Insallaion of he USB driver If you like o display he online-charge/discharge-daa (which are available on he USB-por of he nexgeneraion II ) via Schulze-Sof as well as insalling a firmware updae hen you have o insall he USB driver on your PC firs (available on our Homepage in secion C - schulze-nex-ii.inf)... Windows operaing sysems iniially ask he user a he momen when you have conneced he USB-por of a charger (or USB-adaper) wih he USB-slo on your compuer where o find he fiing driver (for he nexgeneraion II i is he schulze-nex-ii.inf file). Se he desired file-pah o he downloaded file. If you have abored he hardware insallaion assisan you can sar i again by a righ-click on MyCompuer ( Arbeisplaz in german) -> Properies, -> Hardware, -> Device Manager, -> Oher devices, -> Schulze nexgeneraionii hen righ click on -> updae driver and sar again (or similar ex). I is no necessary ha he charger is conneced o any power supply - i is powered via he USB-cable... When he driver is successfully insalled and ha you will be able o receive and sore baery daa wih a normal erminal program or an elder version of he Schulze-Sof - hen you have o look on which COM por he operaing sysem has insalled your USB-device (see chaper..). The laes Schulze-Sof offers in he connecion -> propery -> connec wih menu very comforable o make a selecion on "Schulze nexgeneraionii", so ha i is no necessary o perform chaper..... On Windows XP you can esablish he number of he COM por occupied by he driver by righclicking on he workplace symbol of your PC; click or double-click on Properies, Hardware, Device Manager, Pors (COM and PT). You will find a COM por wih he name "Schulze nexgeneraionii". Windows normally insalls he device on COM or higher. Imporan noe: This connecion is only displayed when he charger or our USB-adaper is conneced o he USB por of he PC! Also imporan: If you use more han one nexgeneraionii hen he driver will insall for each nexgeneraionii charger an addiional USB por number. PS: These proceedings are no specific for he Schulze-Sof or any conneced charger, bu is specific for insalling a driver on he Windows operaing sysem.. Seing he COM por in he Schulze-Sof analysis program... Open Schulze-Sof. Open he pull-down menu eniled Connecion, hen click on Properies. Selec he por idenified under secion.. /.., hen click on OK... Checking he funcion of he COM inerface (in he Schulze-Sof analysis program). Click on Info, hen on Online Info. An informaion window opens, displaying he communicaion beween he charger and he PC. Now connec he charger o he power supply, or if you have already done ha connec a baery o he charger. The inerface daa appears in he Online Daa window menioned above.. Firmware updae When his es (secion..) was successful hen you also can upgrade he firmware via his USB-ink. Click on Tools and hen FirmwareUpdae. Bu firs you have o selec he fiing file ype for he nexgeneraion II (file ending.nx). Follow he on he updae-screens. Noe: Conrary o chaper.. i is no(!) allowed wih he firmware updae ha he charger is conneced o any power supply - i mus be exclusively powered via he USB-cable.

