In this curse yu will learn basic cmputer science principles thrugh the use f html and CSS and by prgramming in scripting languages (e.g., JavaScript). COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end f curse, yu shuld be able t d all f the fllwing. Create simple web pages by hand editing HTML, XHTML, CSS and JavaScript files. Identify the syntax and semantics f the mst imprtant HTML/XHTML elements. Explain the difference between HTML and XHTML. Explain varius aspects f validatin f web dcuments, including: the purpse f a DOCTYPE declaratin is at the beginning f an HTML/XHTML file the benefits f writing "valid" HTML/XHTML identifying and aviding thse cmmn validatin errrs in sample HTML/XHTML cde Use varius syntax features f the CSS language. Explain the benefits/drawbacks f using CSS in the fllwing ways: inline internal style sheets external style sheets Explain the difference between static and dynamic web pages. Explain the difference between client-side and server side dynamic cntent, and demnstrate this understanding by writing example cde fr each, including: an example f JavaScript cde t demnstrate client-side dynamic cntent (JavaScript will be a majr curse tpic) an example f PHP t demnstrate server-side dynamic cntent. (PHP will be a minr curse tpic.) Demnstrate an understanding f basic prgramming skills in JavaScript, including: writing functins using variables using cntrl structures including if/else, while lps, and fr lps. 1

2 Demnstrate an understanding f three ways f including JavaScript in a web page, namely (1) inline event handlers (2) internal script elements, (3) external script files. Demnstrate an understanding f the cncept f scpe in JavaScript, including differentiating between lcal and glbal variables. Differentiate between frmal and actual parameters Distinguish between scalar and array values, and between array values and array indices. Distinguish between methds and prperties f JavaScript bjects. Identify the significance f standards bdies such as W3C and ECMA. Distinguish between a web client and a web server Demnstrate why and hw t include cmments in HTML/XHTML,CSS and JavaScript cde. Explain what the Dcument Object Mdel is in JavaScript, and demnstrate a basic understanding f DOM relatinships such as parent and child elements thrugh JavaScript cde. Yu must have the memry drive fr the first lab. The flash memry drive is fr yu t save yur lab wrk, shuld yu nt be able t cmplete it during the scheduled lab time. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance in lecture, thugh nt taken, is expected. Yu are respnsible fr anything taught r annunced in lecture and if yu chse nt t cme, it is yur jb t find ut what is ging n withut extra help frm me. This includes class ntes! Lab attendance is required. Attendance will be taken. If yu d nt attend lab and yu run int truble, d nt expect the TA r me t put urselves ut t help yu. is the nly cnsistent methd f cmmunicatin I have with the entire class. It is imperative that yu knw that yu are receiving mail frm the class list. Anything mailed at least 24 hurs prir is cnsidered yur respnsibility t knw. 3 CLASS RULES: 1. If yu dn t attend class, dn t expect t pass this curse 2. Yur final grade cannt be mre than ne letter grader higher than yur exam average. This reflects yur mastery f the basic cncepts f the curse. 3. All labs must be remved frm University cmputers when yu leave lab r yu will lse 25% ff yur lab. 4. Any lab placed in my mailbx will nt be turned ver t yur TA and yu will receive a 0. Either give labs t yur TA r place them in yur TA s mailbx. 5. All paper assignments MUST BE STAPLED r they wn t be graded. 6. All ed assignments must include yur name r they wn t be graded. Labs meet at the scheduled days/times and lcatins. In mst cases, yu will need t cmplete the lab assignments utside f class time; yu may either cme in and use a free machine in Smith r use anther PC lab n campus that has cmpatible sftware. Mst f the cmputer labs allw yu t call in by phne and reserve a PC fr a 2-hur perid. Lab assignments: Each week yu will begin a new lab. This lab will be due at the beginning f lab sessin the fllwing week. If yu cannt make it t the lab sessin, yu can turn the lab in t the TA s mailbx prir t the lab sessin. If yu turn it in after the lab sessin, it will be cnsidered late. If yu cannt turn the lab in n time, yu are allwed t put it int the TA s mailbx by the beginning f the lecture that immediately fllws the lab s due date, but 50% will be deducted. The lab will nt be accepted any later. Penalties are based n when the assignment is TURNED IN, nt when it was run n the cmputer. 3

4 IMPORTANT - PLEASE KEEP YOUR RETURNED GRADED LABS WITH YOU UNTIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER AS A PROOF IN CASE YOUR LAB SCORES HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY RECORDED. Lab attendance is REQUIRED! A place is reserved fr yu during lab time. It is the nly time yu can be GUARANTEED access t a machine, the lab materials, the sftware and the Teaching Assistant (TA). T receive full credit fr attendance, yu must attend the lab sessin until yu have COMPLETED the lab being wrked n that day, NOT the ne that is due. If yu leave early withut turning in that day s lab, it will be cnsidered an absence. Keep yur TA infrmed abut planned absences. Send just prir t r immediately after any absence frm LAB, even if yu ve tld the TA ahead f time. This makes recrd keeping s much easier. Yu are allwed three absences frm lab and yu shuld save it fr when yu are sick yu are still required t turn in the lab assignment by the due date. Mre than 3 absences will result in autmatic failure f labs. Ntes attesting t visits t the infirmary will NOT result in an excused absence frm lab. If yu need t miss a lab and wish t have credit fr attendance, yu must cmplete the entire assignment and turn it in PRIOR t the lab in which yu wuld have been wrking n it. If yu d the lab early, yu must d it n yur wn; the TAs will nt be available t help yu. EXAMS: Attendance is MANDATORY fr all exams. If an exam is missed because f an excused absence, it cannt be taken later and it will nt be included in the cmputatin f the final grade; the ther exams will be weighted extra. If an exam is missed because f an unexcused absence, it cannt be taken later, and a scre f 0 will be included in the cmputatin f the final grade. The Final Exam is cumulative. Final Exam Schedules are nt knwn until halfway int the curse. D nt plan t leave befre the end f exam perid. This class has ften had its final n the last pssible day.
