SIMPROCESS Mdel Windw Menus File Menu New creates a new mdel file. Open pens a previusly saved mdel. If the mdel directry des nt exist (see Save As belw), it is created during the Open prcess. Open Recent cntains a list f recently pened mdels. The first item is Clear Menu, which remves all recently pened mdels frm the Open Recent menu. Open Directry lists the SIMPROCESS file directries (Installatin, Wrking, Mdels, Metamdel, OrgMdel, and SPUser). Selecting a directry pens the system file explrer t that directry. Open File pens nn-simprocess files. When selected SIMPROCESS displays the system s file chser dialg. SIMPROCESS attempts t pen the selected file with the applicatin assigned t the file. Clse clses the mdel windw. Mdel Prperties pens a dialg that tracks the edit histry f a mdel. Grup ID cntrls the Grup ID f a mdel. When a mdel is saved SIMPROCESS assigns it an internal mdel ID. Each time a Prcess r Activity is added frm a template in a Library the mdel ID is checked against ne stred with the template t determine whether the template Page 14

was riginally created frm that same mdel. If it was, the creatin f Attributes, Resurces, Entity Types, and ther items is suppressed based n the presumptin that they will already be present in the mdel. Each time a cpy f a mdel is saved using the Save As cmmand, the internal mdel ID is changed. Saving a cpy f the mdel t anther name t give t team members invlved in cllabrative mdel develpment is therefre nt ideal. Any templates they might create frm the cpy wuld nt share the mdel ID f the riginal. This results in duplicatin f Attributes, Resurces, Entity Types, and ther items in the master mdel when the team member's effrts are merged back int it via Library templates. The Grup ID identifies mdels created with Save As as belnging t the master mdel (using Assign Grup ID n an pen mdel causes that mdel t becme a master mdel). Save As des nt change the Grup ID. Thus, if the master mdel has a Grup ID assigned, every cpy f the master mdel made via Save As will carry the same Grup ID. When a template is placed int a Library frm any Prcess r Activity the Grup ID will be stred in the template alng with the mdel ID. When a template is added t a mdel the Grup ID is checked befre the mdel ID t avid duplicatin f Attributes and ther items. Only if n Grup ID is present in the mdel r if the Grup ID f the mdel and the Grup ID f the template d nt match will the mdel ID check be perfrmed. Assign Grup ID enabled if n Grup ID is assigned t the mdel; if ne is assigned, Clear Grup ID will be enabled. N dialg is displayed by either actin. If used, the Grup ID is created internally by SIMPROCESS. Assigning a Grup ID facilitates cllabrative wrk n a mdel using a master mdel and templates placed int a Library. See Chapter 4: Templates and Libraries in Part C f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual fr mre infrmatin n templates and Libraries. Clear Grup ID remves an assigned Grup ID. Save saves the mdel. Saving a mdel that has nt previusly been saved will execute Save As s the mdel can be named. NOTE: It is a gd idea t save a mdel any time yu make changes t it and t save a mdel under a different name any time yu extensively change a mdel. SIMPROCESS saves yur mdels with the extensin.spm and at the same time als saves a backup with the extensin.bck. T save a new mdel r t save an existing mdel under a new name, use File/Save As. Fr infrmatin n autmatic saving, see Chapter 4: Preferences. Save As used t save a mdel fr the first time r t save a mdel with a new name. Save As creates a directry fr the mdel (referred t as the mdel directry) that has the mdel name withut extensin and is in the same directry as the mdel file. The mdel directry is the default lcatin fr input and utput files f varius types and is the preferred lcatin fr imprted images (see Imprting Graphics in Chapter 4 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual) and external Java classes (see SIMPROCESS and External Java Classes in Chapter 3 f Part D f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual). When perfrming Save As the cmplete cntents f the previus mdel directry are cpied t the new mdel directry. Imprt Page 15

