3 PREFACE INTRODUCTION Thank yu fr purchasing the Mimas Integrated amplifier. It has been engineered t deliver the highest attainable sund quality frm yur music surces. This is its sle purpse. Only the highest grade electrnic cmpnents are used in the Mimas, including: nn-inductive Rederstein metal film resistrs in the signal path; plystyrene, plyprpylene, and electrlytic pwer supply, bypass, and signal capacitrs; lw nise matched vacuum tubes; glass epxy dual mn circuit bards; 16 gauge aluminum chassis; custm wund lw flux pwer transfrmers. PLACEMENT The Mimas shuld be lcated away frm pssible surces f hum such as pwer crds, pwer transfrmers and the like. It shuld nt be lcated near any ther heat surce such as anther pwer amplifier r pwer supply. It must be kept well ventilated any time it is n. If it is psitined within an enclsed space then fans may be warranted. All air vents must remain unbstructed. VENTILATION When installing the Mimas in yur system, make certain t allw a minimum f 4 inches f ventilatin n each side f the unit. Als allw at least 6 inches f ventilatin space abve the unit. The frnt must be pen. BURN IN TIME This unit has a break in perid f abut 400 hurs during which cntinuus imprvement in sund quality will be bserved. IMPORTANT Save all packaging in a dry place away frm fire hazards. Yur Mimas is a precisin electrnic instrument and shuld be prperly packaged any time shipment is made. In the unlikely event that yu have t return yur Mimas t the factry fr service, r if yu send it t us fr updating, the riginal packaging will best prtect the unit frm shipping damage. In rder t achieve the fullest flexibility and enjyment frm yur Mimas, we at Aesthetix recmmend that yu read this manual in full befre cnnecting the unit t yur audi system. Nte: It is imperative that the Mimas be perated in a well-ventilated envirnment and the immediate external temperature be maintained as specified. External cling fans may be required in sme cases. D nt stack any equipment directly abve r belw the Mimas t prtect it frm verheating, as well as the cntinued functinality f any equipment near and arund it. Warning: Each channel is a balanced bridged amplifier, thus the minus speaker terminal is NOT a grund, and cannt be cnnected t a system grund r a ludspeaker system with a cmmn grund. Cnsult yur speaker manufacturer t ensure that any speaker in yur system that will be cnnected t the Mimas des NOT have internal circuitry with a cmmn grund. WARNING United States law prhibits dispsitin f these cmmdities t Libya, Las, Nrth Krea, Cambdia, Syria, Sudan r Cuba unless therwise authrized by the United States. AFTER MARKET and THIRD PARTY MODIFICATIONS Please nte that any aftermarket and/r third party mdificatins will vid the warranty. In the case f changing the feet n a unit, in rder t prevent any damage (which will als nt be cvered under