1 Introduction Application Note Installing a Star Ethernet Printer on Mac OS X via the Browser This application note shows how to install a Star Ethernet printer with a Static IP Address using the browser. To use the browser method, it is necessary for DHCP to be enabled on the network and the printer must receive a temporary IP Address when connected. If DHCP is not enabled, please see Star s FAQ detailing ethernet installation via Terminal. The Mountain Lion update features a change in security settings on Mac OS X. This section covers the steps necessary to adjust permission settings to install the Star Micronics CUPS driver on this operating system. When attempting to install the CUPS driver prior to setting the correct permission, the above error message displays. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 1

2 1. Click the Apple and then System Preferences. 2. Click Security and Privacy. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 2

3 3. Set Allow applications downloaded from: to Anywhere. 4. Click Allow From Anywhere. Mountain Lion is now ready to install the CUPS driver. Continue to Section II: Installing the CUPS Driver. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 3

4 II. Installing the CUPS Driver 1. Ensure the CUPS driver is on the Mac. Most Star printers ship with Installation CDs containing all drivers. If the printer did not ship with a CD or the CD was misplaced, the driver can be downloaded for free from the Star Global Support Site. 2. Open starcupsdrv-#.#.#.pkg. 3. 5 4. Select the location to install and click Continue. 5. Click Install and enter the system username and password if prompted. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 5

7 III. Assigning a Static IP Address via Browser Application Note 1. Determine the printer s IP Address on the network. This can be done by performing a self test. Ensure the printer power is off and that it is connected to the network. Press and hold the feed button while turning the power switch on. Release the feed button after approximately three seconds. The printer outputs the first page of the self test showing hardware settings. About ten seconds later, the next self test prints showing network configuration. The bottom of this second printout shows the IP Address, as displayed in the example above. If the IP Address line reads (Didn t obtain), the printer did not receive an IP Address. Open a browser like Safari or Firefox and type the printer s IP address into the address bar. 3. Click Login in the left menu bar. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 7

8 4. Login. Factory Default User Name: root Factory Default Password: public 5. Click IP Parameters in the left menu bar. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 8

9 6. Enter an IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. 7. Click Submit. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 9

10 8. This page confirms the information set. Click Save in the left menu bar. 9. Click Save Configuration printing Restart device to save settings and print a test page. 10. It will take about ten seconds for the printer to restart with the new configuration settings. At this point, close the browser window. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 10

12 3. Click IP. 4. In the Address: field, type the printer s IP Address. If desired, enter a queue name. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 12

13 5. Click the drop down next to Print Using:. Click Select Printer Software. 6. Type Star into the search field. Select the model being installed from the list and click OK. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 13

14 7. Click Add. 8. The printer queue appears. Close Print & Scan. Congratulations! You have successfully installed your Star Ethernet Printer on Mac OS X. Continue on to Section V to learn how to print a self test and configure settings available in CUPS. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 14

15 V. Printing a Test Page and Configuring CUPS Settings 1. Open a browser like Safari or Firefox and type localhost:631 in the address bar. 2. Mountain Lion users may experience the above error message. If this occurs, copy cupsctl WebInterface=yes. 3. Open Terminal. 4. Paste the command and hit enter. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 15

16 5. Return to the browser and retype localhost:631. The CUPS settings will now be available. 6. Click Printers. 7. Click the blue printer queue name. 09/2012, V1.1 Page 16

17 8. In the Maintenance dropdown, choose Print Test Page. The printer prints a test page from CUPS. 9. In the Administration dropdown, choose Set Default Options. 10. Click on any option in blue to configure printer settings. Congratulations!
