6 OVERVIEW With database servers and ther Tier 1 applicatins being virtualized, rganizatins need t ensure data recverability t any pint in time, minimizing impact n end users and supprting cntinuus business peratin. Thus, backup and recvery strategies fr highly transactinal applicatins are f greater imprtance. Veeam Backup & Replicatin ffers yu flexible ptins fr backup and several appraches fr restre f yur virtualized SQL Servers and databases, including ppular full restre f SQL Server virtual machine, file-level restre, and database restre using Veeam Explrer fr Micrsft SQL Server. This dcument will describe the latter apprach; t read abut tw thers, refer t the Veeam Backup & Replicatin dcumentatin at This dcument is intended fr backup administratrs and ther IT prfessinals invlved in setting up SQL Server database backup and restre with Veeam slutin. Nte: SQL applicatin items restre using U-AIR Micrsft SQL Recvery Wizard, described in the crrespnding User Guide ( T prperly cnfigure a backup jb that will create a transactinally-cnsistent backup and allw fr future restre f yur SQL Server databases, yu shuld understand hw the backup prcesses implemented by Veeam wrk. Veeam Backup & Replicatin creates a backup f the whle SQL Server, including all SQL Server instances and DBs, which can be full, incremental r reverse incremental backup (depending n the selected backup methd). As fr native SQL means, they perfrm backup per database, creating full and differential backups. Remember that these native SQL backup types d nt crrespnd t Veeam backup methds in any way. In this cntext, cnsider that Veeam Backup & Replicatin will d the fllwing during applicatin-aware image-level backup creatin: 1. Create an image-level backup f yur SQL Server VM, including all hsted instances and databases and their related settings, and stre it t backup repsitry in Veeam s prprietary frmat:.vbk (full VM backup),.vib (incremental), r.vrb (reversed incremental). 2. If transactin lg handling ptin was selected, then Veeam Backup & Replicatin will btain transactin lg backup files (.BAK) created by native means and use Veeam lg shipping server t stre them t the lcatin where VM backup is kept. Analyze hw yur backup infrastructure is rganized and identify the lcatins f Veeam backup server, backup repsitry and prductin VMs. This will help yu t decide n preferable machine fr munt peratin. Fr munt peratins, Veeam Explrer utilizes the crrespnding service (Veeam Munt Service) that can run n Veeam backup server r n Veeam standalne cnsle - bth f them include Veeam Explrer in their setup. S, Veeam backup cnsle can wrk as a munt server in the remte site, eliminating the need t deply additinal Veeam backup server in that site and minimizing traffic at restre. Cnsider the fllwing recmmendatins: If repsitry and prductin (target) SQL Server VM are lcated in the same site with Veeam backup server, Veeam Explrer will utilize Munt Service running n Veeam backup server fr munt peratin. If repsitry and prductin (target) SQL Server VM are lcated in a remte site (separately frm Veeam backup server), it can be reasnable t deply Veeam Backup & Replicatin cnsle in that remte site, and launch Veeam Explrer frm that cnsle, initiating munt peratin lcally in the site where cnsle is running. Nte: If yu plan t restre database items frm an SQL Server VM running Micrsft Windws ReFS, cnsider that Veeam backup server r management cnsle (that is, the machine where Veeam Explrer and the munt service are running) must be installed n the Micrsft Windws Server 2012 r later. 10 With simple recvery mdel specified fr yur database, yu will be able t restre it nly t the selected restre pint; SQL Server will autmatically truncate lgs, and Veeam backup cnfiguratin will nt affect any f them. With ther mdels (full and bulk-lgged), database transactin lgs will nt be truncated autmatically by SQL Server, and Veeam ffers different prcessing ptins fr them. 11 Decide n Backup and Recvery Tl Yu shuld als find ut what tls are used t backup SQL Server VM hsting yur database(s) and their transactin lgs in yur rganizatin infrastructure. Using Veeam If yu plan t use Veeam Backup & Replicatin fr bth image-level backup f SQL Server VM and database transactin lg backup, then yu will need t select the crrespnding ptin (Prcess transactin lgs with this jb) when cnfiguring VM prcessing settings in backup jb. Jb cnfiguratin will be discussed later in mre details. This ptin allws yu t set and frget an autmated wrkflw fr creating all the backups required fr SQL