warranty), please verify that the screws being used t secure nn-aesthetix feet d nt screw any deeper int the chassis than the riginal nes. The riginal screw is by 3/8 and extends int the chassis 1/8 inch. Manual Cnventins Fr clarity purpses, a buttn/led name will be in uppercase when instructed t press/view it, and capitalized when it is referred t. When any f the 5 line Inputs is referred t, INPx may be used, where x is 1, 2, 3, 4 r 5. TO PREVENT FIRE OR SHOCK HAZARD, DO NOT ALLOW LIQUIDS TO SPILL OR OBJECTS TO FALL INTO ANY OPENINGS OF THE PRODUCT. THIS UNIT IS SUPPLIED WITH A 3 PIN GROUNDED AC PLUG. ALWAYS INSERT THE AC PLUG INTO A GROUNDED OUTLET. DO NOT REMOVE THE GROUND PIN OR DISABLE THE GROUND FOR ANY PURPOSE. BEFORE MAKING ANY CONNECTIONS TO THE MIMAS, FIRST TURN OFF THE POWER AND THEN DISCONNECT THE AC POWER CORD. WHEN INSTALLING THE MIMAS IN YOUR SYSTEM, MAKE CERTAIN TO ALLOW A MINIMUM OF 4 INCHES OF VENTILATION ON EACH SIDE OF THE UNIT. ALSO ALLOW AT LEAST 6 INCHES OF VENTILATION SPACE ABOVE THE UNIT. IMPROPER VENTILATION OF THE UNIT MAY CAUSE OVERHEATING, WHICH MAY DAMAGE THE UNIT AND CAUSE A FIRE. PLACE THE UNIT ON A SOLID SURFACE ONLY. I.E. NOT ON CARPET, ETC. DO NOT PLACE THE MIMAS NEAR HEAT SOURCES SUCH AS DIRECT SUNLIGHT, STOVES, HEAT REGISTERS, RADIATORS OR OTHER HEAT PRODUCING EQUIPMENT. TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ANALOG OUTPUT CIRCUITRY, BE CERTAIN NOT TO SHORT THE OUTPUT SIGNAL TO GROUND. ENSURE THAT YOUR AUDIO OUTPUT CABLES DO NOT HAVE ANY INTERNAL SHORTS BEFORE CONNECTING THEM TO THE MIMAS. IF REPLACEMENT OF THE AC LINE FUSE AND/OR ANY INTERNAL FUSE BECOMES NECESSARY, REPLACE ONLY WITH SAME VALUE AND TYPE OF FUSE. NEVER BYPASS THE FUSE. IF THE AC CORD BECOMES DAMAGED, DO NOT USE IT. IMMEDIATELY REPLACE IT WITH A NEW ONE OF THE SAME OR BETTER RATING. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE MIMAS BE OPERATED IN A WELL VENTILATED ENVIRONMENT AND THE IMMEDIATE EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE BE MAINTAINED AS SPECIFIED. EXTERNAL COOLING FANS MAY BE REQUIRED IN SOME CASES. DO NOT STACK ANY EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY ABOVE OR BELOW THE MIMAS AS TO PROTECT IT FROM OVERHEATING, AS WELL AS THE CONTINUED FUNCTIONALITY OF ANY EQUIPMENT NEAR AND AROUND IT. EACH CHANNEL IS A BALANCED BRIDGED AMPLIFIER, THUS THE MINUS SPEAKER TERMINAL IS NOT A GROUND, AND CANNOT BE CONNECTED TO A SYSTEM GROUND OR LOUDSPEAKER SYSTEM WITH A COMMON GROUND. CONSULT YOUR SPEAKER MANUFACTURER TO ENSURE THAT ANY SPEAKER IN YOUR SYSTEM THAT WILL BE CONNECTED TO THE MIMAS DOES NOT HAVE INTERNAL CIRCUITRY WITH A COMMON GROUND. IF THE TOP COVER HAS TO BE REMOVED, FIRST TURN OFF THE REAR PANEL POWER SWITCH AND WAIT 15 MINUTES. THEN REMOVE THE TWO 6-32 PANHEAD SCREWS AT THE TOP OF THE REAR PANEL AND LIFT THE BACK OF THE TOP COVER UPWARDS. 4