The nexconn-ii module can very easily be insalled if required. Noe: Opposie figures similar. 0. Opening he case Undo he six cross-poin screws ( ) and remove he boom case secion. 0. Insalling he nexconn-ii module and he side panel inser.. Remove he side panel () and replace i wih he new, perforaed panel. You may find ha he side panel comes away ogeher wih he boom case secion. 0.. ocae he en holes in he smooh underside of he nexconn-ii module (9) and posiion hem direcly over he en connecor pins () mouned on he large base circui board. Don use force! The nexconn-ii module will auomaically (!) fall ino place on he base circui board if correcly posiioned. Check ha he wo nylon screws engage in he corresponding holes in he base circui board. 0. Pressing he nexconn-ii module ino place Press he nexconn module down genly as far as i will go, o ensure ha he connecors make good conac. The ips of he connecor pins () mus be exposed a he op of he en-pin socke (0). 0. We are convinced ha he charger ses new sandards for baery charging echnology. The nexgeneraionii requires no mainenance, bu needs o be proeced agains dus and moisure. Openings in he housing are essenial for cooling and mus no be blocked! The nexgeneraionii provides bes operaing comfor and maximum reliabiliy. Using he paened auomaic charging opion for Ni-Cd and Ni-MH baeries, you will noice ha he microprocessor inside will charge you baeries as fas as possible, ye as carefully as necessary (don' be worried abou he relaively high sar curren of he Ni-MH curren calculaion auomaic). Addiionally you can discharge your baeries, measure heir capaciy and condiion hem. Same opions are available for all ypes of baeries so ha also combinaion programs (charge, discharge or discharge, charge - up o imes) for all baery ypes are available. Boh oupus may be in use a he same ime and independen from each oher - when hey are no inernally conneced in parallel (only possible on nex-.xxx). The graphical CD (iquid-crysal-display) panel provides a visual represenaion of he charge volage curve relaive o ime, in addiion o he display of charge daa in alpha-numeric form. The uni also enables you o ransfer he charge daa on-line o a home compuer, where i can be displayed and analysed using he Akkusof sofware, wrien by Marin Adler. In order o make full use of your new charger we srongly recommend you o read he Insrucion Manual page by page and ake noe of he hins. Please remember ha fas-charging baeries can push he baeries o heir limi; never operae he chargers unaended. The charger as well as he baeries may ge warm; when in use, hey should be placed on an appropriaely sized, non-hea-conducing and non-combusible surface. By following hese rules exensive damage will be avoided in case of a mishap. This applies in he same way also for he aached baeries. Many modern ransmiers are equipped wih an inernal reverse-volage proecion diode. No smar charger can fas-charge hese ransmiers unless his diode is bypassed (shuned) (see chaper for addiional informaion when charging ransmiers). Preferably, you can remove he ransmier s baery and fas-charge i ouside he ransmier. If you wan o bypass he diode, conac he ransmier manufacurer. In many cases he fas-charge curren for a ransmier pack should no exceed. Amp (see operaing of ransmier). => In order o keep possible damages small in he case of an error, we recommend srongly o remove he baeries from he ransmier! RISK OF SHORT CIRCUIT! When a baery is plugged in o a balancing adaper (accessory) hen he corresponding pins of he remaining connecors are also carrying volage. Therefore i is neiher allowed o shor pins nor connec a second pack o hem! Do no cross-connec individual oupu charge cables. Do no shor circui oupu o oupu. Each charger oule has is own sensing circuiry - bu no cross-sensing. Place he charger on a safe suppor, do no hang i somewhere under he hood. Use a separae, fully charged, dedicaed -V baery (wih he nex--0 also a s ifepo wih > Ah baery is recommended) and ake i o he fligh line. Do NOT operae he charger in he case ha any of he cables are damaged or frayed, or in case he display panel indicaes an ERROR. The nexgeneraionii charging devices operaes on a wide range of inpu voage bu may also be conneced direcly o a V car baery! Do no run your car engine or aemp o charge your car baery wih exernal equipmen while operaing he charger or as long as he charger is hooked up o your car's baery. Should you decide o operae he charger from a (0V/0V AC/DC) power supply, make sure his power supply is well regulaed, can supply coninuous DC curren as high as necessary for he ype of charger, has a very high oupu capaciance (which ofen he power supplies for laboraories do NOT have), very low ripple and is insensiive o he frequency of he charger s inernal swiching volage converer. Using any oher source is likely o damage your charger or your baeries, and voids he warrany. NEVER use an auomoive baery charger (even when i is clamped o a car baery o charge i)as he source for he precision-engineered schulze charger because of i's unsabilized oupu. You are on he safe side when you use OUR power supplies (ha fis your charger) and you connec only ONE charger o i:nex-...