Server database recvery using Veeam Backup & Replicatin. Thus, data can be quickly and easily recvered, fllwing the scenari f yur chice with Veeam tls. With this ptin selected, yu can cnfigure SQL database lg backup settings n the SQL tab, which becmes available t yu. 12 Using 3rd Party Tl Fr large SQL Server deplyments, frequent full database backups are nt always acceptable since these peratins wuld be very much time- and resurce-taking. Fr this reasn, rganizatins prefer t create full and differential database backups peridically, backing up transactin lgs quite frequently. Therefre, t prvide fr prper restre, database administratrs need t ensure they have the mst recent full/differential backup and the assciated sequence f transactin lg backups at hand. When Veeam creates an image-level backup f SQL Server VM, using applicatin-aware prcessing withut special settings (that is, withut COPY_ONLY flag), this is always treated by SQL as a full database backup. Nte: Per Micrsft recmmendatin, starting with Veeam Backup & Replicatin 9.0, a Veeam backup jb registers a SQL Server database backup by adding the crrespnding recrd in the system.db system table f each SQL Server database. This feature is knwn as database labeling. As a result, this full backup becmes a new base fr the differential backups that fllw, jepardizing the sequence (see this illustrated article). Thus, if yu plan t preserve the chain f full and differential database backups (created by native means r by 3rd party backup tl) but yu als want Veeam t back up yur SQL Server VM, it is recmmended that yu trigger the COPY_ONLY flag fr Veeam. Fr that, select the Perfrm cpy nly ptin. This ptin indicates that a chain f database backups and transactin lgs is created by native means r by 3rd party tl, and instructs Veeam t keep this sequence untuched. Fr that, Veeam will back up the specified SQL Server VM using the COPY_ONLY ptin fr snapsht creatin. Transactin lgs 12 Hw t Backup & Restre SQL Server Databases with Veeam Versin 9.5 REV 1

13 will nt be affected in any way, s yur database administratr can handle them with native r 3rd party tls. Nte: With the Perfrm cpy nly ptin selected, the SQL and Oracle tabs intended fr lg handling settings will be hidden, with their parameters unavailable t user. The COPY_ONLY methd als allws Veeam t supprt Always-On Availability Grups, creating backups f passive replicas. Fr detailed descriptin f SQL Server backup chain, yu can read the article by Michael K. 14 Understand the Prcesses T create an applicatin-aware backup f the SQL Server VM that enables yu t restre the databases t the certain pint in time r t specific transactin, yu shuld set up a backup jb with special applicatin prcessing ptins, and enable SQL database transactin lg handling. This sectin explains hw such a jb wrks, and prvides recmmendatins n its cnfiguratin. Nte: These explanatins refer nly t the case when transactin lg backup is turned ON fr SQL Server VM backup jb; therwise, applicatin-specific ptins will be unavailable. In This Sectin Hw It Wrks: SQL Server and Transactin Lg Backup Hw It Wrks: SQL Server Database Restre Hw It Wrks: Munt Operatins Hw It Wrks: SQL Server and Transactin Lg Backup If yu plan t set up the SQL Server backup jb t back up transactin lgs, cnsider that it will cmprise 2 jbs: 1. SQL Server image-level VM backup jb ( parent ) named <jb_name>, fr example, Test Jb. This is the jb yu cnfigure explicitly in the management cnsle; its sessin starts n schedule r is started manually by user. 2. Transactin lg backup jb ( child ) named with suffix: <jb_name> SQL Backup, fr example, Test Jb SQL Backup. This jb is created by Jb Manager if it detects that parent (VM backup) jb is scheduled t back up at least ne SQL Server with applicatin-aware image prcessing switched n and transactin lg backup enabled. Transactin lg backup jb ( child ) is triggered by VM backup ( parent ) this sequence ensures that VM (and database) restre pint will be present when it cmes t lg replay. Child jb runs permanently in backgrund, with the specified frequency f lg shipping t repsitry. Its sessin data is kept in the Veeam Backup & Replicatin database and is displayed in the Veeam backup management cnsle. 