After the rear panel MAIN POWER switch is turned n and the Mimas has cmpleted its Warm Up cycle, press the frnt panel STANDBY buttn t exit the standby mde. Pressing this buttn again will put the Mimas int STANDBY and illuminate the Standby LED. 13. Standby LED. Illuminates when the Mimas is in Standby, flashes when cming ut f Standby. 14. SETUP buttn. Accesses all setup menus. Press t exit the Setup Menu system. 15. Setup LED. It is illuminated when in any f the Setup menus. 16. LOCK LED. Illuminates when the Mimas lcks nt a digital input signal. 17. Pressing the right side f the DISPLAY will raise the vlume, r increment a value when in a Setup menu. 18. HEADPHONE jack. When enabled, the utput signal is re-ruted frm the main utputs, t the headphnes. 6

7 Rear Panel Layut Figure 2 - Rear Panel Layut screws t secure the tp cver. Befre remving tp cver, turn ff rear panel MAIN POWER switch and wait 15 minutes. Then remve the tw 6-32 screws and pull up tp cver frm the rear panel. 2. Right channel Plus BINDING POST. Cnnect plus speaker wire fr the right speaker t this terminal. 3. Right channel Minus BINDING POST. Cnnect minus speaker wire fr the right speaker t this terminal. DO NOT CONNECT TO GROUND. 4. Left channel balanced and single-ended Analg Input jacks. 5. Left channel balanced and single-ended Preamp Output. 6. AC POWER INPUT and main fuse. Spare fuse inside. 7. MAIN POWER Switch. Discnnects AC t all circuits. It is recmmended that this be left ON at all times during regular use with the exceptin f whenever cables are cnnected/discnnected r when the unit is nt ging t be used fr an extended perid f time. 8. Left channel Plus BINDING POST. Cnnect the plus speaker wire fr the right speaker t this terminal. 9. Optinal Phn Input mdule. 10. Optinal Digital t Audi (DAC) input mdule. 11. Right channel balanced and single-ended Analg Input jacks. 12. Right channel balanced and single-ended Preamp Output. 13. IR extender input jack. Cnnect external IR receiver t this input 14. DB9 RS232 cnnectr. Used fr cnnecting a system cntrl device t the Mimas t cntrl and mnitr its functins. 15. Remte Trigger jack. When set t d s, as the Standby buttn is pressed t take the Mimas ut f standby, the rear panel trigger jack becmes active with a 5 VDC signal. A cmpatible receiving device such as anther Pwer Amplifier will receive this signal and then change its mde frm standby t perate. When the Standby buttn is pressed again the signal ges t 0V and puts the receiving device int standby mde. The Remte Trigger Jack can als be setup as a trigger input, which when receiving a 5VDC signal, takes the Mimas ut f standby. 16. Left channel Minus BINDING POST. Cnnect the minus speaker wire fr the left speaker t this terminal. DO NOT CONNECT TO GROUND. 7

8 Wiring Diagram Figure 3 - Examples f Typical Input and Output Cnnectins CAUTION: Make all input and utput cnnectins befre turning the Mimas Main Pwer Switch n. WARNING! The Mimas rear panel Main Pwer switch MUST always be turned OFF when making r changing speaker cnnectins. AC Pwer: The Mimas may be plugged directly int an un-switched wall utlet. Althugh prprietary RFI (radi-frequency interference) filtering is built int the Mimas, in sme situatins an AC pwer-line filter may prvide additinal snic benefits. 8

9 Initial Setup With the AC crd discnnected, remve the Mimas tp cver by first remving the tw Philips screws n the rear panel clsest t the tp, then lift each rear crner ne at a time. Install 2 tubes int the Mimas. See Mimas Tube Guide. Afterwards replace the tp cver and secure it with the same 2 Philips screws. Cnnect all surces t the Mimas rear panel inputs. If used, cnnect a trigger cable t the device that the Mimas standby will either cntrl, r be cntrlled by. Cnnect a third party IR extender, if desired. Cnnect the speakers t the Mimas utputs. Please adhere t all warnings and references in this dcumentatin with regards t nt cnnecting the Mimas speaker minus (-) terminal t any grund. Cnnect the AC crd. Turn n the rear panel pwer switch. Each time the rear panel pwer switch is turned n, the Mimas will g int Warm Up mde fr up t 2 minutes. The timing f this is dependent n the current temperature f the Output mdule heatsinks. During this time the display will read WARM UP. Nte: If using the ptinal HRC-3 hand held remte, it is shipped in Transprt mde (ff). It must first be set t Active. Please refer t the Metis remte wner s manual. Install battery(s) in the hand held remte cntrl. CAUTION! T avid lud pps and pssible speaker damage, turn n all ther system cmpnents befre taking the Mimas ut f standby. Standby After the Mimas cmpletes its Warm up phase, it will then g int Standby and the Standby LED will illuminate. Pressing the STANDBY buttn will initiate the startup prcess. At this time the blue Standby LED will blink fr a few minutes befre displaying the Main Menu. 9

