1 Assigning OPOS Device Names to a Star Printers and Cash Drawer Introduction This application note shows how to add a Star Printer and a cash drawer attachment as OPOS devices. While these instructions were written using the TSP700II, this document suffices for the below models. Supported Printers: FVP10, TSP650, TSP700II, TSP800II, SP700, SP500, TUP500*, TUP900* Supported Interfaces: Ethernet**, USB, PoweredUSB, Serial, Parallel Supported Environments: Windows 7 (32-bit), Windows Vista (32-bit), Windows XP Star Tools Needed: StarPRNT Intelligence Configuration Utility found on the Installation CD * TUP500 and TUP900 kiosk printers do not support cash drawers ** TUP900 does not support Ethernet connection Table of Contents I. StarPRNT and Printer Installation If the Star Printer has already been installed on the system, skip to section 2, Printer Registration. If the Star Printer has not been installed on the system, it is necessary to install it using the StarPRNT Intelligence Driver at this point in time. For detailed installation instructions, choose the printer s connection interface below: Ethernet (Static IP Address) Ethernet (Dynamic IP Address) USB Serial Parallel Once the printer is installed on the system, return to this application note and skip to section 2, Printer Registration. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 1

2 II. Printer Registration 1. Connect the printer to the PC and turn the power on. StarPRNT should have already been installed at this time. 2. Click the Windows Start button and navigate StarMicronics > Printer Software > Printer Utility. 3. Click OPOS. 4. If no OPOS CO or CCO is in use, check the boxes next to Control Object and Service Object in the POSPrinter section. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 2

3 5. Click Add new. 6. Enter a new OPOS device name. Click OK. 7. Highlight the newly created device name and click Configure. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 3

Set any desired special settings: Character region: If printing Kanji characters, select DBCS PrintBitmap uses stored logos: Select Yes if a logo was stored in the printer s physical memory Printable Area: Select 58mm if using smaller width paper Two Color Printing: Select Enable if desired (Note: Requires two color thermal paper) Communications timeout: Set the timeout period In addition, it is possible to add a Logical Device Name (LDN) here if desired. An LDN allows the OPOS device to be called by an additional name which can make it simpler to identify where the device is located. 9. To set an LDN, click Add new. 10. 5 11. Click OK. 12. Highlight the device name and click Test. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 5

6 13. Click CheckHealth. 14. The printer outputs a test print and OPOS_SUCCESS appears. These actions confirm the printer has been successfully set up as an OPOS device. Click the X in the upper right hand corner. 15. Click OK. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 6

7 16. Click See all registered devices. The new device name appears, along with any other POSPrinter OPOS device names that were previously registered. Congratulations! You have successfully set up your Star Printer as an OPOS device. To set up a Cash Drawer OPOS device, continue to the next section, III Cash Drawer Registration. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 7

8 III. Cash Drawer Registration 1. If no OPOS CO or CCO is in use, check the box next to Control Object and Service Object in the CashDrawer section. 2. Click Add new. 3. Enter a new OPOS device name. Click OK. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 8

9 4. Highlight the newly created device name and click Configure. 5. Set any desired special settings: Cash Drawer Circuit: When using two drawers via a Y cable, set the device as either primary or secondary On pulse width: Set the time for how long the On pulse is fired. If the drawer doesn t reliably open, try a higher setting Off pulse width: Set the time to pause for between On pulses. If the drawer doesn t reliably open, try a higher setting Drawer Status: Select Supported for cash drawers that can send status Status Signal: Configure the status signal according to cash drawer specification Communications timeout: Set the timeout period 08/2012, V1.1 Page 9

10 In addition, it is possible to add a Logical Device Name (LDN) here if desired.