15 Stages 1 and 2 When scheduled, Jb Manager (Veeam cmpnent wrking n Veeam backup server) launches parent jb that creates an image-level backup f SQL Server VM and stres it t backup repsitry. Stage 3 A new child jb sessin starts, and Veeam Backup & Replicatin installs a runtime cmpnent Veeam Lg Shipper Service t the VM guest OS in rder t supprt guest prcessing and lg handing. This service runs during the child jb sessin and cllects infrmatin abut databases whse lgs shuld be prcessed. The service als detects whether it is pssible t stre lgs int the repsitry thrugh direct access, r using a lg shipping server. When child jb sessin ends, the service is stpped and remved frm guest. Then a new sessin starts, and the service is installed again. Transactin lg backup is perfrmed by SQL Server; this peratin als includes lg truncatin s that the space can be reused. These lg backups are stred as.bak files in a temprary flder in the SQL Server VM guest file system. Nte: Default lcatin f the temprary flder is %allusersprfile%\veeam\backup. If it is necessary t use anther lcatin, yu can specify it in the SqlTempLgPath (STRING) registry value that yu can create under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replicatin registry key n yur SQL Server VM (yu may need t restart the Lg shipper service n that VM fr the change t take effect). Stage 4 Every 15 minutes (default frequency) Jb Manager cmpnent detects what databases currently exist n SQL Server, and maps this data with VM backup infrmatin kept in Veeam Backup & Replicatin database. This peridic mapping reveals the databases fr which Veeam Backup & Replicatin must ship transactin lgs t repsitry during this 15-min interval. If there are any lgs that fr sme reasns were nt shipped t backup repsitry by Veeam during the previus interval(s), they will be als included in the prcessing list. 16 Stage 5 Transactin lg backup files (.BAK) are transferred frm temprary lcatin n SQL Server t the target lcatin in backup repsitry, either directly r via a lg shipping server. Surce-side Veeam transprt service cmpresses lg data t be transferred accrding t its built-in settings. On the repsitry side, data is cmpressed accrding t parent jb settings (see the "Data Cmpressin and Deduplicatin" sectin f the User Guide fr details). As sn as data is cpied t the target, transactin lg backup files are deleted frm the temprary flder n SQL Server. Nte: Transactin lgs that fr sme reasn were nt prcessed during lg backup interval remain in that temprary flder and are prcessed during the next lg backup interval (see Stage 4). The figure belw depicts in detail what ges n within a lg backup interval fr each SQL Server VM in the jb (that has lg backup ptin enabled). Lg Backup Sessins A sequence f the 15-min (r custm) intervals between the runs f parent jb cmprises a lg backup ( child jb) sessin. Initial sessin starts at the mment when parent jb (image-level backup) schedule was enabled, then sessin starts with each start f the parent jb. Lg backup ( child jb) cntinues wrking until the next start f the VM image-level backup ( parent ). At this pint, child jb stps and then starts a new sessin, perfrming steps 1-5. Sessin ends just befre the next run f the parent jb, and/r when this parent jb is disabled (using the menu cmmand r by mdifying jb schedule). 16 Hw t Backup & Restre SQL Server Databases with Veeam Versin 9.5 REV 1

17 Assume that VM image-level backup jb was cnfigured t run daily at 11:00 PM, starting n May, 5. The figure abve illustrates the fllwing curse f actin: 1. Initial child jb sessin starts as sn as parent jb schedule is enabled (n backups yet) this happens at 7:00 PM n May, 5. The child jb remains in the Idle state, waiting fr an image-level backup t arrive. 2. At 11:00 PM n May, 5 parent jb runs n schedule, creating an image-level backup f SQL Server VM. 3. Child jb state is nw Wrking, and a sequence f lg backup intervals fllws. If all lg backups are successfully transferred t backup repsitry befre the mment when a new sessin must start, the jb will g int the Idle state and wait fr remaining lg backup interval(s) t expire. 4. At 11:00 PM n May, 6 next run f the parent jb takes place, and new child jb sessin starts. Transactin lg backup requires that at least ne image-level backup f SQL Server VM is perfrmed, s remember that: Transactin lgs fr newly appearing databases will be backed up nly after the image-level backup f the crrespnding SQL Server is perfrmed. If a new lg backup ( child ) jb sessin starts when n restre pint has been yet created by image-level backup ( parent ) jb, and there are n previus lgs t prcess, child jb will remain in the idle state, waiting fr a new restre pint t arrive. Transactin lg backup will nt take place after full SQL Server VM restre. Backup Files and Retentin Backup Files In the backup repsitry, lgs are