Versin Mdel imprts a SIMPROCESS versin r mdel. Due t changes in the graphical crdinate system frm earlier versins f SIMPROCESS t the current versin, sme cleanup will be required. XPDL Mdel imprts an XPDL mdel. (See fr infrmatin n XPDL.) The XPDL mdel will be validated against the XPDL 2.2 schema. A cpy f this schema can be fund at Validatin errrs may ccur if the XPDL mdel is based n XPDL 2.0 r earlier. If SIMPROCESS indicates there are validatin errrs simply cntinue with the imprt. Mst likely the validatin errrs are due t a difference in XPDL versins instead f malfrmed XPDL. If the XPDL mdel being imprted was previusly exprted frm SIMPROCESS 4.3 r higher, the mdel may cntain sme SIMPROCESS unique infrmatin that will help appearance. If the XPDL mdel was previusly exprted frm SIMPROCESS 5.1 r higher, the mdel will cntain SIMPROCESS unique simulatin infrmatin. During imprt, if SIMPROCESS detects unique infrmatin frm ther applicatins, this infrmatin will be transferred t the new SIMPROCESS mdel. Thus, if the SIMPROCESS mdel is later exprted t XPDL, that applicatin unique infrmatin will be exprted as well. See XPDL Imprt in Chapter 6 f Part C f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual fr mre infrmatin. MS Prject File imprts a Micrsft Prject file (*.mpp). The resulting mdel shuld be cnsidered a starting pint fr mdeling the prject detailed in Micrsft Prject. The metamdel MSPrject.mdm is assciated with SIMPROCESS mdels created frm an.mpp file. (See the SIMPROCESS Metadata Manual fr infrmatin n metamdels and metadata.) Open the MSPrject metamdel in the Metamdel Editr t see the data items assciated with a MS Prject imprt. There are data items fr the Prject, fr each Task, each Relatin, and each Resurce. There are descriptins f each data item in the metamdel. Als, Activities and Cnnectrs can have specialized naming and clring based n the lag defined n task relatins. If there is n lag there is n special naming r clring. If exprting back t MS Prject is planned, these names shuld nt be changed. The names include the relatin type (FS, FF, SF, SS) and the percentage r lag duratin (fr example FS-50%). Finish-Finish items are blue, Finish-Start items are green, Start-Finish items are cyan, and Start-Start items are magenta. Exprt Graphics Image File creates a JPEG image f the current layut. Activities Activity List utputs the Prcess and Activity hierarchy t an ASCII file. Activity By Type utputs Prcesses and Activities t a cmma separated file (.csv) r spreadsheet file (.xls). Cmma Separated Value (.csv) is the default file type. See Exprting Activities in Chapter 2 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual fr a descriptin. UML Activity Mdel utputs the mdel t a UML-cmpatible file. This feature is disabled in the SIMPROCESS Runtime versin. Page 16

XPDL Mdel utputs the mdel t an XPDL 2.2 cmpatible file that fllws the schema at (See fr infrmatin n XPDL.) Exprted XPDL mdels will cntain sme SIMPROCESS unique infrmatin. This infrmatin is nly useful t SIMPROCESS and shuld be ignred by ther applicatins imprting the mdel. See XPDL Exprt in Chapter 6 f Part C f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual t see hw SIMPROCESS mdel cnstructs are exprted t XPDL. BPEL Prcess creates an XML file that cntains a Business Prcess Executin Language (BPEL) prcess cnstructed frm SIMPROCESS metadata. See the SIMPROCESS Metadata Manual fr mre infrmatin. Ultimus creates an XML file cmpatible with the Ultimus XML Cnverter. The XML file is created in the mdel s directry, and the name f the file cnsists f the name f the mdel fllwed by _Ultimus.xml. The Ultimus XML Cnverter uses that XML file t create an Ultimus file (.wfl) fr use in Ultimus BPM Studi. See fr mre infrmatin n Ultimus. Wrkpint creates an XML file that can be used t create a WrkPint archive file. The WrkPint archive file can be imprted int WrkPint t prduce a WrkPint prcess. The XML file is created in the mdel s directry, and the name f the file cnsists f the name f the mdel fllwed by _WrkPint.xml. A WrkPint prcess created frm a SIMPROCESS mdel cntains minimal infrmatin and is merely intended t prvide a starting pint frm which t begin implementing an actual WrkPint wrk flw. Publish Mdel t HTML utputs the mdel t HTML frmat that can be viewed via a standard web brwser. Select a destinatin directry and a new directry will be created with the same name as the mdel (with any spaces replaced by underscres). All layuts will be exprted t PNG image files with web pages built arund them. Lists f the mdel's Activities, Prcesses, Resurces, Entity Types, and each type f Glbal Attribute will be prvided, including links t the prperties f each. If the mdel has been executed the Standard Reprt data will be included alng with any plts that are available via the Display Real-Time Plts menu item. Slideshw creates a slideshw file f the mdel layuts in the mdel directry. The layuts can be scaled t fit n a slide r a maximum size can be specified. If a maximum size is specified layuts are divided int separate slides based n the requested size. PDF creates a.pdf file f the mdel layuts in the mdel directry. RTF creates a.rtf file f the mdel layuts in the mdel directry. MS Prject File creates a.mpx (Micrsft Prject Exchange) file in the mdel directry. Micrsft Prject ptins may need t be changed t allw Prject t pen this file frmat. See Tls/Optins in MS Prject. Select the Security tab and click Allw lading files with legacy r nn-default file frmats. Activity delays in a SIMPROCESS mdel translate t task duratins in MS Prject. Since mst Activity delays are sme frm f distributin and nt cnstants, a better exprt can be btained by selecting Page 17