11 OPERATION Nte: Put the Mimas int Standby befre turning ff the rear panel AC Pwer Switch. It is nrmal that a slight pp may be heard when ging int r cming ut f Standby. This is due t the amplifier switching frm high bias t lw bias. Imprtant Nte: In rder t extend the life f the tubes, d nt have a surce playing int the Mimas while it is in STANDBY. Mute the surce first. Main Menu When the Mimas cmes ut f standby, it will be muted and the Main Menu will be displayed. The Main Menu cnsists f the currently selected input and the master vlume level. If the currently selected input is in Bypass mde, BP will be displayed instead f the vlume level. Pressing the left r right side f the Display lens (UP/DOWN n the remte) will raise r lwer the vlume when nt in Bypass. Input Select Repeatedly pressing the frnt panel r remte INPUT buttn advances the currently selected input t the next. The factry default Line input names are INPx, where x is 1 thrugh 5 crrespnding t the rear panel input jack labeling. The factry default phn input names are P1 and P2. Display When the DISPLAY buttn is pressed, all LEDs will extinguish. Pressing any buttn will turn n the display and applicable indicatr LEDs. If the buttn pressed was INPUT r MUTE, the display and LEDs will extinguish again after 5 secnds. If the STANDBY buttn was pressed, the unit will immediately enter the Standby mde. In Standby, the Standby LED is always illuminated, regardless f whether the display was n r ff. Pressing the DISPLAY buttn while the display is ff, r during the 5 secnd timeut perid, will turn n the display and nrmal peratin will return. Nte: The LED fr the DISPLAY buttn is intentinally inactive unless in a Setup menu, where it may be used t select a submenu. Mute Pressing the MUTE buttn will alternately mute r un-mute the unit. When the Mute LED is illuminated, there will be n audi at the speaker utputs. The Mute feature is available in mst Setup menus. Vlume The vlume can be raised r lwered by pressing the left r right side f the frnt panel display, r the UP and DOWN buttns n the remte. 11

12 Setup The SETUP buttn accesses a set f features that are prgrammable fr each individual Input, and anther set f features that are Glbal, r General. Pressing the Setup buttn nce accesses the General (GEN) sub menu. Pressing the right side f the display lens takes the user t the (SETx) settings by input, beginning with Input 1 (SET1). Each time the Setup submenu is accessed, the last used (GEN r SETx) Setup type will display first. Each time the Mimas cmes ut f Standby, the default Setup type first displayed will be GEN. When in any Setup menu, pressing the SETUP buttn nce will exit and return the user t the Main Menu. Nte: T auditin changes in the Setup submenus, the user must re-select the edited input. This des nt apply t the Input Level (Offset), Balance and Headphne features, where edits are audible in real time with each parameter change. General The General setup ptins are: Enabling/disabling the Headphne jack. Shifting the Left/Right Balance. Creating a [vlume] Start Level when the Mimas cmes ut f standby. Setting a maximum level that the Mimas can be turned up t (Child prfing, speaker prtectin and neighbr cmpatibility). Set the Mimas frnt panel IR receiver t respnd t cmmand sets frm either the Mimas r Aesthetix Calyps HRC-2 remte cntrl. Setting up the frnt panel display brightness ptins. Restratin f factry presets. At any time that a sub menu is displayed, pressing the INPUT buttn will advance t the next parameter. Pressing the left and/r right side f the frnt panel lens will edit the displayed parameter value. The Mute feature is active in all submenus with the exceptin f Balance. 12