stred as.vlb files (Veeam prprietary frmat) c-lcated with crrespnding SQL Server VM backups (.VBK/.VIB/.VRB files) in the repsitry flder (default is C:\backup\<SQL_server_VM_backup_jb_name>). The backup chain metadata file is als stred in that flder as the.vbm file. At each start f the SQL Server backup jb ('parent'), a new.vlb is created t stre lg backups in the repsitry: If the Use per-vm backup files ptin is selected fr the repsitry, then Veeam will create a separate.vlb fr each server prcessed by the jb. If this ptin is cleared, then a single.vlb will be created fr all servers prcessed by the jb. Fr example, if a jb prcesses nly ne SQL Server, the repsitry will cntain a number f.vlb files fr it (a s-called chain). As described in the sectin abve, during database lg backup ('child') jb sessin, transactin lg backup is perfrmed by native means f the SQL Server and stred as.bak file t a temprary flder n the SQL Server VM guest file system. Then Veeam cpies.bak file t the current.vlb in the repsitry. When the new 'parent' jb sessin starts, anther.vlb is created, and the.bak files that appear after that will be stred there during the 'child' jb sessin. 18 Ttal number f all LOG<N>.BAK files stred at the mment in all VLBs is reprted as a number f restre pints fr the 'child' jb that backs up database lgs. S, in the example abve, the lg backup jb fr SQL Server VM1 has created 8 restre pints by the mment. 19 Retentin By default, lg backups retentin plicy is set t keep the number f restre pints in accrdance with the crrespnding image-level backup f SQL Server VM. This allws yu t have bth image-level backup and all the necessary lg backups at hand when yu need t restre yur database frm VM backup t a desired state database will be restred t the clsest pint befre selected mment, and transactin lg replay will then bring it t the desired state. When a database restre pint is remved due t VM backup retentin settings, the crrespnding chain f lg backups is remved, t. Anther ptin allws yu t keep nly last <N> days. This retentin setting can be used, fr example, if yu plan t save n strage space, saving lg backups fr the last few days t be able t restre t sme recent database state. Imprtant! They are based n Veeam s patented vpwer technlgy that allws yu t run a VM directly frm a cmpressed and deduplicated backup file, eliminating the need t extract the backup and cpy it t prductin strage. Instead, Veeam expses the VM files in a backup repsitry thrugh a disk munt. Lcal disk space is used as a temprary write area while the VM is running frm the backup. This apprach is used t carry ut the whle VM restre with Instant VM Recvery, Full VM Restre, as well as t perfrm VM disk recvery r file-level restre f the guest OS (see Veeam Backup & Replicatin User Guide fr mre infrmatin n restre ptins). Veeam Backup & Replicatin als ffers a cnvenient tl t extend the set f restre ptins Veeam Explrer fr Micrsft SQL Server, installed tgether with Veeam Backup & Replicatin server r standalne cnsle as a part f Veeam setup. The basic restre prcedure includes the fllwing steps: 1. The backup administratr uses Veeam Backup & Replicatin restre ptins t munt database files frm the SQL Server's backup, making database hierarchy available fr brwsing and search. 2. Veeam Explrer fr Micrsft SQL Server btains SQL Server hierarchy infrmatin (instances and databases) and presents it t user, facilitating brwsing and search. A user selects and fllws the necessary database restre scenari. This service runs during the restre sessin; it checks the rights assignment required fr database restre, gets infrmatin abut databases that shuld be restred, perfrms the necessary file peratins (including database and transactin lg cpy) and s n. When restre sessin ends, the service is stpped and remved frm guest. Then a new sessin starts, and the service is installed again. The Veeam SQL Restre Service perates under the Lcal System accunt. All service activities are lgged t the Veeam.SQL.Service_<timestamp>.lg file stred in the Temp flder f the system directry, next t the Veeam.SQL.Service_<timestamp>.exe file (runtime cmpnent installed per sessin). The key cmpnent f the munt server rle is a special service respnsible fr munt functinality, named Veeam Munt Service. This munt peratin allws a user t utilize Veeam Explrer fr brwsing backup cntent and chsing the files/bjects t be restred. After a Restre cmmand is initiated (typically, t the riginal VM running in prductin envirnment), selected data will be btained frm the repsitry using ne