Print Cllect Activity Statistics either glbally (see Glbal Statistics) r n key Activities and then running the mdel fr multiple replicatins befre exprting. If this is dne, during exprt, Activities that d nt have a cnstant fr Duratin, will use the average cycle time acrss replicatins (see Entity Type Statistics) fr the task time in MS Prject. MS Prject des nt supprt task times f less than a minute s Activity duratins f less than a minute will be zer in the exprted MS Prject file. Activities that have n delay duratin are nt exprted. Print Layut prints a picture f the current mdel layut including backgrund icns. Print Mdel prints a picture f each layut f the mdel. Befre printing there is an ptin t include a table f cntents. If selected the number f pages cntaining the table f cntents will be displayed. Prcess Dcumentatin prints the descriptins f selected Prcesses. Mdel Dcumentatin prints the descriptin f all elements f the mdel. This includes Name, Path, and Cmment field entries f all Activities/Prcesses, Cnnectrs, Entity Types, and Resurces in the mdel. Any infrmatin yu have added using the Dcument buttn is als included. Exit quits SIMPROCESS. If yu have made edits since yu last saved the pen mdels yu will be prmpted t save yur mdels befre exiting. Page 18

Edit Menu Und restres Activities, Prcesses, and Cnnectrs that have been cut r cleared (deleted). It als reverses Align and Distribute actins, remves Activities, Prcesses, and Cnnectrs that have been added, and reverses any mve Cnnectr actins. Und is nly active at the hierarchical level where the actin ccurred. A maximum f 30 und actins can be active at any ne time. As editing events ccur that create und actins, the mst recent 30 actins are the nes that are kept. The Und menu and the tl tip fr the Und buttn will update t shw the next und actin (fr example Und Clear, Und Cut, Und Align, r Und Distribute). Und actins are active in the reverse rder f the editing actins that created them. Fr instance, if Activities are aligned, then an Activity is deleted, the rder f und actins wuld be Und Clear fllwed by Und Align. Cut cuts the selected bject frm the mdel layut. The cut bject is cpied t the clipbard, and the bject may be pasted nt a different part f the layut r int anther pen mdel using Paste. Cnnectrs and Pads cannt be cut. They can nly be cleared. Cpy places a cpy f the selected bject in the clipbard. It will remain there until replaced by anther bject that is cut r cpied. Once a cpy is made it can be pasted n the layut r int anther mdel by using the Paste cmmand. Page 19

