The vendors included have been selected by Wainhouse Research (WR) as representing >90% of the total worldwide volume in terms of units shipped. The data has been collected directly from each vendor, but in some cases has been estimated by WR from known data points (previous shipment reports, briefing, publically available information, and growth percentages). Because several vendors provide data under NDA, we do not publish revenue market shares (but do for unit shipments). 4 Forecast Overview This report delivers a quantified view of the worldwide Unified Communications (UC) market. We gather data from over 100 platform vendors, service providers, and IT decision makers. Sources include shipment reports, briefings, annual reports, and survey data, all combined to create an estimate of purchased seats, active seats, and associated revenues. All solutions included in this forecast are capable of delivering a unified user experience, supporting the following set of features at a minimum: Presence Contact list / directory Instant messaging VoIP audio IP video Desktop (content) sharing Collaboration with three or more participants via IM, audio, video and desktop (content) sharing UC platforms are deployed in one of three models: On Premises or deployed in the enterprise s data center Private deployed in a provider s data center, with the service dedicated to the enterprise Public deployed in a provider s data center in a multitenant model UC seats, or licenses, are provisioned in one of three feature groups: Enterprise Voice (EV) IP telephony-only solutions, primarily using a desk phone Unified Communications (UC) client-only solutions with no PBX calling features and no PSTN access EV+UC telephony-enabled UC solutions When deployment models and seat-types are combined, the market is segmented into 9 distinct categories. This forecast includes aggregate sizing and individual market analysis across these segments. 4

6 UC Terms and Definitions Seat Types Term Acronym Definition Examples Unified Communications UC UC provides the user with a software client that unifies a specific set of features, including a presence-enabled directory, instant messaging (IM), audio (VoIP), IP video, the ability to share an application or desktop, and the ability to conference with 3 or more participants. Skype for Business - E1, E3 or Enterprise CAL Google Hangouts Enterprise Voice EV EV is focused on the telephony experience PBX features, access to the PSTN as well as VoIP calling, and capable of supporting a UC experience. The user often receives a desk phone and/or a voice-only soft client. Cisco CUCM + desk phone Avaya IP Office + desk phone EV-enabled UC EV+UC EV+UC solutions are simply the combined feature set a user with an EV-enabled UC client can send and receive calls to and from the PSTN, plus all the unified features listed above, i.e. IM and presence, VoIP, video, etc. Skype for Business E5 or Enterprise & Plus CAL Cisco CUCM + Jabber 8
7 UC Terms and Definitions Deployment Models Term Abbreviation Definition Examples On Premises On Prem On Prem solutions are deployed in the enterprise s data center. CUCM, Skype for Business Server, or any other UC solution deployed on prem. Private Priv Private solutions are deployed in a provider s data center, and the application is dedicated to the customer. Cisco HCS, Skype for Business Server, or any other UC solution dedicated per customer, and deployed in a provider s data center. Public Pub Public solutions are deployed in a provider s data center, and the application supports multiple customers (multi-tenant). Office 365 E1/3/5, 8x8, Vonage, Fuze, all BroadSoft hosters, etc. 9
8 UC Terms and Definitions Forecast Variables Term Definition Seats UC-Capable Active UC-Capable Seats Passive UC-Capable Seats Revenues Average Sales Price A seat refers to a current and supported licenses. Note the average user may have more than one active licenses across different UC platforms think of Seats in terms of a given solution, not total number of users. UC-Capable seats refer to every UC seat tracked in this forecast EV, UC, and EV+UC. Active seats are those provisioned and used within the last 30 days. Passive seats have been purchased, but are not actively used. This may be due to provisioning delays, deployment challenges, or UC licenses purchased in a bundle. Calculated based on the following three categories of costs to the enterprise: licensing, support and maintenance, and voice plans; revenues reflect actual street pricing, and are applied based on the license-type in question: i.e. hosted seats include support charges, while prem seats include estimated maintenance; EV seats include a voice plan, while UC seats do not. Reflects the average street price per seat per year. 10

10 UC solutions are provisioned in three primary configurations as depicted below. Simply put, most IP PBXs support a UC experience today but are often deployed as telephony-oriented solutions, with desk phones as the primary device: Enterprise Voice (EV) these are UC-capable platforms deployed as a telephony-focused experience. The user is provided a deskphone as their primary communication path. Unified Communications (UC) these are UC platforms deployed without the ability to send and receive calls to/from the PSTN but they can communicate with others via IM, VoIP, and video. EV enabled UC the user has a UC client and can send/receive calls to/from the PSTN, in addition to VoIP, video, etc. EV requirements: PBX features / PSTN Telephony support Support IP Telephony - VoIP Support for UC features as an option Enterprise Voice (EV) EV+UC: Telephony-enabled UC experience, including a client, UC, and EV features. EV-enabled UC (EV+UC) UC requirements: Presence-enabled directory, IM, A/V/W Support 2+ participant A/V/W Software client or browser support Unified Communications (UC) 25
11 UC solutions are further deployed in three primary architectures: On Premises these are deployed in the enterprise data center Private deployed in a provider s data center, but the service is dedicated to the enterprise. Because the service is dedicated, the provider s cost model is higher, and provisioning and upgrade cycles are often impacted. Public deployed in a provider s data center, but the service is multi-tenant. This allows for more continuous release cycles, faster upgrades, and lower overall cost models for the provider.