13 Headphnes By default the Headphne feature is set t OFF. The Mimas will aut sense when headphnes are plugged in and the display will indicate that the Headphne (HP) jack is enabled (ON). This will disable the speaker utputs. When the headphnes are unplugged, the Mimas will disable the Headphne jack and enable the speaker utputs. Cautin is t be given t nte the Master Vlume level prir t unplugging headphnes. The Headphne jack setting can be changed while headphnes are plugged in. This is useful when the user wishes t leave the headphnes cnnected and g back and frth between listening t the speakers r the headphnes. T enable r disable the Headphne jack, first press the SETUP buttn. If the menu des nt say GEN, repeatedly press the right side f the display until it des. Press the INPUT buttn. The display will read OFF HP r ON HP. Tggle this parameter by pressing the left/right side f the display r the UP/DOWN buttns n the remte. Press the SETUP buttn t exit, r the INPUT buttn t access additinal prgrammable features. Balance Cautin!! It is imprtant t nte that any time the headphnes are unplugged frm the frnt panel, the speakers will autmatically be enabled. Please nte the Master Vlume level prir t discnnecting the headphnes. The Balance can be shifted 12dB t the left r right. Ging past that turns the ppsite speaker ff. T access this menu, press the SETUP buttn. If the menu des nt shw GEN, repeatedly press the right side f the display until it des. Press the INPUT buttn tw times t display BAL 00. Press the vlume UP r DOWN buttn n the remte, r the right/left side f the frnt panel lens t set the desired Balance. Press the SETUP buttn t return t the Main menu. Start Level The factry default is 0 and the prgrammable range is T set the vlume level that the Mimas will be at when cming ut f Standby, press the SETUP buttn. If the menu des nt shw GEN, repeatedly press the right side f the display until it des. Press the INPUT buttn three times t display STL XX. Press the vlume UP buttn n the remte r the right side f the frnt panel lens t set the desired level. Press the SETUP buttn t return t the Main menu. Maximum Level The factry default is 88 and the prgrammable range is T set the maximum vlume level that the Mimas will g t, press the SETUP buttn. If the menu des nt shw GEN, repeatedly press the right side f the display until it des. Press the INPUT buttn fur times t display MAX: XX. Press the vlume dwn buttn n the remte r the left side f the frnt panel lens t set the desired level. Press the SETUP buttn t return t the Main menu. IR (Infrared) The factry default is Mima[s]. T set whether the Mimas respnds t a Mimas r Calyps remte, press the SETUP buttn. If the menu des nt shw GEN, repeatedly press the right side f the display until it des. Press the INPUT buttn five times t display MIMA IR. Press the vlume UP r DOWN buttn n the remte r either side f the frnt panel lens t select the desired respnse. Press the SETUP buttn t return t the Main menu. 13

14 Display (Advanced Display Functinality) The Mimas is able t sense the ambient light level in the rm and adjust its frnt panel LED brightness accrdingly. While the factry settings will wrk fr mst situatins, there may be times when adjustment t the settings is useful. The Mimas will read the current ambient rm brightness and break it dwn nt 16 levels (00-15), where 00 is a very dark rm and 15 is a very bright rm, as measured at the center f the frnt panel display lens. As the rm brightness changes, the Mimas will read it and set the brightness f the display accrding the user s desire. The factry presets will bring the LED brightness dwn as the rm darkens. This lw LED brightness level will be difficult t read r cmpletely washed ut then the rm brightens, s as this happens, the LED brightness increases. Shuld it be desired t edit these settings, frm the main menu, press the SETUP buttn and if the menu des nt shw GEN, repeatedly press the right side f the display until it des. Press the INPUT buttn six times t display DISP. Nte that the Display buttn LED illuminates, indicating that pressing the DISPLAY buttn will access the Display brightness Setup submenu. Once the DISPLAY buttn is pressed, L104 XX will appear in the display. In this example, L1 refers t Light Level is the current ambient light level the Mimas is reading in the rm. XX is the value the user can change the display brightness t when the Mimas reads the rm light level at 1. As the desired value is edited, the display brightness changes t shw the user hw bright r dim the current setting will be. Nte: If edited via the frnt panel, the user s hand r bdy culd shadw the path f the ambient rm light level that the Mimas light sensr reads. Therefre it is recmmended t view/edit this feature via the hand held remte. Restre (Factry Settings) The Restre feature restres the factry settings fr all prgrammable parameters. Frm the Main menu, press the SETUP buttn and if the menu des nt shw GEN, repeatedly press the right side f the display until it des. Press the INPUT buttn seven times t display REST. The Display LED will illuminate and the display will read NO. Press the right side f the Display s that it reads YES, and then press the DISPLAY buttn. Pressing any buttn when the Display reads NO, will have n effect n the current settings. This ptin will allw the user t abrt. Press the SETUP buttn t return t the Main menu. Remte Trigger * * * The remte trigger cntrl allws an external cmpnent t cntrl the STANDBY state f the Mimas. Cnnect the Trigger Out jack frm a hst cmpnent t the Remte Trigger jack n the rear panel f the Mimas. The trigger vltage shuld be between +5 and +12 vlts DC. There are tw signal types that may be used; level and pulse. The Mimas autmatically senses which type f trigger signal it is receiving and respnds accrdingly. A psitive pulse that is greater than 100mS is interpreted as a Level trigger whereas shrter pulses are treated as Pulse triggers. The minimum detectable pulse is 50uS. When a Level type signal is received, the Mimas will be taken ut f standby and when that signal drps t zer, the Mimas will g int standby. When a psitive pulse signal is received, the Mimas will tggle between STANDBY and OPERATE mdes, duplicating the actin f the frnt panel STANDBY buttn. Use a 1/8 (3.5mm) mn plug fr this jack. The tip is psitive and the sleeve is grund. 14