mre munt peratin and transferred t target. This helps t decrease traffic between this repsitry and target VM and speed up recvery in distributed infrastructure. If a user perfrms applicatin item restre via Enterprise Manager, and VM backup was created with guest indexing enabled, then just ne munt peratin will be perfrmed, and the same munt pint will be used fr bth brwsing and restre. Data will be transferred between munt server and target VM. Fr restre frm backups f Micrsft SQL Server VMs, Veeam Backup & Replicatin creates an additinal munt pint n the riginal VM, and, if necessary, n a staging Micrsft SQL Server. Munt t the staging server is used when yu perfrm restre t a specific transactin, r if Veeam Backup & Replicatin des nt have infrmatin abut databases (fr example, if yu initiate restre frm strage snapshts). If all these cmpnents are in the same site, Veeam Explrer will utilize Munt Service running n Veeam backup server fr munt peratin. If repsitry and prductin (target) SQL Server VM are lcated in a remte site (separately frm Veeam backup server), then it can be reasnable t deply Veeam Backup & Replicatin cnsle in that remte site and launch Veeam Explrer frm that cnsle, initiating munt peratin lcally in the site where cnsle is running. 5. Shuld yu maintain database restres by yurself, r will yu delegate restre rights t anther user (grup f users)? In the latter case, it is reasnable t use Enterprise Manager functinality fr delegated restres f applicatin items. T implement the necessary scenari, yu shuld, in particular, d the fllwing: 1. If yu plan t restre an encrypted database using Veeam Explrer fr Micrsft SQL Server, cnsider infrmatin prvided in this Knwledge Base article. 10. Table-level recvery is supprted nly fr database tables with n external dependencies. 11. If yu plan t restre database schema bjects, cnsider that 'Replace' lgic is nt supprted - that is, if an bject with the same name exists in the prductin database and in the backup, then a backup bject will nt replace the existing ne, but an bject with a different name will be created instead, as described in the Restring Database Schema and Data. Als, cnsider that when bjects are renamed, relatinships between them are nt renamed. 12. As fr SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2, default settings in these versins allw fr database lg truncatin by lcal SYSTEM accunt (hwever, if they were mdified, make sure this accunt is permitted t truncate lgs). Als, make sure that Deny lg n lcally and Deny lg n thrugh Terminal Services are turned OFF fr the crrespnding accunt (these can be turned n, in particular, due t grup plicy settings). 3. Then click the Applicatin buttn, select the SQL Server VM in the list f prcessed machines, and click Edit t pen its prcessing settings. 4. On the General tab, in the Applicatin sectin, select Require successful prcessing (recmmended) ptin this will instruct Veeam t stp the backup prcess if any VSS errrs ccur during applicatin quiescence. If bth Micrsft SQL Server and Oracle Server are installed n ne VM, and this VM is prcessed by a jb with lg backup enabled fr bth applicatins, Veeam Backup & Replicatin will back up nly Oracle database lgs. Micrsft SQL Server transactin lgs will nt be prcessed. Veeam Backup & Replicatin supprts the fllwing ptins: Truncate lgs (prevent lgs frm grwing frever) with this ptin selected, Veeam Backup & Replicatin runtime prcess respnsible fr crdinatin f applicatin-aware activities will wait fr the backup t cmplete, and then it will trigger truncatin f transactin lgs (using VSS). Yu can select server(s) frm the list, r instruct Veeam Backup & Replicatin t autmatically chse an ptimal lg shipping server frm the Managed Servers (that is, added t backup infrastructure in Veeam backup cnsle). The chice will be based n tw criteria: pssible data transfer methd(s) and netwrk availability. Pssible data transfer methds fr lg shipping server are: Netwrk this is a default methd which can be used fr bth platfrms. It uses the VM guest OS t btain files and then transfer them ver the netwrk. T fflad the VM guest OS, lgs are created ne by ne (nt simultaneusly); 1 lg creatin request is created fr every DB. VIX - this methd can be used fr VMware VMs nly. It allws yu t btain guest files bypassing the netwrk. Veeam Backup & Replicatin autmatically re-detect available hsts, s if a lg shipping server fails fr sme reasn, prcessing will be perfrmed by anther server. Scheduling T prevent a backup jb frm verlapping with prductin hurs and ensure it des nt prvide unwanted verhead n yur virtual envirnment, yu can schedule SQL Server VM backup t run during ff-peak hurs, r cnfigure a specific backup windw -a perid f time n week days when backup jbs are permitted t run. If the jb exceeds the allwed windw, it will be autmatically terminated. With a scheduled SQL Server VM backup jb, transactin lg backup jb runs permanently in backgrund. 