5 1. Executive Summary Nutanix Cmplete Cluster is a scalable virtualizatin platfrm fr desktp, server, and big-data deplyments. The Nutanix Cmplete Cluster cnsists f mdular blcks that include cmpute, strage, and netwrk. This design greatly reduces cst while increasing perfrmance and scalability empwering yu t deliver a reliable and cnsistent user-experience. Each mdular blck includes cmpute, strage and netwrking alng with the vsphere hypervisr preladed s custmers can start prvisining virtual machines in less than 30 minutes. 6 The Nutanix Distributed File System (NDFS), the cre f Nutanix Cmplete Cluster, tethers high-perfrmance slid-state strage directly t enterprise applicatins while preserving the high capacity that the SATA HDD tier prvides thrugh its adaptive infrmatin lifecycle management (ILM) capabilities. NDFS amplifies the pwer f server-attached flash in the realm f enterprise virtualizatin by clcating high-perfrmance, lcalized strage I/O with Ggle-like, scale-ut distributed redundancy via high speed 10 GbE tp-f-rack switches. The base cluster ships with fur industry-standard x86 servers bundled with VMware's hypervisr in a 2U, 85-lb., SAN-free server appliance. This dcument makes recmmendatins fr the ptimizatin and scaling f VMware View deplyments n Nutanix. It shws the scalability f the Nutanix Cmplete Cluster and prvides detailed perfrmance and cnfiguratin infrmatin n the scale-ut capabilities f the cluster. 7 3. Slutin Overview 3.1. What is the Nutanix Architecture? Nutanix Cmplete Cluster is a scale-ut cluster f high-perfrmance ndes, r servers, each running a standard hypervisr and cntaining prcessrs, memry and lcal strage (cnsisting f PCIe-SSD Flash and high capacity SATA disk drives). Each nde runs virtual machines just like a standard virtual machine hst. In additin, lcal strage frm all ndes is virtualized int a unified pl by the Nutanix Distributed File System (NDFS) (Figure 1). In effect, NDFS acts like an advanced SAN that uses lcal SSDs and disks frm all ndes t stre virtual machine data. Virtual machines running n the cluster write data t NDFS as if they were writing t a SAN. NDFS is VM aware and prvides advanced data management features. It brings data clser t virtual machines by string the data lcally n the system, resulting in higher perfrmance at a lwer cst. Nutanix Cmplete Cluster can hrizntally scale frm a few ndes t a large number f ndes, enabling rganizatins t scale their infrastructure as their needs grw. 8 Figure 1 Nutanix Architecture Inspired by the Ggle File System, NDFS delivers a unified pl f strage frm all ndes acrss the cluster, leveraging techniques including striping, replicatin, aut-tiering, errr detectin, failver and autmatic recvery. This pl can then be presented as shared strage resurces t VMs fr seamless supprt f features like vmtin, HA, and DRS, alng with industry-leading data management features. Additinal ndes can be added in a plug-and-play manner in this high-perfrmance scale-ut architecture t build a cluster that will easily grw as yur needs d. VMware View n Nutanix 8

8 3.2. What is VMware View? VMware View enables the simplificatin f desktp and applicatin management while prviding an ptimized user experiences with high security. View allws IT t centrally manage desktps, applicatins, and data while increasing flexibility and custmizatin at the endpint fr the user. 11 3.3. VMware View the Nutanix Way A Nutanix Blck ships as a rackable 2U unit cntaining fur high-perfrmance server ndes with lcal strage t run and stre virtual machines. PCIe-SSD Flash cmbined with heat-ptimized tiering f data deliver the high perfrmance f SSDs at the cst f hard drives t tackle VDI perfrmance issues caused by bt and lgin strms with ease. This design greatly reduces verall cst and cmplexity while increasing perfrmance and scalability in a fully integrated multi wrklad slutin. 