Intelligent Buildings Cncept The intelligent building cncept helps cnnect multiple devices, peple, and prcesses t drive new user experiences and better business utcmes by cnverging multiple, disparate building netwrks, systems and services via a secure and intelligent netwrk platfrm. Such systems help unlck new experiences and efficiencies whilst lwering building perating csts ver the typical 50-year lifetime f a building. Transfrmative user experience: Different building systems, such as lighting, heating, air cnditining, IP, VIP, as well as physical security and access cntrl, can nw easily and securely wrk tgether. They can adapt t users needs in real time t make spaces wrk better fr individuals, grups, functins, and teams, e.g. heating and cling systems can be dynamically adapted in indr spaces based n real-time ccupancy. In additin, smart systems can significantly imprve the prductivity, safety, and cmfrt f building ccupants. Lwer-cst, mre efficient building and tenant services: The intelligent building lwers the cst f building systems installatin, peratin, and management thrugh unified cmmunicatins and centralized cntrl f glbal facilities. It breaks thrugh sils f independently perated building systems t make it easier t autmate all building services. New business insights: Thrugh digitisatin, it nw becmes pssible t put sensr data int huge databases that can be analysed using neural netwrks and artificial intelligence t gain deeper insight int hw emplyees, custmers, and guests are using indr spaces, allwing imprved business decisins t be made abut use f valuable real estate such as rm, flr and building ccupancy. 2. Ethernet-Based Lw Vltage Lighting Lw vltage LED lighting is playing an increasingly imprtant rle within Intelligent Buildings, driven by the adptin f Categry 6A Ethernet cabling t luminaires. Lw vltage lighting marks a new era and new pprtunities fr the cabling industry, as lighting prjects invlving hundreds and thusands f luminaires and sensrs can nly be deplyed viably and reliably using wired slutins Why LED Lighting fr Intelligent Buildings? LED luminaires ffer three cmpelling reasns fr inclusin in the intelligent building: 1. They cnsume less electricity. 2. They generate less heat. 3. They are 100% dimmable. 1

LiFi netwrking als transcends many f the limitatins assciated with WiFi netwrks, such as limited bandwidth and ptential carcingenic effects. Lng life Luminaires: LED luminaires have a lng life, typically 50,000 hurs and centralised LED drivers drastically reduce maintenance csts. Circadian rhythm lighting can increase prductivity up t 16 percent, aid patient recvery in hspitals and imprve learning in schls. Getting peple t destinatins faster: Digital lighting slutins can be integrated with digital signage and wayfinding applicatins that autmatically cnnect with emplyees and visitrs persnal devices. Pwering new retail experiences: In retail envirnments, smart lighting pwered by the netwrk can be used t: Measure stre traffic patterns; better understand custmer and staff behaviur and traffic flw t identify premium lcatins fr featured prducts and services and ptimize sales. Feature special prmtins, sale items and cntinually change them withut having t make physical lighting changes. Guide custmers t specific items r areas with light. Clsely mimic natural light t shw truer clurs and reduce return rates. 2

3 Integrated System Technlgies Ltd, Pwering Intelligent Lighting Systems The majrity f intelligent lighting systems cnsist f a centralised LED pwer system that prvides a DC current t luminaires r sensrs installed in the ceiling. There are tw ways f achieving this: Pwer ver Ethernet (PE): A standard that allws bth pwer and cntrl signals t be transmitted alng the same RJ45 cable t an intelligent light cntaining an electrnic LED and cntrl interface. PaE slutins: A system where manufacturers prvide pwer t LED fixtures frm centralised LED driver units, which may include the ability t use sensrs with RJ45 r ther cnnectin methds Pwer ver Ethernet (PE) Systems PE systems are cmmnly used tday within buildings t supprt VIP telephne and security CCTV systems, where devices have lw pwer requirements. There are tw reasns why PE is nt currently being deplyed in lighting installatins: 1. N ratified standard fr high pwer (>25W) devices. 2. Current high-pwer systems are hugely expensive (> 250 per luminaire pint). PE systems have a significant cst implicatin as the nly high pwer (>25W) systems available are prprietary, which limits high vlume deplyments. Table 1: Cmparisn f PE and PaE slutins 3