36 Cnsider the fllwing when yu set up lg backup interval: Lg prcessing fr a database will nt start until the last lg fr the previusly prcessed database has been mved away frm the VM guest OS. It is recmmended t set up lg backup frequency with respect t actual time required t transfer lg data t repsitry. Otherwise, yu will be getting an errr message in the jb sessin data, and SLA misses will be als reprted in jb statistics. Fr example, if yu set up the jb t backup lgs every 5 minutes, but actually the prcess takes 15 minutes, the SLA will be missed 2 times. Yu can als use netwrk and repsitry traffic thrttling capabilities. Supprt fr AlwaysOn Availability Grups AlwaysOn Availability Grups allw yu t increase fault tlerance between active and ht-standby databases withut invlving shared physical disks, which is quite imprtant fr virtualizatin f SQL Servers. Veeam Backup & Replicatin supprts AlwaysOn Availability Grups fr virtualized SQL Server 2012 and later. Image-level Backup f SQL Server VM During image-level backup f an SQL Server VM, Veeam requests and analyzes infrmatin abut databases that are included in the AlwaysOn Availability Grups. Depending n the retrieved infrmatin, a VSS snapsht will be created with r withut COPY_ONLY flag. 37 Veeam Backup & Replicatin als detects what cluster the database belngs t. If the backup jb des nt include all VMs frm the cluster, a warning message will be issued. Retrieved infrmatin is saved fr further lg identificatin. Transactin Lg Backup Transactin lg backup can be perfrmed nly fr thse databases that were successfully backed up with the crrespnding settings, either n the primary r n the secndary nde f AlwaysOn Availability Grup. Transactin lgs prcessing interval may be the same, r may differ thrugh the VMs included in AlwaysOn Availability Grup in the latter case, Veeam Backup & Replicatin will use minimal value (default is 15 min). At each lg prcessing interval, Veeam Backup & Replicatin chses the AlwaysOn Availability Grup nde fr which transactin lgs will be backed up. Imprtant! Lgs are backed up fr the nly ne AlwaysOn Availability Grup nde selected. T becme a subject fr lg backup, the nde must meet the fllwing criteria: Required Veeam cmpnents can be installed n that nde (in particular, the VM must be running) If there are any lgs remaining in the temprary flder n that nde f AlwaysOn Availability Grup, this means they were nt backed up t the destinatin repsitry during the previus lg backup sessin, s this nde must be prcessed first. Databases in the AlwaysOn Availability Grup(s) fr that nde were successfully backed up (fr the last tw prcessing intervals). Nde shuld be available ver the netwrk (preferred data transfer methd) r via VIX (fr vsphere platfrm). The VM shuld be included in the list f preferred ndes (fr backup) retrieved frm SQL Server. If there are n preferred ndes, then any nde can be chsen. Cnsideratins and Limitatins If yu want t restre a database frm AlwaysOn availability grup nde t the state as f prir t selected transactin, all ndes f the grup shuld be lcated in the same time zne. If yu are using Basic Availability Grups n Micrsft SQL Server 2016 Standard Editin, cnsider that the secndary replica nde cannt be backed up because the secndary nde is nt readable. 39 MANAGING YOUR SQL BACKUP JOBS As explained abve, with lg backup switched n, SQL Server backup jb cmprises 2 jbs: 1. Parent jb, which perfrms image-level VM backup and is explicitly created and named by user as <jb_name>, fr example, MyTestJb. 