-0: n-a; nex--0: n-0a; nex--0: n-0v-0a. When a nexgeneraionii is conneced o an AC/DC power supply/dc-generaor/solar power/conducorrail (e.g. in a club home) and/or more han one charger is powered by hese power supplies, he charger mus be de-coupled o his power supply and buffered by a buffer baery or capacior bank of abou µf (consising of many individual capaciors wih low inernal resisance for swiching power supplies, low-esr) o avoid ineracion beween differen chargers. The nexgeneraionii mus be conneced direcly o ha de-coupled buffer - oherwise here is no effec of he buffer. In paricular, we warn especially agains he simulaneous operaion of such chargers which ac on he power supply wih srong pulses and endanger oher chargers! Ask us! You should expec malfuncions and/or damages o he nexgeneraionii when you modify he charger s car baery power cables or he enclosed connecing clamps and/or when you inser fuses and or plug he charger ino he car s cigaree ligher and/or use an unsuied power supply and/or le he warnings above unnoiced! Because of he high charge curren capabiliies of hese chargers, you should always use high-qualiy, gold-plaed connecors in he charge cables o your baeries. Also, use heavy-duy (-g) flex wire. We recommend you o use eiher Schulze shor circui proeced charging cables and/or (in he USA) mm

Always connec he banana plugs of your charge cables firs; hen, connec he charge cable o he baery. Noe ha open banana plugs, when he charge cable and baery are conneced, carry he full baery volage (and curren) if you do no use he special Schulze charging cables. Avoid shor circuis of he charge oupus or he baeries wih he car body - he nexgeneraionii is no proeced agains wrong connecions like he above menioned. Place he charger bes on he ground. Noe ha all chargers have venilaion holes. Especially in discharge mode or when charging baeries less han V, he charger will dissipae energy, and ges warm (he nexgeneraionii even has an inernal cooling fan). Do no block hese venilaion holes and make sure you allow free air flow. Proec he charger from direc exposure o he sun (he sun s hea may emporarily urn he C-display black), dus, moisure and rain(!). Even hough he schulze chargers are smar (hey are micro-processor equipped and can deermine a baery s number of cells and is opimum charge curren paern), aemping o charge he following packs should no be aemped: baeries buil up from cells of differen ypes and capaciies baeries made from differen ypes of single cells baeries wih a differen charging level of he cells non rechargeable cells (dry cells) baeries which are no expressly designed for fas charging and recharging. defecive or damaged packs or cells already fully charged and/or ho baeries baery packs wih inernal charge-curren limiing devices (no valid for Schulze ipotx und iporx) baeries which are build-in (inernal) o oher equipmen Do no exceed a baery s design (maximum) charge curren as specified by is manufacurer; noe ha he schulze chargers will sill opimally charge hese Nickel-packs in auomaic charging mode; you can program he charger s max (limi) charge curren. Please bear in mind ha new rechargeable baeries do no achieve heir full capaciy unil hey have compleed several charge / discharge cycles. New baeries generally, and deep-discharged Nickel baeries in paricular, may cause premaure charge erminaion. For his reason i is absoluely essenial o check ha he auomaic charge cu-off circui works correcly and reliably; his is achieved by carrying ou several es-charges, and checking he quaniy of capaciy charged ino he pack. When charging baery packs wih less han Ni-cells, exercise exra care o make sure ha hese are no overcharged (especially when you use less han he specified curren for his baery ype - see chaper ). Nickel packs which are (oo) deeply discharged may cause he charger o cu off oo soon. New baeries will only achieve heir maximum capaciy afer several charge/discharge cycles; schulze chargers can be programmed o provide hese cycles auomaically. Please remember ha baery packs can hea up considerably especially during muliple charge/discharge cycles; program your charger s max discharge curren o preven overheaing of he packs unless you provide addiional cooling (some of he racing pilos use a ube wih elecric fan cooling!). Noe ha packs wih low capaciy will dangerously overhea a high discharge