4 Integrated System Technlgies Ltd, Pwer and Ethernet (PaE) slutins A new, highly cst-effective DC-based slutin frm Integrated System Technlgies termed Pwer and Ethernet (PaE) ffers imprved benefits ver standard PE, withut the cst prhibitive PE end pints (similar t LED drivers), whilst imprving verall system reliability. In cntrast t PE, the PaE digital lighting system prvides Ethernet cnnectivity t a centralised LED driver rack unit, which then prvides DC pwer t remte fixtures r sensrs via standard PE RJ45 Categry 6A cabling infrastructures. The advantages f PaE Slutins: There are significant advantages f the idrive Pwer and Ethernet slutins, including: Installatin Phase Savings: Rapid setup and prgramming cmpared t traditinal cntrl systems, such as DALI. Ethernet-based systems ffer 500x speed imprvement fr cmmissining. Reduced cmmissining csts: n need fr prgramming engineers. Simple lw vltage wiring required: n need fr specialised electricians, as mains vltages are nt prevalent in the system. Reduces the need fr large mains distributin bards within cnfined riser cupbards. Significantly fewer issues with inrush currents and RCD trip currents cmpared t standard LED driver slutins. Categry 6A cabling infrastructure reduces installatin csts up t 20% fr Ethernet-based cnnected lighting systems, cmpared with cnventinal ACpwered systems. Enables prject timetables t be accelerated: secndary wrks can be undertaken during lighting installatin as lw vltage safe. Maintenance Phase Savings: Centralised idrive LED drivers are easy t access, reducing the need fr high level maintenance wrk. Reduces dwntime and ut f hurs labur csts: LED drivers are easy t access, withut disrupting retail spaces, schl, hspital and cmmercial buildings. Less client disruptin results in imprved custmer satisfactin. Very easy t change lighting cnfiguratin, as systems are DC-based with simple RJ45 plug-and-play cnnectins. Simple t add, remve r replace fixtures/drivers as recmmissining is very simple, withut the need fr expensive engineers. A simple way f cmparing traditinal high vltage DALI-enabled lighting and lw vltage PaE installatins is shwn in Figures 1(a) and 1(b), which clearly demnstrate hw lw vltage DC PaE systems reduce the amunt f wiring and cmplexity fr installatins. 4

Optimizatin f Business Operatins: PaE systems and digital lighting create business value beynd pure lighting by utilising built-in sensrs and harnessing big data analytics t drive better business utcmes: Imprved building use: With in-depth analytics it is pssible t gain visibility int use f spaces t better manage, plan, and ptimize a building s use. Imprved physical security: Lighting pwered by the netwrk can use sensractivated clsed-circuit televisin (CCTV) and access cntrls t secure sensitive areas, r in a retail envirnment t reduce theft. With the current ability f standard Ethernet slutins, PaE systems allw scalable lighting systems t many tens f thusands f devices, making them uniquely psitined cmpared t RF based slutins, which are limited t hundreds f devices at mst. 4. Lw Vltage Lighting: lw cst installatin and mre flexibility The verall capital expenditure, installatin and cmmissining csts fr a variety f LED technlgy slutins and installatin methds are shwn in Figure 2, which cmpares five slutins, including centralised Pwer ver Ethernet (PE); decentralised znal PE; centralised PaE with intelligent cntrl platfrm; PaE system cntrlled by an existing in-huse BMS, plus a traditinal high vltage LED slutin. 5

In cmparisn, the PaE slutin including the intelligent cntrl system ffers a significant benefit ver traditinal high vltage LED slutins and reduces csts by 65% cmpared t PE based slutins. 5. Cnclusins Thrugh Integrated System Technlgies idrive Pwer and Ethernet (PaE) lighting slutin, the structured cabling industry has a significant pprtunity t deply large scale intelligent lighting slutins using categry 6A cabling and LED light fixtures at a prject pricing level substantially less than traditin high vltage electrical wrks. The idrive PaE slutin utilises exactly the same infrastructure as traditinal PE slutins but imprves maintenance aspects whilst ffering clients a future-prfed building infrastructure fit fr the next 25 years. It is anticipated the amunt f additinal cabling pints required fr lighting and related sensrs will create a renascence ver the next decade fr the cabling industry. 6