2. Child jb, which perfrms transactin lg prcessing and is named autmatically using SQL Backup suffix: <jb_name> SQL Backup. S, fr ur example it will be MyTestJb SQL Backup. Child jb is created by Jb Manager if it detects that there is a parent jb, scheduled t backup at least ne SQL Server VM, with applicatin-aware image prcessing enabled. Parent jb sessin starts n schedule r is started manually by user; child jb (transactin lg prcessing) fllws it - t ensure that full backup is peridically created, and lg backups then will be f use t restre the VM t the required state. Child jb (transactin lg prcessing) runs permanently in backgrund with the specified interval. It can be stpped r disabled under certain cnditins. Starting, Stpping, Enabling and Disabling the Jb Starting Image-level backup jb ( parent ) can be started autmatically upn schedule r manually when yu click Start n the Veeam Backup & Replicatin tlbar. Lg backup jb ( child ) is initially started when yu enable schedule fr parent image-level backup jb, and then it wrks cntinuusly in the backgrund, with new sessin beginning each time the parent jb is started. Imprtant! Fr the child jb t run, the parent jb must be enabled and have its schedule cnfigured fr autmatic jb runs. If schedule is disabled, and yu frce image-level SQL Server backup jb start manually by clicking Start, n lg prcessing will be perfrmed fr SQL Server. Stpping/Disabling If yu need t stp transactin lg prcessing fr all VMs included in the parent jb (SQL Server VM image-level backup), select this parent jb and use the Disable cmmand frm the ribbn r shrtcut menu. Yu can als clear Run the jb autmatically check bx in the jb prperties. The Jb Manager instructs the child jb t cmplete the remaining steps f lg prcessing fr all VMs included in the parent jb, and changes the status f bth jbs t Disabled (n re-start will be perfrmed after that). T re-activate transactin lg prcessing fr all VMs in the parent jb, clear the Disable prperty fr that parent jb in its shrtcut menu, r release the Disable tl buttn n the tlbar. 42 Recnfiguring Jbs with Micrsft SQL Server VMs In sme situatins, yu may need t recnfigure a backup jb that prcesses a Micrsft SQL Server VMs and ships transactin lgs. Fr example, yu may want t create a separate backup jb t prcess the virtualized database, and delete the VM running the database frm the previusly created jb. When yu cnfigure a new jb, mind the restrictin n transactin lgs shipping. By default, the new backup jb that prcesses the VM will nt ship transactin lgs if transactin lgs fr this VM have been shipped fr the last 7 days by anther backup jb n the same backup server. T vercme this restrictin, yu can recnfigure the backup jbs. The prcedure belw is required nly if yu d nt want t delete the initial backup jb. 1. Remve the Micrsft SQL Server VM frm the initial backup jb. As an alternative, yu can disable transactin lgs shipping in the jb prperties: in the guest prcessing settings, select the D nt truncate r Perfrm cpy-nly ptin. 2. In the registry n the backup server, lcate the SqlBackupLgsAgeDaysTSkipLgBackup registry key and set its value t 0 -rdelete transactin lgs fr the Micrsft SQL Server VM frm the backup repsitry. 3. Create a new backup jb t prcess the Micrsft SQL Server VM and enable transactin lg shipping in the jb prperties. 4. It is strngly recmmended that yu delete the SqlBackupLgsAgeDaysTSkipLgBackup registry key in a week. In this case, if the VM is added t several jbs, transactin lgs will nt be shipped t different backup repsitries. Instead, Veeam Backup & Replicatin data recvery functinality is used t munt the selected restre pint (image-level backup r replica) f Micrsft SQL Server VM t the munt server, and then yu select hw yu want yur database t be restred. 1. Yu can use Veeam Explrer fr Micrsft SQL Server that supprts the fllwing scenaris: Restre database t the riginal r different lcatin, t the state as in the selected restre pint f SQL Server VM. Restre database t the selected pint in time. Restre database t the state prir t undesired transactin. Restre database schema and data t the states listed abve. Restre all databases hsted n the SQL Server r instance ('bulk restre') t the state as in the selected restre pint (backup), r t the selected mment in time. Yu can use anther SQL Server as a staging system. Imprtant! Remember that yur staging system must have the same r later versin as the riginal SQL Server. SQL Server included in Micrsft SQL Server Failver Cluster cannt be used as a staging system. Make sure the accunts yu specify have sufficient permissins t cnnect t Windws machine and t access SQL server. Cnsider that specific prts n staging server will be used during restre sessin, as described in the Check Required Prts sectin. T specify anther staging server: 1. Launch Veeam Explrer fr Micrsft SQL Server, pen main menu and click Optins. 2. Select an SQL Server instance frm the list, r click Brwse. 3. Specify user accunt that will be used t access this SQL server - this can be current accunt (the ne under which Veeam Explrer is running) r anther accunt. 4. Specify accunt that will be used t access Windws machine where that SQL server runs. Yu can als use current accunt r anther accunt. 