1 Unlike many VDI reference architectures that are available tday frm ther vendrs, the Nutanix apprach f mdular scale-ut enables custmers t select any initial deplyment size and grw in mre granular 100 virtual desktp increments. This remves the hurdle f a large up-frnt infrastructure purchase that a custmer will need many mnths r years t grw int, ensuring a faster time-t-value fr the VDI implementatin. The Nutanix slutin is fully integrated with the VMware APIs fr Array Integratin (VAAI), View Cmpser, and View Cmpser fr Array Integratin (VCAI) t enable yu t prvide the best pssible experience t the end user with the flexibility f a single mdular platfrm. Why run VMware View n Nutanix? Mdular incremental scale: With the Nutanix slutin yu can start small and scale. A single Nutanix blck prvides up t 400 desktps in a cmpact 2U ftprint. Given the mdularity f the slutin, yu can granularly scale per-nde (100 desktps), per-blck (400 desktps), r with multiple blcks giving yu the ability t accurately match supply with demand and minimize the upfrnt CapEx. Integrated: The Nutanix platfrm prvides full supprt fr VAAI, VCAI, and View Cmpser integratin allwing yu t leverage all the latest advancements frm VMware and taking yur VDI slutin t the next level. Blazing fast perfrmance: Up t 25,000 randm IOPS and up t 2,000 MB/s f sequential thrughput in a cmpact 2U 4-nde cluster. Change management: Maintain envirnmental cntrl and separatin between develpment, test, staging, and prductin envirnments. Snapshts and fast clnes can help in sharing prductin data with nn-prductin jbs, withut requiring full cpies and unnecessary data duplicatin. Business cntinuity and data prtectin: Yur user desktps are missin critical and need enterprise-grade data management features including backup and DR. With Nutanix these are already prvided ut f the bx and can be managed the same as they wuld be fr virtual envirnments. Data efficiency: The Nutanix slutin is truly VM-centric fr all cmpressin plicies. Cntrary t traditinal slutins which perfrm cmpressin mainly at the LUN level, the Nutanix slutin prvides all f these capabilities at the VM and file level, greatly increasing efficiency and simplicity. These capabilities allw yu t ensure get the highest pssible cmpressin/decmpressin perfrmance n a sub-blck level. 13 4. Slutin Design With the VMware View n Nutanix slutin yu have the flexibility t start small with a single blck and scale up incrementally a nde, a blck, r multiple blcks at a time. 14 Given the ability t grw t very large scales with the Nutanix slutin, we ve chsen t design t a pd-based apprach. This apprach allws us t start extremely small and scale a nde, a blck, r multiple blcks at a time up twards a pd capacity. Once we ve filled a pd, we then begin t scale a new pd and cntinue t incrementally scale as yur envirnment grws. 17 4.2. Desktps This sectin cvers the design decisins and cnfiguratins fr the desktp use cases and cnfiguratin. Desktp Sizing 1 The fllwing are examples f sme typical scenaris fr desktp deplyment and utilizatin. Table 4: Desktp Scenari Definitin Scenari Kisk Users Task Wrkers Knwledge Wrkers Pwer Users Definitin These users need t share a desktp that is lcated in a public place. Examples f kisk users include students using a shared cmputer in a classrm, nurses at nursing statins, and cmputers used fr jb placement and recruiting. These desktps require autmatic lgin. Authenticatin can be dne thrugh certain applicatins if necessary. Task wrkers and administrative wrkers perfrm repetitive tasks within a small set f applicatins, usually at a statinary cmputer. The applicatins are usually nt as CPU- and memry-intensive as the applicatins used by knwledge wrkers. Task wrkers wh wrk specific shifts might all lg in t their virtual desktps at the same time. Task wrkers include call center analysts, retail emplyees, and warehuse wrkers. Knwledge wrkers daily tasks include accessing the Internet, using , and creating cmplex dcuments, presentatins, and spreadsheets. Knwledge wrkers include accuntants, sales managers, and marketing research analysts. Pwer users include applicatin develpers and peple wh use graphics-intensive applicatins. 19 4.3. Nutanix Cmpute/Strage The Nutanix Cmplete Cluster prvides an ideal cmbinatin f bth high-perfrmance cmpute with lcalized strage with the agility t meet any demand. 20 4.4. Netwrk Designed fr true linear scaling, we leverage a Leaf Spine netwrk architecture. A Leaf Spine architecture cnsists f tw netwrk tiers: an L2 Leaf and an L3 Spine based n 40 GbE and nn-blcking switches. 29 Results The VMware View n Nutanix slutin prvides the highest density desktp deplyment ftprint with unparalleled perfrmance. Given ur n-cntrller mdel, the desktp perfrmance remains cnsistent as the number f nde / blcks scale.