currens; he schulze charger can (and) should in his case be programmed o he limi discharge rae o a more accepable level, for insance C and/or a baery cooler in combinaion wih he emperaure sensor for cu-off mus be used. You can also use our build in low-emperaure-sar circui. (Do no forge o acivae emperaure sensor o he righ pack oupu and fix i a he righ baery.) Safey hin: Always verify he charge amoun which your baery has absorbed (mah or Ah) afer a full charge (his is indicaed on he display panel); his is probably he bes gauge of a baery s healh and/or he proper operaion of he charger. This way, you will avoid unexpeced loss of power and/or conrol. An addiional imporan funcion is he selecion of he auomaic cu-off circui. Read he imporan commens in Chaper ). Maximum proecion agains malfuncions of he cu-off auomaic is provided by selecing addiional cu-off crierias like max. emperaure, max. energy inpu and max. charge ime. For rouble-free operaion, please check ha he ferrie ring in he charge lead does no fracure. The ring prevens he charge lead acing as an aerial, i.e. radiaing he pulsed frequency of he volage converer and he processor in an unaccepable way. I is absoluely essenial if he charger is o operae in he manner required for CE approval. ha he charge leads used for he Baery and oupus are as shor as possible. The maximum oal cable lengh - from he sockes o he baery - should be no longer han 0 cm. Twis he wires ogeher o help suppress inerference. ha he charge lead for charge oupu is wound hrough one of he ferrie CE rings a leas four imes. These rings are probably familiar o you from long servo exension leads, albei in a differen size. The ring mus be locaed no more han cm from he plugs which are aached o he chargers end of he charge lead.. Sandard Balancing Adapers We offer a selecion of prined circui adaper boards which allow he balancing of s-s (...s) baery packs which are equipped wih he mos differen balancing connecors. The balancing adaper boards are fied wih a cable conaining an pin EH socke - suied for he EH connecor of he nexgen.ii... BalAd-Se for baery and/or baery Se conaining adaper PCBs wih differen plug sysems (EH, XH, PQ, TP) and each wih differen pin couns o connec s... s baery packs... The charger conains wo balancer connecors which could be used direcly (wihou any adaper). Each balancing connecor is equipped wih a -pin EH-connecor (male, whie), on which on principle can be conneced baery packs up o s - when hey are plugged in lef jusified(!). This means ha wo s-s baeries can be charged and balanced independenly from each oher a he same ime. Pracically you should use separae balancing adapers for each cell ypes wih a collecion of connecors for each cell coun (see below). When you connec a baery pack wih wo balancing connecors or cells or more hen boh balancing groups are working auomaically for oupu. In his way up o ipo cells in only one pack can be balanced. The charge oupu can furher be used regardless of charge oupu if i was no coupled o charge oupu. Only he second balancing group is in his case no longer available for oupu.. Beween boh EH plugs a -pin socke is locaed for he Schulze adaper boards BalAd-SE- - or BalAd-SEx. These boards are assembled wih Schulze BalCab male connecors and in addiion o i equipped wih wo EH connecors for he simple reason ha he board covers he wo connecors on he charger's main board below. Please place he adaper board compleely and horizonally so ha he board ress fully upon he chargers plasic case. Noe: Do never plug he balancing connecors of differen baery packs o hose connecors which are elecrically joined in parallel. These hereby are causing shor circuis and i can happen ha he conneced baery pack will be damaged. Also he copper leads on he PCB could explode. Danger of shor circuis! Open pins of he elecrically joined connecors lead volage when o one of he connecors a balancing cable is conneced!. The chemical composiion of he baeries deermines he level of his volage. Below his volage he baery eners he deep discharge zone. Individual cells wihin he pack may become reverse-polarised in his condiion, and his can cause permanen damage. Memory effec: The real memory effec has been recorded by Nasa, caused by repeaed charge / discharge cycles. Nasa has found ha full capaciy can be regained by overcharging he cells. In modelling applicaions differen effecs are responsible for he reducion in cell capaciy. The problem can be cured by balancing he cells (see below), and prevened by he measures described in Chaper... Baery condiioning: a mehod of regaining full (nominal) capaciy by alernaely charging and discharging he pack, someimes several imes. This process is especially useful afer a long period of non-usage (e.g. afer purchase, or afer several weeks