Lync 2013 VDI plug-in prvides pint t pint cnnectivity fr functins such as desktp sharing, audi and vide calls. With this functinality, it fflads the cnnectin thrugh the VDI cmpute hst thus reducing CPU, memry, IOPS, and netwrk cnsumptin frm the VDI cmpute hst. This test effrt attempts t understand the impact f fur different use cases with Micrsft Lync 2013 n the cmpute hst resurce utilizatin. The fur use cases are: a. Messaging (chat) b. Audi call c. Vide call d. Desktp Sharing At the end, an attempt has been made t understand the impact f the incremental resurce utilizatin at the cmpute hst level due t Micrsft Lync 2013 and hw that impacts the virtual desktp sessin density numbers fr DVS Enterprise. 1

5 2 Test Envirnment 2The test infrastructure will include: VMware vsphere 5.1 U1 Hypervisr Citrix XenDesktp 7 virtual desktps with Windws 8 Enterprise guest system 1 x Dell R720 rack servers (Cmpute Hst t supprt tw desktp sessins fr Lync 2013 test) 1 x Dell R710 rack servers (Management Hst) 1 x Dell R710 rack servers (Lync Server 2013 and Infrastructure Services) Dell PwerCnnect 6248 switch 1x Windws client end-pint with Windws 8 Enterprise 1x Windws client end-pint with Windws 7 SP1 Micrsft Lync 2013 VDI Plug-in Overview f the cre infrastructure cmpnents: The Citrix XenDesktp Cnnectin server will be a virtual server hsted n a single management server (VMware ESXi). VMware vcenter Server will be used fr managing the Management and Cmpute hsts. The Master virtual machine will be stred n lcal strage f Cmpute hst. Desktps will be created using Citrix Machine Creatin Services (MCS). Virtual desktps will be stred n lcal strage n Cmpute hst. Micrsft Lync 2013 VDI Plug-in will be installed n the Windws client end-pints. The cre infrastructure cmpnents are listed belw. 8 3 Test Infrastructure Setup 3.1 RAID Cnfiguratin Fr Management Hst 8 x 146 GB 15k SAS drives will be cnfigured n RAID 10 fr OS deplyment as well as management VMs strage. Fr Cmpute Hst 10 x 146 GB SAS drives will be cnfigured n RAID 10 fr cmpute resurces (VDI Desktps). VMware ESXi 5.1 will be installed n internal SD card. 3.2 VMware vsphere Netwrking All VMware vsphere management cmpnents will be hsted n a single R720 server fr the purpses f testing utlined in this dcument. All virtual desktps will be hsted n a single R720 Server. Since testing will be limited t single server perfrmance validatin, there will be 2 servers required and netwrked as the Management and Cmpute Hsts Netwrk Architecture The netwrk cnnectivity between the Management and Cmpute hst servers will be managed by a PC 6248 switch. Bth f these servers will cmmunicate via the VDI Netwrk VLAN Netwrk Characteristics Type f Netwrk VDI netwrk Management netwrk Descriptin This will represent the VDI netwrk traffic fr VDI virtual desktp t infrastructure cmmunicatin. The virtual desktps cntact the Active Directry server and DHCP server als using the same netwrk. Represents the netwrk traffic due t the cmmunicatin between different infrastructure cmpnents such as the Citrix XenDesktp Cnnectin server, Active directry, Micrsft SQL server, and VMware vcenter. The management netwrk f all servers is cnfigured n this netwrk. 5

9 3.2.3 vswitch and VLAN Cnfiguratin The infrastructure netwrk is divided int tw VLANs t segment netwrk traffic int different classes. The tw VLANs t be used in the test cnfiguratin are: - VDI VLAN - Management VLAN VDI Netwrk The servers listed belw are part f the VDI netwrk: The PwerEdge R720 hsting the virtual desktps The PwerEdge R710 hsting the VMware vsphere management virtual servers The Test Mgmt server used fr hsting the Active Directry server 6

