4 Introduction This section introduces the SPECTRUM Device Management documentation for ESX Series Devices. This introduction to the Device Management for ESX devices in contains the following information: Purpose and Scope Required Reading Supported Devices (Page 5) The SPECTRUM Model (Page 6) Purpose and Scope Use this documentation as a guide for managing ESX devices with the SPECTRUM management module SM-CSI1039. The documentation describes the icons, menus, and views that enable you to remotely monitor, configure, and troubleshoot, ESX Devices through software models in your SPECTRUM database. Only information specific to the supported management module is included under this topic. For general information about device management using SPECTRUM and for explanations of basic SPECTRUM functionality and navigation techniques, refer to the documentation listed under Required Reading. Required Reading To use this documentation effectively, you must be familiar with the information covered by the other SPECTRUM online documentation topics listed below. 5 Introduction Supported Devices This management module manages Cabletron s ESXMIM Ethernet Switching Media Interface Module, ESXMIM-F2 Fiber-Optic Ethernet Switching Media Interface Module, and ESX-1320 and Ethernet Workgroup Switches. The ESXMIM is a multi-function hub module that provides integrated bridging and fast packet switching capabilities to the MMAC hub. It provides five RJ45 10Base-T ports, another slot for an Ethernet Port Interface Module (EPIM), plus one slot for a Bridge/Router Interface Module (BRIM), providing a total of seven ports for media flexibility, The ESXMIM provides maximum throughput across all six Ethernet ports, offering full bandwidth connections to servers, high-end workstations, and inter-hub links. The device uses dural processors to deliver comprehensive SNMP management without sacrificing network throughput or bridging performance. The primary Intel-1960 continually directs network traffic to the appropriate destination interface, while the other processes SNMP communications and statistics gathering. The BRIM provides an ATM, FDDI, WAN, Ethernet, or Token Ring port, while the EPIM offers media flexibility by allowing you to select Ethernet interface types. The device supports Supported Devices IEEE d and DEC Spanning TGree algorithms, and other bridging functions include traffic filtering by destination, source, type field, and 64-byte offset. The ESXMIM-F2 provides the same functionality as the ESXMIM but supports five dual ST fiberoptic ports, one BRIM interface, and one EPIM interface, using dual i960 RISC processors. The ESX-1320/1380s are standalone devices that provide ESXMIM capabilities to workgroups and remote offices. The ESX-1320 provides twelve switched 10Base-T full-duplexed ports plus one BRIM slot. The ESX-1380 is identical except that it provides twelve switched 10Base-FL fullduplexed fiber ports plus one BRIM slot. The BRIMs and EPIMs are optional. They transfer packets between different channels. Unlike EPIMs, however, BRIMs bridge these packets from one transmission type to another (e.g., Ethernet to FDDI network backbones). The BRIM occupies the G channel (ESXMIM) and the M channel (ESX-1320). Possible BRIMs are as follows: BRIM-F6: FDDI Dual Attached Station (DAS) connection BRIM-E6: Ethernet module with selectable media connections BRIM-T6: Token Ring connection SPECTRUM Enterprise Manager 5 ESX Series

6 Introduction BRIM-A6: Asynchronous Transfer Mode connection The SPECTRUM Model This section describes the model types used in SPECTRUM to manage the devices, and it explains how to access the SPECTRUM views that provide the management information. When modeling an ESX device, you should enter one of the following selections, as applicable, in the Select Model Type dialog box: BRtrCSIESXM for the ESXMIM and ESXMIM- F2 BRtrCSIESXW for the ESX-1320 and ESX For modeling instructions, refer to the SPECTRUM administrator s The following model type names, appearing in the lower rectangular field of device icons and in the Model Type fields of the Model Information view and other views, refer to the models used to specify attributes, actions, and associations for the specified devices in SPECTRUM: ESXMIM is used for ESXMIM and ESXMIM- F2 modules. The SPECTRUM Model ESXW is used for ESX-1320 and ESX-1380 modules. As shows, Figure 1 the appearance of the Device icon varies slightly depending on the kind of view it appears in. Figure 1: BRtrCSIESXM ESXMIM LargeDeviceicon appears in Device Topology, Location, and Interface Device views. Small and Large Device Icons Small Device icon appears in Topology, Device Topology, Application Views Figure shows a portion of a Topology view in which the Device icon representing the BRtrCSIESXM models appears surrounded by icons representing the network entities which the device connects--in this case two Ethernet LANs and an Off-Page Reference icon representing a Wide Area Link to a corporate network. Link Error Rate Estimate The link error rate estimate is a cumulative longterm average of the bit error rate, which represents the quality of the physical link. The link error rate estimate is computed when the port is connected and then recalculated every 10 seconds thereafter. It ranges from 10-4 to and is reported as a whole integer, representing the exponent. If the port s link error rate estimate were computed to be 10-5, for example, the value reported in this field would be 5, representing an actual rate of 1,250 bit errors per second. A lower SPECTRUM Enterprise Manager 23 ESX Series

24 link error rate estimate indicates a higher bit error rate, as shown in Figure 9. Figure 9: Bit Errors per Second Link Error Rate Estimate Reported Link Error Rate Estimate (n) Link Error Rate Cutoff The link error rate threshold at which a link connection is flagged as faulty and the port is disabled by SMT. The default link error rate cutoff threshold is 7, representing 12.5 bit errors per second (see Figure 9). This value can be changed. Link Error Rate Alarm The link error rate threshold which, if exceeded, generates an alarm for the port. The default link error rate alarm threshold is 8, which represents 1.25 bit errors per second (Figure 9). This value can be changed. Link Error Monitor Reject Count The link error monitor count of the times the link has been rejected. Link Error Monitor Count The aggregate link error monitor count. This count is set to zero upon station power up and increments each time the port s link error monitor detects an error. An increasing link error monitor count usually indicates a problem either with the connectors or with the cable between this port and the node. SPECTRUM Enterprise Manager 24 ESX Series