wihou flying), and is also used o disperse he memory effec (see below). The effec of baery condiioning is o break down he coarse crysaline srucure (low capaciy) inside he cell and conver i ino a fine crysaline one (high capaciy). Power-On (- rese): he saus of he nexgeneraionii afer i has been conneced o he car baery. Ready message: charger ready o run he program you jus have seleced (baeries no conneced). The display shows "ready". C: Coulomb or capaciy: Uni of measuremen relaing o he quaniy of charged energy. General informaion Do no charge below 0 C, opimum is C. A cold cell is no capable of acceping as much curren as a warm one. For his reason you mus expec differences in charge characerisics if you use fully auomaic charge curren calculaion for your nickel cells (in Winer he charging properies will be worse han in Summer). The bes working emperaure for a Ni-MH cell is C. A lower emperaures he cell can no supply higher currens. Cauion when using hose cells a a receiver baery in a helicoper in he winerime. The lower he inernal resisance of he baery, he higher he charger can increase he charge curren for ha baery. For a baery charger which ses he curren auomaically he resisance of he cable is added o he inernal resisance. For his reason: use heavy duy wire (large cross-secion), even for receiver baeries, and keep hem shor. Do no charge via a swich or swich harness! If you wish o measure he maximum baery capaciy a suiable discharge curren is usually /0 C... Reflex charging Charging processes which include a brief discharge pulse definiely have he effec ha he baery is several degrees cooler a he end of he process. However, from he poin of view of he compeiion operaor his is an undesirable effec, as he cell chemisry can only supply high currens if is emperaure is raised o a cerain exen. All hese effecs, wheher hey acually occur or are simply hear-say, have no pracical significance if baeries are correcly handled in he firs place. When a baery is full, you can fill i any fuller! Read also chaper.. for his subjec area... Memory effec of Ni-Cd & Ni-MH cells If cells are repeaedly sored parially discharged, or are recharged from a half-discharged sae, wha is known as he memory effec ses in. The cells noe ha heir full capaciy is no required, and reac by refusing o make i available. One aspec of his is ha he crysalline chemical srucure inside he cell changes; he cell s resisance rises and is volage collapses under load, wih he resul ha full capaciy can no longer be exploied a normal discharge currens. Even if reflex charging were o eliminae he memory effec, here is no denying he necessiy o sore your cells in he discharged sae; his applies o Ni-Cd cells and also o Ni-MH cells. A characerisic fac of hese cells is ha hey self-discharge - and he rae of self-discharge is differen for each individual cell in a baery pack! If a fully charged pack is lef for a considerable ime, i will evenually consis of cells of widely varying saes of charge. If a his poin you... a)... give he pack a full charge: he cell wih he highes charge will be overcharged, hea up and be ruined, while he cell wih he leas charge will sill no be full afer he same period of charging. b)... discharge he pack: he cell wih he leas charge will be compleely fla firs, hen reverse polariy and ofen suffer an inernal shor-circui. A he poin when his happens, he cell wih he mos charge is sill no ye compleely discharged. This is a reliable mehod of wrecking your mos valuable packs - and res assured ha reflex charging will make absoluely no difference. However, here is one mehod of avoiding he problem: discharge cells afer use, and recharge hem jus before use! Remedy: Discharge wih a 0 Ohm resisor in series o a A diode (N00). For receiver baeries special ypes such as he Sanyo KR00AAEC / N00AC (high reliable) are a good choice. Warning: If using reduced charge curren wih - cells makes he volage peak in he charge curve very sligh, especially wih baeries of high nominal capaciy. Because of is high inernal resisance do no charge high capaciy cells of mignon(aa)-size from 00 mah upward wih auomaic curren calculaion (AuoC, -CD, -DC). If you charge a Nickel baery and he auomaically se charge curren remains below C (C = nominal baery capaciy), his generally means ha he cells are no - or are no longer - capable of being fas-charged (e.g. high-capaciy Ni-MH baeries of AA or AAA cell size). If he pack has a low cell-coun, hese low charge currens will presen problems when he auomaic cu-off circui aemps o deec he baery full sae, as he volage peak which develops is no sufficienly pronounced. In his case he only recourse is o charge he pack wih a manually se curren, or - even beer - change o a more suiable baery ype; assuming, ha here is no problem wih he charge lead.