10 4 Test Methdlgy 4.1 Test Objectives The primary bjective f the testing are: Determine the CPU, Memry, Disk IOPS, and Netwrk impact n the Citrix XenDesktp Cmpute hst fr using the Lync 2013 clients fr chat, audi, vide, and desktp sharing sessins n each virtual desktp. The testing fcuses n the all CPU, memry, Disk IOPs, and netwrking aspects f VDI cmpute hsts and detailed statistics and metrics are captured. 4.2 Test Apprach 2 Enhanced wrklad sized VMs t test sessins t each ther via manual Lync initializatin. One Windws 8 client end-pint running Micrsft Lync 2013 VDI Plug-in and ne Windws 7 SP1 client end-pint running Micrsft Lync 2013 VDI Plug-in will be used fr creating the tw VDI sessins. Measure abve mentined cmpute items during messaging (chat), vice, vide and desktp sharing. Measure per VM verhead assciated with running Lync 2013 clients in VDI sessins. Prvide guidance n a per VDI hst scaling measurement. 4.3 Lad Generatin Tw desktps in the XenDesktp 7 infrastructure will manually cnnect t each ther and test a regular IM sessin, desktp sharing, and audi and vide call. In each f these fur types f Lync activities, all data described abve (4 areas) will be captured with the Micrsft Lync 2013 VDI Plug-in Mnitring Tls The system resurce utilizatin and perfrmance metrics at the VMware ESXi hypervisr layer will be mnitred using VMware vcenter. The Windws client end-pints will be mnitred thrugh Perf Mn metric captures t ensure that they themselves are nt a bttleneck. 4.4 Test Criteria What is the per VM sessin density change with Lync 2013 n XenDesktp 7? Strage Capacity and I/O Latency All virtual desktps will be stred n lcal Tier 1 strage n the Cmpute Hst. The strage disk I/O latency will be measured t nt exceed 20 ms, which is industry standard fr gd perfrmance. Maintaining this limit will ensure gd user applicatin respnse times when there are n ther bttlenecks at the infrastructure layer System Resurce Utilizatin n the Hypervisr Hst Infrastructure The primary fcus f ur testing is t test the impact f Lync 2013 client with plugin fr VDI n Cmpute hst lcal Tier 1 IOPs. Using the fllwing metrics at the hypervisr infrastructure layer will ensure slutin cnsistency: Average CPU utilizatin n the cmpute hst t remain belw 85%, with ccasinal peaks up t 90%. Ttal netwrk bandwidth utilizatin nt t exceed 85%. 7

11 5 Lync 2013 VDI Plug-in Testing/Characterizatin results In rder t test ut the functinality and prvide VDI cmpute server verhead we manually initiated tw VDI sessins that were enabled with Lync 2013 n each desktp. The sessins used independent Windws clients that were enabled with USB headsets and integrated vide devices. The tests were run with the Lync 2013 VDI Plug-in installed n the Windws clients. The data n the VDI cmpute hst shuld be interpreted as a divisible f 2 since there were tw sessins running cncurrently. The per VM resurce utilizatin is cnverted t per VM incremental resurce utilizatin due t Lync by subtracting the resurces used by applicatins ther than Lync. This methd als allws the bserved incremental resurce utilizatin due t Lync t be VM prfile agnstic. 5.1 Messaging (chat) Perfrmance Lync usage simulatin: This test simulates a chat (text based messaging) sessin between tw users, each using ne virtual desktp n a Windws client device. Bth f the users simulate typing and sending messages. Lync incremental resurce utilizatin: CPU utilizatin, active memry usage, netwrk bandwidth utilizatin, and disk I/O data pints were cllected fr the cmpute hst the VMware ESXi hst server running the virtual desktps. The data fr the cmpute hst shuld be interpreted as a divisible f 2 since there were tw sessins running cncurrently. This data will prvide the resurce utilizatin fr ne VM running Micrsft Lync and perfrming messaging activity. In additin, CPU utilizatin, active memry usage, netwrk bandwidth utilizatin, and disk I/O data pints were separately cllected fr the cmpute hst running the same tw VMs but this time withut running Lync r any ther applicatin. This data fr the cmpute hst shuld als be interpreted as a divisible f 2 since there were tw sessins running cncurrently. This data will prvide the resurce utilizatin fr ne VM in idle state. The peak incremental resurce utilizatin due t Micrsft Lync was calculated by subtracting the average resurce utilizatin when the VM is in idle cnditin frm the peak resurce utilizatin when the VM was running Lync messaging. The per VM average resurce utilizatin in idle state is: Hypervisr Hst Resurce Utilizatin CPU Utilizatin 0.1% Memry (Active) Utilizatin 0.3 GB Disk IOPS (Read & Write) 1 IOPS Netwrk Utilizatin 0.2 Mbps Each f the fllwing plts prvides the resurce utilizatin fr tw VMs running Micrsft Lync and perfrming messaging (chat). 8

On the ther side, at the secnd Windws client with a sessin t the ther virtual desktp, a paragraph was read repetitively t the headphne attached t it. Lync incremental resurce utilizatin: CPU utilizatin, active memry usage, netwrk bandwidth utilizatin, and disk I/O data pints were cllected fr the cmpute hst the VMware ESXi hst server running the virtual desktps. The data fr the cmpute hst shuld be interpreted as a divisible f 2 since there were tw sessins running cncurrently. This data will prvide the resurce utilizatin fr ne VM running Micrsft Lync and perfrming an audi call. Fr the vide simulatin, the webcams n bth f the Windws clients, which were running sessins t the virtual desktps, were used. Alng with that, fr audi simulatin, a recrded speech was played near the headphne attached t ne f the first Windws clients with a sessin t ne f the virtual desktps.