Bypass (Advanced) In the Hme Theater Bypass mde, the bypass ruting f the incming signal can be set in ne f tw ways: Sftware (S/W) r Hardware (H/W). S/W rutes the signal thrugh all internal circuitry in the standard way, but at a fixed vlume level. This fixed level is user adjustable. When H/W is selected, the signal is ruted frm the input jacks, directly t the pwer amp sectin, thereby bypassing all preamp paths, including the ffset and vacuum tubes. Nte: The Input must be set t BYP (see the Hme Theater Bypass sectin n previus page) fr these parameters t have an effect. T set this up frm the Main menu, press the SETUP buttn nce, then press the left r right side f the Display (UP/DOWN buttns n the remte) t select SETx, where x is the desired bypassed input. Press the INPUT buttn five times s that the display reads ADV. The Display LED is illuminated, indicating that it is t be used t select the Bypass mde. Press the Display buttn, then use the left/right side f the display (UP/DOWN buttns n the remte) t select H/W r S/W. If the Bypass mde is set t S/W, the user can then press the INPUT buttn t access the sftware bypass fixed level. The default level is 80. Press the left/right side f the display (UP/DOWN buttns n the remte) t edit the vlume level that will be used when this sftware bypassed Input is selected. Nte: If H/W is selected and the INPUT buttn is pressed, the user will be returned t the ADV. Sub menu. Press the SETUP buttn t return t the Main Menu. Internal Gain Setting * * * There are gain shunts (2 per channel) that allw the internal gain t be set at 0 r 15dB. Changes t these settings must be cmpleted by an authrized service technician, and the unit must have its AC crd remved fr at least 15 minutes prir t remving the tp cver. Cntact yur dealer if these settings need t be adjusted. The shunt psitins are detailed in Appendix A. Cautin: t reduce the risk f electrical shck, d nt remve any f the cver panels. RS232 N user-serviceable parts inside. Refer all servicing t qualified service persnnel nly. All functins f the Mimas can be cntrlled and mnitred via RS232, using the DB9 cnnectr. As lng as the rear panel pwer switch in turned n, the RS232 circuitry is always active, thus allwing the Mimas t be taken ut f STANDBY via RS232. Refer t Appendix D fr mre infrmatin n using RS

17 Phn When the ptinal Phn input mdule is installed, additinal submenus will be revealed in the Setup Input sectin. The Phn submenus are shwn belw in the right-hand clumn. Therefre if the cartridge being used is a mving magnet, begin by setting the Cartridge Type t MM. The factry default is MC. 17

In the Setup Phn submenus, the first is referred t as P1 and the secnd as P2. Bth can stre unique settings fr different cartridges. T set the Phn inputs t their apprpriate values, navigate t the Phn Setup submenu by pressing the SETUP buttn, then press the right side f the lens t get t the Setup Input menu. Cntinue pressing the right side f the lens until the desired phn input (P1 r P2) is displayed. Cartridge Type As indicated n the previus page, if the cartridge type being used fr the currently selected phn input is a Mving Magnet, press the INPUT buttn 4 times t display the Cartridge Type submenu and press the lens Left r Right t change the type t MM. Resistive Lad Frm Setup/Input/Phn, press the INPUT buttn nce. The Resistive Lad sub-menu will be displayed. If the Cartridge Type is set t MC (default), the available Lad values will be: 47K, 20K, 10K, 5K, 2.5K, 1K, 750 hms, 500, 375, 250, 200, 150, 125, 100, 75 and 50 hms. If the Cartridge Type is set t MM, the available Lad values will be 47K, 20K, 10K and 5K hms. Capacitive Lad Only when the Cartridge Type is set t MM will this sub-menu appear. The available ptins are: 100pF, 220pF, 330pF and 470pF. Gain If the Cartridge Type is set t MC, the available Gain values will be: 72, 68, 64 and 60dB. If the Cartridge Type is set t MM, the available Gain values will be: 56, 52, 48 and 44dB.