5. 46 If yu plan t add database(s) t Veeam Explrer scpe manually, cnsider the fllwing when setting up the staging SQL Server: If this SQL Server belngs t an untrusted dmain, cnnectin will nt be pssible. If this SQL Server belngs t a trusted dmain, then nly SQL Server authenticatin is pssible. If this SQL Server belngs t the same dmain as the machine where Veeam Explrer runs, then bth Windws and SQL Server authenticatin methds are pssible. In this case, if staging SQL Server is running under lcal accunt and yu plan t use Windws authenticatin fr cnnectin, yu will need t cnfigure delegatin settings as fllws: a) In Active Directry Users and Cmputers, select the necessary staging SQL Server. b) Open its prperties and g t the Delegatin tab. Select Trust this cmputer fr delegatin t specified services nly and Use any authenticatin prtcl ptins fr the cifs service n the cmputer where Veeam Explrer runs. c) After that, restart the staging SQL Server. d) Select the dmain user accunt that yu want t use fr cnnectin t the staging SQL Server, and in its prperties n the Accunt tab make sure the Accunt is sensitive and cannt be delegated check bx is cleared. 47 Step 3: Check User Accunt Permissins Requirements fr Veeam Explrer Operatins Check the fllwing permissins and cntact yur database administratr if necessary: 1. T create an applicatin-cnsistent backup, the user accunt that yu specify fr guest prcessing f the Micrsft SQL Server VM in the backup jb shuld have the sysadmin fixed rle assigned n that SQL Server. Otherwise, n database cntent will be visible in Veeam Explrer. See als this Veeam KB article. This is the recmmended setting; hwever, if yu need t prvide minimal permissins t the accunt perfrming backup peratin, yu can assign them as recmmended in the Applicatin-Aware Prcessing sectin f this guide. 2. The accunt used t run Veeam Explrer fr Micrsft SQL Server shuld have sufficient permissins fr the flder where yu plan t exprt the database files: Read and Write are minimal recmmended. 3. The accunt yu will use t access the target Micrsft SQL Server where database will be restred needs sysadmin fixed rle n that server. This als refers t the accunt that will be used t access the staging server (if necessary). 4. The accunt yu plan t use fr cnnectin t the Windws machine (where database lg backup files will be cpied fr further lg replay) will need sufficient permissins t access the administrative share n that machine: Read and Write are minimal required. Fr restre scenaris, that machine is yur target SQL Server. Delegating Restre Rights via Enterprise Manager If yu plan t delegate rights t perfrm database restre peratins t persnnel in charge, yu shuld assign an Enterprise Manager rle t them and cnfigure rle settings accrdingly: 1. Lg in t Enterprise Manager with administrative rights, g t Cnfiguratin tab. 2. T create a rle fr restre peratr, fllw the steps described in the Cnfiguring Security Settings sectin f the Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager User Guide. 3. By default, system databases (master, mdel, msdb) are skipped frm transactin lg prcessing and are nt a part f Veeam Explrer restre wrkflw. These databases can be restred using file-level restre, as described in the Veeam Backup & Replicatin User Guide ( If yu want t exclude ther database(s) frm transactin lg prcessing wrkflw, please refer t this Veeam Knwledge Base article: (Cnsider that exclusin cnfigured this way will be treated as a glbal setting.) 3. Currently, pint-in-time restre and restre t the state befre selected transactin is nt supprted fr replica VMs and fr restre pints created by backup cpy jb. 4. If yu want t restre a database frm AlwaysOn availability grup nde t the state as f prir t selected transactin, all ndes f the grup shuld be lcated in the same time zne. 5. If yu plan t restre an encrypted database using Veeam Explrer fr Micrsft SQL Server, cnsider infrmatin prvided in this Knwledge Base article. 6. Table-level recvery is supprted nly fr database tables with n external dependencies. 7. If yu plan t restre database schema bjects, cnsider that 'Replace' lgic is nt supprted - that is, if an bject with the same name exists in the prductin database and in the backup, then a backup bject will nt replace the existing ne, but an bject with a different name will be created instead, as described in the Restring Database Schema and Data. Als, cnsider that when bjects are renamed, relatinships between them are nt renamed.
