1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 STARTING LECTORA The first time you start Lectora you will be asked what type of file you would like to create. Lectora is a widely used e-learning development tool that is used to create and maintain computer based training programs. Lectora will create a student controlled learning environment that is self paced, has built in testing and will automatically post test results via or script. The file can contain a multiplicity of media including text, images, video, audio, interactive forms, animation and documents. The information can be presented with a variety of PowerPoint-like transitions and animation. This manual is designed as an introduction to Lectora. It is meant to be used in a classroom environment, but can be used as a short reference manual. The manual covers the components of the Lectora interface, How to create and edit the variety of objects created for a Lectora Title and how to save a Title for distribution. 1.2 INTERFACE Toolbars Title Left Pane with Objects P a g e 4

1.3 Modes: Before a Title is published it can be run in one of three modes : Edit, Run and Preview. Edit is, as the name implies, the means to create and manipulate all Lectora objects. Run puts the Title into a live state for testing purposes. Preview also puts the title into a live state but also approximates the actual preview of what the title will look like Objects A key to understanding Lectora is the concept of objects. An Object is a standard computerese term that describes the most basic component manipulated by an application. This is best described with real world examples and then translating them to the computer world. In the world a room might contain a chair, a desk and a coffee maker. These might be called objects in the room. Each of these objects has properties that can be changed: A chair can be moved, a desk can be painted another colour, and a coffee pot can be hot or cold. Each of these objects can also contain other objects: a chair has legs and a seat, a desk has drawers and a top, a coffee maker has a pot and a stand. In the computer world, and Lectora in particular, the idea of objects holds true as well. A Title can contain chapters, sections, pages and tests. Pages can contain images, video, Text, etc. Lectora can create these objects and manipulate the properties of these objects Actions Actions are the verbs of Lectora. They cause Lectora titles and objects to behave certain ways. For example: A Next button can be clicked with a mouse change colour and then initiate the action of moving to the next page. P a g e 5

1.3.3 Page components Title Page Button Object Image Object Section Chapter Text Object with Hyperlinks Page Object The left hand pane in Lectora will show all of the available objects in the Lectora title. Each of the objects will have their own properties. Objects with a plus or minus sign contain sub-objects. P a g e 6

1.3.4 Properties Properties are the characteristics of an object. These will generally include simple things like colour, location and size as well as more complex things like behviour on the web, how the object will appear (does a video run automatically), what the object contains, whether the object has a reference (where did it come from). Properties are accessed by double clicking on them in the title or the left pane or else by right clicking on them and selecting Properties from the shortcut menu. P a g e 7

1.3.5 Toolbars Toolbars are a quick means to add new objects to a title, manipulate existing objects or run other Lectora functions. All toolbars are accessible from the View, Toolbars command Command Menu The command menu provides access to most of the program functions found in toolbars and additional functions that are used less frequently.