Paste makes a cpy f the bject in the clipbard and pastes it nt the layut. Multiple cpies f an bject can be pasted withut additinal cpies being made. Pasting items int a mdel different frm the mdel where the cpy r cut ccurred can cause lss f mdel cmpnent references. See Advantage f Templates Over Cpy/Paste in Chapter 4 f Part C f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual fr mre infrmatin. Duplicate a shrtcut that cpies a selected bject frm the layut and then des a paste t a psitin selected n the layut. This cmbines Cpy and Paste int ne cmmand. This is useful when yu want t quickly cpy smething n the layut and paste it smewhere else. Clear deletes a selected bject withut cpying it t the clipbard. Select All selects all Activities, Prcesses, and Backgrund Text items n the mdel layut. Resize resizes a layut bject. Yu can resize the hrizntal and vertical directins separately if yu wish t resize the icn in a nn-prprtinal way. The values represent pixels. The Default Size buttn sets the Icn Width and Icn Height t the default size f the icn. Chse the Shw Handles buttn if yu wuld like t drag t resize the bject. Multiple bjects can be resized at the same time by having multiple items selected when chsing Resize. Imprtant Nte: An bject cannt be resized smaller than 10 x 10 pixels. Thus, if numbers are entered that are smaller, the bject will be resized t 10 x 10. Als, Backgrund Text bjects cannt be resized using Resize. The fnt prperties must be changed t resize Backgrund Text. Switch Activity T changes an Activity frm ne type t anther. This menu item is nly displayed when ne and nly ne Activity is selected n the layut. Prcesses d nt activate this menu item. 55 Chapter 3: SIMPROCESS Definitins SIMPROCESS Mdel Cmpnents These cmpnents are used t build a SIMPROCESS mdel. Entities Entities represent peple, gds, r infrmatin. Entity instances are generally created at a Generate Activity frm Entity Types, althugh ther Activities (Batch, Assemble, Split, Transfrm, and Gate) can prduce Entity instances as well. Entity instances must enter a Dispse Activity t ensure statistics cllectin fr the Entity Type. Entity Types An Entity Type is the type frm which Entity instances are created. Statistics can be cllected n Entity Types. Entity Types are defined by selecting Define/Entity Types r by clicking the Define Entity Types buttn n the Mdel tlbar. See Entity Types in Chapter 3 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Entity Instances Entity Instances are created frm an Entity Type. Fr example, cnsider an Entity Type named Car. A Generate Activity culd create multiple instances f the Entity Type Car (Car-1, Car-2, Car-N). Entity instances flw thrugh the mdel. Resurces Resurces are the agents required t perfrm an Activity. Peple, cmputers, and trucks are all examples f Resurces. Resurces may be cnsumable (such as fuel r paper) r reusable (such as trucks r peple). Bth variable and fixed csts can be assigned t Resurces. A Resurce is always available unless a Resurce Dwntime r Resurce Shift is applied t the Resurce. Resurces are defined by selecting Define/Resurces r by clicking the Define Resurces buttn n the Mdel tlbar. See Resurces in Chapter 3 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Resurce Dwntime Resurces are assumed t always be available; hwever, lcal r glbal dwntime can be specified t mdel Resurce unavailability. Lcal Resurce Dwntime (applies t a specific Resurce) is defined in the Resurce prperties, and glbal Resurce Dwntime (can apply t multiple Resurces) is defined by selecting Define/Resurce Dwntime r by clicking the Define Resurce Dwntime buttn n the Mdel tlbar. See Glbal Resurce Dwntime in Chapter 3 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Resurce Shifts Resurce shifts can be defined that can apply t multiple Resurces. These shifts mdel the availability f Resurces; thus, verriding the default f the Resurce being always available. Resurce shifts are defined by selecting Define/Resurce Shifts r by clicking the Define Resurce Shifts buttn n the Mdel tlbar. See Resurce Shifts in Chapter 3 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Page 53

Chapter 3: SIMPROCESS Definitins Activities An Activity is a basic step in a mdel where an peratin is perfrmed n an Entity instance. Examples f Activities are Generate, Delay, and Dispse. An Activity may r may nt invlve passage f time r require Resurces. Activities are created frm the Mdel tlbar r frm the Create menu. See Prcesses and Activities in Chapter 2 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Prcesses The Prcess prvides hierarchical mdeling capabilities. A Prcess is a cllectin f Activities and sub- Prcesses rganized as a mdel netwrk. Each Prcess can have multiple Alternatives. A Prcess is created frm the Mdel tlbar r frm the Create menu. See Prcesses and Activities in Chapter 2 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Prcess Alternative Prcess Alternatives are alternate behavirs r flws f a Prcess. Multiple Alternatives can be assciated with a Prcess but nly ne can be active during a simulatin. See Alternative Sub-Prcesses in Chapter 2 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Pads Pads are small triangular graphic bjects lcated alng the brders f an Activity r Prcess. Pads are used fr attaching Cnnectrs t the inputs and utputs f the Activity/Prcess. Entity instances enter and exit Activities thrugh input and utput pads. Pads can nly be added t Prcesses. New Pads are created frm the Mdel tlbar. See Pads in Chapter 2 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Cnnectrs Cnnectrs link Activities and Prcesses tgether and are the paths used by Entity instances t flw thrugh the mdel. Cnnectrs can have delay times. Cnnectrs are created frm the Mdel tlbar by selecting the Bent Cnnectr r Straight Cnnectr tl. See Cnnectrs in Chapter 2 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Attributes Attributes are System r user-defined variables fr Entity Instances, Entity Types, Resurces, Activities/Prcesses, and the Mdel. Attributes have multiple uses such as determining the path f an Entity instance, cllecting specialized statistics, and hlding varius types f data structures. They are typically used in Expressins. See Chapter 1: Attributes in Part D f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Expressins Expressins are activatin pints in Entity Instances, Entity Types, Resurces, Activities/Prcesses, and the Mdel that can include lgic fr special prcessing. SIMPROCESS includes the SIMPROCESS Expressin Language fr creating Expressins. See Chapter 2: Expressins in Part D f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Page 54

