1 Installing a Star USB Printer on Windows 7/Vista/XP Using StarPRNT Introduction This application note shows how to install a Star USB Printer using the StarPRNT Intelligence Driver/Configuration Utility package. While these instructions were written using the TSP700II, this document suffices for the below models. Supported Printers: FVP10, TSP650, TSP700II, TSP800II, SP700, SP500, TUP500, TUP900 Supported Interfaces: USB, PoweredUSB Supported Environments: Windows 7 (32/64-bit), Windows Vista (32/64-bit), Windows XP Star Tools Needed: StarPRNT Intelligence Configuration Utility found on the Installation CD Table of Contents I. Ensure the printer is not connected to the PC at this point in time. 2. Insert the CD into the CDROM drive or click Autorun.exe in the main directory to execute the installer. If the CD was misplaced, the contents can be downloaded from the Star Global Support Site for free. Note: In emergency situations, it is possible to install a Star USB printer without installing StarPRNT first. However, doing so will result in no Configuration Utility being installed. 6 II. USB Printer Installation 1. Connect the printer to the PC and turn the power on. StarPRNT should have already been installed at this time. 2. Once connected, a bubble reading Installing device driver software appears in the lower right corner. Click on it. 3. Click Skip obtaining driver from Windows Update. This prevents Windows from slowing down installation by searching for the driver online; instead, it will locate the driver locally in the StarPRNT directory. 4. Click Yes. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 6

7 5. A popup message confirms when the printer has been successfully installed. Alternate Method: Installing Without the StarPRNT Utility Note: In emergency situations, it is possible to install a Star USB printer without installing StarPRNT first. However, doing so will result in no Configuration Utility being installed. Star recommends installing StarPRNT to ensure the Configuration Utility, Printer Manuals, and other benefits are available. 1. Connect the printer to the PC and turn the power on. Ensure the PC can access the internet. 2. A bubble appears reading Installing device driver software. 3. Windows searches for the correct Star Micronics driver online and automatically installs it. This process can take ten minutes or more, depending on speed of internet connection. 4. A popup message confirms when the printer has been successfully installed. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 7

8 III. Printer Registration in StarPRNT Registering the printer in StarPRNT allows all for the customization of printer functionality using this Configuration Utility. 1. Click the Windows Start button and navigate StarMicronics > Printer Software > Printer Utility. 2. Select the printer model in the left menu bar. Set the Emulation to Star Line Mode. 9 3. Select USB in the left menu bar. The printer driver appears in the middle drop down box. Click Done. 4. Change the printer name if desired and click OK. This will name the printer within the StarPRNT Configuration Utility. Changing this name will not change the printer name in the Devices and Printers (Printers and Faxes in Windows XP) folder. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 9

10 5. The printer is now set up in StarPRNT and can be configured using this utility. 11 IV. Confirming Successful Installation 1. Open StarPRNT and click Check in the left menu bar. A small test prints confirming successful connection. 2. To print a Windows Test Page within StarPRNT, click Windows Printer Queue Management. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 11

12 3. Highlight the printer and click Test Print. A Windows test page prints. This confirms successful installation and the ability to print using the printer driver. Congratulations! You have successfully installed your USB Star Micronics Printer on Windows. 08/2012, V1.1 Page 12