Chapter 3: SIMPROCESS Definitins Layuts The Layuts cntain the graphical representatins f the Activities, Prcesses, and Cnnectrs that make up a SIMPROCESS mdel. Each level f a mdel, which cnsists f the tp level and every Prcess Alternative, has its wn Layut which can be sized independently f every ther Layut. The Entity Instances nly appear n the Layut while the simulatin is running. The Layut can be made t resemble the physical layut f a system r it can be clser in appearance t a flw diagram. See Chapter 1: Mdel Layuts in Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Mdel The Mdel is the cmbinatin f Entity Types, Resurces, Activities, Prcesses, and Cnnectrs that represents the system being studied. It is nt intended t be an exact duplicate f the system but rather a simplified versin that captures the relevant features. Page 55

Maximum Number f Edit Lg Entries sets the limit f entries in the mdel s edit lg. The default is unlimited (0 entry). Help gives infrmatin abut the SIMPROCESS preferences. Page 68

Chapter 4: Preferences Mdel Specific Preferences When the preferences are pened frm a mdel windw there are additinal preferences that apply nly t the active mdel. There is an additinal tab (Tlbars) and tw mre preferences at the bttm. Als, changes in the preferences can be applied t the active mdel. Tlbars System turns n/ff the System tlbar. Mdel turns n/ff the Mdel tlbar. Prcess Navigatin displays a bar f buttns that facilitate navigating up a mdel hierarchy. When descending int a Prcess the name f the prcess is added t the bar. Selecting a buttn n the bar sets the mdel layut t that Prcess. This prvides the ability t g t a specific higher level withut navigating up ne level at a time. The bar displays just belw the System tlbar. This feature is mst useful when a mdel has mre than tw r three levels f hierarchy. The example belw shws the CnfgMgmt.spm demnstratin mdel. Page 69

Chapter 4: Preferences Clr displays a bar with a buttn fr each clr fund in the mdel. These buttns can be used t apply clrs t items in the mdel. Every time a new clr is used in the mdel a new buttn with that clr is added t the Clr bar. Other Preferences Display Activity Prperties Viewer tggles the display f the Activity Prperties Viewer dialg. This dialg can be resized and remains visible until deselected here r Page 70

Chapter 4: Preferences the dialg is clsed. Clsing the dialg will turn ff this setting. Selecting any Activity r Prcess n the layut will display certain Activity and Prcess prperties. When an Activity is selected, the Activity delay that is in its Duratin field displays in the Duratin Infrmatin field, and the Resurce usage infrmatin displays in the Resurce Usage field. When an Activity r a Prcess is selected, the text in its Cmment field displays in the Cmment Field sectin, and the text f the Dcumentatin displays in the Dcumentatin Text sectin. The File/URL field will display the cntents f that same field frm the Dcumentatin tab f the prperties fr the selected Activity r Prcess. If enabled, the View buttn will attempt t launch yur preferred web brwser fr a URL r suitable applicatin fr the file if it cntains any path infrmatin. By prviding easy access t key Activity r Prcess prperties, this feature is ideal fr use in mdel review and validatin. See Cmmn Activity Prperties in Chapter 2 f Part A f the SIMPROCESS User s Manual. Display Activity Prperties Editr when selected a panel will display t the right when a single Activity n the layut is selected with the muse. This panel allws direct access t sme prperties and access t ther prperties thrugh an Edit buttn. Changes made t prperties that are directly accessible cannt be canceled. The changes are immediate. Changes made thrugh a dialg displayed with the Edit buttn can be discarded since the edit dialgs can be canceled. The panel will cver much f the layut s the mdel windw may need t be expanded t allw mre wrking area. Page 71

Chapter 4: Preferences The panel disappears when anything n the layut ther than an Activity is selected. Als, the panel will disappear when an Activity is selected n the Mdel tlbar r Create menu. This preference can be changed n the cntextual menu that displays due t a right click n the layut. Belw is an example shwing the prperties f a Generate Activity. Page 72

Chapter 4: Preferences Applying Preferences Preferences are applied when the prperties are clsed by clicking OK. At this pint any new item added t the mdel t which preferences apply will reflect the Preferences settings. If the Preferences are never mdified, the defaults assumed by SIMPROCESS will apply. Updated preferences can be applied t already existing items in a mdel by selecting the Apply ptins n each tab. In the fllwing example Apply Size and Apply Clr were selected n the Text Label tab. Thus, when OK is clicked the new Size and Clr will be applied t every Prcess Alternative that has a Text Label. Hwever, befre the selected actins are applied t the active mdel, cnfirmatin is required that these actins ccur. Page 73
